Did we mention we are open on Mondays now? Pretty sure we did, but we nearly forgot til we found ourselves there, unlocking the doors and delivering the goods to you yesterday morning... which brings us to today. Please don't fear the beast. Just because its the 6th day of the 6th month of the 2006th year doesn't mean the apocalypse is upon us! It was on this day in 1972 that David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars" was released. So its not all so bad, right? (He also married Iman on this day in 1992!) Check out some of these potential future classics: Select New Releases for 06/06/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out of this Country CD/LP (Merge) ................................................................... The stellar new album from Glasgow's spectacular pop sextet was influenced by a wide variety of heroes: Jimmy Webb, Lloyd Cole, Connie Francis, Skeeter Davis, The Supremes, and David Lynch. Decidedly upbeat and catchy while also beautifully romantic, quiet, and reflective, this record does not disappoint. RIYL Belle & Sebastian, etc. Loren Connors - Night Through: Singles & Collected Works 3CD (Family Vineyard) ................................................................... Everything about this triple-disc set screams "classic" -- the scope, the rarities, the previously unreleased tracks, the packaging -- but most of all the music, Loren MazzaCane Connors' uniquely beautiful form of contemplative avant-blues. Call it experimental or primal, atonal or melodic, the man's music stands beyond such categories. Remastered from the original tapes by Jim O'Rourke, this is the definitive overview of Connors' journey as the consummate solo artist from embryonic origins in New Haven, CT to the rise as a monumental presence and spirit channeler. Whether considered avant garde or pure spirit haunt, Connors' guitar speaks purely from the soul in solo settings or with his revered collaborations with the likes of Alan Licht, Jandek, Keiji Haino, Christina Carter, Langille, O'Rourke, Kath Bloom and John Fahey. (AMG) Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint - The River in Reverse CD (Verve) ................................................................... Some inspired music has arrived in the wake of Hurricane Katrina (mainly on New Orleans-themed benefit albums), but nothing as audaciously ambitious as this cross-generational collaboration between Crescent City mainstay Allen Toussaint and former British upstart turned adventurously eclectic veteran Elvis Costello. Costello, long a huge fan of Toussaint's music, sings relatively familiar fare such as "On Your Way Down" and "Freedom for the Stallion" from Toussaint's extensive songbook along with obscurities mainly recorded by Dorsey. Toussaint supplies his distinctive piano and horn arrangements--as well as lead vocals on "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further?"--with Costello's Imposters serving as the rhythm section. Yet the real revelation comes from the new material, including the title track and five new Costello/Toussaint compositions that spotlight Toussaint's signature sound without diminishing Costello's creative contributions. (AMA) Ice Cube - Laugh Now, Cry Later CD (Lench Mob) ................................................................... "Laugh Now Cry Later" Ice Cube's 7th solo album since leaving the legendary NWA, features guest appearances by Snoop Dogg, Lil Jon, WC from Westside Connection, and Kokane. Production by Scott Scorch, Swizz Beatz, Lil Jon, Green Lantern and more. After a short intro, Cube goes right for the upper classes' throats with "Guns and Drugs," a track that acknowledges that there was a George Bush in office when he began his solo career, there's a George Bush in office as he returns to it, and he doesn't much care for either. This is his first effort on his own independent label, Lench Mob. (AMG) Ladyhawk - S/T CD/LP (Jagjaguwar) ................................................................... Ladyhawk sing about life and love. They're rockers and dreamers, still trapped in their apple country teenage minds, looking for girls and kicks, and mining their teenage quarries from the inside-out. This debut is a stomping and sweaty ride through the Vancouver streets they all know, as viewed from the seats of a bruised and doorless Astro Van. Ladyhawk's core is bracing rock. Neil Young's "Tonight's The Night" is the hailstorm on the hood of The Replacements' "Let It Be", while distorted guitars invoke the thread and swerve of Silkworm and Dinosaur Jr. It'll be hard to find a more hauntingly beautiful set of rock music than this debut. Metallic Falcons - Desert Doughnuts CD (Voodoo Eros) ................................................................... The Metallic Falcons are two soothsayers of nocturnal activities, bound together by fate and blood and a lifetime of musical collaboration. Their sound is best described as soft metal. A lyrical song cycle, this record is an emotional journey of Dungeons & Dragons proportions. The saintly melodies are always close to your heart while the secluded drums buzz like a growing and waning desert hum; ringing loud in your ears from the absence of any other sound. The Metallic Falcons are angels with second hand wings. One set dark and one set light. (AMA) Mojave 3 - Puzzles Like You CD/LP (4AD) ................................................................... Their fifth album for 4AD in a relationship that has now spanned a dozen years. "Puzzles" sees the band moving forward in an unexpected direction; these songs are more immediate and poppy than anything they recorded before. The album is filled with the life-affirming light of Mojave 3's Cornish home - splashed with sunlight and the heady sparkle of summertime waves. Subtle and gorgeous music from the former shoegeezers Slowdive. (AMA) Oakley Hall - Gypsum Strings CD (Brah) ................................................................... Long regarded as one of the best live acts in NY, Oakley Hall delivers this masterpiece, recorded over several sessions at the Sunset Grill in Brooklyn in late 2005. It's their second full-length of 2006 and first on Brah Records. Springing from 60's west coast legends like The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Bros., The Charlatans, and Moby Grape, adding elements of X, Neu, The Feelies, Mercury Rev, and Fairport Convention, this record finds the group refusing the dictates of stale No-Depression era norms. The sextet's trademark killer songwriting chops boast some beautiful ballads that temper the heavier tunes. All told, "Gypsum Strings" cements Oakley Hall's rep as luminaries of the new psych-roots movement. (AMA) Stuart Staples - Leaving Songs CD (Beggars Banquet) ................................................................... Staples is primarily known as the founding member of The Tindersticks. On his new solo album, Stuart brings forth melancholy and romanticism with an organic sensibility. "There's a gorgeous hesitation in Stuart Staples' voice - a sad hiccup that puts a crimp in his croon. Think Johnny Mathis meets Leonard Cohen" - NY Daily News. "Staples' quivering baritone conveys a sense of shellshock - one that he applies to both the darkness and the dawn, the ghosts of lovers yet to come" - Variety VA - The Big Mack Label CD (Numero Group) ................................................................... The fourth volume in the Eccentric Soul series examines the oil stained underside of the Motor City sound. There are no gold records, million dollar buyouts, or quaint museums at the end of the story, just a handful of four figure 45s, a box of photographs, and a condemned building. If Detroit was once an ocean of soul, the Big Mack label was certainly an island. Big Mack lasted an incredible twenty years with out so much as a sniff of a hit. Dogged by lack of airplay, distribution, and a general lack of understanding of the music business, the label failed on almost every level except where it counted; the music. From soulful doo-wop to blistering garage funk, a left at sultry R&B and then a quick dodge into budget Hendrix wailing over a steel drum break, this disc is the epitome of Eccentric Soul. Friday, June 9th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ................................................................... Everything Now (Muncie, Standard) - http://www.everythingnowmusic.com/ Miranda Sound (Sunken Treasure) - http://www.mirandasound.com/ Tamar (Bloomington) If Brian Wilson could start a stage-rock band with the stylings of Half-Handed Cloud and Of Montreal... Everything, Now! would be the name. Columbus, Ohio, quartet Miranda Sound crafts intelligent, cathartic post-punk epics that waver between lanky and tuneful. It's deceptively simple music that would do bands like Dismemberment Plan and Mission of Burma proud. What sets Miranda Sound apart from those hallowed names are the inexorably Midwestern melodies of lead singer-guitarists Billy Peake and Dan Gerken. Despite the weighty lyrics, the choruses sound like a Frankenstein's monster mash-up of Matthew Sweet and Robert Pollard - sweet, gritty and soaring. Miranda Sound also sports a studio sheen previously unrealized thanks to producer/D.C. legend J. Robbins (of Jawbox and Burning Airlines), whereupon Sean Sefcik's propulsive bass and Dan Bell's succinct drumming get the slick sonic treatment they deserve. "Western Reserve" finds Miranda Sound fulfilling its considerable potential amid the white noise of so many other post-punk poseurs. - Denver Post Local newbies Tamar UK create the imaginary landscape of Suicide performing a reunion gig at Twin Peaks. Whoa. This is NOT their website: http://tamaronline.com/ Saturday, June 24th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $3 ................................................................... Rogue Wave (San Fran, Sub Pop) - http://www.roguewavemusic.com/ Rogue Wave is a Bay Area band with Bloomington ties out the wazoo. Their sometimes drummer Pat Spurgeon has played