Holy Guacamole! Today sees the release of one of the longest lists of quality new titles in quite some time. From indie to hip-hop to rawk to pop to singer-songwriter and beyond. There is something for everyone! This might be the day that you look back at with your grandkids and recollect that indeed, you walked into Landlocked Music with all of your wide variety of friends and that each and every one of you found something in the New Arrivals bin that grabbed your interest and sustained you until the following weeks releases. Buckle up kids, its a loooong, beautiful and alphabetical boat ride: Select New Releases for 08/22/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Eric Bachmann - To The Races CD/LP (Saddle Creek) ................................................................... Former Archers of Loaf and Crooked Fingers frontman Eric Bachmann's first Saddle Creek release is an unadorned and unapologetically forthright collection of songs. Whereas Bachmann's Crooked Fingers' last effort, Dignity And Shame was his most poppy and immediately accessible album, this one is his most sparse and reflective. Warm vocals and deceptively simple arrangements keep the songs' quiet elegance ardent and complete, only occasionally augmented by Miranda Brown's angelic harmonies or Tom Hagerman's (Devotchka) haunting violin. The record tells stories of self-imposed or unintentional isolation and the common search for, or escape from, some kind of sanctuary. Broadcast - Future Crayon CD (Warp) ................................................................... Space-age pop collagists Broadcast formed in England in 1995 and immediately won favorable comparisons to Stereolab for their sample-heavy, analog, synth-driven sound. Behind the opium-soaked beauty of Trish Keenan's voice, the band swirls guitars, live and programmed drums, and keys together to produce a stellar sound over the course of four full length albums. This is a career-spanning collection of rarities, b-sides, and compilation appearances. Tracks from the Pendulum EP, Extended Play release, We Are Reasonable People, ATP 01, Echo's Answer and Come On Let's Go. Early Day Miners - Offshore CD/LP (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... Mentored by Daniel Lanois and based here in Bloomington, Dan Burton has been putting his project-oriented stamp on a variety of records the last decade and it has all coalesced into this career-defining work. Offshore is one continuous piece, made up of six distinct songs. It's equally beautiful and noisy, composed though loose, akin to the late '80s/early '90s 4AD-laden world of shoegaze wash-rock like Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, Mark Hollis (Talk Talk), their predecessor Peter Gabriel, or modern day saint William Basinski. Breathtaking. Paul Flaherty - Whirl of Nothingness CD (Family Vineyard) ................................................................... Saxophonist Paul Flaherty is New England's purveyor of the ecstatic jazz pulse. Even before his 1978 debut Flaherty remained unshakable in the pursuit of soul healing and demon dashing through freedom music. Whirl of Nothingness, Flaherty's 2nd solo album, is eight pieces of alto and soprano saxophone steeped in the theme of loss channeled through blasting improvisations that showcase his fabulous wailing and inferno of sound to stark bluesy melodies. Even without drum buddies Chris Corsano or Randall Colbourne, Flaherty's horn shudders and roars in gargantuan ways. In the slim cannon of solo horn records (alongside Anthony Braxton, Coleman Hawkins, Peter Brotzmann, Arthur Doyle), Whirl of Nothingness stands triumphantly strong and wholly distinct as a shifting sphere of sound poetry and spiritual tongue. J Dilla - The Shining (BBE) ................................................................... Frequently and rightly placed in the same context as DJ Premier, Pete Rock, and Kanye West, Jay Dee built and sustained a high standing as a producer's producer while maintaining a low profile. Months before he passed away, J Dilla asked fellow Detroiter and longtime associate Karriem Riggins to help him complete The Shining. A slightly more in-depth synthesis of studio creations and live instrumentation when compared to the productions that have trickled out during 05 and 06, the album is drenched in soul - save for a couple space-age basslines and other fleeting forms of alien synthetics - and features an impressive raft of Dilla's favorite MCs and singers, big names and relative unknowns alike. Featuring Madlib, Common, D'Angelo and more. Kelis - Kelis Was Here (Jive) ................................................................... Her Milkshake brought all the boys to the yard, and now we will follow her to her 4th album, Kelis Was Here. She will attempt further hip-hop/soul stardom with the new single, "Bossy" featuring Too $hort, which is sure to be one of this summer's