The groundhog said 6 more weeks of winter but it looks like he just wanted people to hide inside while he took a tropical vacation to Bloomington to work on his tan a little bit. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 2/5/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Jason Collett - Here's to Being Here (Arts & Crafts) ................................................................... Recorded and produced in Collett's hometown of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the album also features guest performances by fellow Broken Social Scene member and Apostle of Hustle front man Andrew Whiteman. This is very much an old school guitar record, says Collett. Dead Meadow - Old Growth (Matador) ................................................................... Darlings of both the stoner rock and modern psychedelia worlds, they transcend both. Over the last ten years, they've reacted to the country's swelling conservatism with a particularly escapist, surreal, lovely, and deafening sound of their own, and an exponentially growing audience tuning in. Recorded at both a haunted rural Indiana farmhouse, and at LA's Sunset Sound (in the studio where many of the tracks for Led Zeppelin IV were laid down), Jason Simon continues his reign as a modern-day Jimi, while the rhythm section recalls the creativity and tension of Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. Devastations - Yes, U (Beggars) ................................................................... The Australians who made Karen O cry, that's good enough for us. Think of em as kind of an Oz take on The National, perhaps? This is an album of truly kaleidoscopic proportions. Yes, U doles out 2 spoonfuls of sugar for every dose of medicine. This is music to go out to. It might inspire you to do bad things. But you will be held responsible on the morning after. Bill Dixon with Exploding Star Orchestra - s/t (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... Rob Mazurek is a prime figure in the vibrant Chicago sound scene, having performed in Chicago Underground, Isotope 217, and Tigersmilk. This is the group's 2nd CD and the first to feature free jazz legend Bill Dixon, whose career has spanned over 40 years. He's played with the likes of Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, and William Parker. Also featured are John Herndon and Jeff Parker (Tortoise), Nicole Mitchell (Frequency), Matthew Lux (Isotope 217), Damon Locks (The Eternals), and many of Chicago's most exciting improvisers. Girl Talk / Trey Told 'em - Super Epic Mega Anniversary Mix (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... Thrill Jockey opened the vaults to Gregg Gillis (Girl Talk) and Frank Musarra (Hearts of Darknesses), aka Trey Told 'Em and let them go to town. And they exceeded all expectations! Managing to fit every single Oval song into one track and also crafting a special Tortoise and Trans Am mega mix. And last but certainly not least, the has to be heard, super epic mix that manages to include almost every Thrill Jockey artist. 70 minutes of music, extremely limited! Hot Chip - Made in the Dark (Astralwerks) ................................................................... Hot Chip's 3rd album and the follow up to their critically acclaimed album The Warning. This new installment shows Hot Chip at its best - wonderfully quirky, clever, soulful and poppy. The sound of the band has evolved towards a wilder, heavier electronics, though still coupled with a signature pop aesthetic. It also shows that the band is equally at home creating songs of intimacy and melancholy as they were dancefloor fillers. LP delayed until 2/26, sorry. Lightspeed Champion - Falling Off the Lavender Bridge (Domino) ................................................................... Lightspeed Champion is the alter ego of Dev Hynes, musical polymath and former member of cult noise pop band Test Icicles. After their demise in 2006, Hynes began to focus on the more melodic fare that's closer to his heart. On this record, he worked with Mike Mogis and was backed by an informal band including multi-instrumentalists Mogis and Nate Walcott, The Faint's drummer Clark Baechle, and guest vocalist Emmy The Great, along with moonlighting members of Cursive and Tilly And The Wall. Here, Hynes reveals much about himself; the album being packed with tragic-comic autobiographical numbers. Bob Mould - District Line (Anti) ................................................................... Mould was an 80s punk pioneer with Husker Du and indie rock god with Sugar. Bob wrote, produced and mixed District Line in his adopted hometown of Washington, DC, offering what he describes as "stories of my simple life in a complicated town." Working with Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty, Mould has returned to the live band sound of Husker Du and Sugar to kick out ten songs that sound as youthful, energized and immediate as anything he has ever recorded. Say Hi (to Your Mom) - The Wishes and the Glitch (Rebel Group) ................................................................... Something very different is happening on the new CD from Say Hi. Yes, the dry sense of humor is never far, but gone are the persistent musings about robots and vampires, replaced here instead by a complicated mapping of the post-20 something psyche, by the slow implosion of someone who fell out of love with everything he once held dear and who attempts to muster just enough gumption to get back and begin something fresh. It offers up something more wholesome, a glimpse into the songwriter's disappointments and excitement at new prospects. School of Language - Sea From Shore (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... Since Field Music's final tour last March, David Brewis has been busily piecing together this first School of Language record. Primarily recorded by alone and consciously susceptible to the cut-and-paste, multi-tasking tangents induced by laptop recording, these constructions are resolutely un-band-like, veering between the intricate and unplayable and the solitary and unadorned, their cohesion stemming from an embrace of all that is most obtuse and personal. Sons & Daughters - This Gift (Domino) ................................................................... This Scottish quartet have fashioned a distinct sound inspired by the melancholy storytelling of Lee Hazlewood, the lyricism of Leonard Cohen, and the raw power of country, blues, and folk filtered through their punk adolescence. This Gift develops this sound into a whirlwind of tarnished 60s glamour, referencing celebrity culture, cult films, and literary classics. Kelley Stoltz - Circular Sounds (Sub Pop) ................................................................... The 4th album from Stoltz has a stereophonic advance on the lo-fi psych-fuzz and mid-fi piano-rock of his previous 2 LPs on Sub Pop. Circular Sounds is very much a pop record in the classic 60s mold. Radio-ready yet retaining the organic warmth that gave his earlier work its character.