with bands Antenna, Stranded at the Drive In, Brando, Steve Kowalski, and has also released solo work as The Phantom Drummer. Bassist Evan Farrell has played with the Japonize Elephants, Mega Mousse, Hunted Haunted Bazergahn Klezmorchestra, Grande Rouge, Kentucky Nightmare, and recently as lap steel guitarist for wunderkids Kate & Alex. The Wave will be crashing through for one day in between much bigger shows so show them some love at their home away from home. Monday, July 3rd @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ................................................................... Richard Swift (LA, Secretly Canadian) - http://www.richardswift.us/ + tba Kinda like that scene in High Fidelity, everytime we put this disc on the instore stereo, we sell a copy. Beginning with an arc of distant, echo-laden strings and a chorus of voices that sound as if they escaped from the buried and decaying reels of an aborted Disney film, Richard Swift's Secretly Canadian debut paints a world out of time from the very first note. The West Coast singer/songwriter has no qualms about resurrecting Franks Wild Years-era Tom Waits and filtering it through the "new weird America" sound of fellow crooners Andrew Bird and Devendra Banhart, but he manages to find the perfect balance between melody and texture. It's a lot like opening the doors to a packed speakeasy in the '30s, complete with choreographed dancing and well-coiffed but shady characters shaking hands in the corners. Swift's lo-fi, Tin Pan Alley dreamscapes are as lush as they are distant, relying on everything from barroom piano to programmed drums without ever seeming contemporary. Comprised of two records, 2001's Walking Without Effort and 2004's The Novelist, Swift has taken all of the best sepia-tone instrumental moments from Michael Penn and tenderized them into a hobo dinner with Ray Davies slinging the slop. Listeners will find themselves enchanted, disturbed, and speaking in metaphors for days. (AMG) Thursday, July 27th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ................................................................... Odawas (Bloomington, Jagjaguwar) - http://www.odawas.com/ Pumice (New Zealand, Last Visible Dog) - http://www.pumice.dogcountries.com/ Zelienople (Chicago) - http://www.zelienoplemusic.com/ Odawas are nicking all over the place: from Randy Newman's plain-spoken grandeur or Beach Boy story-telling or Angelo Badalamanti's cheesy romanticism or Charles Ives' avant-garde ear or Art Garfunkel's "presence-of-a-blue-whale" harmonies. Pumice recalls the absolute glorious best of Alistair Galbraith's psych-dirge lo-fi pop, but tempered with the kind of occasional instrumental dexterity that you might find on a Sun City Girls record. Zelienople are vaguely similar to the Brian Eno classic Music for Airports in the fact that there doesn't appear to be all that much going on, but you don't want to admit that out loud for fear of looking unrefined. One major difference is that Music for Airports was intended to be background music. If you put their CD Ink on in the background and go about doing your daily cleaning, you run the risk of missing a murder scene. Tuesday, August 1st @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ................................................................... Vetiver (San Fran, Dicristina Stair Builders) - http://www.vetiverse.com/ Lichens (Chicago, Kranky Records) - http://www.kranky.net/ Vetiver is a San Francisco band consisting of Andy Cabic, Devendra Banhart, Alissa Anderson, and Jim Gaylord. A well connected Bay Area musician, Cabic (also of Raymond Brake, Tussle) has assembled an all star lineup to play on his first record: Joanna Newsom plays harp on "Amerilie", Hope Sandoval sings on "Angels' Share", and My Bloody Valentine drummer Colm O'Ciosoig plays on "Luna Sea" and "On a Nerve." Of course Devendra Banhart makes his presence known on one of their best songs "Amour Fou", one of two songs Banhart co-wrote with Cabic. Reminiscent of Marc Bolan's hippy mystic period and old-world rootsiness - equal parts Stephen Foster, folk-blues, underground Southern music a la Norman Blake, and just the right modicum of indie emotionalism. It makes for a beautifully odd concoction. They just released their second record, To Find Me Gone, in mid-May. Recorded as a one-time improvisation without overdubbing, the three tracks on Lichens' debut, The Psychic Nature of Being, reveal and extend mesmeric live performances. Lowe mutates and extends his singing as he adds acoustic and electric guitars and percussion in layers that accent the vocal drones. "Lowe's finger picked acoustic guitar sounded like he's spent time pondering Fahey's legacy, but his looped, wordless vocals were reminiscent of Meredith Monk." - Chicago Reader More information about these shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://myspace.com/landlockedbton and http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------ We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
