NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 1/26/2009 .................................................. Beach House - Teen Dream (Sub Pop) .................................................. Recorded in upstate NY in a converted church called Dreamland with producer Chris Coady (who has worked with TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Blonde Redhead) Teen Dream is the third album from the Baltimore-based duo Beach House, and their Sub Pop debut. The new album gives voice to a full universe of unbridled imagination, and the manifestation of Teen Dream has been a welcomed and all-consuming obsession for Beach House the past 9-12 months. Teen Dream will be packaged with a companion DVD featuring a video for each song on the album, each by a different director. Pitchfork Best New Music! Basia Bulat - Heart of my Own (Rough Trade) .................................................. Recorded with Howard Bilerman at the mighty Hotel2Tango studio in Montreal, nearly all the songs were written while on the road: traveling between cities, crossing the Canadian prairies, searching for a place to stop in the Nevada desert, trailing through the Smoky Mountains, standing in the bright dusk of a summer night in the Yukon. Perhaps most surprising was the strong influence her short time in the Yukon had on this album. Basia spent 5 days and nights in Dawson City, where for the first time she experienced true silence. Citay - Dream Get Together (Dead Oceans) .................................................. The San Francisco cosmic wanderers' expansive third full-length album. Many of the touchstones from Citay's previous work remain intact - flourishes of Led Zeppelin, Eno/Fripp, Thin Lizzy, Pink Floyd, Popul Vuh and ELO can be heard throughout but a newfound swagger pushes Dream Get Together way over the top. This is the shot across the bow. See en live March 27th at the Bishop! Four Tet - There Is Love in You (Domino) .................................................. Electronic artist Four Tet (aka Kieran Hebden) finally releases a follow up to 2005's Everything Ecstatic after a few years of EPs and remix albums in between. His fifth album overall. First single "Love Cry" was released ahead of the album to enthusiastic reviews. Pitchfork Best New Music! Fukced Up - Couple Tracks: 2002-09 (Matador) .................................................. A 2 CD/2 LP compilation of 25 songs from their many, many hard-to-find, uncollected 7"s and 12"s. Couple Tracks spans an extraordinarily varied (and extraordinarily collectible) musical career that has mainly been documented on singles released around the world on many labels in many countries. Also includes 5 totally unreleased tracks. Free bonus 7inch with purchase while supplies last! Catch em with Kurt Vile on Valentine's Day at the Bluebird! Charlotte Gainsbourg - IRM (Because) .................................................. The title is derived from the medical procedure Charlotte had to go through after suffering a head injury in a water skiing accident in 2007. The album is her most personal to date, and is produced by Beck. What started as a brief recording session between Charlotte and Beck ended up to be the body of work that is IRM. Over the course of a year and a half of writing and recording together, Beck's role grew to encompass all aspects of the creative process. He worked seamlessly with Charlotte co-writing the lyrics and produced and mixed the recording. Los Campesinos - Romance is Boring (Arts & Crafts) .................................................. Last year's mini-album We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed debuted a firmer, harder sound, the giddy sugar rush of "You! Me! Dancing!" metabolized into nervous adrenaline and lyrics spiked with jealousy, angst and paranoia. But Romance Is Boring feels like a band that's - well, not so much grown up - let's say "fully realized." It's a record that's bigger, deeper, more complex and more direct than anything Los Campesinos! has recorded to date. Packed with guest spots from the likes of Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu, Zac Pennington of Parenthetical Girls and Jherek Bischoff of the Dead Science, it is nothing if not ambitious. Magnetic Fields - Realism (Nonesuch) .................................................. Magnetic Fields' 3rd Nonesuch disc is the flipside to the industrial pop of Distortion, the quartet's brilliant homage to the clangorous sound of the Jesus & Mary Chain. While Distortion was recorded quickly and noisily in the stairwells and rooms of the NYC apt building to which Stephen Merritt was about to bid adieu for California, Realism was cut in the distortion-free environs of a LA studio, and its sound is as pristine as a plein-air painting. There are no drum kits to be heard, and the fascinatingly varied instrumentation - accordions, violins, cellos, tablas, banjos, tuba, even a smattering of mellifluous falling leaves - did not need to be plugged in. At the Buskirk on Friday, March 5th! Scout Niblett - Calcination of Scout Niblett (Drag City) .................................................. Continuing her fruitful studio relationship with Steve Albini, Scout's new album is her most tightly coiled yet, a heavy handful of songs that are reaching for the ripe and the light. People come to Emma Louise Scout Niblett for the joy of a scalding hot bath of sound amidst stark, bluesy emoting and she won't let 'em down this time. The Calcination of Scout Niblett is an intense devotional, a determined spirit journey and a collection of great slow-dance songs. Retribution Gospel Choir - 2 (Sub Pop) .................................................. Retribution Gospel Choir is a rock trio that features Alan Sparhawk on guitar and vocals, Steve Garrington on bass and Eric Pollard on drums and vocals. Alan also fronts the band Low with his wife, Mimi Parker, and Steve also plays bass in Low. 2 is Retribution Gospel Choir's 2nd full-length and Sub Pop debut! The first two people to buy the CD (or support group Ha Ha Tonka) from Landlocked also get a free ticket to their show at the Bishop on February 17th! Woo. Strong Arm Steady - In Search of Stoney Jackson (Stones Throw) .................................................. A collaboration with producer Madlib. Prompted by Madlib's stalwart DJ, J. Rocc, who supplied SAS' Krondon and Phil Da Agony wiht 14 new Madlib beats, this album's conception and delivery bear resemblances to the trajectory took by 2003's Jaylib (with J. Dilla) and Madvillain (with Doom). Recommended! VA - Casual Victim Pile: Austin 2010 (Matador) .................................................. Casual Victim Pile = an anagram of "Live Music Capital". You can safely assume that with all due respect to the City of Austin's attempts to promote itself as such. Includes tracks from 19 of the best up and coming bands from the Austin region. Includes Harlem, Woven Bones and many more soon to be legendary bands! VA - Minimal Waves Tapes Vol 1 (Stones Throw) .................................................. Stone Throw Founder Peanut Butter Wolf has always had a love affair with that 80's new wave, Post punk and DYI Sound. Here he scours the Archives of New York's own Minimal Wave, a small indie label dedicated to reissuing lost and rare gems from around the World.
