We don't mean to brag, but when Landlocked tests bombs, we REALLY test bombs. As many of you are aware from your longtime Landlocked Beacon subscription, we have been bombing with jokes since day numero uno! While North Korea might have made a blip on the Richter scale, we could barely feel it over here in Bloomingtopia. Regardless, one of these hot new releases is sure to shiver your timbers at least as much as Kim Jong Il's infallible words, "Buy these new CDs or we will shoot a missile at you!" Select New Releases for 10/10/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Califone - Roots & Crowns CD/LP (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... The fifth proper album by the Chicago-based roots-loving group. Some of these hazy songs are pretty little pop jams, while others are more experimental things stitched together haphazardly, all the wires showing. If you want to hear a group that "pushes the envelope" while never forgoing the pleasure principle, Califone is exactly that. "Black Metal Valentine" and "A Chinese Actor" are stitched-together Tetsuo visions of bluesy, futuristic post-folk, like some magical collaboration between This Heat, the Rolling Stones, and Vetiver. Chavez - Better Days Will Haunt You 2CD+DVD (Matador) ................................................................... Along with Versus, Silkworm, and Red Red Meat, Chavez were one of the best guitar-rock bands in a decade oversaturated with such acts, in both the over- and underground. Fans and newbies alike can rejoice with Better Days, a three-disc collection with 2 CDs and 1 DVD. The tracks - 95's Gone Glimmering and 96's Ride The Fader plus B-sides, a previously unreleased tune, and a few songs from compilations - have all been remastered. The NY-based act had actual harmonies to match their big power-chorded anthems. Sure, their tunes were literate and funny - and they totally rocked. The best thing about the band, as has often been noted, was the twin guitar playing of Clay Tarver and Matt Sweeney. It's in evidence all over this generous retrospective. Dead Can Dance - Wake 2CD (4AD) ................................................................... Posthumous double-disc best of from duo whose unclassifiable sound combined ancient world musics with industrial electronics. Critically acclaimed throughout their 12-year career, both Brendan Perry & Lisa Gerrard have gone on to successful movie soundtrack work. This collection is released as a more affordable alternative to 2001's lavish box-set 'Dead Can Dance 1981-1998'. 26 tracks & a 24-page full color booklet w/ liner notes, song lyrics & photos. El Goodo - El Goodo CD (Empyrean) ................................................................... Out of the haze of the velvet morning comes the first band to ever put the small town of Resolven, at the throbbing heart of Neath Valley, Wales, on the map. El Goodo was unleashed upon the British record-buying public by their good friends and countrymen Super Furry Animals, who originally released their self-titled debut on their very own independent label, Placid Casual, in late 2005. In many ways, El Goodo wear their hearts on their sleeves, their influences are many and their knack for melodies impressive. Taking cues from places as diverse at the Elephant 6 collective to the fuzzed up tones of Scotland's C86 post-punk bands, the mysterious and enigmatic members of El Goodo make a wonderful racket. Gothic Archies - The Tragic Treasury CD (Nonesuch) ................................................................... This musical companion to bestselling novelist Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events is comically creepy fun for children of all ages. The Gothic Archies is a musical project of Stephin Merritt, the songwriter best known for his band the Magnetic Fields. The album, entitled The Tragic Treasury, features music originally recorded for the audiobooks of A Series of Unfortunate Events. The Tragic Treasury contains 13 songs corresponding to the 13 books in the series, with two additional bonus tracks also inspired by the series. All music is performed by the Gothic Archies, with Lemony Snicket accompanying on accordion. Tommy Guerrero - From The Soil To The Soul CD (Quannum) ................................................................... Once upon a time, the city of San Francisco gave birth to a diminutive 3-headed beast named Tommy Guerrero. From a very young age, the kid could skateboard up walls and down hills like no