If you missed our Grizzly Bear release party yesterday, fear not! We still have some posters left, as well as buttons. But the red velvet bear claw cake is gone, sorry! And of course we have plenty of CD and LP copies of Veckatimest ready for ya, come and git it! By popular demand we are extending our contest to win VIP tickets to the show at the Buskirk Chumley Theater on June 9th to all sales of the album TODAY as well. If you've preordered the new Sonic Youth, make sure you've logged into the BEGN website! They are about to turn off the presale and are basing orders on those numbers. You have until tomorrow! ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 5/26/2009 ................................................................... Black Moth Super Rainbow - Eating Us (Graveface) ................................................................... Special furry version! After a year of eerie, stilted silence, the sun shines and the shadows reappear. Black Moth Super Rainbow has crept from the forests and cities to make Eating Us, their dark bubblegum freakout. The first fully hi-fi BMSR record adds space and dimension to the band's sticky, off-kilter melodies. This isn't an album about witches and woods, and this time around the band isn't letting on to what it all might mean. Because to them, it's just better that way. Blank Dogs - Under and Under (In the Red) ................................................................... For the past several years, a slew of 12-inches, 7-inches, and cassettes have been released by the mysterious Brooklyn artist known as Blank Dogs. Blank Dogs is actually singular - it's the insanely prolific one-man band of Mr. Blank Dog. Not too much is known about the guy behind the bedroom new wave / pop / punk act and he's usually covering his face with masks or bedspreads, but that's fine. The sound is Joy Division vocal lines with The Cure's synth and guitar melodies filtered through ancient, submerged keyboards and eroded recording equipment. And that voice? All the feedback in the world can't hide his knack for melody. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest (Warp) ................................................................... Veckatimest - named for a Massachusetts island the band visited during recording - is a stunning collection of 12 songs of homespun elegance, bubbling with orchestral flourishes, haunted harmony vocals by all four band members, and a graceful, unrestrained beauty. Splitting their time between recordings in Cape Cod and a church hall in their native Brooklyn, Grizzly Bear's attention to details in the studio is felt on every track. Veckatimest is ultimately confident and delicate, sophisticated and alive, a line no one walks with quite as much panache as Grizzly Bear. Group Doueh - Treeg Salaam LP (Sublime Frequencies) ................................................................... Treeg Salaam (Streets of Peace), blows hot and dusty from the infernal sand swept dunes of the Western Sahara. Compiled from the band's personal archives, these 5 tracks are as brain shifting in their ecstatic brilliance as any music ever heard. From the Wah-stroked lead off track to the blazing dexterity of Ragsa Jaguar, the whole of the A side is an entrance to the lip-puckering tea den of Saharan trance heaven. Salmou Baamar's guitar/tinidit runs explode in cosmic shrapnel, raining down on the temporal nodes of the listener's brain. On side 2 we have a 20 minute, smoky, slow burning, psychedelic excursion into the great unknown. A meditation on the arid and inhospitable landscape that inspires this music and its people. This is a one-time pressing on 180 gram vinyl and comes in a gatefold full color jacket with great photos of the musicians. Intelligence - Fake Surfers (In the Red) ................................................................... Fake Surfers, the fourth album by Seattle's prolific and sacred Intelligence, is destined to change your whole outlook on "pop" music. As with 2007's Deuteronomy, The Intelligence has employed In The Red house producer Mike McHugh at the Distillery to hone their edge to its sharpest yet. The Intelligence has faint whiffs of Swell Maps, Tronics, and Wire's Chairs Missing, though Fake Surfers is more relaxed and evenly paced than any previous releases. Modest Mouse - Satellite Skin 7" (Sony) ................................................................... Modest Mouse have released the first single from their forthcoming B-sides EP, titled No One's First and You're Next (due in August). It will feature unreleased tracks and B-sides from the band's previous 2 studio albums. Four sets of 7" vinyl singles are set to precede the EP's release. Featuring "Satellite Skin" and "Guilty Cocker Spaniels", the first single was planned for Record Store Day but missed that mark. Now its out! Colored vinyl, embossed sleeve, limited edition, numbered. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (Glassnote) ................................................................... New album from the French Electro-Rockers. Born out of restlessness and a steady hunt for inspiration, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is a career-defining album filled with the band's signature melding of synthetics and organics, sharp, danceable rhythms, infectious choruses with a considerable dose of aural panache and candy-colored pop sensibilities. Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens - What Have You Done (Daptone) ................................................................... Like many R&B singers, Naomi Shelton learned to sing at an early age in the church where she was baptized in Alabama. She began her professional career as the house singer at a little club called the Night Cap in Brooklyn, NY. There she met the man who would become her producer, mentor, and friend for life. Cliff Driver and his band were just off the road backing Baby Washington as part of the James Brown Revue. "I liked her cause she had a different type voice - a raspy sound like Mavis Staples." A testament to the singular sound of gospel and soul music. Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions (Southern Lord) ................................................................... The album showcases the core guitar duo - Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson - incorporating influences from a plethora of guest musicians, bringing the SUNN O))) sound to epic new levels. The band collaborated with composer Eyvind Kang on various acoustic ensembles, in addition to the Helios fueled electric guitars and basses. Key players include Australian guitar genius Oren Ambarchi, Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar and slow music godfather Dylan Carlson (Earth), as well as Julian Priester and new-music horn player Stuart Dempster. There's also an upright bass trio, French & English horns, harp & flute duo, piano, brass, reed & strings ensembles, and a Viennese woman's choir led by Persian vocal savant Jessika Kenney. Tyvek - s/t (Siltbreeze) ................................................................... Following a gaggle of 7-inches for labels such as X!, What's Your Rupture?, S-S, and M'Lady's Records, Tyvek delivers a long-player. Combining an uncanny channeling of The Urinals and early Mekons, Tyvek drops jaws to floors with solid acorns of repetitive punk/pop numbers that became oaks almost instantaneously. The inclusion of Damon brings in another sonic dimension and suddenly the band's set veers into a Velvet Underground by-way-of The Feelies stratosphere. Here you'll find a mixture of both, the blend of 2 perfect worlds. The Vinyl Zone (get into the groove!) ...................................................................
