Select New Releases for 10/17/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Annuals - Be He Me CD (Ace Fu) ................................................................... Nineteen year-old Adam Baker, a kid from rural Apex, NC with a faultless ear and a potent desire to create unheard-of sounds, is the architect of Annuals. Under Adam's stewardship, Annuals transform pop paradigms into sweeping, luxuriant sonic landscapes while remaining faithful to a wholehearted emotional core. Carefully layering each song with a thousand noises and feelings, Annuals camouflage the deep simplicity of what they do, belying their youth with deftness & complexity. Badly Drawn Boy - Born In The UK CD (Astralwerks) ................................................................... Born in the UK is the 5th album released by singer-songwriter Badly Drawn Boy. The album is a reflection on the artist's life in The United Kingdom. Gough wanted to "capture something about being British". The album was recorded twice, the first having been discarded as Gough was unhappy with the recording. Worried that his second attempt at the album may again result in failure Gough attempted to "try to get a song out each day", which resulted in between sixty and eighty song ideas. Over 25 songs were finally recorded for the album, only 13 making the final cut. For this album Damon is working alongside Nick Franglen of Lemon Jelly fame. Dean & Britta - Words You Used to Say CD-EP (Rounder) ................................................................... Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips are known for being one-half of the critically acclaimed band Luna. Founded by Wareham in 1992, Luna released 7 studio albums. Prior to that, Wareham led the seminal indie band Galaxie 500. In 2002, Dean & Britta released their debut album, L'Avventura. Once upon a time, Britta was the singing voice of cartoon rock-star Jem. Dean and Britta also scored the music to last year's Academy Award-nominated film 'The Squid and the Whale' and to Morgan Freeman's upcoming film 'Just Like the Son'. Their 2nd full-length album will be released in January. This EP and the upcoming full-length were produced by Tony Visconti (David Bowie, T. Rex) and features covers of Adam Green, Michael Holland, Donovan and Bobby Darin. Jeremy Enigk - World Waits CD (Reincarnate) ................................................................... While it wasn't the whole world waiting patiently for Jeremy Enigk's follow-up to his 1996 solo debut Return of the Frog Queen, a healthy fraction has followed the Seattle artist's work since Sunny Day Real Estate and through the Fire Theft. And most will find the wait for this one well worth it. Enigk's voice is close to perfection, blanketed by resonating melodies and bold arrangements, and although his lyrics can be difficult to decode, they flutter beneath the swirling guitars and calming keyboards in a near fragile state. Ghost Mice - Collection One: Fairy Battle LP (Valiant Death) ................................................................... For those who don't know, Ghost Mice are Chris Clavin and Hannah Jones from bands such as: Operation: Cliff Clavin, The Devil Is Electric, Disarm, and the Sissies. They are also a two piece acoustic folk punk band from Bloomington playing songs about everything from liberation and freedom to pizza, bikes, and traveling. Green vinyl with a beautiful full color cover and labels with art by Chris Clavin. Very Limited! Tim Hecker - Harmony in Ultraviolet (Kranky) ................................................................... Harmony in Ultraviolet is Tim Hecker's 6th album. It is a continuation of Hecker's interest in spectral communications, noise, impressionist musics, thresholds of listening pleasure/pain, and the limits of digital composition. This album is a significant development of his song-craft, challenging the usefulness of descriptors such as ambient, drone, metal, noise and even electronic music. If references are necessary it could be described as a sonata for the elements, songs of crackling embers, tidal pools, spruce skylines and autumn winds. Gerhard Richter's abstract paintings are also a fair orientation. Materially speaking, it is a record of whirring drones, whispering fissures, dense disintegrating chords, late-night noise and truth-telling harmonics. Bert Jansch - The Black Swan CD/LP (Drag City) ................................................................... The career of Bert Jansch crosses over 40 years and encompasses nearly 30 albums, (not counting his records with Pentangle) many of which are regarded as classics by the smart young people today. He's one of UK's music heroes and has been acknowledged as such over the course of the last few years. The Black Swan is a new record that brings fresh life to the sounds Bert Jansch has played for years. Whether playing with authority in a solo setting or collaborating with folks like Beth Orton, David Roback, Devendra Banhart and Espers' Helena Espvell and Otto Hauser, he communicates originals and traditional songs with a vibrancy that either belies the years or confirms that time is everything. Joe Jack Talcum - Home Recordings 1984-97 CD (Valiant Death) ................................................................... Joe Jack Talcum's Home Recordings collection is 24 tracks spanning 13 years of Talcum's musical career. Best known as the guitarist and vocalist for the band the Dead Milkmen, this CD pays homage to Joe Jack Talcum's solo recordings, while only the tip of the iceberg of Joe Jack's complete music works, it still remains as an important collection of some of Joe's best loved songs. This album features the voice and guitar work loved by fans of the Dead Milkmen but explored on a deeper and more personal level. Catchy arrangements of instruments bring to mind the Beatles, Tom Waits, Daniel Johnston and Joe's lyrical style is of course much like the Dead Milkmen. Madeline - The Slow Bang LP (Valiant Death) Madeline - What The Devil Don't Know Zine (Valiant Death) ................................................................... New full length by Bton ex-pat and Athens' beloved Madeline. The 9 songs on this new LP reach a new level of beauty both in Madeline's voice and the music accompanying her. While still maintaining her folk style she has also expanded to incorporate new elements in her music and drums, piano, bass, backing vocals, and more chime in to complete the serenity of this very enjoyable album. Very Limited! The zine includes