Area Couple Arrested for Music Neglect Police arrested a man and a woman for neglecting to buy all the hot new music titles available from Landlocked Music at their home after their roommate called authorities, police said Monday. Sgt. Rick Larson said police arrested the two on 39 counts each of two charges: failing to provide kickarse tunes for chores and failing to provide proper mood music for house parties. In addition, authorities added one count of conspiracy to use their old boring CDs to make a "new" mix. Shame, shame, double shame! Don't let this happen to you. Surely you can find some lovely new tunes in this fine list: Select New Releases for 10/03/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Air - Late Night Tales (Thrive) ................................................................... Air aren't exactly strangers to mood enhancing music, so it's perhaps not surprising that they would eventually combine their talents to mix a selection of their favorite music. Dipping into by turns melancholic, ambient, soulful, mellow and downright moody classics, Air's selections make for timeless, lounge-loving, uplifing, and occasionally heart-wrenching stuff. Godin and Dunckel's LNT selections immediately propel you into a world as dry and as satisfying as a glass of Chateauneuf du Pap, in which time is not so much standing still as floating in space. Air time, you might call it in fact. Akron/Family - Meek Warrior (Young God) ................................................................... Since Akron/Family's 2005 debut, the band has played hundreds and hundreds of shows across the known world, recorded a split album with Angels of Light , cut a few home-brewed albums to sell on the road, and generally worked themselves to death - or at least into some new unrecognizable entity. And now this: a special, budget-priced album that shows them morphing yet again, into something comfortably unfamiliar, by turns wild, gentle, raging, hilarious, elated, meditative and sometimes simply beautiful. Beck - The Information (Interscope) ................................................................... Beck might be the single most inventive and eclectic figure to emerge from the 90s alternative revolution. In an era obsessed with junk culture, he seamlessly blends pop, folk, hiphop, indie and electronic with the end result being an authentically uncategorizeable musical style that nevertheless has sold millions of records and scored multiple Grammys. Consisting of 15 songs and a DVD featuring homemade videos for each of the 15 songs shot in-studio during the actual sessions. Each copy will come in a blank package with one of four collectible sticker sheets specially designed by European and American artists and representative of the unique Beck aesthetic. The stickers will give every Beck fan the opportunity to participate in the creative process by designing his or her own one of a kind CD cover. Neko Case - Live from Austin DVD ................................................................... Armed with a lush and disarming voice that channels Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn while remaining undeniably individual, Neko Case brings the DIY approach of her punk past to bear on the country singer-songwriter tradition for straight-up twang steeped in a dreamy, noir-like atmosphere. The sultry chanteuse is captured live in this 2003 appearance on PBS's Austin City Limits, which has been expanded from its televised half-hour episode to include all 90 minutes of Case's performance, including signature songs like Twist the Knife, Deep Red Bells, and Furnace Room Lullaby. the Decemberists - The Crane Wife (Capitol) ................................................................... The Crane Wife is thematically based on a tragic Japanese folk tale, but band leader Colin Meloy promises a fair dose of rock 'n roll, rape, murder and violence as well. The set is the fivesome's 4th full-length and their first since moving over to a major label from Kill Rock Stars. Colin recruited Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla and Seattle mainstay Tucker Martine to man the decks. Describing the forthcoming set as their "weirdest yet". Elephant Micah - Embarrassment of Riches ................................................................... Elephant Micah will inevitably draw comparisons to other quiet male singer-songwriters (Red House Painters, Songs: Ohia, Mojave 3). And while he did start in that direction, with melancholy vocals and a blurry strummed guitar, EM mainman Joe O'Connell has over time begun to introduce samples in his bedroom four-track recordings to make them a little more unpredictable. He mixes things up again by tossing in banjo, electric slide, and a hint of twang, and still later, very simple strings accent his beautiful melodies. Charming and very limited edition. Robyn Hitchcock & the Venus 3 - Ole Tarantula (Yep Roc) ................................................................... In 30 years of recording with the Soft Boys and solo-wise, Hitchcock's enduring brand of madcap mayhem has raced between English punk, acoustic folk and sonically lush pop. But by teaming with pals Pete Buck (REM) and Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5), Hitchcock has made a return to garage rock not heard since 1989's Queen Elvis. More than capable musicians, Buck and McCaughey are long-time fans of the legendary British songwriter - whose droll lyrics and quirky melodies recall the late Syd Barrett - and they grasp the assignment with aplomb. The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America (Vagrant) ................................................................... Craig Finn loves books and bars. It's not just that he pinched the title of he Hold Steady's third album from the ultimate manual for