Select New Releases for 12/12/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Everything, Now! / Everthus the Deadbeats split LP (Standard) ................................................................... Much delayed, but finally here and with a great cover to boot. Featuring three new Everything, Now! songs that are unreleased, and won't come out on anything else. The three Everthus the Deadbeats tunes are from their upcoming full-length, also on Standard Recordings. Ghostface Killah - More Fish CD (Def Jam) ................................................................... The Staten Island native, Ghostface Killah, part of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan, is apart of a dying breed of NYC rappers that shouldered the hip-hop load during the early 90's and ran with the torch that their forefathers passed on to them. With 10+ years— now considered an old head in the game and a number of critically acclaimed albums, Ghost intends on proving he can still "show these youngns how its s'posed to be done." Sonic Youth - The Destroyed Room: B-Sides and Rarities CD (Geffen) ................................................................... The album brings together tracks from throughout the band's career - focusing on tracks previously available only on vinyl, limited-release compilations, or as b-sides to international singles. Remastered here for the first time, it's a chance for fans to complete their Sonic Youth collection with pristine versions of tracks they'd been going nuts trying to find on their own. They asked for it... and now they're getting it. Mojo - January 2007 ................................................................... Landlocked is now an exclusive retailer for Mojo magazine, one of the greatest music magazines from the UK. And get this, not only do we have the magazine, but we also have the fantastic CDs that are always bundled with it. This issue features a huge Bob Dylan spread, Brian Wilson and an Arcade Fire preview. We are only getting a handful of these a month so let us know if we need to order more. Wax Poetics Journal #20 - Lee "Scratch" Perry ................................................................... Five years strong. For their 20th Issue, they pay tribute to Jamaican-music pioneer Lee "Scratch" Perry and members of the Memphis musical family, Eightball & MJG. Don't let the tagline fool you: Wax Poetics is hip-hop, jazz, funk, soul, reggae, boogaloo, blues, tropicalia, disco, doo-wop, cumbia, dancehall, fusion, salsa, samba and beyond. We have back issues of this amazing mag that is essential for any lover of deep grooves. The Wire magazine - December - The Melvins w/ Wiretapper 16 CD ................................................................... The Wire is an independent, monthly music magazine dedicated to informed, intelligent coverage of a wide range of progressive, adventurous and non-mainstream musics. The magazine was founded in 1982, primarily as a jazz and New Music magazine, with a brief to "unravel the mysteries of music and musicians for those who look for fundamental answers about the nature of music...". They seek out the best current musics in, and between, all genres; and is committed to investigating music's past as well as its present and future. Many amazing backissues also available! We have three models, depending on how much you adore the person you are buying for - the t.50 is a belt drive introductory model for $100 (no cartridge), the t.60 is an intro level direct drive turntable and is $150 (no cartridge), the t.80 is an introductory level DJ grade turntable with plenty of bells and whistles for someone who just wants a really nice home set-up, it is $250 (cartridge included). Stanton Cartridges ................................................................... So that special someone has a turntable but boy do they ever need a new needle! Easy enough, we have a spread of replacement cartridges, from $20 - $70. You'll probably want to get one of these if you buy one of the two cheaper turntables as they do not come with a needle. Yup. Discwasher Record Cleaning Kit ................................................................... Your honeybabe has a turntable they love and maybe spends too much time cleaning their records and not enough time with you? Get this little kit and help speed up the cleaning process. Includes a wooden brush and cleaning fluid. LP Shelf ................................................................... Hidden back by our vinyl accessory area we have a pile of boxes containing what is described to be Laserdisc storage, but they also perfectly fit records, of course. We have one on display and they get built pretty quickly. Easily stackable, they can also hold over 100 LPs each. Ho-Ho-Holiday Gift Guide Pt. 2 - Box Sets ------------------------------------------------------------------ Life Less Lived: The Gothic Box 4CD (Rhino) ................................................................... We all knew one of those kids: big, messy hair; black clothes; makeup on the weekends; surly demeanor with everyone but their friends. And what bonded them all? Goth music - dark, arty, dramatic, epic, apocalyptic. It gave focus and refuge during