one else. He played in punkrock bands well before he could even get into the clubs legally. Tommy's now music, like his graphic design, is beguilingly simple. He sounds like a guy fucking around on his front stoop, and maybe that's exactly what he is- but the result will touch you down to your toes. From Mission District punkers to Shibuya-Ka hipsters- his melodies dance lightly around your head while the rhythms build under your feet. His is SOUL music, made by a street kid raised on Santana and Bill Withers. With more than a little nod to the Clash and Public Enemy in there, too. Hisato Higuchi - Dialogue CD (Family Vineyard) ................................................................... Dialogue is the first American release by Tokyo's Hisato Higuchi. Originally a puppeteer, Higuchi has transformed his glacial, shadow-box inspired hand movements to the twilight theater of electric guitar. His six-string melodic tones and hushed vocals fan out from the haunted torch songs of Patty Waters and moon-like ambiance. Higuchi's seemingly wordless Japanese croon is a smoky, after-hours call of loss or introspection. The songs of Dialogue float like specters, each piece manifests itself in a unique and singular conception that seeps into your mind and soul. The perfect introduction for stateside listeners and lovers of Loren Mazzacane Connors. Damien Jurado - And Now That I'm In Your Shadow CD/2LP (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... No longer is Damien Jurado just another solo artist but a band. With the help of now permanent members Eric Fisher and Jenna Conrad, Damien has taken on a new side to his career. Rarely from now on will any live performance just include a man with his ideas and guitar but a continuous collaboration in lyrics and sound creating a backdrop to a world that is filled with desperation and blessings, life discovered and life that is lost. Together they will lead you into the lyrical world of the forgotten faces that you once knew. The songs are old friends and close relatives, quarreling loves and love lost, the very thoughts that cross your mind when you are alone or among the crowd. the Melvins - Senile Animal CD (Ipecac) ................................................................... Nineteen albums into their career, The Melvins are about to throw a new look and sound at fans. Bassist Kevin Rutmanis left the band before work began on Senile Animal, which left Osborne and longtime drummer Dale Crover in an experimental headspace. Instead of just replacing their bassist, they elected to add a second drummer as well, so they recruited Big Business' Jared Warren to pluck the four-string and Coady Willis to pound the skins. Warren also sings on the album along with Osborne and Crover. Robert Pollard - Normal Happiness CD/LP (Merge) ................................................................... His second full-length solo record in 2006 is bursting with the obscure lyrics, eccentric song titles, and massive hooks that kept his now-defunct band Guided by Voices erect. While the fragmentary production elements are missing, the hi-fi conclusion is 16 tidy songs that swing between good-natured, somber, exposed, and categorically bizarre. Despite his eternal teenage outlook (and beer-chugging existence), Pollard is shrewd enough to follow his own Rock Star 101 handbook. And that means writing songs at all times of the day, and releasing them any time of the year. Portastatic - Be Still Please CD (Merge) ................................................................... Does Mac McCaughan ever rest? After a decade and a half as the mastermind behind a majority of Superchunk's contagious catalog, the North Carolinian carries on his prolificacy with Portastatic - essentially McCaughan handling all instrumental chores except for an ever-slight and gyratory cast of musicians. Unable to pen and record a clunker amidst his handsome ballads and cascading rockers, McCaughan coalesces sugar-coated melodies with personal, often uproarious lyrics that can make his 40-something voice sound half its age. Rope - Heresy, and Then Nothing But Tears CD (Family Vineyard) ................................................................... Rope formed in Poland as a guitar/bass duo in 1998. Since relocating to Chicago in 2000 they have become one of the city's most flummoxing avant rock groups. Heresy, and Then Nothing But Tears is their second full-length album. Rope blend deconstructed strains of Swans' emotional weight and