Wow. Last night, your humble narrator witnessed one helluva live performance over in Louisville from the legendary Tom Waits. Quite an experience, and who'd have thunk he'd have such good stories about dog treats? Regardless, the eyes are slow to open this morn so forgive for the lack of laugh-out-loud humor - in order to get that, you should come witness funnyman Henry Owings (more info below) at Landlocked this friday night as humor such as this is expounded upon: Q: What should you do if you see a member of My Chemical Romance staggering off stage? A: Reload. Select New Releases for 08/08/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Comets On Fire - Avatar CD/LP (Sub Pop) ................................................................... After 2004's critically acclaimed Blue Cathedral, one might have expected Comets on Fire to blast off into the cosmos in an infinite flurry of lysergic spasmodicism. Surprising, then, that they should turn in an earthy, more accessible and downright beautiful album as their follow-up. On Avatar, Comets display development in every direction: as musicians, as songwriters, as arrangers and as singers, without sacrificing one ounce of the intensity that is expected from our heroes. As on Blue Cathedral, the diversity of the material is staggering. Avatar veers from swinging, bluesy explorations to piano-laced, progressive power balladry, to pure tribalism, evoking everyone from the Allmans, to Quicksilver, to Procol Harum, to some insane Fela/Sun Ra/Crazy Horse hybrid, yet remains wholly Comets on Fire. Daughters - Hell Songs CD (Hydrahead) ................................................................... If you're not familiar with Providence, RI's Daughters, ask yourself this: where the hell have you been? They've basically injected grind and all manners of extreme heaviness with a much-needed dose of lube, style, and danger. This is their second album, following 2003's "Canada Songs". "Spaz-core aficionados Daughters are always on the road, cramming peoples' eye holes and ear holes with blasts of high-density noise" "Excellent spastic grind and discordant chaos" Ani Difranco - Reprieve CD (Righteous Babe) ................................................................... Across 12 tracks, DiFranco ignites more of her signature blend of poetry, politics and musicianship. In addition to the usual array of acoustic and electric guitars, Ani can be heard on keyboards, drums, and other instruments, while Todd contributes bass, wurlitzer, pump organ, piano and "fakey-bakey" trumpet and strings. The album was tracked in her New Orleans studio in early 2005 during a break in her usually heavy touring schedule. Forced to leave the master recordings behind before Hurricane Katrina, she drove back into the city to retrieve them just three days after the levees broke. From there she headed back to overdub in her hometown of Buffalo with whatever instruments happened to be on hand. Matt Friedberger - Winter Women/Holy Ghost Language School 2CD (859) ................................................................... Matthew Friedberger is one half of the brother and sister duo The Fiery Furnaces. The first disc, Winter Women, clocking in at one hour, showcases his strength as a songwriter and features some of the most accessible and infectious pop songs he's ever written. Winter Women is a summer record, full of catchy and un-ironic pop songs. The second disc Holy Ghost Language School is the more 'experimental' of the two and is about Xenolalia, the act of spontaneously speaking in foreign languages. Matt turns the concept into a 46 minute combustible sonic novel of original songs in wholly subjective arrangements of clattering guitars and scattered lyrics. Matt wrote and arranged all the music, played all the instruments (except for some drumming from John McEntire from Tortoise) and is the only vocalist throughout. Adrian Orange (Thanksgiving) - Bitches is Lord CD (Marriage) ................................................................... For being so young, Adrian Orange has certainly put out a lot of records. Working under the name Thanksgiving, the native of Portland, OR, released his first record, We Could Be Each Other's Evidence in 2002 at age 16. Commonly associated with Phil Elverum (The Microphones, Mount Eerie), who produced Welcome/Nowhere and has stated that "the best songs ever written are being written RIGHT NOW by Adrian Orange", he has ditched his band-moniker for this, his new album. the Sadies - In Concert 2CD (Yep Roc) ................................................................... The kings of Canadian turbo twang bend genres like they bend strings on this 40-cut, star-studded extravaganza. On the original numbers that open the two-disc live recording, the quartet apply their giddyup gallop to the instrumentals and soaring harmonies to the songs, before sharing the stage with dozens of luminaries who make this a "last thrash" equivalent to the Band's Last Waltz. Guests include Neko Case and Jon Langford, Kelly Hogan, Jon Spencer, the Band's Garth Hudson, the Jayhawks' Gary Louris and the frontmen from Blue Rodeo. It's hard to imagine another band ransacking the songbooks of Roger Miller, Pink Floyd, Bob Wills, and the Mekons without suffering stylistic whiplash, but the raw vitality of the performance transcends category. Sebadoh - III (2CD reissue) (Domino) ................................................................... It's hard to call this the shot heard 'round the world, but in its own way, "III", along with "Slanted And Enchanted", opened up a creative way by ransacking the vestiges of the 80's American underground. The original album is a schizophrenic adventure, from Lou Barlow's