those formative years. In usual Rhino fashion, it's lovingly designed (the slipcase is a faux-leather corset!), with an extensive booklet that will answer all of your questions about goth. They include the biggies, less well-known bands, and bands that weren't necessarily goth every goth I knew loved them. There's even an essay for those new to the scene. Go on, break out those velvet vests and pointy boots and put this on, it's still amazingly vibrant stuff. Fonotone Records 1956-1969 5CD (Dust to Digital) ................................................................... Massive set of American Primitive music unearthed for the first time (in various styles: Jug Band, Country, Old Time, Blues and Bluegrass), recorded and documented by Joe Bussard's 78-RPM Fonotone label, 1956-1969 - not one track previously on CD before. Incredible package featuring 131 tracks over 5 discs, 160-page perfect-bound book, 17 full-color postcards, 3 record label reproductions in souvenir folder and a nickel-plated Fonotone Records bottle opener - all packaged in a deluxe cigar box. Master reel-to-reel tapes, unplayed for decades but still pristine, were painstakingly remastered; forgotten Kodak slides in old cigar boxes were dusted off and retouched; and musicians of all stripes who had disappeared more than 35 years ago were tracked down. Their stories, and the story of Fonotone, the last 78-RPM record label in the land, are told here with words, pictures and music. Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music 6CD (Smithsonian Folkways) ................................................................... This impressive and fun musical document is still sending out shock waves almost 50 years after its original 1952 vinyl release. The Smithsonian's 6CD reissue is painstakingly researched, annotated, and packaged. Unlike field recorders, eccentric filmmaker/collector/musicologist Harry Smith assembled the Anthology from commercially released (though obscure) 78 rpm discs issued between 1927 and 1935. Its broad scope - from country blues to Cajun social music to Appalachian murder ballads - was monumentally influential, setting musicians like Bob Dylan down the path to folk fandom. The White House started its own national music library with the Anthology; anyone with more than a passing interest in American roots music should do the same. Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the 1st Psychedelic Era, 1965-68 4CD (Rhino) ................................................................... An elaboration on the 1972 double LP, which is included in its original sequence, this set piles on dozens more great moments of inspiration, guts, chutzpah, and sometimes sheer commercial calculation. How else to explain the advice "Look at yourself" from the likes of the Strawberry Alarm Clock, whose idea of mind expansion seems limited to putting together two very vaguely related nouns--"Incense and Peppermints"--so their swinging Farfisa-led track will have something, anything, for verbal content? There's loads of such wisdom on display here, prefab and otherwise, usually delivered as rabidly as possible. Children of Nuggets: ... from the 2nd Psychedelic Era - 1976-96 4CD (Rhino) ................................................................... It would take thousands of dollars to hoard the most coveted songs from the eighties' top secret power pop bands, garage combos and post-new wave throngs into one collection. Or you can let Rhino do the legwork. These 4 discs scour all sides of the ponds to capture the vitality and innovation of mostly 1980-'85, introducing (or reintroducing) to-be-influential bands like SF's Flamin' Groovies, NY's Raybeats, UK's Soft Boys, Australia's the Church and Sweden's Nomads. Where else can you find XTC spin-off Dukes of Stratosphear, the La's "There She Goes" and the Bangles a half-decade prior to their manic Monday, along with the Cramps, the Plimsouls, the db's and the Bevis Frond in a single shebang—and with Rhino's ample, informative, transcendent liner notes, to boot? Ho-Ho-Holiday Gift Guide Pt. 3 - Holiday Tunes ------------------------------------------------------------------ Sufjan Stevens - Songs for Christmas 5CD (Asthmatic Kitty) ................................................................... Recording traditional favorites alongside unique originals, over the course of five years, Stevens has constructed this collection of songs. Newly remixed and remastered with Christmas stickers, liner notes, short stories and an animated music video track. El Vez - Noelvezsi CD (Poptones) ................................................................... Because Elvis has become an international institution that can communicate across national and cultural boundaries, it comes as no surprise that El Vez, the self proclaimed "Mexican Elvis", has come along. El Vez, aka Robert Lopez, has been kicking around the LA underground music scene for nearly 20 years. He first appeared in the early LA punk band the Zeros and then played in Catholic Discipline. The best cultural reference points to help describe an El Vez show are the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, a Tom Jones Las Vegas gig, the LSD episode of Dragnet, and