See, it doesnt get dark til late now (thanks, Mitch) so we just keep on workin and soon its past our bedtime. Ugh. But our hard work = your easy pleasure. We worked all weekend putting out a ton of used CDs and LPs. Like, hundreds of em! Come dig through the bins and find that gem you've always wanted... We can't keep up with all the good music coming through our doors, but we can guarantee that there is definitely more good stuff going out every single day. And plenty of great new stuff, too -- check it: Select New Releases for 05/23/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Blood Brothers - Love Rhymes With Hideous Car Wreck CD EP (V2) ................................................................... Since forming in 1997, the Seattle-based 5-piece have been gaining fans daily with their constant touring and mindblowing albums. Their sound is totally unique yet slightly familiar. Hints of Fagazi, Bad Brains, and Mars Volta but imagine these bands being played by Captain Beefheart. It's punk, it's hardcore, yet there's this undeniable groove that holds it together. The Love Rhymes With Hideous Car Wreck EP will not only serve as a fantastic entry point for the thousands of kids who saw the band with Coheed and Cambria, its also a great addition to the Blood Brothers catalogue. (AMA) Mission of Burma - The Obliterati CD/LP (Matador) ................................................................... Their third full-length studio album proper might be the most aggressive, raw, and challenging in the band's storied career. It's as relentless and engulfing an album as "Vs." some 24 years ago. Black humor, topical humor, general dense agro with hooks split into the sound like kindling. This is the next uneasy listening album of the year. "Sonic Youth sound like their cover band in comparison" (LAU/AMA) Murder by Death - In Bocca Al Lupo CD (Tent Show) ................................................................... Bloomington's own Murder By Death layer the vocal sounds of an old saloon with the haunting strings of a Hungarian folk dance and the hard driving rhythms of pure rock 'n' roll, producing lush, orchestrated songs somehow simultaneously reminiscent of Johnny Cash and Radiohead. Added to that thick and intriguing sound are a series of dark and ironic lyrics, combining the mood and tone of Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds with the narrative force of The Decemberists or a short story by Nathanial Hawthorne. This record examines themes of sin, transgression, punishment, and redemption, touching on different lives and different stories in each song. (AMA) Osaka Popstar - S/T CD (Ryko) ................................................................... Fronted by long-time Misfits collaborator John Cafiero and featuring the legendary Marky Ramone, Jerry Only (Misfits), Dez Cadena (Black Flag) and Ivan Julian (Richard Hell & the Voidoids), Osaka Popstar's superhero line-up rips through their first disc, doing justice to the best of NYC punk rock. Says Cafiero: "It's great to work with your friends and who better for a band than the guys who started the scene? This is my own personal Punk Rock And Roll Hall of Fame." The first single, "Wicked World" was written by renowned indie folk music icon Daniel Johnston, who also contributes vocals on a fervent cow-punk version of the traditional bluegrass lament "Man of Constant Sorrow." In addition, he has assembled a posse of colossal visual artists to complete an over-the-top, high energy, bursting-with-color package, including original Topps bubble-gum card guru John Pound (Wacky Packs artist and creator of the Garbage Pail Kids), Space Monkeys designer and urban legend Dalek, Batman and Justice League wizard Butch Lukic. Phoenix - It's Never Been Like That CD (Astralwerks) ................................................................... On its third full-length, Parisian quartet Phoenix has created its most immediately endearing album, condensing its members' talent for complex pop music into 10 concise nuggets of rock candy. This is the kind of record the Strokes and countless other newfangled pop/rock groups have been trying to make over the first half of the decade. But nobody's done it with such effortless flair as Phoenix. The band is capable of composing elaborate orchestral music and much poppier fare ("Too Young," from the "Lost in Translation" soundtrack). But here, the group concentrates on the visceral, and the results shine through in deceptively simple, richly textured songs like "One Time Too Many" and the exuberant rockers "Long Distance Call" and "Courtesy Laughs." (BBD) Vetiver - To Find Me Gone CD (Dicristina) ................................................................... To Find Me Gone is the second album by Andy Cabic's ever-evolving band Vetiver, released two years after the debut self-titled release. Andy has since toured the world, usually as a member of Devendra Banhart's band, and sometimes even with Vetiver. In those two years, Vetiver has expanded into a full-on singer-songwriter band/project, aided and abetted by some of the best players in the extended family of which Cabic finds himself a member. Reminiscent of Marc Bolan's hippy mystic period and old-world rootsiness - equal parts Stephen Foster, folk-blues, underground Southern music a la Norman Blake, and just the right modicum of indie emotionalism. It makes for a beautifully odd concoction. Playing instore at Landlocked later this