I swear it wasn't snowing this morning when I put these shoes on. I had managed to ignore and miss winter until now, believe it or not. Now I must accept it. It is here and relentless. I have no choice but to shovel the walk and smile. So here it is, your feast of aural flurries. Flakes on the tongue. Soundprints on the cerebellum. Select New Arrivals for 02/06/07 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Aereogramme - My Heart Has a Wish That You Would Not Go (Sonic Unyon) ................................................................... After reemerging in North America with two releases in 2006, the Seclusion mini-album and their In The Fishtank collaboration with Isis, Scotland's Aereogramme return with their most accomplished studio effort to date. Entitled My Heart Has A Wish That You Would Not Go, Aereogramme's third full-length album is an ambitious, cinematic and beautiful beast. Trading in the sludgey, metallic heaviness that filled half of Seclusion for a more serene, pensive feel, My Heart... explores the quieter side of the group's musical landscape. Apples in Stereo - New Magnetic Wonder (Yep Roc) ................................................................... Indie-rock stalwarts The Apples In Stereo mark their first release in five years, as well as their fifth official full-length album, with New Magnetic Wonder. The first release on Yep Roc Records' joint venture with Elijah Woods' newly formed record label, Simian Records, New Magnetic Wonder was produced by Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Sebadoh, Sean Lennon) and is surely the most elaborate Apples production to date. Clocking in at 53 minutes, the album contains 14 songs, 12 additional "link tracks," and an Apples first -- the newly invented "Non-Pythagorian Music Scale" included in both digital sound files and an in-depth video description on the enhanced portion of this multimedia CD. Bloc Party - Weekend in the City (Vice) ................................................................... Bloc Party may have arrived in an outbreak of like-minded British bands set upon shooting holes in the Union Jack while knocking out a sharp post-punk soundtrack, but it didn't take long for the foursome to set itself apart from the pack. Fronted by Nigerian-born singer Kele Okereke, the group's debut, soared as much on crystal ambition as it did on ridiculously danceable pop melodies. This follow-up is darker, more cluttered, and harder to digest. That doesn't make it less striking. Exploring themes of racism, terrorism, sexuality, addiction, and death--the usual fodder for a cosmopolitan 3-day bender--Weekend in the City is an album that plays to their strengths: tempo-shifting rhythms, inventive art-rock arrangements, and lyrics that twist and turn on a whim. Dead Child - EP (Cold Sweat) ................................................................... Dead Child is a heavy metal band from Louisville, KY. Guitarist David Pajo (Slint, Zwan, Stereolab, Tortoise, Early Man, Will Oldham, Aerial M, Papa M, Pajo) and drummer Tony Bailey (Anomoanon, Lords) worked together on Pajo's solo projects Aerial M and Papa M. Bailey was in the band Crain with bassist Todd Cook (Shipping News) and the band Brothers of Conquest with vocalist Dahm. Cook had also been involved with Pajo's Papa M, as well as Matador/Touch and Go band The For Carnation with guitarist Michael McMahan. McMahan and Dahm were both members of Louisville band Starkiller, and in addition to Dead Child, both McMahan and Dahm currently play in the band Phantom Family Halo. Mick Harvey - Motion Picture Music 94-05 (Mute) ................................................................... The latest release from Mick Harvey, celebrated arranger, multi-instrumentalist, producer, film soundtrack composer and co-founder of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and The Birthday Party. This new compilation offers music from a wide spectrum of international productions including documentaries, short films and features including Lighting Fires, Chopper, Sparrow, Rien Ne Vas Plus and Frank Hurley: The Man Who Made History. Mojo Magazine - Acid + Genius = Pepper - 02/07 (Beatles cover) ................................................................... Sgt. Pepper was released 40 years ago, as MOJO looks into the drugs, the art, the history the victorian connection and the legacy of rock's greatest mindblower. Plus, a look into the making of Never Mind The Bollocks, released ten years after Sgt. Pepper. A ten-page tribute to Soul Brother Number One, The Devil in Ms Norah Jones and a free CD of Beatles psychedelic masterpiece re-recorded, starring Echo & The Bunnymen, Circulus, Fionn Regan, 747s & more. Yoko Ono - Yes, I'm a Witch (Astralwerks) ................................................................... At first glance, this looks like it might be yet another one of those records where an older cult artist is paired with a bunch of younger/ supposedly hipper musicians in efforts to add legitimacy to the younguns and street cred to said cult figure. Such is not the case with Ono's version of a collaborative hipster album, Yes, I'm A Witch. Yoko chose all