Its still raining. Sure, its greener, the squirrels are squirrelin and the tulips sure do look purdy, but enough with the rain already! Its nice to fall asleep to some thunder but we gotta walk in the stuff! Cuz we surely can't afford to fill our Humvee Limo with petrol prices as they are... what- you didn't see us driving down College/Walnut during Little5 Weekend with our flourescent spinners and hot tub etc etc? You missed out. So do yourself a favor and don't miss out on these hot new titles!!! (We only wish we had time away from our cruisin' to have written these mini-reviews, so don't blame us if they're lame.) ------------------------------------------------------------------ Select New Releases for 04/18/06: The Streets - The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living CD/LP (Vice) ................................................................... Genre challenging musical genius Mike Skinner returns with his brilliant 3rd studio album, The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living. This autobiographical masterpiece retells Mike's life from street kid to celebrity in the UK. Drugs, sex, loss, love, scandal, and violence echo throughout this magnum opus from the lead single "When You Wasn't Famous" until the end. (INS) Tom Verlaine - Around CD (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... Verlaine has truly shaped the sound of modern music, from his early days with the Neon Boys and Television, throughout his solo career, and most recently, as the guitarist in Patti Smith's band. Always ahead of the curve, Tom's influence is immeasurable throughout the rock world with bands as diverse as The Strokes and Dos. No one, however, has been able to replicate his sounds, from delicate lace-like details to soaring and singling lines. Around and Songs And Other Things are his first new releases since Warm And Cool in 1992. Around is largely an improvised record and features Tom's old Neon Boys bandmate Billy Ficca on drums. Tom Verlaine - Songs and Other Things CD (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... Songs is his first vocal album in sixteen years and it includes instrumentation from Television bassist Fred Smith. This record finds Verlaine's songwriting at its most colorful. With so many years between this and his last vocal record, he's got a lot of storytelling to catch up on, which makes every track here a gem. Elf Power - Back To The Web CD (Ryko) ................................................................... Elf Power return with their Rykodisc debut, Back to the Web, a haunting, twisting journey weaving its way through heavy psychedelic haze, to soulful, melodic folk, to stomping T Rex-styled rock. Back to the Web is full of the band's signature, lovely pop melodies, but a distinct progression is evident in the songwriting and the lush, full production. The folkier tunes are laced with strings and the heavier ones scream psychedelia; influences of Bob Dylan and Wall-era Pink Floyd can be detected. (INS) Eleventh Dream Day - Zereos and Ones CD (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... Twenty years into the partnership, this band retains its youthful enthusiasm. The music has evolved greatly, but the spark and the drive remain the same on this, the first new record in six years. Zeroes And Ones is about the difference between gravity and floating away, reality or dream, looking for something to grasp or simply letting go. They've crafted the finest album of their long career. The guitar playing and song writing is elevated, the raw energy honed and undiluted by the passage of time. The band includes Janet Bean (Freakwater), Doug McCombs (Tortoise, Brokeback, Pullman), and Mark Greenberg (Coctails, Archer Prewitt). (INS) Starlight Mints - Drowaton CD (Barsuk) ................................................................... Their love of archetypal pop and AM radio has provided, over the course of two acclaimed albums, a rock-solid foundation for a whole bunch of inspired unusualness, all baked to perfection under the hot Oklahoman sun. Their unique brand of instrumentally complex, surrealistically worded pop contains a blend of classic string arrangements, cheeky boyish vocals, catchy melody, and ornate surrealism. You might call it bubblegum psych. Church bells, horns, piano, violin, tambourine, triangle, synths, and sound effects complement the usual suspects of guitar, bass, and drums to paint a broad sonic palate.
