Attention gentle-peoples of Bloomington: Drakkar Sauna has had to cancel their performance at Landlocked Music tonight. So there is no show. Sorry. We and they apologize. But breathe easy, they still love us and will be back as soon as they can muster. In the meantime, you can still purchase their CDs and 7inch recordings from us. To help ease the pain, we have also added a super-special performance from My Brightest Diamond, fresh off tour with Sufjan Stevens. Read more below. If you are still feeling a crushing sadness, maybe one of these cute new releases will satisfy your appetite? Select New Releases for 11/7/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ David Bazan - Away In A Manger 7" (Suicide Squeeze) ................................................................... Continuing with the Yuletide tradition, Dave Bazan (Pedro the Lion, Headphones) delivers his own rendition of the timeless Christmas classics "Away In A Manger" and "O Little Town of Bethlehem". This marks the fourth in a series of limited edition Christmas singles for Suicide Squeeze Records. Limited to 1,000 copies! Isobel Campbell - Milk White Sheets CD (V2) ................................................................... Her second solo record, the follow-up to her Mercury Prize-nominated collaboration with Mark Lanegan, "Ballad Of The Broken Seas", finds the former Belle & Sebastian chanteuse and cellist drawing inspiration more from the various folk traditions of the British Isles than the classic country leanings of "Ballad". Still working primarily with guitarist Jim McCulloch (Soup Dragons), Isobel collaborates with James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins) and her touring band mate Eugene Kelly (Vaselines, Eugenius). The Evens - Get Evens CD/LP (Dischord) ................................................................... The Evens are Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi) on baritone guitar and vocals and Amy Farina of the Warmers on drums and vocals. Their's is a more laid-back sound than MacKaye's earlier work and a somewhat less angular approach than the Warmers. The lyrics are some of the most straightforward and politically caustic of MacKaye's career, packing a punch equal to some of his most visceral moments in Minor Threat. Farina never overplays and calls only for what the compositions need, accentuating empty spaces and providing a heavy weight that even the most piercing wall of noise and feedback couldn't accomplish. Benjy Ferree - Leaving The Nest CD (Domino) ................................................................... Leaving The Nest has a surefooted timelessness in an era of trends being cycled and recycled through at an exhausting speed. Musical and historical ghosts of The South haunt the corners of this album like a Faulknerian travelogue while bringing to mind the works of Terrence Malick, whose movies leave it to the viewer to find meaning in all the ambiguous beauty. A charming piece of backporch Americana that brought to mind the likes of Iron & Wine, Beachwood Sparks, and even a bit of Bright Eyes. PJ Harvey - Peel Sessions 1991-2004 CD/LP (Island) ................................................................... Available on CD and vinyl formats, the twelve tracks, chosen by Polly, span her career; from early versions of the songs on debut album Dry (1992) to her seventh album Uh Huh Her, released in 2004. Harvey recorded many sessions with John Peel over the years. Of the release, Lousie Kattenhorn, John's Producer, said "John loved the sessions and was thrilled to have Polly record so many for his show. He considered her a wonderful artist and they were great friends. It's fantastic that they're coming out." Lithops - Mound Magnet CD (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... Lithops are plants from Namibia and South Africa also known as living stones for their deceptive appearance. Lithops is also Jan St. Werner, who is known to many as one third of Mouse on Mars, Cologne's masters of the dense grooves and one half of Microstoria, the collaborative project with Oval's Markus Popp. The prolific Werner, who recently released "Queries", a collection of singles, has taken a more melodic approach on this record. Off-kilter beats, strident rhythms and odd textures to create abstracted electronic compositions that are endlessly appealing. Albums like this keep electronic music moving onto unpredictable grounds. Owen - At Home With Owen CD (Polyvinyl) ................................................................... Chicago's Mike Kinsella (Cap'n Jazz, Joan Of Arc, American Football, Owls) is the sole creative output behind Owen. From an artist who has, in the past, recorded entire albums in his childhood bedroom berating lost love and personal missteps, it's a new chapter. The