hottest female anthems. Her second single will be Blindfold Me which features her husband, rapper Nas. The album also features Cee-Lo, Will.I.Am, and much more. Lambchop - Damaged CD/LP (Merge) ................................................................... Their 10th full-length is yet another stunning collection of songs written by Kurt Wagner and brought to life by up to 17 band members and collaborators. Eschewing the overt country influences of early Lambchop records and the R&B and soul influences of mid-period albums for a hushed austerity that is uniquely southern yet oddly universal, Damaged continues in the quiet and haunting tradition pioneered on the past three Lambchop albums. Exquisite. Jason Molina - Let me Go, Let Me Go, Let Me Go LP (w/ CD) (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... The enigmatic Songs:Ohia / Magnolia Electric Co frontman is back to simple times before the release of his forthcoming MEC album. "I wanted badly to revisit the type of songs I did on my more experimental albums The Pyramid, The Ghost, and Protection Spells. I put this project together in the last days before I began what was a long and harrowing move back to Chicago. All of this is an attempt to put a serious price on lyrics that are honest not witty, shy but not weak, weary if they are and sad without apology, depression without a fight and depression with a fight." - JM Mountain Goats - Get Lonely CD/LP (4AD) ................................................................... While The Sunset Tree chronicled the fraught, violent relationship between John Darnielle and his stepfather and derived its power from an unblinking exorcism of personal demons, Get Lonely is the haunted aftermath. It's a reflective, intimate record. The mood is one of bittersweet resignation rather than cathartic release. It's a quiet triumph, murmuring with a modest but entirely surefooted confidence. An uncannily coherent and subtly redemptive record which will come to be seen as Mountain Goats' most resonant, assured, and magical collection of songs so far. The songs are fleshed out with deft sensitivity by long-standing collaborators Peter Hughes and Franklin Bruno, and there are luminous contributions from cellist Erik Friedlander and drummer Corey Fogel. My Brightest Diamond - Bring Me The Workhorse CD (Asthmatic Kitty) ................................................................... Shara Worden is a trained opera singer turned pop songwriter whose debut gathers all the essential elements of classical and pop to create an album that begins to break down the barriers of both worlds. These songs are simultaneously gentle and urgent, evoking moments of tremendous joy and sorrow with the magnitude of Italian opera and the modesty of a Japanese haiku. Worden can channel the vocal theatrics of Kate Bush, the soulful seductiveness of Nina Simone, and the gothic pop of Portishead, sometimes in one song. Her songwriting blurs the lines between rock show and recital, and while her vocal lines reach for Puccini, her guitar style is akin to Blonde Redhead or PJ Harvey. Nouvelle Vague - Bande A Part CD (Lauka Bop) ................................................................... In 2005, the French duo's eponymous debut introduced their singular take on post-punk nuggets by the likes of Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Tuxedo Moon, and The Undertones, recasting them as svelte, sophisticated bossa nova-inflected chansons. This follow-up is a beguiling, retro-futurist odyssey, containing covers of Echo And The Bunnymen, The Buzzcocks, Lords Of The New Church, Billy Idol, U2, Blondie, New Order, The Cramps, Bauhaus, The Smiths, and more. Outkast - Idlewild OST CD (La Face) ................................................................... For over a decade, the ATL-based super duo Outkast has been consistently pushing hip-hop's envelope by expanding its musical boundaries with every album they release. Their unique blend of jazz, blues, soul, and rock, laced with their southern sensibilities has constantly set the world on its ear. And none of their albums have ever sounded alike. The HBO Film's original motion picture musical entitled Idelwild stars Outkast's Andre Benjamin and Antwan Patton. It also, of course, features all new songs by Outkast, which can be found on this. Pajo - 1968 CD (Drag City) ................................................................... Back in those early 90s there was a magical band from the midwest who influenced a bunch of other bands called Slint. After their demise, one man, David Pajo attacked a string of projects - playing with Stereolab, The For Carnation, Tortoise, Royal Trux, Palace, King Kong and many others. Then he formed a band called Aerial M. But then he changed it to Papa M. Then he decided to start singing. Then he took a bit of a sabbatical to join Billy Corgan's ill-fated Zwan. Coming back from that