Hard to believe it is already the midpoint of our first summer together... We still remember those early days back in spring of '06 when we were still a little shy around one another and coyly exchanged glances and brushed our hands occasionally, batted eyelashes. Now here we are, hot and heavy and in L-U-V these steamy summer nights. Baby, we can't wait to see you again. Make it soon, we can hardly take it! We are soooo ready for you and we can tell from the look in your eyes that you look forward to being deep inside our store and stocking up on all these sexy new releases. Select New Releases for 07/25/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Jessica Bailiff - Feels Like Home CD (Kranky) ................................................................... Feels Like Home balances the more accoustic approach to Jessica's songwriting on her most recent album with the blissed electricity found on her earlier material. Gossamer vocals hover over delicate melodies, accented by tasteful bits of percussion, piano filigrees, and sundry guitar sounds. Feels Like Home is the most refined example of Jessica Bailiff's musical vision to date. It's the first full length of solo material from Jessica in 4 years but she's been doing anything but taking a break. Check her fruitful collaborations with Dave Pearce (as Clear Horizon), Rachel Goldstar (as Eau Claire), and Jesse Edwards (as Northern Song Dynasty), as well as a featured appearance on Odd Nosdam's latest album where she made vocal and instrumental contributions. (KRK) Bonnie Prince Billy - Cursed Sleep 12"/CD-EP (Drag City) ................................................................... "Cursed Sleep" is a lovely opening glance at a record that's going to obsess your life over the next couple years — cascades of strings, slick guitar leads and a moaning lead from Bonny, twinned with harmonies from the ineffable Dawn the Faun McCarthy, achingly melodic and pure. The bonus material takes off an another direction, bumping butts with a bobbing motion and screaming frightfully in total exhilaration. Then there's "God's Small Song," a wash of beauty that takes us back to The Letting Go. (DC) Excepter - Alternation 2LP/CD (5RC) ................................................................... Excepter is a NY vocal and freestyle electronics band synthesizing live group performance with intuitive sequencing technology. Persistent drum-machine, clouds of synth, echoed timbales, ghostly voices, two-note loop and shaken percussion. Mysterious but spookier messy patterns and chaos dominate. (5RC) Sleepy Jackson - Personality CD (Astralwerks) ................................................................... Spaced-out pop maestro; blue-eyeliner wearing rock'n'roll genius; Australia's answer to Brian Wilson -Luke Steele -aka The Sleepy Jackson- has already been called all these things and more. No wonder he lives in the most isolated city on Earth. Anywhere else, with all these critical garlands, he could end up suffocating. From the opening bars of "You Needed More" to Todd Rundgren-esque closer "How Was I Supposed To Know?" we are witness to a songwriting master-class with a production sound Phil Specter would be proud of. Grand pianos arrive by the score; battalions of trumpets emerge at every chorus; backing vocals arrive by the truck load and string sections soar with a celestial abandon. Above it all, Luke applies thunderbolt guitars and a lead vocal seemingly constructed from cotton candy. Imagine a thirties Broadway production of The Beatles Revolver and you're still only halfway there. (AST) Jurassic 5 - Feedback CD (LP soon) (Interscope) ................................................................... It's understandable when artists want to grow their fan base in order to more easily make a living and also reach a larger group of listeners. The trick, of course, is how to do this without releasing artistically compromised records that, well, suck. L.A. underground vets J5 were almost a supergroup from the start, combining the formidable talents of the Unity and Rebels of Rhythm crews. If anyone deserves to move beyond the backpack clique, it's them. the Knife - Silent Shout CD (LP soon) (Mute) ................................................................... From darkest azure to black with hints of purple. From the outset it looked like it would be a body of work consisting only of shades of grey but at last the colours arrived - even if they turned out to be the darker nuances existing on the palette. Silent Shout is more focused than Deep Cuts, and not just because it features 11 tracks where its predecessor had 17. The songs are rich with detail, thoughts and ideas and innovations piled hard on top of each other. It may not make you want to dress up as a crow in the snow. But its jaw-dropping fusion of technology and emotion, circuitry and the soul, melodrama and melody, will leave you gasping. (INS) Midlake - The Trials Of Van Occupanther CD (Bella Union) ................................................................... Five highly talented musicians from the North Texas School of Music have come together to create a unique sound, tapping into an arsenal of technical skill and unbridled creativity. Cocteau Twins bassist Simon Raymonde stumbled upon a copy of their work in progress and fell deeply in love with the band, signing them to his