A few quick notes before we get down the the new releases this week. First off, don't forget about the EVAN HYDZIK, VOLLMAR, BRONZE FLOAT show coming up this Saturday. Hydzik has been a member of the amazing, and amazingly underrated, Chicago outfit Static Films. Come check it out. Things will get underway around 8 p.m. We're selling tickets to two upcoming shows at Rhinos All-Ages Club (located just around the corner from us in Bloomington). Saturday, February 3rd there is what should be a great hiphop show with P.O.S., Mac Lethal, Jetone and Stak. Sunday, February 25th brings the comedy-like stylings Neil Hamburger back to Bloomington. If you missed his now-legendary show a few years back at the dearly departed Cellar Lounge, trust me, you don't want to miss the sequel. He is joined this time by Bloomington's punk rock answer to the James Gang, The Coke Dares, as well as Thin Fevers. Two very special pre-order deals to highlight: first, to celebrate Rjd2's new album 'The Third Hand' (on XL) we are offering any customer who pre-orders the new album the ability to stream the album before street date AND they will receive a free digital EP including three exclusive tracks. Not only that, but you will be given a chance to enter a drawing for Rjd2 to DJ their party. Also, The Ponys (on Matador records) are offering the following to anyone who pre-orders through us their upcoming album, Turn The Lights Out: Stream of the album, exclusive b-side download, exclusive live show download (recorded live at Schubas on 1/12/07, and an exclusive poster designed by Nathan Jerde of The Ponys (SUPPLIES LIMITED). To get in on either of these deals, just send your email address to jason@landlockedmusic.com. When you do, please put either RJD2 or Ponys in the subject line. Also, and finally, we've got a handful of Shins 7''s left, so if you want one, act soon or cry later. You get one free with the purchase of their new CD or LP. BTW, our money is on Bud Light this year. They're due. Now, on to the new stuff! Select New Arrivals for 01/30/07 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lily Allen - Alright Still (Capitol) ................................................................... Possessed of a feisty wit and taste for urban storytelling that should see her compared to Mike "The Streets" Skinner, these 11 tracks of sunshine-friendly reggae-pop cover topics including frustrating potential closing-time suitors, being happy when your ex is having a bad time, and having a little brother who likes a bit of a smoke--and not just of the tobacco variety. Wisely, however, Allen doesn't let the grittiness of the subject matter tarnish the golden pop suss of the songs, a suite of gleaming productions by names including Mark Ronson and Gwen Stefani collaborator Greg Kurstin that take inspiration from the lighter end of reggae and vintage rocksteady. Beirut - Lon Gisland CDEP/12'' (Ba Da Bing) ................................................................... One of the sleeper hits of 2006, Beirut's Gulag Orkestar came out of nowhere to sell tens of thousands of copies in a matter of months and wound up on countless critics' year-end lists (including ours). As a stopgap before recording a new full-length in fall - and as a way to capture some current songs being performed at shows - the 8-member band checked into Sea Side Studios in Brooklyn to record Lon Gisland. These are the first studio recordings made by the entire group, and a sampling of the most recent songs by orkestar leader Zach Condon. Lon Gisland features four new tunes and a full band reworking of Gulag's 'Scenic World.' Bracken - We Know About the Need CD/LP (Anticon) ................................................................... Bracken is a musical project spinning in a loose and ill-defined orbit around founder member Chris Adams. In another life, Chris, along with his brother Richard are known as co-captains of the good ship Hood. In this latest incarnation we see a side-step/stumble into a puzzling soundworld of future pop, analogue tape trickery, avant drone, loose dub flourishes, hip hop pacing and clattering drums. Busdriver - Roadkill Overcoat CD/LP (Epitaph) ................................................................... Busdriver is that rare artist who brings so much flair and originality to his music that he's transformed a whole genre with his intricate assault of complex rhymes and vocal delivery. On this release, he delivers synth-laden, post-techno hooks and indie-pop moves provided by underground heroes, Boom Bip & DJ Nobody. He strings together pop culture reference points, cryptic wordplay, and gallant wit, with a wide musical palette of pop grandeur, psychedelic hip-hop, and minimal beats, capturing listeners with his most undeniably catchy release yet. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Some Loud Thunder (self) ................................................................... Clap Your Hands Say Yeah decided not to wait the perfunctory two years in between records to release their sophomore effort "Some Loud Thunder," but to to release it as soon as it was ready. Eager to prove there's more to the band than just a business story, "Some Loud Thunder" demonstrates just how far this band has come since the release of their debut. This is not CYHSY Part II - this is a departure record, a record that will stand the test of time and critics alike. Deerhunter - Cryptograms (Kranky) ................................................................... Deerhunter began in 2001 with the ambition of fusing the lulling hypnotic states induced by ambient and minimalist music with the klang and propulsion of garage rock. The band has weathered chaotic line-up changes, the death of a member, and much discouragement. Their live performances almost always leave audiences polarized, and have been referred to by Karen O as bordering on "a religious experience." Cryptograms is the 2nd album offering from Deerhunter, and their first for Kranky. The album took almost 2 years to finish and was the product of emotional, physical, and financial strain on the group, an album that finds the band shifting from discordant catharsis, and forming a sonic identity that completely expresses the place from which they have arrived. Early Years - The Early Years (Beggars) ................................................................... The chilling, psychedelia-drenched self-titled debut from this UK band is a dense mix of the trio's influences: Spiritualized, Mogwai, Television, Neu, and Tortoise. A sound that lies somewhere between their joint love for ambient noise, motorik beats, drones, feedback, harmony, and melody. They've been a fixture of late night MTV2 rotation, and recently created the soundtrack for a Nike World Cup commercial. The US version of this album contains a bonus disc with four additional tracks and two videos. Gandalf - Gandalf 2 (Sundazed) ................................................................... Yes, THAT Gandalf. The exotic, mindbending sounds of Gandalf have long been one of the great lost treasures of the first psychedelic era. Featuring the breathy vocals and lysergic guitar of Peter Sando, the band's only album, a delight from start to finish, has generated a fervent demand for more of the same. Gandalf 2, is a return trip to the band's garden of earthly delights. A thorough search of Sando's tape vault revealed a fabulous stash of spellbinding demos and acetates, unheard for decades! 13 tracks, two of them live. Catherine Howe - What A Beautiful Place (Numero Group) ................................................................... The first ever compact disc issue of Catherine Howe's brilliant debut album. Produced by legendary jazz pianist Bobby Scott, the album is a pastoral blend of English countryside folk and London orchestral pop, not unlike Bryter Layter or North Star Grassman And The Ravens. Originally released on Reflection Records in 1971, the much sought after album disappeared before ever hitting the racks. Booklet includes half a dozen unpublished photos and an anotated history of the album's brief existence. The fully remastered album includes an unearthed bonus track originally intended to be included on the album. Josh Ritter - Live at the Record Exchange EP (V2) ................................................................... A live EP featuring six songs recorded at the Record Exchange in Boise, Idaho. Besides live versions of three album tracks, there are two songs that have never been released as "studio versions" - "Bandits" (a Ritter original) and a John Prine cover - "Daddy's Little Pumpkin." Also included is a live recording of "Peter Killed The Dragon" – the studio version of this song has only been available online. Josh Rouse - She's Spanish, I'm American CDEP (Bedroom Classics/Nettwerk Records) ................................................................... On the heels of his most recent album, Subtitulo, Josh Rouse forms a new side project featuring his girlfriend (artist Paz Suay) under the name, "She's Spanish, I'm American". The five-song EP features playful duets between Josh and Paz as they share stories from their adventures together. The songs give listeners an upbeat, refreshing sound, full of light-hearted lyrics laced with lots of romance. Zozobra - Harmonic Tremors (Hydrahead) ................................................................... Taking its name from the 50-foot effigy burned every year by a hysterical mob during the Fiestas De Santa Fe in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Zozobra is the brainchild of Cave In/Old Man Gloom bassist Caleb Scofield. "Harmonic Tremors" deftly traverses the far-flung fields of transcendental space rock and explosive dirge metal with alternately snarling and oscillating riffery, crippling bass quakes, and apocalyptic proclamations hurled end over end toward the cosmic unconsciousness. Saturday, February 17th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ------------------------------------------------------------------ THE SUBJECTS (NY) - http://www.thesubjects.net/ THE DELICIOUS (Bloomingtopia) - http://www.myspace.com/thedelicious PRIZZY PRIZZY PLEASE (Btown) - http://www.myspace.com/prizzyprizzyplease Like many bands, The Subjects met in high school. And probably like many prog-rock bands, they met in video production class. They shared dreams of loud rooms, cracked amps, and raging, sweaty crowds. Who or what was to hold them back from grasping out, from "living the dream?" Most importantly was that, unlike many bands, two of the members were students and two were teachers. And that the four hanging out in rock bars together was not exactly approved after-school development. Teenage kicks delivered by actual teenagers: Two recent high school grads bash out joyously hormonal power pop behind a frontman who was recently their teacher. Like School of Rock with more Kinks albums on the syllabus. Their