Dan Rather said that about spinach, and we don't know what he has against the stuff but, we love it. So hopefully this whole e-coli nonsense will blow over soon so we can go back to popeye land and lose the lettuce! In the meantime, these fine new releases might also supply your ears with a healthy dose of vitamins A and C as well as iron, calcium and fiber! Enjoy: Select New Releases for 09/19/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Bonnie Prince Billy - the Letting Go CD/LP (Drag City) ................................................................... Having long recorded as Palace Music or Palace, the enigmatic, elusive Will Oldham aka Bonnie Prince Billy continues to confound musical expectations. His latest may well be his loveliest, a series of meditations and tone poems on love and mortality, with the autumnal strains of a chamber quartet and the vocal counterpoint of Dawn McCarthy (Faun Fables) supporting Billy's tremulous expression of his surreal, stream-of-consciousness lyricism. It all fits together in a manner that defies categorization and dares the listener to resist its aural seduction. MC Chris - Dungeon Master of Ceremonies CD (Jet Pack) ................................................................... If you are a devotee of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim line-up you have probably seen the name MC Chris pop up in the credits of Sealab 2021, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Brak Show, and Space Ghost. You might know him better as the voice of Hesh from Sealab or MC Pee Pants (or his various incarnations). Familiarise yourself w/ his new songs before his performance around the corner at Rhino's on October 21st. Darkel - Darkel CD/LP (Astralwerks) ................................................................... Following the tremendous commercial and critical acclaim of Air's 2004 album Talkie Walkie, instrumentalist JB Dunckel took some time away from the group setting and started writing purely for himself as an experiment. Recorded entirely at his own studio, these ten songs that make up his first solo shine through with the sparkingly rich musicality that JB has demonstrated consistently throughout his 10-year tenur with Air. These songs are at once sentimental, humorous and philosophical ruminations on love, family, and the environment, sung with the same sweetly disarming grace you've come to love. Dead Moon - Unknown Passage: The Dead Moon Story DVD (Magic Umbrella) ................................................................... Utterly unpretentious, organically wayward, homespun, and purposeful without being overly sentimental, this film fits its subject perfectly. Documenting the trajectory of the Portland trio Dead Moon (including the prior solo and garage-rock careers of Fred Cole), Passage is the ultimate punk-rock feel-good flick; there isn't a band that better embodies the sounds and ideals of its genre while simultaneously inspiring an authentic sense of friendship, family, and truth. Limited quantities available! 175 minutes. Ensemble - Ensemble CD (Fat Cat) ................................................................... Originally from Toulouse, France, but now resident in Montreal, Ensemble was created as a platform to explore the meeting point between melodic noise and experimental pop. Olivier develop a reputation for the stunning quality of his programming and sound-work, and led to a number of writing collaborations with Bjork, along with several remixes of her work. Drawing upon artists whose work he admired, the album features collaborations from singers Chan Marshall, Lou Barlow, Mileece, and Camille Claverie; with drummer Adam Pierce; and orchestral arrangements by Johannes Malfatti, performed by the Babelsberg Film Orchestra in Germany. Andre Ethier - Secondathallam CD (Paperbag) ................................................................... You think Andre Ethier is just the howling leader of that gang of rowdy rock-n-rollers who travel under the Deadly Snakes flag? Well, you've got another thing coming, and it arrives in the form of Ethier's new solo album, secondathallam. The songs are arranged in the style of the great, '70s-style, confessional singer-songwriter albums. They're all wrapped in warm tones, with Sandes piano at the fore and Ethier's singing naked and honest. Coloured by horns and double bass, it sounds like an acoustic Sunday afternoon jam session between players who've been around long enough to learn that there's more to love than flowers and sweet nothings. Hidden Cameras - Awoo CD (Arts & Crafts) ................................................................... Toronto's Hidden Cameras are a mix of queer politics, explicit sexuality, afro-pop guitarland joyful, anthemic hymns bordering on the religous. Their elaborate live performances - which have included go-go dancers, strippers, and musicians, blind-folded audiences, as well as videos and projected lyrics - have won the group a devoted following in Canada and abroad. Their sound has been described as an ecstatic release of classic pop. I'm From Barcelona - Let Me Introduce You to My Friends CD/LP (EMI import) ................................................................... You kept requesting it, so we brought it in! Debut album from this 29 member Swedish band (who obviously aren't from Barcelona!) led by principal songwriter/singer Emanuel Lundgren. Grand Indie Pop with multi-part harmonies, strings, horns, banjo, accordion and kazoos. Features the hit single 'We're From Barcelona' plus 'Chicken Pox' and 'Rec & Play'. Pere Ubu - Why I Hate Women CD (Smog Veil) ................................................................... Pere Ubu have really come out fighting with Why I Hate Women, racing towards all horizons at full tilt, pushing the experimental envelope further than ever, but also tightening up their trademark avant-punk attack. The rhythm section is tauter and leaner than ever before. Robert Wheeler's bravura performance on vintage electronics has him coming over as rural Ohio's answer to Sun Ra, splattering analogue synth and theremin all over the music with wild, visionary abandon. Guitar veers between wayward sonic expressionism and disciplined garage thrust. At the eye of the storm is singer David Thomas. His vocal approach shows a startling new melodicism, a plaintive purity of expression that cuts through his familiar repertoire of radical voicings and techniques. Red Sparowes - Every Red Heart Shines Toward The Red Sun CD (Neurot) ................................................................... Red Sparowes is epic without bombast, heavy without a single barre-chord riff and eviscerating without any clearly audible vocals. The chiming, spindly layers of