summer - see below! (AMG) Scott Walker - the Drift CD/LP (4AD) ................................................................... One of the most enigmatic figures in rock history. At the height of psychedelia, Walker openly looked to crooners like Sinatra, Jack Jones, and Tony Bennett for inspiration, and to Jacques Brel for much of his material. None of those balladeers, however, would have sung about the oddball subjects -- prostitutes, transvestites, suicidal brooders, plagues, and Joseph Stalin -- that populated Walker's songs. His first four albums hit the Top Ten in the U.K. -- his second, in fact, reached number one in 1968, in the midst of the hippie era. He was a substantial, if largely overlooked, influence upon the vocal style of David Bowie and Bryan Ferry. His new work is indescribably barren and unutterably bleak. Seemingly undecided whether he's recording an opera or simply haunting one, Walker doesn't so much perform as project his lyrics, hurling them into the alternating maelstroms and moods that careen behind him. The effect is unsettling, to put it mildly. (AMG) the Walkmen - A Hundred Miles Off CD (Record Collection) ................................................................... The Walkmen features three members from Jonathan Fire Eater and two from the Recoys and have been solidifying their position as one of the most important bands in the alternative music community with their previous releases, "Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone" and "Bows And Arrows". Outstanding drumming and Leithauser's raspy croon are the stars of this show, resulting in an album that's more like their concerts than the meticulously crafted sound of their other albums. A Hundred Miles Off feels downright summery, from the Dylan-meets-mariachi-band vibe of "Louisiana" to the tropical rhythms and djembe that pepper "Brandy Alexander." There's also less reliance on the band's once-ubiquitous keyboards, with the notable exceptions of the poignant organ swells on "Emma, Get Me a Lemon" and "All Hands and the Cook," which switches between a rickety saloon piano and horror-show organs. MOUTHS aka Jon Mueller (percussion, cassettes) + Jim Schoenecker (analog synth, shortwave radio) - http://www.jonmueller.net/ - http://www.croutonmusic.com/ + That Bitch Reptile Singing bowls, vibrating drums and a synth so cold it could re-freeze the polar caps. A minimalism that patiently builds from a whisper to muted holler. Jim Schoenecker is a fan of modular synthesis and a connoisseur of sine waves. He creates abstract digital minimalism, video game artifacts and processed hi-contrast synthesis. Jon Mueller was born in 1970 and started playing drums at the age of 15. For one year, he played only snare drum, which proved challenging to start a death metal band with. In 1990 he moved to Chicago, and studied drums with the late jazz legend Hal Russell. He eventually received a degree in English, and in 1999 finally completed the ridiculous novella Pianobread. Musically, he has been involved the groups Telecognac, Pele, and Collections of Colonies of Bees, playing drums, percussion, piano, and narrative. Always interested in the mysterious result of collaborations, he has recorded or performed with a broad range of artists, including Jarboe, saxophonist Bhob Rainey, sound artist Asmus Tietchens, and performed as part of cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm's Lightbox Orchestra. That Bitch Reptile is Dan Wick and Chris Rall. They play several electr(on)ic instruments. Saturday, May 27th @ 2PM EARLY @ Landlocked Music - FREE! ................................................................... Gentleman Caller - http://www.myspace.com/thegentlemancaller Chris Kupersmith (formerly of Fabric, Uvula) Kenny Childers has made his mark through his involvement with such bands as The Mysteries Of Life, Brando and Velo Deluxe. He has now hooked up with some of Bloomington's finest musicians to create a musical landscape that is deep, dark, and real. Gentleman Caller combine the soaring arrangements of The Zombies with the unerring sensibilities of New Order, then temper that sweetness with a dose of John Lennon's grittiness and Lou Reed's acerbic wit. Everything Now - http://www.everythingnowmusic.com/ Miranda Sound - http://www.mirandasound.com/ Tamar If Brian Wilson could start a stage-rock band with the stylings of Half-Handed Cloud and Of Montreal... Everything, Now! would be the name. Columbus, Ohio, quartet Miranda Sound crafts intelligent, cathartic post-punk epics that waver between lanky and tuneful. It's deceptively simple music that would do bands like Dismemberment Plan and Mission of Burma proud. What sets Miranda Sound apart from those hallowed names are the inexorably Midwestern melodies of lead singer-guitarists Billy Peake and Dan Gerken. Despite the weighty lyrics, the choruses sound like a Frankenstein's monster mash-up of Matthew Sweet and Robert Pollard - sweet, gritty and soaring. Miranda Sound also sports a studio sheen previously unrealized thanks to producer/D.C. legend J. Robbins (of Jawbox and Burning Airlines), whereupon Sean Sefcik's propulsive bass and Dan Bell's succinct drumming get the slick sonic treatment they deserve. "Western Reserve" finds Miranda Sound fulfilling its considerable potential amid the white noise of so many other post-punk poseurs. - Denver Post Local newbies Tamar UK create the imaginary landscape of Suicide performing a reunion gig at Twin Peaks.