combination of poppy hooks and the slightly psychedelic sounding bridge sum up to be basically perfect. MP3s: http://www.prettyactivity.com/mp3s/thehoundsofwar.mp3s ** HELP US CELEBRATE OUR ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY WITH THIS AWESOME SHOW ** Saturday, March 3rd @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ------------------------------------------------------------------ CHARALAMBIDES (Kranky) - http://www.wholly-other.com/ PRIMORDIAL UNDERMIND (ex-Crystallized Movements, Vienna, Austria) - http://www.myspace.com/primordialundermind THE TEN THOUSAND THINGS (B'ton) - http://myspace.com/things10thousand To say that the words "unique" and "singular" are over-used in describing music is to state the obvious. To apply these words to the sounds created by the various duo/trio configurations of the Texas group Charalambides over the last decade plus would be understatement. To be sure there are numerous antecedents to their music; to deny this of any artist's work would be akin to saying that they are deaf. But they have surely broken new ground in the primitive / folk / mystic / improv / psych valley in which they toil. As Marcus Boon wrote in The Wire; "...here is a truly 21st century experimental ethnic music that explores quietness and stasis... in the same way that musicians in the second half of the 20th century discovered amplification, noise and speed." Primordial Undermind is led by ex-Crystalized Movements guitarist Eric Arn. Active for more than a decade in different forms and in different cities. Dark, spiritual, yin-and-yang paisley... These aren't just burnouts playing loud, distorted psych. They're paranoid burnouts playing loud, distorted psych. Behold the swirling madness and tranquility. From streams of molten electric guitar sputtering geysers of fluid ectoplasm into the air, to high desert country influenced elements left to blister and bleach in the sun... so utterly gorgeous in places it's like a long view of paradise. This is the second record by The Besnard Lakes, Montrealers by way of Western Canada. Their independently released previous record, Volume I, came out in 2004, and it was noticed by critics but was largely overlooked by the public at large. On both records, The Besnard Lakes have shown that they are masters of finely-honed experimental pop songs that invoke the eerie Lynchian setting as aided and abetted by the music of Julee Cruise. But, on The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse, the band throws into the mix a mad dash of Fleetwood Mac proportioned swagger and ambition. Not so incidentally, the Besnard Lakes have created a masterpiece that will resonate within all quarters, amongst critics, casual and not-so-casual rock listeners, garden variety pop fans and headphone junkies. Neil Young's Tonight's The Night is the hailstorm on the hood of The Replacements Let It Be, while distorted guitars invoke the thread and swerve of Silkworm and Dinosaur Jr. Helped along the way by Amber Webber and Josh Wells of Black Mountain, it will be hard to find a more hauntingly beautiful set of rock music than this debut. It was recorded and mixed, with the help of Black Mountaineers Wells and Matthew Camirand, in the "Karachi Vice" clubhouse, in the back of a furniture factory, amongst chicken and fish processing plants. With some of the more "inexpensive" ladies of the night scattered about, it captures the bottlenecked frenzy of their much-loved live show. There, each night, these grown-up kids at heart fall over, get right back up, cry on shoulders and fold the day in halves, watching the sun come up over the dashboard. MP3s: http://www.scjag.com/mp3/jag/dugout.mp3 Monday, April 16th @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ------------------------------------------------------------------ CASIOTONE FOR THE PAINFULLY ALONE (Chicago, Tomlab) - http://www.cftpa.org/ RIVULETS - http://www.rivulets.net/ Casiotone for the Painfully Alone is the musical alias of film school drop-out Owen Ashworth. Over his first few albums Ashworth defined a hybrid strain of raw, emotional, and very homemade synth pop that was instantly recognizable as his own - claustrophobic 2-minute character studies shuddered with reverbed beats, blown-out chords, and simple but infectous melodies, all layered beneath Ashworth's sometimes funny but always heartbreaking lyrics. Now the sound of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone has grown to include pianos, organs, strings, flutes, drums, and pedal steel guitars in addition to Ashworth's signature electronics and drum machines. Nathan Amundson began Rivulets in 1999, when his debut was issued by Chair Kickers' Union, the Duluth label run by Low. Often driven only by voice or quiet guitar, Rivulets was frighteningly gentle, yet genuinely powerful. The brooding love songs of Mark Kozelek's Red House Painters were an apt comparison, as were the acute, windswept soundscapes of Iceland's Sigur Ros. Most often, the music suggested the isolation and odd beauty found at the center of an iced-over lake in the middle of winter. On You Are My Home, Amundson is joined by the none too shabby musical guests Codeine's Chris Brokaw, Jessica Bailiff, Christian Frederickson of Rachel's, Boxhead Ensemble's Fred Lonberg-Holm and Bob Weston of Shellac and Mission Of Burma. Their combined guitars, keyboards, strings and horns work together with Amundson's heartbroken voice magically to create a deep dark melancholia.
