Did you call your momma? If you stopped in our store this past sunday you probably saw our subtle reminder to call home for mother's day. Hopefully you bought her (from Landlocked, of course) the new Neil Young or Paul Simon CD that just came out - mom's like that stuff. And even though she told you to turn off that crud you listened to years ago, I am sure her (and your) tastes have changed by now and are nearly synced together, right? Why, I am sure that the two of you would appreciate just about any of these new releases for this week! ------------------------------------------------------------------ Boris - Pink (Southern Lord) ................................................................... Pink has it all: Ultra-heavy drone, dark psychelia, 70's fuzzed out acid rock, balls out punk rawk, all fused with a dose of ultra-catchy melodicism. This Southern Lord version also contains expanded audio content not found on the Japanese issue. As with all previous Boris releases on Southern Lord, the packaging is uniquely psychedelic with the utmost attention to detail created by Stephen O'Malley, including 3 perforated acid-tab cards! (SL) Espers - Espers II (Drag City) ................................................................... Espers started just a few short years ago as a trio from Philadelphia featuring singer/songwriter Greg Weeks, Meg Baird and Brooke Sietinsons. Their infectious sound quickly brought them increased attention and stints performing with legends like Brigitte St. John, The Incredible String Band and Michael Hurley. This is purple pop music, dark like the sky through the trees in the forest at night, no matter how the pieces are rearranged. (ESP) Faun Fables - The Transit Rider CD (Drag City) ................................................................... Oakland's Faun Fables aren't really a folk group, but there's no adequate name for the music Dawn and Nils make together, music that is so total, otherworldy, and heretical a vision of traditional music that it can only be compared to The Residents' version of rock 'n roll. Frykdahl's instrumental virtuosity is strictly in the service of making every sound you've ever heard unfamiliar. This band has the uncanny ability to blow through original songs, ancient ballads and European avant garde numbers in a set without a single note seeming out of place. (LAW) Qwertyt - Secession 01 CD (701 West) ................................................................... Sole (and posthumous) album from Bloomington's notorious dada-inspired, folk cum improv combo. Qwertyt's members -- Tristra Newyear (Kuntwerk, cyrillic glossolalia), Matt Griffin (olo, percussion), Ian Yeager (0/X and the Bitchhogs, handmade intrigue), Hakan Toker (Salaam, dancing strawberry) and Eric Weddle (John Wilkes Booze, electronics) -- made a lot of racket with their Fugs/Godz-like performances 4/5 years ago. These six songs -- Recorded by Dan Burton (Early Day Miners, Ativin) in 2001 -- alternate between fields of gamelan suspension and surprising melodic, song-like, progression. Vocals, piano, kanun, organ, guitar, electronics, and homemade instruments create delicate, shifting sound poetry with a cryptic Mongolian/Turkish vibe. Fans of Charalambides, ESP-Disk and weird-ass music will enjoy. Limited edition of 10. (FV) the Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldiers CD/LP (V2) ................................................................... The Raconteurs are a new band made up of old friends, consisting of Jack Lawrence (bass, Greenhornes), Patrick Keeler (drums, Greenhornes), Brendan Benson (guitars, vocals, keys) and Jack White (guitars, vocals, keys, White Stripes). The seed was sewn in an attic in the middle of a hot summer when friends Jack White and Brendan Benson got together and wrote a song that truly inspired them. This song was "Steady, As She Goes" and the inspiration led to the creation of a full band with the addition of Lawrence and Keeler. While each of these four individuals have had successful careers with their own bands, the culmination of all of their talents is what truly makes The Raconteurs a force to be reckoned with. (AMA) Radio 4 - Enemies Like This (Astralwerks) ................................................................... It only takes a few seconds of Enemies Like This, the title track to Radio 4's new album, to realize that the Brooklyn-based band has returned with all cylinders fired up and with a rejuvenated sense of purpose. Radio 4 have never been ones to shy away from making a loud noise or issuing a firm statement, but on Enemies Like This, they've both streamlined and stretched their sound, they've cut the fat, trimmed the filler, and focused on the meat that makes the music, not the spices that can bury it. (AST) Twilight Singers - Powder Burns (One Little Indian) ................................................................... Greg Dulli - known and loved by many as the leader of pioneering alt-rockers Afghan Whigs - has recorded his 4th album under the celebrated Twilight Singers' moniker; and it's a veritable masterpiece. Dulli has long been appreciated as a unique voice. His lyrics are well-told personal yarns delivered with a ravenous intensity—which isn't to say that Dulli