Last Exit's fury with Krzysztof Komeda's classical suspense into lush and often uncompromising no wave abrasion. Rope's constantly evolving ocean of rhythms, screaming guitar and Iwanik's hissing voice adds up to an ultra-dynamic group force of cryptic awe. Features guest vocals from Grazyna Auguscik and songwriting/vocal collaboration by Oxbow's Eugene Robinson on four songs. Nikki Sudden - The Truth Doesn't Matter CD (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... Sudden's final album before his unfortunate passing on March 26 at age 49. Completed just a week before he left for his final American tour in March 2006, there could not be a more perfect swan song for a man whose personal life and rock 'n' roll life knew no boundaries. This CD was made on a steady diet of later period Marc Bolan glam, Rolling Stones' honky blues, Bobby Womack's soiled R&B, and 70's disco comps. These tracks not only show those influences, but they reflect the flamboyance and wonderful character of a man who seems to have come from another time; a poet whose passion for the written word and delight in its expression in multiple forms was his life's dedication. These Arms Are Snakes - Easter CD (Jade Tree) ................................................................... Their second full-length for Jade Tree finds the Seattle foursome towing a proverbial line between paradox, hostility, and a caustic blend of post-hard/math core. Heavy guitars collide with greasy analog-synth blurts and post-punk grooves. Easter explores the relationship between suspect animism, impending otherworldly doom, and the ethereal battle between virtue and ruin. For fans of Drive Like Jehu, The Jesus Lizard, Led Zeppelin. American Hardcore: The History of American Punk Rock CD (Rhino) ................................................................... There'd be no Nirvana, Beastie Boys, or Red Hot Chili Peppers were it not for hardcore pioneers such as Black Flag, Bad Brains, and Minor Threat. Hardcore was more than music; it was a social movement created by Reagan-era misfit kids. Featuring 26 definitive tracks, this is the audio companion to the feature-length documentary, released in September. Artists include Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Circle Jerks, Cro-Mags, Adolescents, Die Kreuzen, Flipper, Gang Green, Negative Approach, DOA, MDC, DRI, and more. Bloodied but Unbowed: Bloodshot Records' Life in the Trenches DVD ................................................................... Bloodied But Unbowed chronicles Bloodshot Records' 12 years (and counting) in the trenches of independent music. There's 31 videos and live performances from the likes of Ryan Adams, Old 97s, Detroit Cobras, Alejandro Escovedo, Waco Brothers, Deadstring Brothers, Bobby Bare Jr, Graham Parker, Wayne Hancock and many more. There's 8 short films that range from the tear jerking and insightful to the side splitting and weird, and delve into subjects as diverse as Ryan Adams on the road, Chicago honky tonk in the 50s and 60s and the venal snake pit that is the music industry. Features appearances and performances from Kelly Hogan, Neko Case, Andre Williams, Ryan Adams, Jon Langford, Sally Timms, Split Lip Rayfield, the Meat Purveyors and the Sundowners and much more. File next to Thin Lizzy, Replacements and Spoon. With their first album since 2002's critically acclaimed This Flag Signals Goodbye, Swearing at Motorists return with a career-defining album. Last Night Becomes This Morning is frontman Dave Doughman's indie version of Running On Empty. It was recorded on the road, between and while on tour in various locations - at soundchecks, in hotel rooms, rehearsal halls and on the bus. It is an album about 2 artists in love and how their craft keeps them apart. LNBTM is a record of transition - and the confusion, discovery and understanding with which it comes. Where Running On Empty told of the battle to cope with fame & fortune, LNBTM chronicles the struggle to live life on the road in spite of lack of fame or fortune. In place of the sold out arenas, its live sound comes in busking in an empty Berlin subway station. Ground-Ups are a Bloomington outfit that has gained and dropped a few members since their founding in 1999 and now weighs in duo-song-style with drummer/vocalist Jeremy Kennedy (Puppy vs, Dyslexia, Rapider Than Horsepower) and trumpet/sax/electronics ace Eric Weddle (Family Vineyard Records proprietor, John Wilkes Booze). Their sound is part Mingus lunacy matched with