Well if there was any doubt that we are officially in autumn, that idea has been squashed now. Woke up this morning with the cold weather aches and pain in the bones. Or maybe that was from head-banging a bit too hard last night at Landlocked when Sam Lowry brought the thunder AND lightning to the LL stage for his CD release show and rocked us like a hurricane. Delightful. In other news, this weekend is 2nd Story Nightclub's 25th Anniversary, with 4 nights chock full of entertainment- details at http://www.secondstorynightclub.com/ and now here are your new titles and more: Select New Releases for 09/26/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Adem - Love and Other Planets CD (Domino) ................................................................... Fridge sure was a hell of a band, recording a handful of unheralded and excellent records and later birthing the careers of Kieran Hebdan AKA Four Tet and TKTK AKA Adem. The sophomore release by Adem, Love and Other Planets further melts textures from the folk and electronic worlds together, as if Sufjan had decided to collaborate with Nobukazu Takemura. It's so gorgeous, it's tough to imagine why Adem is, if not a household name, then at least on the lips of one person on every block. Each song on this record is plaintive, intricate, heartfelt and smart. Bobby Bare Jr - Longest Meow CD (Bloodshot) ................................................................... From his first release on Bloodshot, Bobby has testified as one of the most innovate songwriters and performers, content on warping the classic Nashville sound and embracing the eccentric. Bare has been known to pair up with some of the most unlikely suspects to contribute to his sound, including everyone from Shel Silverstein to Duane Dennison of Jesus Lizard to Andrew Bird. Disarmingly charming, foolishly romantic and unapologetically thunderous when needed, The Longest Meow lays bare Bobby's willingness to do anything to get the girl, even if we all know it'll somehow end badly. From dynamic atmospherics and psychedelic melancholy to pulsing T. Rex glam boogie and down and dirty southern rock, Bobby fearlessly wears his heart on his stained and sweaty shirtsleeve. Four Tet - Remixes 2CD (Domino) ................................................................... Kieran Hebden is one of those artists whose receptive audience is without classification. That extends into the world of musical colleagues. Four Tet has commandeered fans and collaborators as wide reaching as experimental rock bands (Radiohead), massive pop acts (Coldplay), underground hip-hop producers (the late J Dilla), post-punk influenced upstarts (Bloc Party), electronic mavericks (Aphex Twin), folk chanteuses (Beth Orton and Juana Molina), and jazz legends (with Kieran's ongoing collaboration with drummer Steve Reid). Disc 1 contains Hebden's remixes of others, disc 2 contains others' remixes of Four Tet. Emily Haines - Knives Don't Have Your Back CD (Last Gang) ................................................................... Emily Haines is an artist that defies labeling. Frontwoman for Metric, she is proud to release her debut solo album, Knives Don't Have Your Back, this fall on Last Gang Records. The album was written and recorded over the past four years in Los Angeles, Montreal, Toronto, and New York and is a distinct contrast from Metric's bold, danceable sound. Knives is an intimate and subtle collection of mellow, piano-driven tunes complimented by soft string and horn arrangements. The Lemonheads - Lemonheads CD (Vagrant) ................................................................... Ten years between albums is a long time for a musician to sustain momentum, but when you're Evan Dando, it's a matter of doing again what you do best: Stick close to what got you here. Of course, this self-titled record comes nowhere near the early Lemonheads' mayhem of Creator or Lick, but it does bookend nicely with the 1993 delight Come on Feel the Lemonheads. Backed by drummer Bill Stevenson and bassist Karl Alvarez, both ex of the Descendents and All, the album at times has a 110 mph feel, complemented by Dando's trademark rock-candy prose. While this very well could be labeled a solo record for Dando, there's nothing wrong with the moniker that reminds us that the Lemonheads live on. Lucero - Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers CD (Liberty & Lament) ................................................................... Torn and frayed, the voice of Lucero singer Ben Nichols epitomizes a band that spends half it's time on the highway driving to the next gig. But judging by the fun the Memphis 4-piece appears to be having on its 5th album, that road may go on forever. Produced by David Lowry (Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker), the record meshes elements of English blues, Southern swamp rock and Bowery Street punk rock- all led by the crashing, thrashing twin guitars of Nichols and the venerable Brian Venable. My Morning Jacket - Okonokos: Double Live Album CD (ATO) ................................................................... Following the release of their 4th critically acclaimed full-length album, Z, MMJ readies to deliver what is surely to become their quintessential body of work - 2 discs and a concert film that contains their most dynamic, otherworldly