It's finally snowing in Bloomington. Finally. Enough of this eerie warm winter weather. Makes me think of all the polar bears drowning about now. Release-wise this week, think of this as the light, powdery dusting before the all-out blizzard of awesomeness that happens next week. Seriously, check out the list of stuff coming out next week. It will give you the chills. Still, some interesting and/or limited stuff in this week. Check it. Select New Arrivals for 01/16/07 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Frank Black - Christmass CD+DVD (Cooking Vinyl) ................................................................... The limited edition Christmass, Frank Black's latest release, is being offered exclusively through independent stores. This CD/DVD release is comprised of live acoustic recordings from Summer 2006, along with five studio tracks recorded partly in hotel rooms and partly at Planet of Sound Studios in Hartford. There is also a DVD with selections from one of the live acoustic shows, so in total, there are seven new songs. The project was produced by long-time Pixies' camp member Myles Mangino. David Gilmour - Arnold Layne 10" (EMI) ................................................................... Pink Floyd guitarist/vocalist David Gilmour, with help from David Bowie and Richard Wright, pays tribute the band's founder, Syd Barrett, who passed away in July of 2006 by covering two of Syd's songs. The first is the early Floyd tune, 'Arnold Layne', a song the band recorded before Gilmour joined. The second cover is a solo Barrett track 'Dark Globe', originally from Syd's The Madcap Laughs album (which was produced by Gilmour). ***We only got a few of these, and I'm not counting on being able to get any more. So, speak up if you want one. First come, first served. Damien Jurado - Gathered in Song [CD reissue] (Made in Mexico) ................................................................... Originally released in 1999. Minimal copies were pressed, and as a result this EP has become the most sought-after recording of Jurado's career. Recorded live to a two-track tape machine in a room full of friends, the performance is raw, revealing, stark, and intimate. The reviews for this release were outstanding, and most critics favored it over his debut and even releases that came after. Includes five previously unreleased demos. Thurston Moore - Flipped Out Bride [CD reissue] (Blossoming Noise) ................................................................... Originally released as part of the PYGMY series & limited to 500 copies on blue marbled vinyl this reissue comes housed in a CD digipak featuring artwork by Kim Gordon & an added poem from Thurston. Two extended tracks of guitar drone from Sonic Youth's heavy petter. Ponytail - Kamehameha CD (Creative Capitalism) ................................................................... Wow, if you saw this band at Bear's Place last wednesday you already know you need this. Deerhoof comparisons aside, this band of Baltimore weirdos paint neon glow speed riffs atop feral feline moans and howls. Its a jupiter jump full of kool-aid junkies with pocket knives. New signings to Monitor, their next full-length is sure to bust out, so get in now, on the ground floor. Klaus Schulze - CD Reissue Series (Inside Out) ................................................................... Klaus Schulze first attracted attention as a member of the German progressive rock band, Tangerine Dream. Following the release of their debut LP, Electronic Meditation, he departed for a solo career. Klaus' recorded work typically features extended pieces sometimes filling an entire album built around computer-generated synthesizers and other specially programmed electronic effects. Klaus Schulze remains a cult figure in the United States, where the bulk of his prolific output has until now been available only through the import bins. He is widely considered an avant-garde mainstay as well as a founding father of both the new-age space music and electronica genres. Sally Shapiro - Disco Romance CD/LP (Diskokaine) ................................................................... She became well-known in disco communities earlier this year with 'I'll By By Your Side,' which was rated 4.5 out of 5 by Pitchfork and was called an 'utterly perfect slice of italo synth-pop' in Vice Magazine. Sally (whose real name is a secret) is so shy that she refuses to record a music video, perform her songs live, let herself be photographed by someone she doesn't know, or even let her producer be in the same room when she's recorded. The deal is that we have an album full of italo disco inspired pop anthems! Obviously the sound is inspired by Italian 80s disco, and it's in the circles of I-f, Metro Area, Serge Clone, Daniel Wang, Glimmer Twins, and Lindstrom where she'll find her fans. Tivol - Early Teeth CD (Holy Mountain) ................................................................... Tivol plays a throbbing, violent and aggressive strain of acid rock that has nothing to do with subtlety. Their already hypnotic material is further enhanced by screamed vocals that do not seem to emanate from this earth. Comprised of four tracks from two extremely limited edition CDRs released on the 267 Lattajjaaa and Time-Lag labels, Holy Mountain gives this material a proper CD release with vastly improved sound quality and charming new artwork silkscreened by the talented hands and mind of the Free Porcupine Society's Robert Fisk. Scream Loud! - The Fenton Story CD/LP (Music Maniac) ................................................................... Sixty-one cuts of mid-sixties Michigan teen punk by thirty-two bands. Many tracks are presented for the very first time. With bands such as The Jujus (!), The Plagues (!!), and Tonto & the Renagades (!!!), need we say more? Yes. Just this: Double CD and super deluxe, triple vinyl format. And probably like many prog-rock bands, they met in video production class. They shared dreams of loud rooms, cracked