plaintive songwriting to Eric Gaffney's noisier psychedelically minded etudes. Long out of print, this landmark album contains the 23-track original album on disc one and a whole album's worth of additional bonus material. Sigur Ros - Saeglopur CD-EP/DVD (EMI) ................................................................... More delicious cinematic mightiness from Iceland's favorite new sons. A deluxe CD single plus bonus DVD of this track, taken from their successful Takk album. The CD single features 'Saeglopur' plus three unreleased b-sides: 'Refur', 'O Fridur' and 'Kafari'. The bonus DVD features videos for all three of the singles taken from Takk: 'Saeglopur', 'Hoppipolla' and 'Glosoli'. Slayer - Christ Illusion CD (WEA) ................................................................... The fastest, heaviest and darkest band on earth retakes its unholy throne with Slayer's first studio album in six years and its first studio effort with the original lineup, including drummer Dave Lombardo, since 1990's Seasons In The Abyss. The Legend of Apple Jack DVD+CD (Hit Thing) ................................................................... Apple Jack was the winner of Best Film in the Los Angeles International Short Film Festival 2003. Written and directed by Mark Whiting, who is widely known for his legendary production design for the animation film The Iron Giant, the film has shocked viewers with it's breathtaking night time forest scenes and hilarious actors. The film score was produced by Toby Dammit (Swans, Iggy, Bertrand Burgalat) and features a 21-piece orchestra. The music is in the traditional style of 1940s Disney orchestral scores combined with raw American bluegrass and hair raising 50s sci-fi horror. Apple Jack is narrated by country music legend Randy Travis. The entire film takes place on a farm in Midwestern America on the eve of Halloween 1938 - the legendary evening of the Mercury Theatre Broadcast of The War of the Worlds. Starring twin brothers Cole & Dylan Sprouse as Jack and Academy Award-winner Walton Goggins as well as Gene Dynarski (from X-Files and Star Trek:TNG). Henry "Chunklet" Owings the comedy stylings of Dave Coonce Rovad Chunklet was started in the early part of the 90s by five disgruntled writers for the weekly arts & entertainment rag The Flagpole in Athens, Georgia. The first four issues were cranked out in little over a year on the fronts and backs of one piece of paper. Nowadays, Chunklet is a paragon of satire for the holy cows of underground music and culture. Now up to 19 big, beautiful issues, Chunklet's newest release is the 200 page Overrated Book. Ever since the early 90s, the magazine has mercilessly lampooned the music industry, and is one of the most loved reads for the hippest bands and music aficionados. In recent issues, the magazine has an official guide of what music not to buy and made extensive charts of a Pay Not To Play system, offering bands large amounts of money to breakup, and Adopt a Gutter Punk program to make the world smell just a tiny bit better. The magazine has a highly graphic style and combines the work of political cartoonist Ted Rall with many talented, young artists from the Cartoon network as well as the musings of David Cross, Sarah Silverman, Patton Oswalt, Janeane Garofalo, Brian Posehn, and Zach Galifianakis. Henry is driving around to stores across the nation showing film clips, playing music, and talking to us fans about his trials and tribulations. Join us for this unique evening of laughter! So Dave Coonce walks into a bar with a steering wheel coming out of his zipper... From the mistellings of Laffy Taffy jokes, to inappropriate laughter at those things near and dear to us, Dave is back to bring the thunder unto thee. Who be the ONE true Nastie? That Rovad! Who be the one who got the sexualism in spades? Rovad, that who! Who be the dude in the blingin' mobile, stompin' and chompin' and steppin' to the ladies with that Dog Eat Dog Sly Smile? Once again, Rovad! Rovad says "Rovad" and the fellas start to jump. Rovad says "Rovad" and the chicas start to bump. You wanna come at me with that wicked rawnchee tongue? Betta take a step back and see what ROVAD BRUNG. You feel your stankie lyfe ain't nuttin but the PITS? Cruise wit' ROVAD, brodog, and eat some greasie grits. All the corporations be eatin' outta ROVAD'S Hands, so lest you luv tha loser you gotsta unnerstand. Stop the presses, drop yo' dresses: ROVAD RULES! Thursday, August 17th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ................................................................... A night of Experimental Electronic Sound Duos with: HZL (Philadelphia) xeromeM (Bton) Tim Albro and Jesse Kudler are electronic improvisers from Philadelphia. One uses table-top guitar, synthesizer, contact mic, various objects and devices, and sundry electronics. The other uses a rig that incorporates radio and an archtop guitar prepared with surface-mounted speakers inside its body. Jesse attended Wesleyan University, where he studied music with Ron Kuivila, Alvin Lucier, and a little bit with Anthony Braxton, among others. He eventually became active as an organizer and performer in improvised, experimental, and electronic music, forming a regular duo with fellow student Jonathan Zorn and leading the large electronic improvising ensemble Phil Collins. Their live performances have focused on subtle room-filling drones and textures, with speakers arrayed around the audience, evoking installation art as much as musicians on a stage. xeromeM is an improvised electronic music duo with Rob Dietz (DiZi) and Jeremy Kennedy (Puppy vs Dyslexia) on samplers and processors. They start with nothing and end up who-knows-where.