boozehounds, Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" ("Boys and Girls in America have such a sad time together"), but that every leery line of every song is crammed with the wayward poetry and passion of someone who is more familiar with the bottom of a whiskey glass than the sun. Thanks to his raucous Brooklyn band, his music - louder than its predecessors this time, with a few more ballads - also happens to make a great soundtrack for an all-night bender where broken-hearts and broken bottles become one. PFM sez 9.4! the Kooks - Inside In/Inside Out (Astralwerks) ................................................................... Brighton's The Kooks are that rarest of pop entities: a scuzzy, fresh-faced group to fully restore your faith in the holy grail of English singer-songwriting stretching from Supergrass via (early) Blur to The Kinks and beyond. Their songs are crammed full of incidents on buses, bedroom mishaps and stinging teenage putdowns which will strike a chord with anyone who has ever found themselves fumbling for clues on the sofa. But they're also blessed with a cheerful irreverence most record companies would prefer was preserved in amber rather than rampaging across the nations venues. Sean Lennon - Friendly Fire (Capitol) ................................................................... Sean Lennon Ono is back and has produced a short film for each of his album's tracks, directed by Michele Civetta. The fantastical shorts, which together comprise a conceptual film about betrayal and the failure of love, feature appearances from Lennon and friends including Lindsay Lohan, Bijou Phillips, Asia Argento, Carrie Fisher, Devon Aoki, Jordana Brewster and others. Sounds like Sean has a thing for the ladies and uhh, Princess Leia. Les Georges Leningrad - Sangue Puro (Tomlab) ................................................................... Les Georges Leningrad is a love and hate story: the one of Bobo Boutin, Mingo L'Indien and Poney P. They met in 2000 during a fight in an Ontario street tavern. Bobo was at the time a bohemian singer, Mingo a contemporary music student at Univ of Montreal. Poney was writing songs in a big schoolbook while dreaming of sharing the stage with the greatests: Plume, Sun Ra and Felix Kubin. They just laid a bat's egg called Sangue Puro. Its the 3rd release of the Montreal trio. The sepulchral vibes and juvenile fury emanating from the guitar and keyboards will make you dance for yourself in front of the mirror. The ancient vessels explode and sink under the pressure of the killer rhythms. This latest effort, transported by the chant of a pipistrelle, is a bomb. Nina Nastasia - On Leaving (Fat Cat) ................................................................... Nina Nastasia's rare gift of a voice is an intimate, winged presence that is able to either freeze or melt your heart, that can powerfully soar and twist, or brush ultra-gently against you, suddenly summoning goose bumps. Mojo commented on its ability to "suck the air out of the room". Picking over themes of love, longing and loss, childhood, dreams and human dramas, her beautifully concise, hook-laden songwriting and the spare arrangements of her band have a certain gritty, rustic charm and intensity. Simultaneously tough and fragile, her songs crackle and smoulder with an intimate emotional honesty and a dark undertow. Pernice Brothers - Live a Little (Ashmont) ................................................................... During and after his days as the leader of Massachusetts band the Scud Mountain Boys, Joe Pernice has crafted his songs with a juxtaposed blueprint - hummable melodies and a lush pop tenor camouflaging lyrics that reek of anxiety and aggravation. Live a Little is the sixth recording by The Pernice Brothers, and it marks as much a return to form as it does a departure from what came before it. Lyrically, it's another masterpiece, and if distinctions must be drawn, perhaps this one's a bit more literary, where the last one Discover a Lovelier You was somewhat more cinematic. VA - Chrome Children (Stones Throw) ................................................................... Adult Swim and Stones Throw Records collaborate on an album with all-new tracks from Madvillain, J Dilla, Madlib, Quasimoto and more, with a DVD containing a live performance headlined by MF Doom. The concert was filmed at this year's SXSW by the Adult Swim crew. Featuring always amazing illustrated artwork. VA - Eccentric Soul: Mighty Mike Lenaburg (Numero Group) ................................................................... Our fifth stop on the Eccentric Soul train. A deep dig through the photo albums and tape libraries of Phoenix, Arizona's second family of soul. Released on a half dozen local and national labels throughout the 60s and 70s, Mike Lenaburg's productions represent that wrong side of the desert sound. A melange of Tejano psychedelia, flutey funk, horny soul, and fistfight doo-wop. 17 tracks long, 17 tracks incredible. His solo album Vacuums has garnered international acclaim, as have his recordings with Barn Owl and with Tizzy. He is a sound explorer on an apparent endless quest for purity. File next to Thin Lizzy, Replacements and Spoon. With their first album since 2002's critically acclaimed This Flag Signals Goodbye, Swearing at Motorists return with a career-defining album. Last Night Becomes This Morning is frontman Dave Doughman's indie version of Running On Empty. It was recorded on the road, between and while on tour in various locations - at soundchecks, in hotel rooms, rehearsal halls and on the bus. It is an album about 2 artists in love and how their craft keeps them apart. LNBTM is a record of transition - and the confusion, discovery and understanding with which it comes. Where Running On Empty told of the battle to cope with fame & fortune, LNBTM