compositions to date, presented in their finest form. Live. Okonokos is a creative concept conceived by Jim James, and it is as much a question as it is an answer. It is an enigma wrapped around a riddle. Okonokos is whatever you want it to be. Belying the myth that live albums tend to highlight the disparity between it and its studio counterpart, Okonokos: Double Live Album delves into the realm of raw, rich, elevated sound, while proudly staying true to its roots. Sam Lowry - Songs of My Enemy CD (Higher Step) ................................................................... Over the course of 7 years and 3 critically acclaimed albums, Sam Lowry has slowly been perfecting his unique brand of dark Americana, sharpening the cut of his voice and deepening the impact of his words. Songs documents the end of his 8 year marriage, his year of whiskey driven self-therapy, his eventual reconciliation with himself, and as he puts it, his need to "get on with it". Musically, the album occupies the kind of adventurous gothic American territory traveled by Smog and Sparklehorse. Sparklehorse - Dreamt for Light Years... CD (Astralwerks) ................................................................... The long-awaited and much-anticipated new album from Mark Linkous, Dreamt For Light Years In The Belly Of A Mountain, is rife with a fuzzed-out grace and dark enchantment, featuring musical contributions from Danger Mouse, Tom Waits, and Steven Drozd of The Flaming Lips. Continuing to mime his unique brand of haunted rural melancholy with gossamer electronic traces and a skewed pop sensibility, Dreamt For Light Years In The Belly Of A Mountain was recorded at Linkous' Static King Studios deep in the hills of North Carolina, with some recording done at Tar Box, produced David Fridman's upstate New York studio. Wolf Eyes - Human Animal CD/LP (Sub Pop) ................................................................... These songs are rotten with metal, reeds, consciousness-erasing islands of black doom, bass-heavy rippers, late night free terror jams, and pure mayhem. The new double-bass attack is showcased on Human Animal/Rusted Mange with scraping strings and a full terror-shriek workout. New directions are countered by Rationed Rot which revisits the eerie Throbbing Gristle-esque vocal deployment that dates from Wolf Eyes' Dread LP. The album also features the band's first cover, the No Fucker's anthem, Noise Not Music, which closed out a lot of shows on Wolf Eyes' recent European tour. Matt Weston - http://www.mattweston.com/ Jeremy Kennedy (solo drums) Mike Dixon (hoosier illusion) Matt Weston plays percussion and electronics, and has performed throughout the US and in Europe. His work has earned critical praise from such publications as the Wire, the Village Voice, Signal To Noise, Cadence, All About Jazz, Grooves, and Bananafish. He has studied and/or collaborated with Arthur Brooks, Bill Dixon, Milford Graves, Kevin Drumm, William Parker, Jack Wright and others. His solo album Vacuums has garnered international acclaim, as have his recordings with Barn Owl and with Tizzy. He is a sound explorer on an apparent endless quest for purity. Swearing at Motorists - http://www.swearingatmotorists.com/ Ground-Ups - http://www.fmsmprc.com/ground.html Dubbed the 2-Man Who by many a rock critic, Swearing at Motorists is an everyman record for the inner superman in all of us. File next to Thin Lizzy, Replacements and Spoon. With their first album since 2002's critically acclaimed This Flag Signals Goodbye, Swearing at Motorists return with a career-defining album. Last Night Becomes This Morning is frontman Dave Doughman's indie version of Running On Empty. It was recorded on the road, between and while on tour in various locations - at soundchecks, in hotel rooms, rehearsal halls and on the bus. It is an album about 2 artists in love and how their craft keeps them apart. LNBTM is a record of transition - and the confusion, discovery and understanding with which it comes. Where Running On Empty told of the battle to cope with fame & fortune, LNBTM chronicles the struggle to live life on the road in spite of lack of fame or fortune. In place of the sold out arenas, its live sound comes in busking in an empty Berlin subway station. In the winter of 1999 Ground-Ups was birthed into the cold but forgiving Bloomington music scene. The two drummers (Jeremy Kennedy & Shane Edge) along with original trumpet/cornet player (Chris Clavin) brought hardcore fake jazz, noise and senseless lyrical content out of their basement and into the basements of others. We are proud to present an artifact of that era of Ground-Ups in the "OH! it bites me" cassette. Since then it has been this group's mission to confuse and torment anyone in its path. Success still shines bright 5 years later as the Ground-Ups see a change in line up with Eric Weddle (Unstable Ensemble, John Wilkes Booze) taking over the horned responsibility with saxophone and electric trumpet. It still all boils down to fun songs and improvised chopping at an always fast and furious intensity.  MP3: http://www.scjag.com/mp3/sc/northernline.mp3 More information about these shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://myspace.com/landlockedbton and http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------ We are an exclusive Stanton dealer!
