Brrr... its cold. Hope you dug out your coat and hat and scarf and gloves. We have been busy stocking up on holiday treats for you and yours. In the next couple weeks you will be seeing special emails from us consisting of our holiday gift ideas as well as our year end lists, because we care (and also because its a very very slow time for new releases). So yeah, come get some gifts (if you are into that), see a show (Psychic Ills, Indian Jewelry, Tamar this coming sunday!), and bask in the seasonal glow. Here's some new stuff: Select New Releases for 12/05/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Botch - 061502 CD/DVD (Hydrahead) ................................................................... Seattle, WA's Botch was at the forefront of a near revolution in sound in heavy music. A virulent strain of progressive, underground, and sometimes violent heavy metal-infused guitar histrionics steeped deeply in hardcore punk scene aesthetics and the much touted DIY. ethic, with many that community's lowest common denominator, tough-guy minded inflections thankfully absent. 061502 is Botch's final live performance. Possibly the tightest, hottest, sweetest show ever. Under the white-hot blaze of the work lights, complete with bonus commentary, all your favorite jams; all those unstoppable riffs, a full-length live CD, and a pile of bonus DVD material. David Daniell - Coastal CD (Table of the Elements) ................................................................... Daniell is the head of both of composer Rhys Chatham's current ensembles, he's the lead guitarist in Jonathan Kane's rollicking band February, he performs regularly in a duo with Tortoise's Doug McCombs, he's collaborated with a Who's Who of today's finest, including Tim Barnes, Thurston Moore, and Loren Connors, and his guitar work with his own band, San Agustin, is the stuff of which fleeting blues-drone dreams are made. "Coastal" is a focused synthesis of influences. Rooted in blues, American minimalism, and post-punk ideologies, Daniell's guitar playing is always inspired; when fused with his intricate electro-acoustic compositions, the results are breathtaking. I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness - S/T CDEP (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... Initially released in 2003 by Emperor Jones and produced by Britt Daniel of Spoon, I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness' eponymous debut perfectly captures the band's strong pop-sensibility also found on their debut long-player Fear Is On Our Side from earlier this year. Included among the EP's five tracks is the live favorite and venerable set closer "Your Worst Is Your Best" which features dueling vocals over a chiming rhodes and epic guitar lines. Okkervil River - The President's Dead 12" (Jagjaguwar) ................................................................... The first release by Okkervil River since 2005's masterful Black Sheep Boy project. Locked in the grooves of this limited-edition vinyl-only release is what might be Okkervil River's most accessible and most contentious song, "The President's Dead." An alternative historical fiction camouflaged as a folk anthem tarted up as a pop single that never was, "The President's Dead" empathetically depicts the shock felt by a young Republican upon hearing news of an assassination over the radio, its lyrics shifting sneakily from images of public horror to those of private tenderness as its music performs a similarly schizoid leap. Psychic Ills - Early Violence CD (Social Registry) ................................................................... This is a compilation of their first two 2003 releases, "Mental Violence I" and "Mental Violence II". Both were previously issued on vinyl in scant numbers and disappeared until now. Also included are two tracks from around that time: "Highway Of Death" (previously unreleased) and "Red-Split" (previously only available as a track with the magazine Galactic Zoo Dossier). This material captures the formative days of the band, who've since released their acclaimed full-length "Dins". Sinoia Caves - The Enchanter Persuaded CD (Brah) ................................................................... Sinoia Caves is another name for the analog synth wizard Jeremy Schmidt, who is also a principal member of the critically-lauded, maximal-rock band called Black Mountain. The Enchanter Persuaded is his solo debut full-length. It is an ambient psych masterpiece, bringing to mind, as one writer puts it, "the warmth and majestic epic swales" of Florian Fricke's Popul Vuh plus a "little Rick Wakeman and Kraftwerk." Songs of Green Pheasant - Aerial Days CD (Fat Cat) ................................................................... Duncan Sumpner, a 30-year-old artist / teacher from Sheffield, UK released his self-titled debut album on FatCat in 2005, and drew widespread praise, gaining admiration from Devendra Banhart, Mum, and Vetiver. What emerged on that record was something fragile, yet coherent and utterly charming. With a warm cloudy depth, sweet melodies and some gorgeous vocal harmonising, it was a set of simply beautiful, beautifully sung and played songs. Where the debut was tagged as yet another neo-folk release, its sphere of reference lay closer to an uneven lineage of artists like Butterfly Child, Talk Talk / Mark Hollis, Pan American, Simon and Garfunkel, Flying Saucer Attack, Jewelled Antler Collective, Richard Youngs, and Galaxie 500. To Rococo Rot - Taken From Vinyl CD (Staubgold) ................................................................... Taken From Vinyl is comprised of 12 rare, vinyl-only tracks taken from To Rococo Rot's out-of-print releases on Fat Cat, Sub Pop, Domino and City Slang, plus the video for "Telema" directed by Sebastian Kutscher. Maybe it was just a coincidence that the first artistic statement from To Rococo Rot in 1995 had been a sound installation, in which record players were driven by power drills. The dubplates specially produced for this occasion were played both ways. A short time later, their first album was released by Kitty-Yo as a picture disc. VA - Desperate Man Blues DVD & CD (Dust to Digital) ................................................................... A compilation of songs as featured in Dust-to-Digital's Desperate Man Blues DVD, chronicling the amazing life in music of Joe Bussard (founder of Fonotone Records). Blues. Gospel. Jazz. Hillbilly. The late 1920s was the Big Bang of the music industry. King of record collectors Joe Bussard tells the story of "America's real music" with passionate enthusiasm in his own inimitable style. The film has an outstanding soundtrack featuring artists Charley Patton, Son House, The Carter Family, Uncle Dave Macon, Blind Willie McTell and a roster of other roots musicians. VA - How Low Can You Go? 3CD (Dust to Digital) ................................................................... Not so long ago, the string bass stood tall and proud in every musical aggregation throughout the land, from tuxedoed symphony ensembles to tipsy Calypso bands to honkytonkers in oil-field dives, from elegantly gelled tango orchestras to jazz combos in unspeakable speak-easys to methed-out rockabilly trios right off some flatbed. But somewhere along the line, the upright acoustic bass was snatched from its hallowed place atop the sedans and show-stages and relegated to the trash-heap of history in favor of Leo Fender's sleek electric cousin, plugged in to compete with amplified guitar and drums. A 3CD box set with 96-page book and featuring original recordings from 1925-1941. From the legendary archival label Dust-To-Digital (that previously brought the world the beyond-elaborate Goodbye, Babylon and Fonotone Records boxsets). ................................................................... They have obvious influences of course - who doesn't? - Spacemen 3, early Sonic Youth, La Monte Young, Terry Riley, the Velvet Underground, 13th Floor Elevators, Pere Ubu when they were dangerous; these are obvious ones, but so are bands like Section 25 and Joy Division. Their silvery, slithering melodic fabric has no seam, everything lies down together in a psychedelic rock & roll orgy of acid-guzzled, dark-thrummed bliss. Renegades to traditional song structure, Indian Jewelry mix drum machine, noise, percussion, loops, dance beats, guitar, keyboards, scraps of metal, and other sounds into an unpredictable mash of aural delights, drones, and melody. RIYL: music based in cowboy motorik, hyperliterary chants and magical realism, concrete sound, endless drones, pre-cognitive dissonance, mesmerism, and atavistic junk.
