We're back - did you miss us? Hope all y'all had a great little holiday break, we needed it. The show w/ Richard Swift went fantastically, ya shoulda been here! We didn't know we could fit so many people into our store. There hasn't been that many people in here since well, a couple weeks prior, when Rogue Wave did an instore performance. Come to another wonderful instore performance this friday, featuring the Blackthorns and Woodcat (both from Minneapolis) and the ever-delicious Whippoorwill. Read more about that later in this update... This is a heavy release day so let's get right to it: Breaking News: Rest in Peace, Syd Barret, original singer for Pink Floyd: http://arts.guardian.co.uk/news/obituary/0,,1817952,00.html Select New Releases for 07/11/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ David Bazan (Pedro the Lion frontman) - Fewer Moving Parts CD-EP ................................................................... Known mostly for his tenure performing as Pedro the Lion, songwriter David Bazan recently retired the band moniker to continue making music under his own name. On his debut self-released EP "Fewer Moving Parts," his signature songwriting, voice, and melodies are framed in layered harmonies, multi-tracked guitars, analog keyboards, and intricate production he was never able to fully realize with Pedro The Lion. The 10-song EP includes two different versions of five new Bazan songs -- one version is stripped down acoustic and another version has full-instrumentation. Acclaimed graphic novel artist and former Low bassist Zak Sally has created new original artwork for the EP. The Jesus and Mary Chain - DualDisc Reissue Series (Rhino) ................................................................... The Jesus And Mary Chain, who influenced your favourite band's favourite bands, were formed in 1984 just outside of Glasgow by singing, guitar-playing brothers William and Jim Reid. Long out of print in the US, the first five JAMC albums are being reissued by Rhino Records on DualDisc format. 1985's Psychocandy, 1987's Darklands, 1989's Automatic, 1992's Honey's Dead, and 1994's Stoned and Dethroned. Each reissue will be released with one side containing the remastered album and the other side featuring a high-resolution audio mix and three music videos. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and the Raveonettes have already pre-ordered these! (PFM) Muse - Black Holes & Revelations CD (WEA) ................................................................... In 2004, UK favorite Muse broke through in the US with Absolution and major performances across America that won legions of new fans. In 2006, Muse takes a bold new step with Black Holes And Revelations, a powerful, upbeat epic album that takes the band's music to a whole new dimension. Once again co-produced by Rich Costey, Muse incorporates influences from electronica and Prince to pure pop. The album is sure to be a revelation to those still unfamiliar with the 2005 Brit award winner for Best Live Act who headlines this summer's Reading and Leeds festivals. (AMA) Oneida - Happy New Year CD/LP (Jagjaguwar) ................................................................... No band has been so praised for such a wide range of music over the last ten years than Brooklyn's Oneida. Nobody has come close to matching their output of dazzlingly creative, uncategorizable music. Psychedelia, minimalism, maximalism, one-step, infinitewave, blah blah blah blah...it's all there, all the time; and Happy New Year, the band's ten billionth album, is Oneida's zenith. Simultaneously the most eclectic and most coherent album they have yet released, Happy New Year flows flawlessly from a traditional hymn of grim beauty through hypnotic rounds, thunderous kraut grooves, severe ballads, and other, indescribable music. (JAG) Peaches - Impeach My Bush CD/LP (XL) ................................................................... Peaches is a phenomenon, a self-made, self-produced, DIY leader of the electro-punk movement and mistress of the original dirty lyrical classics. Unique with her minimal pumping beats and loved by true innovators and fans as diverse as Deborah Harry, Iggy Pop, Bjork, Lil Kim, Kelis, Too Many DJs, M.I.A. and LCD Soundsystem, you'll be heartened to know she hasn't cleaned up her act on her new release, Impeach My Bush. Recorded in LA, the guests who dropped by to party and play on the record include Joan Jett, Josh Homme and Feist. (AMA) Shapes and Sizes - s/t CD (Asthmatic Kitty) ................................................................... Remember back in mid-March 2006, right after we opened our doors, when we hosted a great show by Mt Gigantic, Tigersaw, Dan Blakeslee and Shapes & Sizes? You saw and heard them first, before the international acclaim that is sure to flow from being signed to Sufjan's Asthmatic Kitty imprint. From Canada's misty Pacific Southwest emerges Shapes and Sizes, fully formed and self-defined, yet redolent with future promise. Shapes and Sizes' melodic pop inhabits a world of beauty, noise, whispers, and elusive, contradictory moods, where the dynamic of a steam piston gives way to elegiac understatement, often within one song. With three of its four members writing for the band, their repertoire is one of constant surprise, often going out on a limb, but never falling off. (AMK) Sufjan Stevens - The Avalanche CD (Asthmatic Kitty) ................................................................... The little secret behind the Illinois record is that it was Originally conceived as a double album, culminating in a musical collage of nearly 50 songs. But as the project began to develop into an unwieldy epic, common sense weighed in - as did the opinions of others - and the project was cut in half. But as 2005 came to a close, Sufjan returned to the old, forsaken songs on his 8-track like a grandfather remembering his youth, indulging in old journals and newspaper clippings. What he uncovered went beyond the merits of nostalgia; it was more like an ensemble of capricious friends and old acquaintances wearing party outfits, waiting to be let in at the front door, for warm drinks and interesting conversation. Among them were Saul Bellow, Ann Landers, Adlai Stevenson, and a brief cameo from Henry Darger's Vivian Girls. The gathering that followed would become the setting for the songs on The Avalanche: Outtakes and Extras from the Illinois Album. (AMK) Thom Yorke (Radiohead frontman) - the Eraser CD/LP (XL) ................................................................... "Don't call it solo," says Thom Yorke