Well folks, baseball season is over, Halloween has passed, and the election has been finalised. That means its almost time for the Thanksgiving holiday and (fingers crossed) a mild winter. We will be closed on Turkey Day, as well as Turkey-Eve, but we will throw our door open with reckless abandon on the biggest shopping day of the season, Friday November 24th, and welcome any and all to get their holiday shop on. Heck, we might even provide some live entertainment and spiced cider for your shopping pleasure (more details to come...) Meanwhile, check out these hot new releases to occupy your ears during your holiday travels: Select New Releases for 11/14/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - So Divided (Interscope) ................................................................... Trail of Dead return with So Divided, their third Interscope album and follow-up to 2005's World's Apart. Includes guest appearances from King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto and Dresden Dolls' Amanda Palmer. Features a cover of Guided By Voices' "Gold Heart Mountain Top Queen Directory". Johnny Cash - At San Quentin (2CD+DVD Legacy Edition) (Sony) ................................................................... This 2CD set presents the entire concert, start to finish. Still grippingly intense after 37 years, it not only assembles Cash's performance, but those by the other members of his stage show: June Carter, her mother and sisters (as the Carter Family), Carl Perkins and the Statler Brothers. Cash's performances remain beyond criticism, but Perkins, the Carters, and the Statlers smoke nearly as much. Among the high points is their unreleased, spine-chilling gospel medley of He Turned the Water into Wine, Daddy Sang Bass, and The Old Account. The accompanying DVD comprises a documentary shot at the show in which the Cash performances act mainly as a leitmotif to its focus on San Quentin and its inmates. Incredible Bongo Band - Bongo Rock [reissue] (Mr Bongo) ................................................................... The Incredible Bongo Band's cover of Apache, originally made famous by The Shadows, is simply legendary in the world of dance music. Not only arguably one of the most sampled tracks of all time and a staple for Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash as they invented the art of DJing at the Bronx block parties of the 70s, it has become an all-time hip hop and breakers anthem and is revered as the original break of all original breaks with the rhythms of this LP coining the term Breakbeat. Bongo Rock features the two original Bongo Band albums in their entirety. "If you dont know Apache, you dont know hip-hop." - Pete Rock Joanna Newsom - Ys (Drag City) ................................................................... It's been 2+ years since Joanna's Drag City debut, The Milk-Eyed Mender, captured the hearts of fans and critics with its lilting harp and vocal majesty. On Ys, Joanna has recorded five epic songs clocking in at 55 minutes. The album was recorded with Steve Albini, mixed with Jim O'Rourke, and features orchestral arrangements from the legendary Van Dyke Parks. On Ys, you will hear a dream collaboration between Joanna's voice, her harp, and a full orchestra. The album is a ride that ebbs and flows in a scrumptious cacophony of layers and drama. The wide-screened beauty of Ys is due to, among other things, the all-analog production mixed to tape and mastered at Abbey Road. White Magic - Dat Rosa Mel Apibus (Drag City) ................................................................... The new White Magic album, Dat Rosa Mel Apibus (Latin for "The rose gives honey to the bees," casts a tangled spell in 12 tracks, featuring the bewitching vocals of Billotte (Quix*o*tic) and the instrumentation of "Sleepy" Doug Shaw on guitars, gongs, percussion, etc. Also summoned to partake of the Magic-making: Jim White (Dirty Three) on drums; Tim Dewitt (Gang Gang Dance) on drums; Jesse Lee on still more drums; Shahzad Ismaily on bass; Tim Barnes on bells and percussion; Social Registry-signed Samara Lubelski on violin; Chris Rael on sitar; and Karen Leblanc on accordion. Neil Young - Live at the Fillmore East (Reprise) ................................................................... For years, fans of Neil Young and Crazy Horse have been waiting for an official chance to hear Crazy Horse live with original leader Danny Whitten, the insanely talented guitarist who died of a heroin overdose in late 1972, inspiring Tonight's the Night. Tuned-in fans have been awaiting this very set for at least a dozen years. And thankfully, this well-recorded live set from the infamous Fillmore East was well worth the wait. Scorching, extended takes of "Down by the River," "Winterlong," and "Cowgirl in the Sand," each propelled by guitar interplay so delightful