effect-laden guitars and the swinging, entrancing drums on its Neurot Recordings debut At the Soundless Dawn create textures reminiscent of Goblin, Tones on Tail, Godspeed You Black Emperor and early Sonic Youth. Its attack is syrupy and serpentine; subtle but frighteningly deliberate. DJ Shadow - The Outsider CD (Universal) ................................................................... Shadow's unparalleled musical contributions have and continue to play a crucial role in the development and mastering of genre blending music. His list of collaborations include works with Dr Octagon, UNKLE, Thom Yorke, Cut Chemist and many more. Working with several different vocalists, in styles spanning everything from hyphy, to folk, from aggressive hardcore rock to left-field alternative dance music, the album is an almost schizophrenic collection from an artist to whom loving music and making music are just two sides of the same coin. His power to conjure and affect an emotion by collaging samples, voices and fragments of long-forgotten recorded dialogue remains undimmed. Whitest Boy Alive - Dreams CD (Asound) ................................................................... You may know Erlend Oye from Kings of Convenience. The Berlin-based Norwegian singer has been a huge figure in the electronic music scene for years, but with Whitest Boy Alive, his new project with German DJ Marcin Oez, Erlend's gone the opposite route, creating stripped down rock music without layering, editing or effects. The simple combination of drums, bass, guitar and Erlend's breezy, yet intimate voice create a sound that is both funky and melancholy. A truly original pop band making the simplest sounding dance songs in the most organic way. Also Released On This Day: ................................................................... Bloomington Improvising Artist Series Mini-Fest featuring Tatsuya Nakatani - http://www.hhproduction.org/TATSUYA_NAKATANI_WORKS.html also appearing: Guth-tet, DMC-trio, Art Deco Quartet, Rob Dietz, Dan Wick, Drekka, Too Many Wolfs, Saxophone Cartel, Ian Yeager Originally from Kobe and Osaka, Japan, internationally renowned percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani has toured extensively throughout the world, having performed in approximately 80 cities and 10 countries. Utilizing drumset, gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects, sticks and bows, he creates collages of sound, which combine the sense of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music with the extended techniques of New Music, yet with great energy and intensity. Although his music defies category or genre, it can be viewed as a cross-cultural mixture of improvised music, experimental music, jazz, free jazz, and rock. He is the recent recipient of The Bronx Arts Council Individual Artist grant. MOVIE: http://www.hhproduction.org/Movies/TN%20solo(webstream).mov Monday, September 25th @ 7pm @ Landlocked Music - FREE! ................................................................... Sam Lowry - http://www.exilesuite.com/ Andy Storms - http://www.andrewstorms.com/ Sam Lowry spins tales of broken relationships and the fool's hope that moves us all from one disaster scene to the next, like some mid-west Raymond Carver with a guitar. With a deflated, Leonard Cohen-like grumble and an unexpected musical backdrop that blends together traditional acoustic instruments like banjo, guitar and fiddle with warm yet tricky drum loops and vintage-sounding keyboards, Lowry has concocted an honest, dark and surprisingly melodic exercise in aural subtlety that works to maximum effect. His textural, slanted and poetic take on Roots music gives new meaning to the phrase "American Gothic." This night sees the release of his 4th CD, 'Songs of My Enemy'. Thursday, October 5th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 donation$ ................................................................... Matt Weston - http://www.mattweston.com/ Mike Dixon Matt Weston plays percussion and electronics, and has performed throughout the US and in Europe. His work has earned critical praise from such publications as the Wire, the Village Voice, Signal To Noise, Cadence, All About Jazz, Grooves, and Bananafish. He has studied and/or collaborated with Arthur Brooks, Bill Dixon, Milford Graves, Kevin Drumm, William Parker, Jack Wright and others. His solo album Vacuums has garnered international acclaim, as have his recordings with Barn Owl and with Tizzy. He is a sound explorer on an apparent endless quest for purity. Swearing at Motorists - http://www.swearingatmotorists.com/ Ground-Ups - http://www.fmsmprc.com/ground.html Dubbed the 2-Man Who by many a rock critic, Swearing at Motorists is an everyman record for the inner superman in all of us. File next to Thin Lizzy, Replacements and Spoon. With their first album since 2002's critically acclaimed This Flag Signals Goodbye, Swearing at Motorists return with a career-defining album. Last Night Becomes This Morning is frontman Dave Doughman's indie version of "Running On Empty". It was recorded on the road, between and while on tour in various locations - at soundchecks, in hotel rooms, rehearsal halls and on the bus. It is an album about 2 artists in love and how their craft keeps them apart. LNBTM is a record of transition - and the confusion, discovery and understanding with which it comes. Where "Running On Empty" told of the battle to cope with fame & fortune, LNBTM chronicles the struggle to live life on the road in spite of lack of fame or fortune. In place of the sold out arenas, its live sound comes in busking in an empty Berlin subway station. In the winter of 1999 Ground-Ups was birthed into the cold but forgiving Bloomington music scene. The two drummers (Jeremy Kennedy & Shane Edge) along with original trumpet/cornet player (Chris Clavin) brought hardcore fake jazz, noise and senseless lyrical content out of their basement and into the basements of others. We are proud to present an artifact of that era of Ground-Ups in the "OH! it bites me" cassette. Since then it has been this group's mission to confuse and torment anyone in its path. Success still shines bright 5 years later as the Ground-Ups see a change in line up with Eric Weddle (Unstable Ensemble, John Wilkes Booze) taking over the horned responsibility with saxophone and electric trumpet. It still all boils down to fun songs and improvised chopping at an always fast and furious intensity.  MP3: http://www.scjag.com/mp3/sc/northernline.mp3 More information about these shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://myspace.com/landlockedbton and http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------ We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
