You don't have to take our Elevator to the 13th Floor to realise its Easter Everywhere... all the bulbs we planted so diligently this past autumn are now sprouting and about to bloom, kinda like Landlocked Music - we're bloomin' fools! Floodwaters nor hailstorms can keep us from delivering you the latest delicious morsels of sonic goodness. But don't just take the word of I, your humble narrator - read on yourself! ------------------------------------------------------------------ Select New Releases for 04/18/06: Fiery Furnaces - Bitter Tea CD (Fat Possum) ................................................................... Bitter Tea is the latest installment from the Brooklyn based Fiery Furnaces. The multi-instrumental brother and sister duo continue with their eclectic backdrop of experimental yet undeniably catchy melodies that set the stage perfectly for Eleanor's distinct vocals. Jason wonders why no one has yet to compare them to the Residents. Drive-By Truckers - A Blessing and a Curse CD (New West) ................................................................................ .......... DBT released several albums of gutsy, often ironic roots rock before settling down to compose their unlikely magnum opus, The Southern Rock Opera, a two-act, two-CD work based loosely on the history of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Without polishing away their personality, producer David Barbe and mixer John Agnello get the band's three-guitar onslaught on tape with equal shares of muscle and clarity, while the tight interplay between the players suggests the Rolling Stones at their Sticky Fingers/Exile on Main St. peak as much as the DBT's oft-cited role models Lynyrd Skynyrd. (AMG) Be Your Own Pet - Summer Sensation CD EP (Ecstatic Peace) ................................................................................ ............ New darlings from Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label. BYOP are from Nashville, TN and are young and bratty and ready to take on the world. Female fronted hyperactive short attention span rawk thats RIYL the YYYs, Stooges, Gossip, and Mr Fister's wife? (LL) the Church - Uninvited, Like The Clouds CD (Cooking Vinyl) ................................................................................ ............ Its been 25+ years since the Church released their first record, Of Skins and Heart. Its been 18 years since the Church released their world famous and exquisite "Under the Milky Way". And they're still churning out album after album of quality music even after all these years. Steve Kilbey and Marty Willson-Piper still have it on this, their, what, 19th album? (LL) the Black Angels - Passover CD (Light in the Attic) ............................................................................. Heavy drone-dirge rock outta Texas, so like Spacemen 3 meets ZZ Top: chooglin' minus the good times. A bit of a Velvets thing going on too, and if you liked the Black Mountain LP you are sure to dig this. There's a thread of anti-war sentiment running through the whole thing, as well as some Altamont-like, post-Free Love dread and disillusionment happening. If Apocalypse Now were made about the Iraq War, the Black Angels would take the place of the Doors on the soundtrack. Bad vibes. Good tunes. LP version coming soon.