amps, and raging, sweaty crowds. Who or what was to hold them back from grasping out, from "living the dream?" Most importantly was that, unlike many bands, two of the members were students and two were teachers. And that the four hanging out in rock bars together was not exactly approved after-school development. Teenage kicks delivered by actual teenagers: Two recent high school grads bash out joyously hormonal power pop behind a frontman who was recently their teacher. Like School of Rock with more Kinks albums on the syllabus. Their combination of poppy hooks and the slightly psychedelic sounding bridge sum up to be basically perfect. MP3s: http://www.prettyactivity.com/mp3s/thehoundsofwar.mp3s ** HELP US CELEBRATE OUR ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY WITH THIS AWESOME SHOW ** Saturday, March 3rd @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ------------------------------------------------------------------ CHARALAMBIDES (Kranky) - http://www.wholly-other.com/ PRIMORDIAL UNDERMIND (ex-Crystallized Movements, Vienna, Austria) - http://www.myspace.com/primordialundermind THE TEN THOUSAND THINGS (B'ton) - http://myspace.com/things10thousand To say that the words "unique" and "singular" are over-used in describing music is to state the obvious. To apply these words to the sounds created by the various duo/trio configurations of the Texas group Charalambides over the last decade plus would be understatement. To be sure there are numerous antecedents to their music; to deny this of any artist‘s work would be akin to saying that they are deaf. But they have surely broken new ground in the primitive / folk / mystic / improv / psych valley in which they toil. As Marcus Boon wrote in The Wire; "...here is a truly 21st century experimental ethnic music that explores quietness and stasis... in the same way that musicians in the second half of the 20th century discovered amplification, noise and speed." Primordial Undermind is led by ex-Crystalized Movements guitarist Eric Arn. Active for more than a decade in different forms and in different cities. Dark, spiritual, yin-and-yang paisley... These aren't just burnouts playing loud, distorted psych. They're paranoid burnouts playing loud, distorted psych. Behold the swirling madness and tranquility. From streams of molten electric guitar sputtering geysers of fluid ectoplasm into the air, to high desert country influenced elements left to blister and bleach in the sun... so utterly gorgeous in places it's like a long view of paradise. This is the second record by The Besnard Lakes, Montrealers by way of Western Canada. Their independently released previous record, Volume I, came out in 2004, and it was noticed by critics but was largely overlooked by the public at large. On both records, The Besnard Lakes have shown that they are masters of finely-honed experimental pop songs that invoke the eerie Lynchian setting as aided and abetted by the music of Julee Cruise. But, on The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse, the band throws into the mix a mad dash of Fleetwood Mac proportioned swagger and ambition. Not so incidentally, the Besnard Lakes have created a masterpiece that will resonate within all quarters, amongst critics, casual and not-so-casual rock listeners, garden variety pop fans and headphone junkies. Neil Young's Tonight's The Night is the hailstorm on the hood of The Replacements Let It Be, while distorted guitars invoke the thread and swerve of Silkworm and Dinosaur Jr. Helped along the way by Amber Webber and Josh Wells of Black Mountain, it will be hard to find a more hauntingly beautiful set of rock music than this debut. It was recorded and mixed, with the help of Black Mountaineers Wells and Matthew Camirand, in the "Karachi Vice" clubhouse, in the back of a furniture factory, amongst chicken and fish processing plants. With some of the more "inexpensive" ladies of the night scattered about, it captures the bottlenecked frenzy of their much-loved live show. There, each night, these grown-up kids at heart fall over, get right back up, cry on shoulders and fold the day in halves, watching the sun come up over the dashboard. MP3s: http://www.scjag.com/mp3/jag/dugout.mp3 Monday, April 16th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ------------------------------------------------------------------ CASIOTONE FOR THE PAINFULLY ALONE (Chicago, Tomlab) - http://www.cftpa.org/ RIVULETS - http://www.rivulets.net/ Casiotone for the Painfully Alone is the musical alias of film school drop-out Owen Ashworth. Over his first few albums Ashworth defined a hybrid strain of raw, emotional, and very homemade synth pop that was instantly recognizable as his own - claustrophobic 2-minute character studies shuddered with reverbed beats, blown-out chords, and simple but infectous melodies, all layered beneath Ashworth's sometimes funny but always heartbreaking lyrics. Now the sound of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone has grown to include pianos, organs, strings, flutes, drums, and pedal steel guitars in addition to Ashworth's signature electronics and drum machines. Nathan Amundson began Rivulets in 1999, when his debut was issued by Chair Kickers' Union, the Duluth label run by Low. Often driven only by voice or quiet guitar, Rivulets was frighteningly gentle, yet genuinely powerful. The brooding love songs of Mark Kozelek's Red House Painters were an apt comparison, as were the acute, windswept soundscapes of Iceland's Sigur Ros. Most often, the music suggested the isolation and odd beauty found at the center of an iced-over lake in the middle of winter. On You Are My Home, Amundson is joined by the none too shabby musical guests Codeine's Chris Brokaw, Jessica Bailiff, Christian Frederickson of Rachel's, Boxhead Ensemble's Fred Lonberg-Holm and Bob Weston of Shellac and Mission Of Burma. Their combined guitars, keyboards, strings and horns work together with Amundson's heartbroken voice magically to create a deep dark melancholia.
