Boo-hoo. The party is over. School is back in session. And whilst you might not be able to find parking on Kirkwood anymore, we haven't yet had a problem on our little stretch. We are actually quite stoked to welcome all the new faces to Bloomington and show off our smalltown charm. Old-timers, please have patience with the newcomers, we were all once there. Newbies, don't be shy, feel free to ask us about things to do and places to be around town. All hippie-ness aside, one thing we can all come together on is great new music, like these: Select New Releases for 08/29/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Bob Dylan - Modern Times CD/LP (Sony) ................................................................... Dylan's first new album in 5 years featuring 10 new songs. Special limited edition deluxe package includes a book style package, expanded booklet with never-before-seen photographs and a bonus DVD including videos. At a time when the majority of those his age are drifting into retirement, 65yo Dylan has put the capper on a 3-record run that ranks with the best in his storied, 44-album career. Like Time Out of Mind and Love and Theft before it, Modern Times is a rootsy, blues-soaked pool of the purest form of Americana- skipping the progressive bells or whistles for an understated backing by his touring band. Dylan's voice, which cracks, rasps and moans from the pop singer's pulpit, hasn't been this rich and emotive since 1976's Desire. And while his lyrics prolong his steadfast allusions to a higher power and his own immortality, they are not without the Dylan mirth. Old Crow Medicine Show - Big Iron World CD (Nettwerk) ................................................................... As the images of Hank Williams, Bob Dylan and Sun-era Elvis floating in the background might indicate, this Nashville band is strictly old school, singing about unemployed riverboat workers, covering Woody Guthrie and plucking banjos like there was no tomorrow. Produced by David Rawlings, Big Iron World boasts the expected barnstormers and late-night meditations alongside a handful of folkie sing-a-longs and a thoroughly unexpected reference to Karl Rove. And where else are you going to hear songstress Gillian Welch banging away on the drums? The Roots - Game Theory CD (Def Jam) ................................................................... Game Theory is as intensely a "Roots album" as anything they've put out, the rightful sequel to their brilliant, creative Phrenology. Game Theory is a dark and brooding affair, not just in Black Thought's foreboding lyricism but also in its musical textures. There's a layer of melancholia running beneath nearly every song, whether in the heavy thump of "In the Music" or the frenetic verve of "Here I Come." A remarkable achievement in album-making, every song builds into the next one, and those willing to experience Game Theory as a suite of 13 songs will be richly rewarded by how precisely the whole puzzle fits together. The Tyde - Three's Co. CD (Rough Trade) ................................................................... The Tyde are a band that could exist nowhere but California, somehow managing to capture the South Orange County longboarding culture of their suburban Golden State musical forebears - The Wilson brothers and Jan & Dean - with the UK Creation Records sound of the early 90s. The Tyde answer the questions: What if Galaxie 500 had been beach bums? What if the shoegazers had all been staring at their Vans? The Tyde's third album finds Darren Rademaker once again taking his unique blend of surf-influenced pop-rock by way of late '70s/early '80s Brit rockers Felt, rolling it up and taking a deep drag, then passing around the perfect musical prescription for the re-emergence of California cool. William Elliott Whitmore - Song of the Blackbird CD/LP (Southern) ................................................................... The organic musical progression of this young, rural Iowan continues to impress. Though he has yet to reach 30, his gravelly voice; themes of mortality, loss, and redemption; and spare accompaniment on banjo and guitar evoke an era before electricity and indoor plumbing. Yet there's a melodic warmth and spirit of renewal here that was nowhere to be heard on Whitmore's two previous albums. As the song cycle proceeds from drought to flood, the musical narrator even proclaims himself a "happy feller" at one point, though happiness remains barely a glimmer throughout much of his music. In the early 90s, Shawn met Tom and Christina Carter (Charalambides)— now considered early pioneers of the present avant-folk movement. Recorded mostly at night, Catfish is acoustic-based and also includes autoharp, Roland keyboard, Indian goat bell, Indonesian gongs, bowed electric bass, African kalimba, and shakuhachi flute. Cited influences at the time include American Indian lore, music from the Middle East and India, Phil Yost, Robbie Basho, and Malachi Favors. This CD version features an additional 20 minutes of material to the LP. Method Man - 4:21 The Day After CD (Def Jam) ................................................................... Wu-Tang Clan Star Method Man's eagerly anticipated fourth solo effort. Produced by The Rza, Erick Sermon and Scott Storch amongst others, and featuring guest appearances from the likes of Ol' Dirty Bastard, Raekwon, The Rza and Redman, '4.21...The Day After' provides another welcome dose of hard-hitting lyrics and heavy beats. ...................................................................