two-year mini-debacle, now he's PAJO. Now the one-time instrumental songwriter is singing on all his songs, and singing melodically, with songs about love and death and different kinds of friendships. Ratatat - Classics CD/LP (XL) ................................................................... "Ratatat lay squealing metal harmonies over choppy Neptunes-style dance thumps, then break into pastoral waves of keyboard tone, riding dub tempos and hip-hop struts. They're crotch-pumping arena pimps and introverted minimalists..." - Blender. Classics remains resolutely instrumental, but the band has introduced a wealth of new sounds, from acoustic and slide guitar to sleigh bells and cello. Their vastly improved production and writing makes this record a refinement of their art. the Thermals - The Body, The Blood, The Machine CD/LP (Sub Pop) ................................................................... With a wider, brighter, and wilder sound than anything they've done in the past, this record adds walls of guitars, organs, and even a few "ballads" (a.k.a. slightly pretty songs) to the mix, while still retaining the gritty post-pop-punk sound for which they're globally famous. Recorded in the band's hometown of Portland, OR by Fugazi's Brendan Canty. Tortoise - A Lazarus Taxon 3CD+DVD (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... This set's title comes from the paleontological term for a reappearing species. And after 12 years of expanding the definition of rock music, Tortoise releases a highly anticipated box set, including the long out of print 1995 album "Rhythms, Resolutions & Clusters", rare singles from import releases and tour EPs, compilation tracks, and previously unreleased material such as remixes by band members and other artists, including Jim O'Rourke, Brad Wood, Rick Brown, Steve Albini, and Mike Watt. The DVD contains two hours of footage, several extended live performances, videos and short films. A 20-page booklet with archival photos and liner notes about each track's origins at a fantastic price make this a must buy. M. Ward - Post-War CD/LP (Merge) ................................................................... The fifth M. Ward album and his most absorbing yet. Its songs unravel their world-wearied tales of life, love, and human kindness with an innate and special grace, helped in part by the very talented friends who join him on this record, such as Neko Case and Mike Mogis, as well as old "Monsters Of Folk" touring buddy Jim James (My Morning Jacket). Ward is at a loss to explain the origin of his singing voice, a three-pack-a-day rasp that sounds like it should come from a 75-year-old Mississippi Delta bluesman. It's as much a non-sequitur as the Southern-fried vocal delivery used 40 years ago by CCR's John Fogerty. VA - Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs, and Chanteys 2CD (Anti) ................................................................... While working on the Pirates Of The Carribean films, Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski became fascinated with the lore and fable of the pirates and sailors who ran the high seas. Enter legendary producer Hal Wilner, who brings his knack for matching maverick musicians with extraordinary material. Artists on this double disc set include Richard Thompson, Nick Cave, Loudon Wainwright, Bryan Ferry, Lucinda Williams, Akron/Family, Van Dyke Parks, Jolie Holland, Jarvis Cocker, Lou Reed, and many more. Rogue's Gallery offers a look at the hardships, the horrors, the lusts and lurid depths, and the crystal beauty that led men to the sea in ships for hundreds of years. BIAS Autumn Festival featuring Tatsuya Nakatani (Japan) Originally from Kobe and Osaka, Japan, internationally renowned percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani has toured extensively throughout the world, having performed in approximately 80 cities and 10 countries. Utilizing drumset, gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects, sticks and bows, he creates collages of sound, which combine the sense of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music with the extended techniques of New Music, yet with great energy and intensity. Although his music defies category or genre, it can be viewed as a cross-cultural mixture of improvised music, experimental music, jazz, free jazz, and rock. In addition to live solo and ensemble performances, he has provided sound design for films and television projects. The latest of these was the performance of an improvised sound score for silent movie- "The Water Magician" (1933, directed by Kenji Mizoguchi), which was part of exhibition of Hiroshi Sugimoto Photographs at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. He is the recent recipient of The Bronx Arts Council Individual Artist grant. In addition to his work as a percussionist, Nakatani heads an independent record label and recording studio.
