Well, it looks like this might be our last stand of this delightful indian summer. First comes the rain, then the bitter cold. You've waited so long to visit us, you better do it now. If not now, how about soon - we have two more performances this year scheduled, the next being this saturday w/ former Marmoset frontman Jorma Whittaker and the effervescent Odawas. After that, look for emails with some great gift ideas and our year end lists. Exciting, eh? Let's see what this slow week has for us. Select New Releases for 11/28/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Noah Georgeson - Find Shelter CD (Plain) ................................................................... Noah Georgeson is perhaps best known as a producer for Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, and Bert Jansch, though he is also a member of Banhart's touring band. Find Shelter was recorded in San Francisco and Nevada City between 1999 and 2003. From the Autumn 1999 until Spring 2004, Georgeson lived in the first-floor apartment in a Victorian house on Castro Street in San Francisco. At first, he lived alone in a room that was about the right size for an infant, and had once been a nursery. After a while, he moved into the room down the hall from the nursery, which he shared with his girlfriend Joanna and her harp. Among the waves of their lives in this room, Joanna wrote most of the songs that ended up on her first album, and Georgeson wrote the songs included here. Mark Kozelek - Little Drummer Boy 2CD (Caldo Verde) ................................................................... Kozelek's follow up to Sun Kil Moon's Tiny Cities is a limited edition live two disc set that features live versions of Red House Painters classics (Katy Song, Bubble) and Sun Kil Moon favorites as well as personalized covers of Modest Mouse, Cars and AC/DC. Twenty songs in all, including two new previously unreleased songs. The majority of the album's tracks were recorded live to CDR during Mark's european and north american performances this past year. Midlake - Milkmaid Grand Army CDEP (Basement Front) ................................................................... Grand Army the seven-song EP was originally released independently in November of 2001. The initial pressing was a modest 1000 copies and, once the stock was depleted, the band decided to cease production, making the recording a rare collectors item. That is, until now. With the release of Milkmaid Grand Army, Midlake reveals the beginning stages of a music career that has proven prosperous and continues to gain momentum. Max Richter - Songs from Before CD (Fat Cat) ................................................................... Fat Cat's 130701 imprint was established as a creative outlet for music of a more orchestrated, instrumental variety. Beautifully recorded and cinematic in scope, 'Songs From Before' once again carries a pensive, emotionally resonant tone throughout that manages to fully engage the listener. Following 2004's critically acclaimed 'The Blue Notebooks', 'Songs' provides a further refined, perhaps even subtler take on Max's narrative landscape, yet sounds as contemporary and impacting as any of his previous work. Punctuated by Robert Wyatt's distinctive, understated readings of Haruki Murakami's text (chosen for it's Kafka-esque tone), 'Songs From Before' utilises piano, cello, violin and viola, with Max playing piano, mixing and producing. Equal parts electronic and composed, haunting and chilling. RIYL Eno, Glass, Satie, Reich, Arvo Part, Rachels. Rivulets - You Are My Home CD (Important) ................................................................... Often driven only by voice or quiet guitar, Rivulets is frighteningly gentle, yet genuinely powerful. The brooding love songs of Mark Kozelek's Red House Painters are an apt comparison, as are the acute, windswept soundscapes of Iceland's Sigur Ros. Most often, the music suggests the isolation and odd beauty found at the center of an iced-over lake in the middle of winter. Features guests Jessica Bailiff (Kranky), Chris Brokaw (Codeine, Come, The New Year), Christian Frederickson (Rachel's), Fred Lonberg-Holm (Boxhead Ensemble), and Bob Weston (Mission of Burma, Shellac). This is not a folk album. This is an album about hearts breaking, tearing it down, and moving on. Mark Sandman - Sandbox 2CD+DVD (Hi N Dry) ................................................................... Morphine had a sound all their own, a distinctive blend of sonorous saxophone, bass and deep grooves that, along with Mark's lyric poetry, propelled them to fame. But Mark created much more than the brilliant music of Morphine. Although Morphine and the seminal swamp-blues quartet Treat Her Right became well known, much of his work was never released and remains unheard. After 5 years of culling the large collection of original music, poetry and art left behind by Mark after his untimely death in 1999, the surviving members of Morphine have assembled an essential collection. More a musical adventure than a "greatest hits" set, the 30 songs on Sandbox are connected by the voice and the singular musical and lyrical vision of Mark. Sandbox also includes a DVD of rare and unseen footage, artifacts of Mark's career and even more Sandman music. ................................................................... Check out our upcoming performances: Satuday, December 2nd @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ------------------------------------------------------------------ JORMA WHITTAKER - http://www.myspace.com/jormawhittaker99 ODAWAS - http://www.myspace.com/odawastheband Jorma Whittaker fronted Indianapolis' Marmoset- a bedroom masterpiece of mood music for folks who like to burrow themselves in their room with whatever may be lurking in their medicine cabinet. And while some people want to call him a Midwestern Syd Barrett, that comparison requires a total lack of regard for oneself that is not Jorma, he's really more like the Midwestern John Lennon. Completely in love with the power and love and eccentricities inherent to rock and roll. Jorma's music is incredibly personal, almost bare admissions of guilt and inward-loooking apologies. Everything is a contradiction within Jorma, he's a liar, but yet honest because he admits he's a liar. Jorma's live performances are rare, memorable, and not to be missed. Odawas are nicking all over the place: from Randy Newman's plain-spoken grandeur or Beach Boy story-telling or Angelo Badalamanti's cheesy romanticism or Charles Ives' avant-garde ear or Art Garfunkel's "presence-of-a-blue-whale" harmonies. They have obvious influences of course - who doesn't? - Spacemen 3, early Sonic Youth, La Monte Young, Terry Riley, the Velvet Underground, 13th Floor Elevators, Pere Ubu when they were dangerous; these are obvious ones, but so are bands like Section 25 and Joy Division. Their silvery, slithering melodic fabric has no seam, everything lies down together in a psychedelic rock & roll orgy of acid-guzzled, dark-thrummed bliss. Renegades to traditional song structure, Indian Jewelry mix drum machine, noise, percussion, loops, dance beats, guitar, keyboards, scraps of metal, and other sounds into an unpredictable mash of aural delights, drones, and melody. RIYL: music based in cowboy motorik, hyperliterary chants and magical realism, concrete sound, endless drones, pre-cognitive dissonance, mesmerism, and atavistic junk.