chronicles the struggle to live life on the road in spite of lack of fame or fortune. In place of the sold out arenas, its live sound comes in busking in an empty Berlin subway station. Ground-Ups are a Bloomington outfit that has gained and dropped a few members since their founding in 1999 and now weighs in duo-song-style with drummer/vocalist Jeremy Kennedy (Puppy vs, Dyslexia, Rapider Than Horsepower) and trumpet/sax/electronics ace Eric Weddle (Family Vineyard Records proprietor, John Wilkes Booze). Their sound is part Mingus lunacy matched with the shambles of Half Japanese; or maybe DNA as fronted by Rashaan Roland Kirk. Though with all the songs about food, touching, and bleeding and it is more like a Cibo Matto collaboration with Kaoru Abe's restless spirit. Keep holding yr breathe for their upcoming "Dippin' in da Musturd" 2xLP. Hudson Bell's new CD... It's just one hook lined pop song after another. It's one huge, soaring chorus after the next. It's genuinely emotional guitar solos place right smack dab where they are supposed to be. It's heartfelt crescendos that will pull your heart out through your chest while you let the waves of rock wash your ears clean of all the crappy music you have become accustomed to. It's the epitome of what a feel good rock record for the 2000's should sound like, and I can't stress to you how good it feels to just sit back and crank this one up. - Indie Work Shop Though the Kingdom's distinctive poetics and metaphysics alone would make Unitas a compelling debut, the skyscraping vocals and keen melodies transform these songs from bedroom-born 4-track charm into basement party anthems, brimming with teenage abandon. From the complex, intersecting vocal lines to soaring choruses, the EP displays a knowing mastery of Zombies-esque pop, as played by a generation that embraced Guided By Voices, not U2, as rock'n'roll saviors. Though Portland has sprouted many promising pop savants of late, The Kingdom's meticulous song-craft, coupled with their feverish, ebullient presentation, unite the visceral and the cerebral into an eminently enjoyable and erudite whole. Mentored by Daniel Lanois at his Teatro Studio in Los Angeles, Burton has been putting his project-oriented stamp on a variety of records for the last 10 years. Anywhere from early Songs: Ohia recordings to the pink noise and melodies of Windsor for the Derby, Burton's ideas and experiences with various bands in the studio have coalesced into this career-defining work, Offshore. Equally beautiful and noisy, composed though loose; akin to late 80s/early 90s 4AD-laden world of shoegaze wash-rock like Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, Mark Hollis, their predecessor Peter Gabriel or modern day saint William Basinski. Offshore has been a favorite for years. This is the director's cut. Pela lives in the not-so-fashionable waterfront neighborhood of Red Hook - the setting of Hubert Selby's Last Exit in Brooklyn. It's also home to many artists, dock workers, cranes, and shipping containers. They make desperate songs about addiction, isolation, hope, murder, sex, and Mexico. It's pretty dark stuff, but a lot of people find their songs really catchy. Someone once told them that their music sounds like what might happen if Modest Mouse hitched a ride on U2's tour bus. They've opened up for Rainer Maria, The National, The Decemberists, Earlimart, Sleater Kinney, and a recent string of dates out east with Early Day Miners. MP3s: http://www.scjag.com/mp3/sc/returnofthenative.mp3 Monday, November 6th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music ------------------------------------------------------------------ DRAKKAR SAUNA - http://www.drakkarsauna.com/ + TBA Drakkar Sauna, two dudes from Lawrence, Kansas, very much belong to that Fugs / Holy Model Rounders school of weirdness. Almost every one of their songs consists of acoustic gee-tar, rattling percussion, chord organ and some of the most gorgeous (in that weird Fugsy way) old-timey harmonies you'll ever hear. They sing about canoes and death and the Civil War and loose women - the sorts of things that matter to folks like you and me on a daily basis. Be careful, their heartbreaking melodies are liable to charm the pants right off ya, and never will you be stuck with such a shit-eating grin, pantsless, than you will at a Drakkar Sauna performance. MP3: http://www.marriagerecs.com/sound/omjohnsurratt.mp3 Wednesday, November 15th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ------------------------------------------------------------------ CASIOTONE FOR THE PAINFULLY ALONE - http://www.cftpa.org/ THE PAPERCUTS - http://www.panamericanrecording.com/ + TBA Casiotone for the Painfully Alone is the musical alias of film school drop-out Owen Ashworth. Over his first few albums Ashworth defined a hybrid strain of raw, emotional, and very homemade synth pop that was instantly recognizable as his own - claustrophobic 2-minute character studies shuddered with reverbed beats, blown-out chords, and simple but infectous melodies, all layered beneath Ashworth's sometimes funny but always heartbreaking lyrics. Now the sound of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone has grown to include pianos, organs, strings, flutes, drums, and pedal steel guitars in addition to Ashworth's signature electronics and drum machines. Papercuts is part of the emerging San Francisco indie-singer/songwriter scene that produced the critically acclaimed Cass McCombs and Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. The band is the brainchild of Jason Quever, who engineered and produced Cass' first two releases. This is Papercuts' first formal release and it is a collection of beautifully orchestrated lo-fi chamber pop with glimmers of Americana, bringing to mind the best of Smile-era Beach Boys, Beachwood Sparks, and Elliot Smith.
