Free instore performance! (http://www.facebook.com/events/1503136373259809/) This coming Sunday, October 26th, we welcome back to our stage LILY & MADELEINE for an all-ages show to celebrate the release of their brand new CD/LP, Fumes, out on Asthmatic Kitty at this record release performance! Joining Lil & Mad on stage will be the talented Ms Shannon Hayden. Bring the whole family. We will also have beautiful screened posters from Goodnight Sweet Prints for sale! ** New Arrivals for October 21st ------------------------------------------------------------ ** Budos Band - Burnt Offering (Daptone) ------------------------------------------------------------ The Budos return with Burnt Offering; a wild, booze-fueled ride of hazy riffs and take no prisoners horn lines that summons the occult - an evolved sound for this mighty 10-piece band sparked by their love of Black Sabbath and Pentagram. Burnt Offering was recorded live in the studio, engineered and produced by guitarist Tom Brenneck. Alternate art version available while they last! ** Thurston Moore - The Best Day (Matador) ------------------------------------------------------------ The Best Day, Thurston Moore's first solo record since 2010's Demolished Thoughts, radiates with both his signature dynamism of dense thrashing electric guitars as well as blissful 12-string acoustic ballads. Recorded with Thurston's current band line-up of James Sedwards (guitars, UK), Deb Googe (of My Bloody Valentine, bass, UK) and Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth, drums, USA), there are also a some tracks that feature all instrumentation by Thurston. ** Sleater-Kinney - Start Together [box] (Sub Pop) ------------------------------------------------------------ Sleater-Kinney is an acclaimed rock band that formed in Olympia, WA in 1994. They were known for their feminist, left-leaning politics, and were an integral part of the riot grrrl and indie rock scenes in the Pacific Northwest. Start Together is a deluxe box set compiling all 7 of their critically-acclaimed albums, plus a 44-page hardcover book and an art print (and maybe a surprise, too). Each LP is on a different color, and this box is the only way to get these albums on colored vinyl. Each album has been freshly remastered by Greg Calbi for this release. Individual CDs and LPs also available. ** Scott Walker + Sunn O))) - Soused (4AD) ------------------------------------------------------------ When Sunn O))) first approached Scott Walker about appearing on their 2009 album Monoliths & Dimensions, they didn't know what it would actually lead to. Four years on, Scott returned with something even more enticing, collaborating on Soused, a body of work he was writing with them in mind. Recorded in London in early 2014 and produced by Scott Walker and long-time ally Peter Walsh with the assistance of musical director Mark Warman, Soused is a 5-track, 50-minute record that cements the status of both acts' wide-reaching and otherworldly renown. ** Cold War Kids - Hold My Home (Downtown) ------------------------------------------------------------ Cold War Kids have announced details of their fifth studio album, Hold My Home. It serves as the follow-up to 2013's Dear Miss Lonelyhearts. The 11-track album was produced by guitarist Dan Gallucci and frequent collaborator Lars Stalfors (Mars Volta, Matt and Kim) at the band's personal studio in San Jose, California. The album is grand and regaling, a sonically uplifting mix of jittery guitars, handclap rhythms, and dynamic vocal harmonies. ** Full Sun - Itch (Lets Pretend) ------------------------------------------------------------ On vinyl and cassette, it's the 12-song debut long-player from Full Sun, driven by drummer turned songwriter Jeff Grant. On 'Itch', Grant renews some of the straightforward power-pop of his other band, The Sands, and the punk spirit of his first songwriting venture Pink Razors. "Think sunny, Future Virgins, power pop-inflected pop punk, Exploding Hearts vocals, and some Superchunk thrown in." - Razorcake ** Nude Beach - 77 (Don Giovanni) ------------------------------------------------------------ Nude Beach occupy a unique rock plane of existence that finds harmony between radio giants like Tom Petty and reclusive underground kooks like Bill Fox. As a trio of