you have to keep rewinding to hear it again. In fact, bits of it seem to prefigure the ways that Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine would feed off each other in the band Television. Worth it alone for the version of "Wondering," a tune not officially recorded until many years later in Neil's weird '80s rockabilly phase. Yusuf (Cat Stevens) - An Other Cup (Atlantic) ................................................................... Three decades after decisively trading fame and his superstar moniker for the spiritual devotion for which his restless '70s songs seemed a perpetual quest, the singer-songwriter born Steven Demetre Georgiou has successfully resurrected Cat Stevens's muse, if not his persona. The musician whose dedicated embrace of Islam embroiled him in controversy frequently sings its praises on An Other Cup. On his return to music, Yusuf says "I feel right about making music and singing about life in this fragile world again. It is important for me to help bridge the cultural gaps others are sometimes frightened to cross." VA - Jewface (Reboot Stereophonic) ................................................................... Consisting of Jewish minstrel songs that took vaudeville stages by storm at the turn of the 20th century. Composed by legendary tunesmiths like Irving Berlin and Gus Kahn, many of these songs made use of authentically Jewish musical motifs, fusing them with every Jewish stereotype under the sun. From "Under the Matzos Tree" to "I'm a Yiddish Cowboy," exploring the Jewface recordings reveals one of the dirty little secrets of American culture: some of the very first hit records were fiendishly catchy Jewish musical creations! All of these songs have been remastered from cylinder recordings to create one of the most remarkable, and perhaps offensive, albums ever. Spanish tango, Sunday morning gospel, classical and jazz were the accompaniment to her home life. Her songs distil stories to their most distressing points of contact: a phone call, an injured horse, a dragonfly caught in a spider's web. Shara's songs reconcile all the complex emotions found in each of us: she can grieve as comfortably as she can laugh, sometimes in the same breath. Both hypnotic and ringing, his playing often involves unusual string technique which is tightly integrated between the sounding of harmonics and articulation of notes. Dwelling in a blurring string-space between Tony Conrad and Elliot Sharp, Lawler has created an original idiom of music that is at once monolithic, cosmic, and yeah, deeply American. The acoustic guitar isn't a new instrument to Mike Tamburo. It was his main axe in his former outfits, Meisha and Arco Flute Foundation, though his recordings since leave his playing rather starkly unadorned by sidemen or accompaniment. Tamburo's no purist, he has no qualms with regard to augmenting his pieces with other instruments, or making use of nontraditional techniques in his playing, but his emergence as a solo artist marks a turn into more folk-tinged territory for the guitarist. Comparisons in his playing can be made to the usual suspects, Fahey, Basho-Junghans, and their ilk, but Tamburo isn't a straight disciple of any of the prevalent deities of acoustic guitardom. And while some people want to call him a Midwestern Syd Barrett, that comparison requires a total lack of regard for oneself that is not Jorma, he's really more like the Midwestern John Lennon. Completely in love with the power and love and eccentricities inherent to rock and roll. Jorma's music is incredibly personal, almost bare admissions of guilt and inward-loooking apologies. Everything is a contradiction within Jorma, he's a liar, but yet honest because he admits he's a liar. Jorma's live performances are rare, memorable, and not to be missed. Odawas are nicking all over the place: from Randy Newman's plain-spoken grandeur or Beach Boy story-telling or Angelo Badalamanti's cheesy romanticism or Charles Ives' avant-garde ear or Art Garfunkel's "presence-of-a-blue-whale" harmonies. They have obvious influences of course - who doesn't? - Spacemen 3, early Sonic Youth, La Monte Young, Terry Riley, the Velvet Underground, 13th Floor Elevators, Pere Ubu when they were dangerous; these are obvious ones, but so are bands like Section 25 and Joy Division. Their silvery, slithering melodic fabric has no seam, everything lies down together in a psychedelic rock & roll orgy of acid-guzzled, dark-thrummed bliss. Renegades to traditional song structure, Indian Jewelry mix drum machine, noise, percussion, loops, dance beats, guitar, keyboards, scraps of metal, and other sounds into an unpredictable mash of aural delights, drones, and melody. RIYL: music based in cowboy motorik, hyperliterary chants and magical realism, concrete sound, endless drones, pre-cognitive dissonance, mesmerism, and atavistic junk.
