Os Mutantes were one of the best Brazilian psychedelic bands in the late 60s. This is the domestic reissue of their first four albums on CD. Their debut is one of the most playful rock records of its time - and given that it arrived in the year of the "White Album" and "We're Only in It for the Money", that's really saying something. Screaming acid-rock guitars, quick-cut rhythmic shifts, sound effects, jazzy vocal harmonies, and a giddy nod to "Peppermint Twist" all have their places here. This enticing music is every bit as fresh as it must've sounded to South American swingers back in the day. (AMA) VA - Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited (Verve) ................................................................... When a cover album was planned by for the fifteenth anniversary of his last lungful of Gitane smoke, it quickly became obvious that only foreign groups and artists could give new life to a repertoire so ingrained in French culture. Invitations were sent out and the overwhelmingly positive responses returned like boomerangs. Everyone rushes for Gainsbourg, and the cast list speaks for itself - some of the most prominent British and American artists of the last ten years are featured. From Tricky to Franz Ferdinand, from Cat Power to The Rakes, from Placebo to Michael Stipe (REM), from Portishead to Marianne Faithfull, from Jarvis Cocker to The Kills... "Pas degueu !" (not too rotten), as Gainsbourg would have said. Maintaining the links with the past, some of the best known original singers also agreed to appear: Francoise Hardy, Dani, and above all Jane Birkin! Vetiver (San Fran, Dicristina Stair Builders) - http://www.vetiverse.com/ Lichens (Chicago, Kranky Records) - http://www.kranky.net/ Resting Rooster (ex-Vegetables) - http://myspace.com/restingrooster Vetiver is unfairly pigeonholed as merely a Devendra Banhart band-member / sidekick, on his second album, Andy Cabic made a musical statement that I don't think anybody expected. Calling upon influences from the entire modern history of folk music - as much from the English countryside as Southern California - To Find Me Gone is a modern classic. It hasn't become the year's breakout soft-rock hit, but any fan of Wilco or Joanna Newsom could fall in love with this one in a heartbeat. Reminiscent of Marc Bolan's hippy mystic period and old-world rootsiness - equal parts Stephen Foster, folk-blues, underground Southern music a la Norman Blake, and just the right modicum of indie emotionalism. It makes for a beautifully odd concoction. - Dusted Recorded as a one-time improvisation without overdubbing, the three tracks on Lichens' debut, The Psychic Nature of Being, reveal and extend mesmeric live performances. Lowe mutates and extends his singing as he adds acoustic and electric guitars and percussion in layers that accent the vocal drones. "Lowe's finger picked acoustic guitar sounded like he's spent time pondering Fahey's legacy, but his looped, wordless vocals were reminiscent of Meredith Monk." - Chicago Reader Friday, August 11th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - FREE! ................................................................... Henry "Chunklet" Owings + David Coonce Stand-up Comedy + tba maybe? Chunklet was started in the early part of the 90s by five disgruntled writers for the weekly arts & entertainment rag The Flagpole in Athens, Georgia. The first four issues were cranked out in little over a year on the fronts and backs of one piece of paper. Nowadays, Chunklet is a paragon of satire for the holy cows of underground music and culture. Now up to 19 big, beautiful issues, Chunklet's newest release is the 200 page Overrated Book. Ever since the early 90s, the magazine has mercilessly lampooned the music industry, and is one of the most loved reads for the hippest bands and music aficionados. In recent issues, the magazine has an official guide of what music not to buy and made extensive charts of a Pay Not To Play system, offering bands large amounts of money to breakup, and Adopt a Gutter Punk program to make the world smell just a tiny bit better. The magazine has a highly graphic style and combines the work of political cartoonist Ted Rall with many talented, young artists from the Cartoon network as well as the musings of David Cross, Sarah Silverman, Patton Oswalt, Janeane Garofalo, Brian Posehn, and Zach Galifianakis. Henry is driving around to stores across the nation showing film clips, playing music, and talking to us fans about his trials and tribulations. Join us for this unique evening of laughter! Thursday, August 17th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ................................................................... A night of Experimental Electronic Sound Duos with: HZL (Philadelphia) xeromeM (Bton) Tim Albro and Jesse Kudler are electronic improvisers from Philadelphia. One uses table-top guitar, synthesizer, contact mic, various objects and devices, and sundry electronics. The other uses a rig that incorporates radio and an archtop guitar prepared with surface-mounted speakers inside its body. Jesse attended Wesleyan University, where he studied music with Ron Kuivila, Alvin Lucier, and a little bit with Anthony Braxton, among others. He eventually became active as an organizer and performer in improvised, experimental, and electronic music, forming a regular duo with fellow student Jonathan Zorn and leading the large electronic improvising ensemble Phil Collins. Their live performances have focused on subtle room-filling drones and textures, with speakers arrayed around the audience, evoking installation art as much as musicians on a stage. xeromeM is an improvised electronic music duo with Rob Dietz (DiZi) and Jeremy Kennedy (Puppy vs Dyslexia) on samplers and processors. They start with nothing and end up who-knows-where. More information about these shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://myspace.com/landlockedbton and http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------ We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