of The Eraser, "It doesn't sound right". Here, then, is the first one-man record from the vocalist of Radiohead, an excursion in electronic beats and synthetic textures hailed by many critics as a return to Radiohead's 2000 album, Kid A. Produced and "arranged" by long-time 'Head producer Nigel Godrich, featuring processed sounds taken from full-band sessions, and featuring at least one song originally mooted for appearance on Hail To The Thief, it appears as much an opportunity for Thom to build on the ideas not fully realised on full-band releases. Rock fans may lament Radiohead's shifts away from guitar, bass and drums, but it's hard to deny just how well Thom's voice fits amid the hissy cymbals and spectral synthesiser of 'The Eraser' and 'Black Swan'. Guitar surfaces on the haunting 'The Clock', Thom singing "You throw coins in the wishing well" over warped, droning folk, while album highlight 'Harrowdown Hill' strikes a rare explicitly political note for Thom, a track themed around the death of UN Weapons Inspector David Kelly. (AMA) VA - Musical Family Tree Vol 1: Delicious Berries CD (Luna) ................................................................... (LLM) 33 1/3 Book Series (Continuum Press) ................................................................... Continuum Press has embarked on an ambitious series entitled 33 1/3 devoted to a reconsideration of some of the more important LP releases of the past 40 years. Written by a disparate host of journalists, musicians, and academics, the 33 1/3 Series represents the Holy Grail of millions of late Baby Boomers who spent their adolescence pouring over the album sleeves of the newest releases by their favorite bands. There are all levels of writing here, from the hyper-academic (Led Zeppelin IV) to the highly personal (Dusty in Memphis). Over 30 titles so far, with more added each season, so keep an eye on our rapidly expanding bookshelf! Check out some of the upcoming performances: THIS COMING Friday, July 14th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ................................................................... Whippoorwill (Bton's favorite sons & daughters) the Blackthorns (Minneapolis) - http://theblackthorns.net/ Woodcat (Minneapolis) - http://myspace.com/woodcat Once upon a time there was a band called the Decanters... they created a great mix of country-tinged rock that is sorely missed. Members scattered and what was left behind was the soothing vocals and songs of Ms Nicole Evans-Groth. Fast forward and add in now hubby Jason Lee Groth-Evans, Chris Welz, Alex Mann, Jonathan Cargill, and Mikey Kapinus. The sound has lost a smidgen of its dark-lonesomeness, but is still every bit as delicious. The Blackthorns met in Minneapolis through their involvement in various punk, thrash, and no-wave projects, but were brought together by their common interest in the darker sounds of traditional American folk and country music. The band collectively writes songs with a core lineup of viola, cello, banjo, bass, drums, and vocals, sometimes swapping instruments and incorporating autoharp, accordion, saw, guitar, harmonica, and industrial-style found-object percussion. With these traditional tools, the Blackthorns play the sort of folk songs you'd expect to hear rising from the screen porch after a bomb has been dropped on a decaying Midwestern town. Woodcat are on tour w/ the Blackthorns and maintain the dark, cinematic folky feel of their tourmates. Guitar, bass, drums, cello, accordion, electronics. A great duo of darkness. RIYL midnight sing-alongs at the gypsy campfire, Sixteen Horsepower, Faun Fables, etc. Thursday, July 27th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ................................................................... Odawas (Bloomington, Jagjaguwar) - http://www.odawas.com/ Pumice (New Zealand, Last Visible Dog) - http://www.pumice.dogcountries.com/ Zelienople (Chicago) - http://www.zelienoplemusic.com/ Odawas are nicking all over the place: from Randy Newman's plain-spoken grandeur or Beach Boy story-telling or Angelo Badalamanti's cheesy romanticism or Charles Ives' avant-garde ear or Art Garfunkel's "presence-of-a-blue-whale" harmonies. Pumice recalls the absolute glorious best of Alistair Galbraith's psych-dirge lo-fi pop, but tempered with the kind of occasional instrumental dexterity that you might find on a Sun City Girls record. Zelienople are vaguely similar to the Brian Eno classic Music for Airports in the fact that there doesn't appear to be all that much going on, but you don't want to admit that out loud for fear of looking unrefined. One major difference is that Music for Airports was intended to be background music. If you put their CD Ink on in the background and go about doing your daily cleaning, you run the risk of missing a murder scene. Tuesday, August 1st @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ................................................................... Vetiver (San Fran, Dicristina Stair Builders) - http://www.vetiverse.com/ Lichens (Chicago, Kranky Records) - http://www.kranky.net/ Resting Rooster - http://myspace.com/restingrooster Vetiver is unfairly pigeonholed as merely a Devendra Banhart band-member / sidekick, on his second album, Andy Cabic made a musical statement that I don't think anybody expected. Calling upon influences from the entire modern history of folk music - as much from the English countryside as Southern California - To Find Me Gone is a modern classic. It hasn't become the year's breakout soft-rock hit, but any fan of Wilco or Joanna Newsom could fall in love with this one in a heartbeat. Reminiscent of Marc Bolan's hippy mystic period and old-world rootsiness - equal parts Stephen Foster, folk-blues, underground Southern music a la Norman Blake, and just the right modicum of indie emotionalism. It makes for a beautifully odd concoction. - Dusted Recorded as a one-time improvisation without overdubbing, the three tracks on Lichens' debut, The Psychic Nature of Being, reveal and extend mesmeric live performances. Lowe mutates and extends his singing as he adds acoustic and electric guitars and percussion in layers that accent the vocal drones. "Lowe's finger picked acoustic guitar sounded like he's spent time pondering Fahey's legacy, but his looped, wordless vocals were reminiscent of Meredith Monk." - Chicago Reader More information about these shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://myspace.com/landlockedbton and http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------ We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