the artists herself, and her choices range from predictable (Cat Power, Antony, Flaming Lips) to not (Le Tigre, Porcupine Tree, Hank Shocklee). The musicians were asked to pick elements of songs from Ono's back catalog and rework them. Most chose her distinctive vocals and created new songs using them. The results overall are surprisingly great, though it's a bit disorienting given the eclectic array of artists. Ono fans, of course, will not likely be bothered by that. Peter, Bjorn and John - Writer's Block (Almost Gold) ................................................................... Finally available in the US, Writer's Block has received amazing reviews from countless publications, appeared on what seems like everyone's best of 2006 list, and even achieved Pitchfork Best New Music status. Selling out shows left and right, Sweden's Peter, Bjorn and John are taking over the world with their angular happy pop. The domestic version of Writer's Block includes a bonus disc featuring six extra tracks. Think The Futureheads meets The Shins? Soft Circle - Full Bloom (Eastern Developments) ................................................................... Hisham Akira Bharoocha, formerly of Black Dice and Lightning Bolts debuts as Soft Circle. Full Bloom fuses the drum experiments of Boredoms, the world-psychedelia of Gang Gang Dance, and the warm intensity of My Bloody Valentine. Seven tracks of pure blissful energy. He has a successful art career and also plays with the band Pixeltan on DFA. Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter - Like, Love, Lust... (Barsuk) ................................................................... Jesse Sykes overlaps with current trends, but is completely her own artist. There are elements of alt-country, psych-folk, and singer-songwriter-troubadour, but also others that add alluring breadth to her sound, most notably in the band's penchant for drawing upon the best aspects of Haight-Ashbury ballroom sonics. Sykes has taken those sounds (which were often the best part of the era's rather feeble cowboy machismo) and added finesse, poetics, and a woman's vantage point. Her lyrics are rife with cold winds and loneliness, but never without hope, even if that element is handled by the warm glow of the music. The band is a sympathetically balanced entity with supple power and grace. Wu-Tang Clan & Friends - Unreleased (Nature Sounds) ................................................................... Wu-Tang and Friends: Unreleased, compiled and produced by the Wu-Tang Clan's DJ Mathematics, contains rare recordings, remixes and unreleased tracks, as well as outtakes from the cutting room floor that didn't make previous Wu-Tang albums. This album features Ghostface, Raekwon, GZA, Method Man, RZA, Masta Killa, U-God, Inspectah Deck, Killah Priest, Hell Razah, Shyhiem and many more! Paul Weller - Hit Parade 2DVD (Yep Roc) ................................................................... Paul Weller's Hit Parade DVD, his first ever career spanning video collection, chronicles 30 years of milestone work from one of the world's best songwriters. Two DVDs with 64 videos (one for every single on his Hit Parade box set, both live and feature), Hit Parade is a comprehensive Weller collection. From 1977-82, Weller released 6 wildly successful albums with The Jam, who still hold the UK record for most simultaneous Top 75 singles. After The Jam, Weller formed The Style Council, with whom he scored 19 consecutive hits on the UK charts. Since 92, Weller has released 8 critically acclaimed studio albums, including Stanley Road, considered one of the best British rock albums of all time. And probably like many prog-rock bands, they met in video production class. They shared dreams of loud rooms, cracked amps, and raging, sweaty crowds. Who or what was to hold them back from grasping out, from "living the dream?" Most importantly was that, unlike many bands, two of the members were students and two were teachers. And that the four hanging out in rock bars together was not exactly approved after-school development. Teenage kicks delivered by actual teenagers: Two recent high school grads bash out joyously hormonal power pop behind a frontman who was recently their teacher. Like School of Rock with more Kinks albums on the syllabus. Their combination of poppy hooks and the slightly psychedelic sounding bridge sum up to be basically perfect. MP3s: http://www.prettyactivity.com/mp3s/thehoundsofwar.mp3s ** HELP US CELEBRATE OUR ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY WITH THIS AWESOME SHOW ** Saturday, March 3rd @ 8pm @ Landlocked Music - $5 ------------------------------------------------------------------ CHARALAMBIDES (Kranky) - http://www.wholly-other.com/ PRIMORDIAL UNDERMIND (ex-Crystallized Movements, Vienna, Austria) - http://www.myspace.com/primordialundermind THE TEN THOUSAND THINGS (B'ton) - http://myspace.com/things10thousand To say that the words "unique" and "singular" are over-used in describing music is to state the obvious. To apply these words to the sounds created by the various duo/trio configurations of the Texas group Charalambides over the last decade plus