the shambles of Half Japanese; or maybe DNA as fronted by Rashaan Roland Kirk. Though with all the songs about food, touching, and bleeding and it is more like a Cibo Matto collaboration with Kaoru Abe's restless spirit. Keep holding yr breathe for their upcoming "Dippin' in da Musturd" 2xLP. Hudson Bell's new CD... It's just one hook lined pop song after another. It's one huge, soaring chorus after the next. It's genuinely emotional guitar solos place right smack dab where they are supposed to be. It's heartfelt crescendos that will pull your heart out through your chest while you let the waves of rock wash your ears clean of all the crappy music you have become accustomed to. It's the epitome of what a feel good rock record for the 2000's should sound like, and I can't stress to you how good it feels to just sit back and crank this one up. - Indie Work Shop Though the Kingdom's distinctive poetics and metaphysics alone would make Unitas a compelling debut, the skyscraping vocals and keen melodies transform these songs from bedroom-born 4-track charm into basement party anthems, brimming with teenage abandon. From the complex, intersecting vocal lines to soaring choruses, the EP displays a knowing mastery of Zombies-esque pop, as played by a generation that embraced Guided By Voices, not U2, as rock'n'roll saviors. Though Portland has sprouted many promising pop savants of late, The Kingdom's meticulous song-craft, coupled with their feverish, ebullient presentation, unite the visceral and the cerebral into an eminently enjoyable and erudite whole. Mentored by Daniel Lanois at his Teatro Studio in Los Angeles, Burton has been putting his project-oriented stamp on a variety of records for the last 10 years. Anywhere from early Songs: Ohia recordings to the pink noise and melodies of Windsor for the Derby, Burton's ideas and experiences with various bands in the studio have coalesced into this career-defining work, Offshore. Equally beautiful and noisy, composed though loose; akin to late 80s/early 90s 4AD-laden world of shoegaze wash-rock like Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, Mark Hollis, their predecessor Peter Gabriel or modern day saint William Basinski. Offshore has been a favorite for years. This is the director's cut. Pela lives in the not-so-fashionable waterfront neighborhood of Red Hook - the setting of Hubert Selby's Last Exit in Brooklyn. It's also home to many artists, dock workers, cranes, and shipping containers. They make desperate songs about addiction, isolation, hope, murder, sex, and Mexico. It's pretty dark stuff, but a lot of people find their songs really catchy. Someone once told them that their music sounds like what might happen if Modest Mouse hitched a ride on U2's tour bus. They've opened up for Rainer Maria, The National, The Decemberists, Earlimart, Sleater Kinney, and a recent string of dates out east with Early Day Miners. Almost every one of their songs consists of acoustic gee-tar, rattling percussion, chord organ and some of the most gorgeous (in that weird Fugsy way) old-timey harmonies you'll ever hear. They sing about canoes and death and the Civil War and loose women - the sorts of things that matter to folks like you and me on a daily basis. Be careful, their heartbreaking melodies are liable to charm the pants right off ya, and never will you be stuck with such a shit-eating grin, pantsless, than you will at a Drakkar Sauna performance. Over his first few albums Ashworth defined a hybrid strain of raw, emotional, and very homemade synth pop that was instantly recognizable as his own - claustrophobic 2-minute character studies shuddered with reverbed beats, blown-out chords, and simple but infectous melodies, all layered beneath Ashworth's sometimes funny but always heartbreaking lyrics. Now the sound of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone has grown to include pianos, organs, strings, flutes, drums, and pedal steel guitars in addition to Ashworth's signature electronics and drum machines. Papercuts is part of the emerging San Francisco indie-singer/songwriter scene that produced the critically acclaimed Cass McCombs and Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. The band is the brainchild of Jason Quever, who engineered and produced Cass' first two releases. Papercuts' first formal release is a collection of beautifully orchestrated lo-fi chamber pop with glimmers of Americana, bringing to mind the best of Smile-era Beach Boys, Beachwood Sparks, and Elliot Smith.