label, Bella Union Records. The band continued to work day and night to create what would become their debut album. They recorded and mixed at their home in Denton, and mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London. The result is an album of incredible vision, talent, dedication and eccentricity. Not since Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs has an American band sounded so completely of itself, so off kilter, and quite so bewitching. (Q) Mission of Burma - 8 x 12" (Matador) ................................................................... It wasn't long ago that Mission of Burma released their triumphant return to the playing field - the Obliterati. As an intense promotion, their label, Matador, issued a crazy concept unto the superfans - limited edition 12 inches from the album - each one containing one song and the b-side having a different etching on each. Matador had a few left over and sold them to stores. We only received two of these. When they're gone, they are gone. First come, first serve. New York Dolls - One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This CD (Roadrunner) ................................................................... The New York Dolls formed in '71 and released two LPs that turned the rock scene on its head with their one of a kind attitude, style, and sound. They were on a track to domination when the ride stopped with the death of guitarist Johnny Thunders. The band parted ways as their legacy continued to grow and spawn and inspire new genres and bands. They inspired punk with the Sex Pistols and Ramones all the way to the modern day stars like Green Day. They inspired glam with their look being the foundation on which Motley Crue, Poison and more built their names. Their iconic logo captures a moment in time and is a part of Rock N Roll iconography. Over the last 30 years the band's story has been marred of drama and tragedy with the deaths of Thunders, bassist Arthur Kane and drummer Jerry Nolan. All of this would have stopped an ordinary band, but nothing about the Dolls is ordinary. Morrissey begged the band to reform and play a festival date in '04. Now in 2006, the band returns with the follow-up to 1974's Too Much Too Soon that proves that the band hasn't lost a step and that they are ready to show the world what they've been missing. Check out some of the upcoming performances: Thursday, July 27th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ................................................................... Odawas (Bloomington, Jagjaguwar) - http://www.odawas.com/ Pumice (New Zealand, Last Visible Dog) - http://www.pumice.dogcountries.com/ Zelienople (Chicago) - http://www.zelienoplemusic.com/ Odawas are nicking all over the place: from Randy Newman's plain-spoken grandeur or Beach Boy story-telling or Angelo Badalamanti's cheesy romanticism or Charles Ives' avant-garde ear or Art Garfunkel's "presence-of-a-blue-whale" harmonies. Pumice recalls the absolute glorious best of Alistair Galbraith's psych-dirge lo-fi pop, but tempered with the kind of occasional instrumental dexterity that you might find on a Sun City Girls record. Zelienople are vaguely similar to the Brian Eno classic Music for Airports in the fact that there doesn't appear to be all that much going on, but you don't want to admit that out loud for fear of looking unrefined. One major difference is that Music for Airports was intended to be background music. If you put their CD Ink on in the background and go about doing your daily cleaning, you run the risk of missing a murder scene. Tuesday, August 1st @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ................................................................... Vetiver (San Fran, Dicristina Stair Builders) - http://www.vetiverse.com/ Lichens (Chicago, Kranky Records) - http://www.kranky.net/ Resting Rooster (Ex-Vegetables) - http://myspace.com/restingrooster Vetiver is unfairly pigeonholed as merely a Devendra Banhart band-member / sidekick, on his second album, Andy Cabic made a musical statement that I don't think anybody expected. Calling upon influences from the entire modern history of folk music - as much from the English countryside as Southern California - To Find Me Gone is a modern classic. It hasn't become the year's breakout soft-rock hit, but any fan of Wilco or Joanna Newsom could fall in love with this one in a heartbeat. Reminiscent of Marc Bolan's hippy mystic period and old-world rootsiness - equal parts Stephen Foster, folk-blues, underground Southern music a la Norman Blake, and just the right modicum of indie emotionalism. It makes for a beautifully odd concoction. - Dusted Recorded as a one-time improvisation without overdubbing, the three tracks on Lichens' debut, The Psychic Nature of Being, reveal and extend mesmeric live performances. Lowe mutates and extends his singing as he adds acoustic and electric guitars and percussion in layers that accent the vocal drones. "Lowe's finger picked acoustic guitar sounded like he's spent time pondering Fahey's legacy, but his looped, wordless vocals were reminiscent of Meredith Monk." - Chicago Reader More information about these shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://myspace.com/landlockedbton and http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------ We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