musicians, they are loose without lapsing into sloppiness, earnest sans cheese, knowledgeable minus pretension. Over the course of a set as the band whips from one song to the next, they will echo the tones and moods of Springsteen, The Only Ones, The Flamin' Groovies, The Replacements, and Badfinger, as well as anyone who released a record on Sire between 77 and 81. Call their brand of rock whatever you like, but it's never short of eloquent, ingeniously performed and classically constructed. ** Primus - And The Chocolate Factory With The Fungi Ensemble (ATO) ------------------------------------------------------------ The definitive Primus line-up of Les Claypool, guitarist Larry LaLonde, and drummer Tim Alexander is back together in 20 years. "The idea was to combine the Frog Brigade and Primus, and do this record, says Claypool. I think like a good portion of the planet, we were all pretty put off by the remake of the 'Willy Wonka' movie - the Tim Burton version. I really wanted to pay homage to the film [1971's Willy Wonka, starring Gene Wilder]." ** The Pop Group - We Are Time (Freaks R Us) ------------------------------------------------------------ Some artists churn out records for decades and leave behind little of significance. Others record little and leave a substantial legacy. The Pop Group belongs in that second category, releasing 2 albums and the odds-and-ends collection We Are Time during a 3-year life span. While it has become de rigueur to call an obscure band "seminal," the Pop Group was among a handful of acts that harnessed the energy of punk, truly recognized the possibilities it opened up, and took music in exciting directions. The band used punk's back-to-basics ethos as a springboard for experimentation with funk, dub, and jazz, blending dance rhythms and rock in ways that continue to inspire. They also politicized rock with an intensity and urgency that put rebel poseurs like the Clash to shame. ** VA - Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell (Yep Roc) ------------------------------------------------------------ The record features 26 tracks by more than 20 artists, including Robyn, Hot Chip, Cults, Sufjan Stevens, Devendra Banhart, Thao, Phosphorescent, Glen Hansard, Blood Orange, Liam Finn, The Autumn Defense, Jose Gonzalez, and Lonnie Holley, paying homage to Russell's boundless creativity and wide-ranging work, which swerved from electronic dance to folk to classical and resulted in what NPR hails as "catchy and hypnotic records that were far ahead of their time." ** Tape & Vinyl & Print Zone ------------------------------------------------------------ Black Planet - Betty No 7" (Lets Pretend) Bill Callahan - I Drive a Valence [book] (Drag City) Cave - Release LP (Drag City) Drilling for Blasting - How to Play Guitar 7" (Lets Pretend) The George-Edwards Group - Chapter III LP (Galactic Zoo) Jeff the Brotherhood - Dig the Classics LP (WB) King Wolf - Rockin Time [tape] (Lets Pretend) Lumpy and the Dumpers - Sex Pit 7" (Muckraker) Mineral - [reissues] (Arena Rock) Nightmares on Wax - [LP reissues] (Warp) Of Montreal - LP reissues (Bar None) Pedro Says Hi - The Creep-Over [tape] (Lets Pretend) Pretty Pretty - Leather Weather 7" (Lets Pretend) Sleater-Kinney - [LP reissues] (Sub Pop) Wringer - Bullfighter [tape] (Lets Pretend) The Yolks - Kings of Awesome [tape] (Burger) ** Also Released This Week ------------------------------------------------------------ Elisa Ambrogio [Magik Markers] - The Immoralist (Drag City) Bear's Den - Islands (Communion) Bush - Man on the Run (BMG) Dope Body - Lifer (Drag City) Robert Lester Folsom - Music and Dreams (Anthology) Horse Feathers - So It Is With Us (Kill Rock Stars) Billy Idol - Kings & Queens of the Underground (Kobalt) Jukebox the Ghost - s/t (Yep Roc) Slats Klug & Friends - Summer Sky (self) Mark Lanegan Band - Phantom Radio (Vagrant) Dennis Riggins - Songs for Katie (self) Swearing At Motorists - While Laughing, The Joker Tells The Truth (A) The 2 Bears - The Night is Young (Southern Fried) Jessie Ware - Tough Love (Interscope) Young Statues - The Flatlands Are Your Friends (Run for Cover) VA - Next Stop Soweto - Spirit Of Malombo (Strut) ** Upcoming Concerts ------------------------------------------------------------ Hey out-of-towners and home-bodies!
