This past friday we welcomed funnyman, designer and all around nice guy Henry "Chunklet" Owings into our humble shoppe for a night of hi-jinks and good times. Laughs were had, products were exchanged for currency, and a quality night was had by all. For those who did not make it, we are selling the full spread of Chunklet DVDs as well as the latest issue of his magazine and his new book. Check em out next time you are here. This is the last week before the imminent return of the students to Bloomington. There are not many new releases this week, so maybe this is the perfect opportunity for you to stock up on the great titles you have missed out on over the summer as you prep for the oncoming armageddon of the school year. Dig in... Select New Releases for 08/15/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Hot Snakes - Thunder Down Under CD/LP (Swami) ................................................................... Hot Snakes, one of the biggest bands on Swami, consisted of members from Rocket From The Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, Blackheart Procession, Beehive and the Barracudas. Album caught on tape in Australia at Triple J for Radio Broadcast, recorded by Grammy nominee Greg Wales (Radio Birdman, You Am I). All recordings unreleased (some songs appear in different form on past records). These are the last studio recordings before the band broke up. (INS) the Monkees - 2CD reissue series (Rhino) ................................................................... Originally released in 1966, The Monkees debut scored an amazing 78-week run on the Billboard album chart, with 13 weeks at #1. Includes the #1 smash "Last Train To Clarksville" and the infectious "(Theme From) The Monkees," both written for the band by hit songwriting team Boyce & Hart. Also features "Take A Giant Step" and "Saturday's Child". Their second album was the band's top seller, racking up 70 weeks on Billboard's album chart, including 18 weeks at #1, and becoming the 3rd best-selling LP of the '60s (ranking higher than any Beatles album). Each 2-CD Deluxe Limited Edition features the original stereo album with bonus rarities on Disc 1, and the original mono album with even more rare treasures on Disc 2. (AMA) Sex Pistols - Spunk CD (reissue) ................................................................... The classic line-up of Paul Cook, Steve Jones, Glenn Matlock and Johnny Rotten blast their way through would-be classics prior to Matlock leaving and the rest recording the legendary Never Mind The Bollocks. Originally released in the UK during September or October 1977 the album comprises studio demos and chatter recorded with Dave Goodman during 1976 and early 1977. Many Sex Pistols fans concur with Malcolm McLaren and producer Goodman, that the raw versions of the songs on Spunk are superior to the officially released ones, particularly since Spunk approximates a faithful reproduction of the original Sex Pistols line-up's live sound, featuring the bass-lines of Matlock, which were not reproduced when guitarist Steve Jones took over bass duties for the recording of Bollocks. Robbie Basho - Venus in Cancer CD (Tompkins Square) ................................................................... After five albums for the Takoma label in the '60s, Basho had cemented his reputation alongside John Fahey and Leo Kottke as one of the most brilliant guitarists of his generation. His wide range of musical influences from around the globe set him apart from other blues-based players, incorporating Arabic, Himalayan and Indian themes; Japanese and Chinese scales, and classical and European folk music. All are on magnificent display on this sprawling, spiritually-charged album. Released on CD for the very first time, the album has been remastered from the original tapes from 1969. The package includes original album artwork and new appreciations from Windham Hill label founder Will Ackerman, Basho college friend and fellow Takoma recording artists Max Ochs, German guitarist Steffen Basho-Junghans, and Pete Townshend of The Who. Twenty years since his death in 1986, Basho's legend continues to grow, having strongly influenced a new generation of guitarists including Jack Rose, Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance) and James Blackshaw, among many others. Check out our upcoming performances: Thursday, August 17th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ................................................................... A night of Experimental Electronic Sound Duos with: HZL (Philadelphia) xeromeM (Bton) Tim Albro and Jesse Kudler are electronic improvisers from Philadelphia. One uses table-top guitar, synthesizer, contact mic, various objects and devices, and sundry electronics. The other uses a rig that incorporates radio and an archtop guitar prepared with surface-mounted speakers inside its body. Jesse attended Wesleyan University, where he studied music with Ron Kuivila, Alvin Lucier, and a little bit with Anthony Braxton, among others. He eventually became active as an organizer and performer in improvised, experimental, and electronic music, forming a regular duo with fellow student Jonathan Zorn and leading the large electronic improvising ensemble Phil Collins. Their live performances have focused on subtle room-filling drones and textures, with speakers arrayed around the audience, evoking installation art as much as musicians on a stage. xeromeM is an improvised electronic music duo with Rob Dietz (DiZi) and Jeremy Kennedy (Puppy vs Dyslexia / DJ Sony Playstation) on samplers and processors. They start with nothing and end up who-knows-where. ... a special Landlocked Music sponsored show ...
