Its another slow release summer Tuesday here in Landlocked World Domination Enterprises. It might be hot outside, but its cool and air-conditioned inside LLHQ! Let's get our learn on: Today's celebrity birthdays include Vin Diesel, Hunter S. Thompson, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Nelson Mandela and Ricky Skaggs. On this day in history, the Great Fire of Rome began (64), the authority of the pope was declared void in England (1536), Ty Cobb set a major league baseball record in 1927 by getting his 4,000th career hit, and most importantly- In 1936 the first Oscar Meyer Wienermobile rolled out of General Body Company's factory in Chicago, IL. Fascinating. Maybe some of these new releases will be added to this esteemed list of factoids, you be the judge: Select New Releases for 07/18/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ French Kicks - Two Thousand CD (Vagrant) ................................................................... French Kicks are obsessed with possibility. For this band experimentation and self-discovery are the whole game, and the results of their continued explorations have set them in a category all their own, and earned them a dedicated audience. From the time they began as a raucous four piece with a singing drummer, to the more refined, intricate and subtle experimental pop band they are today, French Kicks have taken that experimentation always further, consistently trying to surprise and surpass themselves with each new chapter. Lisa Germano - In The Maybe World CD (Young God) ................................................................... Born in Mishawaka, Indiana - Lisa made her debut as John Mellencamp's violinist and fiddle player on his 1987 hit album Lonesome Jubilee. She began releasing her own music in the 90's, first on Capitol Records, and then several more albums through 4AD. These records created a very special "antique", lost carnival atmosphere - extremely personal, simultaneously self-effacing and confrontational missives of emotional damage and impossible love. Her side projects/collaborations include the album OP8 (w/ Giant Sand and Calexico) in which she is the featured singer, and diverse hired side-person stints with David Bowie, Neil Finn, Simple Minds, Iggy Pop, Indigo Girls and others. As an artist/performer, she's right up there with the cadre of strong, emotionally raw challenging and original women singers such as PJ Harvey, Marianne Faithful, Cat Power and Bjork. In the Maybe World features some of Lisa's best songs to date. Typically, her production and arrangements are inventive and completely unique, the words cut right to the core and her voice carries you gently off into a world where the distinctions between beauty, loss, love and pain tend to blur. The songs are immediately gratifying and sensual, but are also ultimately complicated and reward repeated listening. - M Gira Golden Smog - Another Fine Day CD/LP (Lost Highway) ................................................................... Jeff Tweedy might carry the name recognition, but the rest of his band-on-the-side carries the mail on the fourth release from this Midwest all-star group. Though the Wilco leader teams with the Jayhawks' Gary Louris on a pair of nimble pop songs--the elegantly strummed "Listen Joe" and Kinks cover "Strangers"--it's Louris who's clearly at the head of the class with self-assured vocals, lush harmonies and those unmistakable guitar leads. Soul Asylum guitarist Dan Murphy's obligatory rocker "Hurricane" is a high point, as is the album's lead track "You Make It Easy," which has Kraig Johnson warbling over a thumping piano lead and chunky fuzz guitar. But most welcome among the 15 songs are two contributions from Louris's fellow Jayhawk Marc Perlman: the refreshing "Corvette" and "Cure for This," a '60s-speckled pop song sung by Muni Loco, the wife of producer Paco Loco and the first female to grace a recording by Golden Smog. (AMA) Adam Green - Jacket Full of Danger CD (Rough Trade) ................................................................... New Yorker Adam Green releases his fourth album Jacket Full Of Danger. Recorded towards the end of 2005 in New York's Dumbo Studios with the band who accompanied Green on his recent tours, and the string arranger from Friends Of Mine; all under the watchful eye of long-term producer Dan Myers (Granddaddy, Rival Schools). If Green's previous records were colorful, this one bursts into full cinemascope. The songs instantly get under your skin, both musically and lyrically, and all told, Jacket is an exceedingly clever set, but one that doesn't call attention to just how smart it is. Definitely not your typical singer/songwriter, Adam Green is so much more than that, and this album has a classic, timeless feel to it, brilliantly drawing from divergent musical traditions, twisting from them an unique but incredibly familiar sound. Green's past albums have all been enjoyable affairs. This one, however, is a masterpiece. (AMG) Hidden Cameras - The Arms of his "Ill" CD (Absolutely Kosher) ................................................................... A mix of queer politics, explicit sexuality, symphonic indie pop and theatrical spectacle that borders on the religious, Toronto's the Hidden Cameras are the brainchild of singer/songwriter/guitarist Joel Gibb. The 2001 debut album Ecce Homo -- a collection of four-track demos released on Gibb's own Evil Evil imprint -- introduced a stripped-down version of the Hidden Cameras' witty, acoustic-based songwriting, which drew comparisons to the Magnetic Fields and Belle & Sebastian. Ecce Homo also caught the ear of Rough Trade, whose signing of Gibb made the Hidden Cameras the first Canadian artist on the label in its 25-year history. Previously only available on vinyl, Absolutely Kosher releases the CD version of The Arms of his "ill". These four-track recordings form the companion album to 2004's Mississauga, Goddam. Check out some of the upcoming performances: Thursday, July 27th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ................................................................... Odawas (Bloomington, Jagjaguwar) - http://www.odawas.com/ Pumice (New Zealand, Last Visible Dog) - http://www.pumice.dogcountries.com/ Zelienople (Chicago) - http://www.zelienoplemusic.com/ Odawas are nicking all over the place: from Randy Newman's plain-spoken grandeur or Beach Boy story-telling or Angelo Badalamanti's cheesy romanticism or Charles Ives' avant-garde ear or Art Garfunkel's "presence-of-a-blue-whale" harmonies. Pumice recalls the absolute glorious best of Alistair Galbraith's psych-dirge lo-fi pop, but tempered with the kind of occasional instrumental dexterity that you might find on a Sun City Girls record. Zelienople are vaguely similar to the Brian Eno classic Music for Airports in the fact that there doesn't appear to be all that much going on, but you don't want to admit that out loud for fear of looking unrefined. One major difference is that Music for Airports was intended to be background music. If you put their CD Ink on in the background and go about doing your daily cleaning, you run the risk of missing a murder scene. Tuesday, August 1st @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ................................................................... Vetiver (San Fran, Dicristina Stair Builders) - http://www.vetiverse.com/ Lichens (Chicago, Kranky Records) - http://www.kranky.net/ Resting Rooster - http://myspace.com/restingrooster Vetiver is unfairly pigeonholed as merely a Devendra Banhart band-member / sidekick, on his second album, Andy Cabic made a musical statement that I don't think anybody expected. Calling upon influences from the entire modern history of folk music - as much from the English countryside as Southern California - To Find Me Gone is a modern classic. It hasn't become the year's breakout soft-rock hit, but any fan of Wilco or Joanna Newsom could fall in love with this one in a heartbeat. Reminiscent of Marc Bolan's hippy mystic period and old-world rootsiness - equal parts Stephen Foster, folk-blues, underground Southern music a la Norman Blake, and just the right modicum of indie emotionalism. It makes for a beautifully odd concoction. - Dusted Recorded as a one-time improvisation without overdubbing, the three tracks on Lichens' debut, The Psychic Nature of Being, reveal and extend mesmeric live performances. Lowe mutates and extends his singing as he adds acoustic and electric guitars and percussion in layers that accent the vocal drones. "Lowe's finger picked acoustic guitar sounded like he's spent time pondering Fahey's legacy, but his looped, wordless vocals were reminiscent of Meredith Monk." - Chicago Reader More information about these shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://myspace.com/landlockedbton and http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------ We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