all the songs from Kissing & Dancing, The Slow Bang, and her split with Dead Bird for a total of 32 songs. Each song includes complete lyrics, easy to understand chord diagrams, and lots of wonderful original illustrations by Madeline herself. This is a must have for any fan of Madeline's music, not just guitar players. Filled with great writing and wonderfully designed this is a fun read for just about anyone. Sadies - Tales of the Rat Fink OST (Yep Roc) ................................................................... At last, The Sadies have taken their psychedelic hot-rod-soundtrack stylings and created... a psychedelic soundtrack for a hot rod movie! Tales of the Rat Fink by Ron Mann, the award-winning director of Comic Book Confidential and Grass, chronicles the wild life of Renaissance man Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, who engineered a shift in mid-20th century culture with his customized cars, monster T-shirts and America's alternative rodent - Rat Fink. Mann's largely animated documentary features the voice talents of John Goodman, Ann-Margret, Jay Leno, Brian Wilson, Tom Wolfe, Matt Groening, Robert Williams, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Paul Le Mat, Billy Gibbons, and The Smothers Brothers. The CD captures The Sadies' entire score full of their patent-pending blend of rock, surf and spaghetti western audial shakedowns. Squarepusher - Hello Everything CD/LP (Warp) ................................................................... Tom Jenkinson makes manic, schizoid experimental electronic compositions with a heavy progressive jazz influence and a lean toward pushing the cliches of the genre out the proverbial window. Jenkinson grew up listening to jazz and dub greats like Miles Davis, Augustus Pablo, Charlie Parker, and Art Blakey. The son of a jazz drummer, Jenkinson followed in his father's footsteps, playing bass and drums in high school. His new album, Hello Everything is an absolute pleasure. An album with a contented warmth and richness which can be savoured from beginning to end. Squarepusher has maintained the balance between experimentation, emotional colour and fun to produce a record of depth, variation and greatness. Hudson Bell's new CD... It's just one hook lined pop song after another. It's one huge, soaring chorus after the next. It's genuinely emotional guitar solos place right smack dab where they are supposed to be. It's heartfelt crescendos that will pull your heart out through your chest while you let the waves of rock wash your ears clean of all the crappy music you have become accustomed to. It's the epitome of what a feel good rock record for the 2000's should sound like, and I can't stress to you how good it feels to just sit back and crank this one up. - Indie Work Shop Though the Kingdom's distinctive poetics and metaphysics alone would make Unitas a compelling debut, the skyscraping vocals and keen melodies transform these songs from bedroom-born 4-track charm into basement party anthems, brimming with teenage abandon. From the complex, intersecting vocal lines to soaring choruses, the EP displays a knowing mastery of Zombies-esque pop, as played by a generation that embraced Guided By Voices, not U2, as rock'n'roll saviors. Though Portland has sprouted many promising pop savants of late, The Kingdom's meticulous song-craft, coupled with their feverish, ebullient presentation, unite the visceral and the cerebral into an eminently enjoyable and erudite whole. Mentored by Daniel Lanois at his Teatro Studio in Los Angeles, Burton has been putting his project-oriented stamp on a variety of records for the last 10 years. Anywhere from early Songs: Ohia recordings to the pink noise and melodies of Windsor for the Derby, Burton's ideas and experiences with various bands in the studio have coalesced into this career-defining work, Offshore. Equally beautiful and noisy, composed though loose; akin to late 80s/early 90s 4AD-laden world of shoegaze wash-rock like Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, Mark Hollis, their predecessor Peter Gabriel or modern day saint William Basinski. Offshore has been a favorite for years. This is the director's cut. Pela lives in the not-so-fashionable waterfront neighborhood of Red Hook - the setting of Hubert Selby's Last Exit in Brooklyn. It's also home to many artists, dock workers, cranes, and shipping containers. They make desperate songs about addiction, isolation, hope, murder, sex, and Mexico. It's pretty dark stuff, but a lot of people find their songs really catchy. Someone once told them that their music sounds like what might happen if Modest Mouse hitched a ride on U2's tour bus. They've opened up for Rainer Maria, The National, The Decemberists, Earlimart, Sleater Kinney, and a recent string of dates out east with Early Day Miners. Almost every one of their songs consists of acoustic gee-tar, rattling percussion, chord organ and some of the most gorgeous (in that weird Fugsy way) old-timey harmonies you'll ever hear. They sing about canoes and death and the Civil War and loose women - the sorts of things that matter to folks like you and me on a daily basis. Be careful, their heartbreaking melodies are liable to charm the pants right off ya, and never will you be stuck with such a shit-eating grin, pantsless, than you will at a Drakkar Sauna performance. HALL - http://www.ephall.com/ Casiotone for the Painfully Alone is the musical alias of film school drop-out Owen Ashworth. Over his first few albums Ashworth defined a hybrid strain of raw, emotional, and very homemade synth pop that was instantly recognizable as his own - claustrophobic 2-minute character studies shuddered with reverbed beats, blown-out chords, and simple but infectous melodies, all layered beneath Ashworth's sometimes funny but always heartbreaking lyrics. Now the sound of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone has grown to include pianos, organs, strings, flutes, drums, and pedal steel guitars in addition to Ashworth's signature electronics and drum machines. Papercuts is part of the emerging San Francisco indie-singer/songwriter scene that produced the critically acclaimed Cass McCombs and Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. The band is the brainchild of Jason Quever, who engineered and produced Cass' first two releases. Papercuts' first formal release is a collection of beautifully orchestrated lo-fi chamber pop with glimmers of Americana, bringing to mind the best of Smile-era Beach Boys, Beachwood Sparks, and Elliot Smith.