end result is this record, a new extension in the lineage of Owen's music. And being at home with oneself never sounded so freeing. Kinsella brings to mind the acousticity of Elliott Smith... with subtexts that range from the somber folk reflection of Nick Drake and the cracked emotionalism of Paul Westerberg to the glorious pop melancholy of Joe Pernice. Pavement - Wowee Zowee 2CD [Reissue] (Matador) ................................................................... Originally released in April 1995, fresh off the success of "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain", the band recorded a deliberately chaotic and eclectic album that sounded nothing like its predecessor. With influences from the Groundhogs to the Frogs, Captain Beefheart to the more obscure mid-'80s central California hardcore bands, "Wowee Zowee" confused critics and alienated fans. Yet it became a fan favorite over time. The songs have a darkness that now seems appropriate and with Bryce Goggin at the mixing desk, the production was the band's most rocking to date. This super-deluxe re-mastered comp contains an embossed slipcase with two CDs and a 64-page perfect-bound book, fifty tracks total; eighteen unreleased recordings, nine non-album b-sides, four compilation tracks, five BBC Evening Session tracks and much more. 31 Knots - Polemics CDEP (Polyvinyl) ................................................................... Polemics expands 31 Knots sound with the addition of new instrumentation, new timbre, and further experimentation on their syncopated style. The album takes its name from the lyrical content of the album which represents literal arguments representing a conclusion of two or more view points. ................................................................... Spanish tango, Sunday morning gospel, classical and jazz were the accompaniment to her home life. Her songs distil stories to their most distressing points of contact: a phone call, an injured horse, a dragonfly caught in a spider's web. Shara's songs reconcile all the complex emotions found in each of us: she can grieve as comfortably as she can laugh, sometimes in the same breath. Both hypnotic and ringing, his playing often involves unusual string technique which is tightly integrated between the sounding of harmonics and articulation of notes. Dwelling in a blurring string-space between Tony Conrad and Elliot Sharp, Lawler has created an original idiom of music that is at once monolithic, cosmic, and yeah, deeply American. The acoustic guitar isn't a new instrument to Mike Tamburo. It was his main axe in his former outfits, Meisha and Arco Flute Foundation, though his recordings since leave his playing rather starkly unadorned by sidemen or accompaniment. Tamburo's no purist, he has no qualms with regard to augmenting his pieces with other instruments, or making use of nontraditional techniques in his playing, but his emergence as a solo artist marks a turn into more folk-tinged territory for the guitarist. Comparisons in his playing can be made to the usual suspects, Fahey, Basho-Junghans, and their ilk, but Tamburo isn't a straight disciple of any of the prevalent deities of acoustic guitardom. And while some people want to call him a Midwestern Syd Barrett, that comparison requires a total lack of regard for oneself that is not Jorma, he's really more like the Midwestern John Lennon. Completely in love with the power and love and eccentricities inherent to rock and roll. Jorma's music is incredibly personal, almost bare admissions of guilt and inward-loooking apologies. Everything is a contradiction within Jorma, he's a liar, but yet honest because he admits he's a liar. Jorma's live performances are rare, memorable, and not to be missed. Odawas are nicking all over the place: from Randy Newman's plain-spoken grandeur or Beach Boy story-telling or Angelo Badalamanti's cheesy romanticism or Charles Ives' avant-garde ear or Art Garfunkel's "presence-of-a-blue-whale" harmonies. They have obvious influences of course - who doesn't? - Spacemen 3, early Sonic Youth, La Monte Young, Terry Riley, the Velvet Underground, 13th Floor Elevators, Pere Ubu when they were dangerous; these are obvious ones, but so are bands like Section 25 and Joy Division. Their silvery, slithering melodic fabric has no seam, everything lies down together in a psychedelic rock & roll orgy of acid-guzzled, dark-thrummed bliss. Renegades to traditional song structure, Indian Jewelry mix drum machine, noise, percussion, loops, dance beats, guitar, keyboards, scraps of metal, and other sounds into an unpredictable mash of aural delights, drones, and melody. RIYL: music based in cowboy motorik, hyperliterary chants and magical realism, concrete sound, endless drones, pre-cognitive dissonance, mesmerism, and atavistic junk.