Elvis Presley's '68 comeback special. His songs are littered with references to the Zapatistas and other Mexican revolutionaries. Now hear his spin on all your favorite holiday classics. Aimee Mann - One More Drifter in the Snow CD (Superego) ................................................................... Grammy winner and Oscar nominee Aimee's first Christmas album is a collection of holiday classics and two original, beautiful, and bittersweet songs written by Mann and Michael Penn. Reminiscent of classic albums of the 40's and 50's, but without any retro kitsch. Like Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, and Peggy Lee, Aimee Mann captures the emotional beauty of Christmas. Grant Lee Phillips provides the theatrical narration on "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." VA - Where Will You Be Christmas Day? CD (Dust to Digital) ................................................................... Just as Goodbye, Babylon showed the many sides of gospel music, Where Will You Be Christmas Day? shows many sides of Christmas - from Jesus born in the manger to Leroy Carr spending the holiday in jail. Some of the artists featured include Alabama Sacred Harp Singers, Butterbeans and Susie, Fiddlin' John Carson, Cotton Top Mountain Sanctified Singers, Lightnin' Hopkins, Los Jibaros, Kansas City Kitty, Lead Belly, Lord Executor, Maddox Brothers and Rose, and Bessie Smith. Together they provide a compelling contrast to the commercialized Christmas we know today. Rogers & Rogers Christmas CD ................................................................... You've seen their band, Busman's Holiday, playing their hearts out at the weekend farmer's market, or maybe you spied them charming passers-by on their favorite stoop outside of the Jiffy Treet on Kirkwood. Now, brothers Addison and Lewis Rogers have put together a special holiday treat for everyone. A bigger than life size Santa awaits you within the walls of Landlocked to entice you to buy this very limited edition treat, its sweet as candy, except without the bellyache. Will Schaff Portfolio (Le Mano) ................................................................... Scratchboard images by artist William Schaff (better known for his CD artwork with Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Okkervil River, Kid Dakota, and others...) in an insanely beautiful package. 10 offset prints (on 110# felt paper, suitable for framing) in a hand-made portfolio. Limited to 500 copies, signed and numbered by the artist. Black Dice & Frank Rothenberg - Gore ................................................................... Music enthusiasts may consider Gore, the first book from Black Dice - an extension of their highly visual melange of sound, performance, and art - a 5th album, but it's something else entirely. The band grew out of the infamous Providence art and noise scene in the late 90s, and has since drawn acclaim in New York and worldwide. Their longtime friend, photographer Jason Frank Rothenberg, has documented their work for some time. His images, often reworked and collaged by the band to illustrate their tastes and sensibilities, form the foundation of the book. In collaborating on Gore, the band's creative process parallel its musical one, each member making use of different skills in individual contributions that inform and build on one another. The resulting mix of found images, photographs, collages, and altered documentation explores the full integration of their creative processes and offers a glimpse into daily life in the genesis of their sonic persona. Chunklet Magazine ................................................................... Earlier this past year, Chunklet guru Henry Owings visited Landlocked and joked with people and showed some of his crazy and hilarious film collection. We still have copies of a few of his semi-regular mag as well as some of the DVDs he showed. Get em quick! Chuckle the holidaze away! 33 1/3 Book Series ................................................................... Series editor David Barker started 33 1/3 to "create an outlet for different ways of writing about music, in book form." The series is equally eclectic in subject, authorship and approach. Subjects range from The Clash's London Calling to James Brown's Live At The Apollo to The Stone Roses' self-titled debut; authors are not only professional critics, but also musicians and academics; and formal approaches run the gamut from extended essays and serious critical analyses to interviews, encyclopedias, and novellas. DVDs ................................................................... We've been slowly amassing a number of DVDs that you don't find at your average movie outlet for sale. They are conveniently located on our magazine/book shelf. You will find live shows from the Pixes, PJ Harvey, Jeff Tweedy, Japanther and Neko Case; documentaries on the Minutemen, Luna, and Townes Van Zandt; cult classics like Heavy Metal Parking Lot and Thunderbolt Pagoda; field video recordings from Sublime Frequencies; as well as collections from Einsturzende Neubauten, Alice Cooper, Factory Records, and much much more. ...................................................................