doesn't know how to write a great rock n' roll tune. With every new recording Dulli cements his place as a national musical treasure, consistently turning out great albums bursting with a soulfulness too often missing from 'rock' records. Clearly enjoying the freedom allowed by the Twilight Singers' ever revolving lineup, Dulli has pulled together an eclectic and viciously gifted lot for Powder Burns. Joseph Arthur, Ani DiFranco and Scott Bennett appear on the record, along with a guest spot from fellow Whig, John Curley. (AMA) Also out this week: T Bone Burnett - The True False Identity (Sony) Dinosaur Jr. - Green Mind & Where You Been [Reissues] CD (Rhino/WEA) Don Caballero - World Class Listening Problem (Relapse) Mason Jennings - Boneclouds CD (Sony) Thievery Corporation - Versions CD (Remixes) ................................................................... Tuesday, May 23rd @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 OBO ................................................................... Jon Mueller & Jim Schoenecker - http://jonmueller.net/ http://croutonmusic.com/ That Bitch Reptile Singing bowls, vibrating drums and a synth so cold it could re-freeze the polar caps. A minimalism that patiently builds from a whisper to muted holler. Jim Schoenecker (b.1975) is a fan of modular synthesis and a connoisseur of sine waves. He creates abstract digital minimalism, video game artifacts and processed hi-contrast synthesis. Jon Mueller was born in 1970 and started playing drums at the age of 15. For one year, he played only snare drum, which proved challenging to start a death metal band with. In 1990 he moved to Chicago, and studied drums with the late jazz legend Hal Russell. He eventually received a degree in English, and in 1999 finally completed the ridiculous novella Pianobread. Musically, he has been involved the groups Telecognac, Pele, and Collections of Colonies of Bees, playing drums, percussion, piano, and narrative. Always interested in the mysterious result of collaborations, he has recorded or performed with a broad range of artists, including Jarboe, saxophonist Bhob Rainey, sound artist Asmus Tietchens, and performed as part of cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm's Lightbox Orchestra. Saturday, May 27th @ 2PM EARLY @ Landlocked Music - FREE! ................................................................... Gentleman Caller - http://www.myspace.com/thegentlemancaller Chris Kupersmith (formerly of Fabric, Uvula) Kenny Childers has made his mark through his involvement with such bands as The Mysteries Of Life, Brando and Velo Deluxe. He has now hooked up with some of Bloomington's finest musicians to create a musical landscape that is deep, dark, and real. Gentleman Caller combine the soaring arrangements of The Zombies with the unerring sensibilities of New Order, then temper that sweetness with a dose of John Lennon's grittiness and Lou Reed's acerbic wit. Friday, June 9th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music ................................................................... Everything Now - http://www.everythingnowmusic.com/ Miranda Sound - http://www.mirandasound.com/ Tamar If Brian Wilson could start a stage-rock band with the stylings of Half-Handed Cloud and Of Montreal... Everything, Now! would be the name. Columbus, Ohio, quartet Miranda Sound crafts intelligent, cathartic post-punk epics that waver between lanky and tuneful. It's deceptively simple music that would do bands like Dismemberment Plan and Mission of Burma proud. What sets Miranda Sound apart from those hallowed names are the inexorably Midwestern melodies of lead singer-guitarists Billy Peake and Dan Gerken. Despite the weighty lyrics, the choruses sound like a Frankenstein's monster mash-up of Matthew Sweet and Robert Pollard - sweet, gritty and soaring. Miranda Sound also sports a studio sheen previously unrealized thanks to producer/D.C. legend J. Robbins (of Jawbox and Burning Airlines), whereupon Sean Sefcik's propulsive bass and Dan Bell's succinct drumming get the slick sonic treatment they deserve. "Western Reserve" finds Miranda Sound fulfilling its considerable potential amid the white noise of so many other post-punk poseurs. - Denver Post Thursday, July 27th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music ................................................................... Odawas (Bloomington, Jagjaguwar) Pumice (New Zealand) Good Stuff House (Chicago) Good Stuff House is the wonderful new project from matt christensen & mike weis of zelienope, with scott tuma of souled american, boxhead ensemble, etc... beautifully psychedelic, wide-open, atmospheric folk drift, full of mesmerizing microscopic textures... the sound is like holding a green leaf up the sun and studying the thousands of tiny veins & tones of color vibrating in the light... crystalline washes & layers of caressed & massaged strings, distant chimes, lush ear-to-the-dirt infinitely reverberating drones, trembling percussion, dusty harmonica cries and the creaking warmth of life itself. Some of the most evocative music of its type weave had the pleasure of laying ears on. Tuesday, August 1st @ TBA ...................................................................