would be understatement. To be sure there are numerous antecedents to their music; to deny this of any artist‘s work would be akin to saying that they are deaf. But they have surely broken new ground in the primitive / folk / mystic / improv / psych valley in which they toil. As Marcus Boon wrote in The Wire; "...here is a truly 21st century experimental ethnic music that explores quietness and stasis... in the same way that musicians in the second half of the 20th century discovered amplification, noise and speed." Primordial Undermind is led by ex-Crystalized Movements guitarist Eric Arn. Active for more than a decade in different forms and in different cities. Dark, spiritual, yin-and-yang paisley... These aren't just burnouts playing loud, distorted psych. They're paranoid burnouts playing loud, distorted psych. Behold the swirling madness and tranquility. From streams of molten electric guitar sputtering geysers of fluid ectoplasm into the air, to high desert country influenced elements left to blister and bleach in the sun... so utterly gorgeous in places it's like a long view of paradise. This is the second record by The Besnard Lakes, Montrealers by way of Western Canada. Their independently released previous record, Volume I, came out in 2004, and it was noticed by critics but was largely overlooked by the public at large. On both records, The Besnard Lakes have shown that they are masters of finely-honed experimental pop songs that invoke the eerie Lynchian setting as aided and abetted by the music of Julee Cruise. But, on The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse, the band throws into the mix a mad dash of Fleetwood Mac proportioned swagger and ambition. Not so incidentally, the Besnard Lakes have created a masterpiece that will resonate within all quarters, amongst critics, casual and not-so-casual rock listeners, garden variety pop fans and headphone junkies. When you think Land of Talk, think early Cat Power, with an extra dose of Rock. In other circles you may hear them described as a place yielding destructive Edie Brickell/Blonde Redhead mutants, PJ Harvey meets Sonic Youth, Blondie meets Crazy Horse creatures. Either as a land or a band, they will soon consume all with their warm yet fierce embrace. Neil Young's Tonight's The Night is the hailstorm on the hood of The Replacements Let It Be, while distorted guitars invoke the thread and swerve of Silkworm and Dinosaur Jr. Helped along the way by Amber Webber and Josh Wells of Black Mountain, it will be hard to find a more hauntingly beautiful set of rock music than this debut. It was recorded and mixed, with the help of Black Mountaineers Wells and Matthew Camirand, in the "Karachi Vice" clubhouse, in the back of a furniture factory, amongst chicken and fish processing plants. With some of the more "inexpensive" ladies of the night scattered about, it captures the bottlenecked frenzy of their much-loved live show. There, each night, these grown-up kids at heart fall over, get right back up, cry on shoulders and fold the day in halves, watching the sun come up over the dashboard. Over his first few albums Ashworth defined a hybrid strain of raw, emotional, and very homemade synth pop that was instantly recognizable as his own - claustrophobic 2-minute character studies shuddered with reverbed beats, blown-out chords, and simple but infectous melodies, all layered beneath Ashworth's sometimes funny but always heartbreaking lyrics. Now the sound of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone has grown to include pianos, organs, strings, flutes, drums, and pedal steel guitars in addition to Ashworth's signature electronics and drum machines. Nathan Amundson began Rivulets in 1999, when his debut was issued by Chair Kickers' Union, the Duluth label run by Low. Often driven only by voice or quiet guitar, Rivulets was frighteningly gentle, yet genuinely powerful. The brooding love songs of Mark Kozelek's Red House Painters were an apt comparison, as were the acute, windswept soundscapes of Iceland's Sigur Ros. Most often, the music suggested the isolation and odd beauty found at the center of an iced-over lake in the middle of winter. On You Are My Home, Amundson is joined by the none too shabby musical guests Codeine's Chris Brokaw, Jessica Bailiff, Christian Frederickson of Rachel's, Boxhead Ensemble's Fred Lonberg-Holm and Bob Weston of Shellac and Mission Of Burma. Their combined guitars, keyboards, strings and horns work together with Amundson's heartbroken voice magically to create a deep dark melancholia. It's a time when spirits are allowed access. It's a humble time that affects all life. It's a time to recognize and accept change, without the limitations of your own surroundings. That time offers a free ritual that needs no shrine. These collections of songs were written by two homeless friends from Alabama while living in tents in rural Northern California. The majority of this recording was completed without a permanent shelter. Their mixed blood holds some American Indian somewhere, but they have no reservation to live. Yet they make a deliberate attempt to be indigenous to the Earth nearby, away from city babylons.
