Wow its wonderful outside. Its time to live a little - Viva La Spring Break!!! Those buffoons in Florida don't know what they are missing out on here, eh? Rub some cocoa butter on and enjoy the brief week of calm in our lil hamlet of Bloomingtopia. And why shouldn't you - you've had to live through a rough February of slush storms and frozen pipes. Insane heating bills and hangovers. You probably have an almost undeniable urge to take a stroll (to 3rd St Park) and buy some new springtime music (from Landlocked): Select New Arrivals for the Week of 03/13/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Black Devil - 28 After CD/LP (Lo) ................................................................... Black Devil's "extremely rare disco masterpiece" finally receives a proper follow-up. 28 After is an epic journey into the deepest electronic disco, full of haunting vocals, warped lyrics, twisted yet melodic electronics and crisp dance beats. In 2004, Aphex Twin's Rephlex label released an album by Black Devil called Disco Club, a reissue of a long-lost 'Italo disco' classic from 1978. Given its absurdly modern sound many doubted its authenticity, some even suggesting that it was a collaboration between Richard James and Luke Vibert. The album is actually the work of obscure French producer Bernard Fevre. Black Milk - Popular Demand CD/LP (Fatbeats) ................................................................... Detroit's Black Milk has quickly emerged to become one of the new hip hop artists to watch in 2007. Having already gained notoriety from his recent EP Broken Wax as well as his work with Pharoahe Monch, J Dilla, Sean Price, and Slum Village, he's ready to cement his name into the elite class of both producers and emcees. Black Milk is pumping fresh air into the Midwest's historic hip-hop scene. Gene Clark - with the Gosdin Brothers CD (Sundazed) ................................................................... On the first solo album by an ex-Byrd, Gene Clark doesn't stray too far from the nest. Cut in 1966 upon Clark's departure from the iconic LA combo, with current Byrds Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke forming the rhythm section, and spotlighting brothers Vern & Rex Gosdin, a pair of former bluegrass pals of Hillman's who chime in with sweet harmony vocals. Add session guitarists Glen Campbell and Jerry Cole and future Byrd Clarence White and beautiful orchestration by Leon Russell to Clark's melancholy melodies and weatherbeaten voice and the result is a classic country-rock primer that sounded like nothing else in '67 and continues to astound and inspire today. Five bonus tracks from the sessions only sweeten the deal of this eye-opening work. Lindstrom & Prins Thomas - S/T 3LP (Eskimo) ................................................................... Vinyl version finally available. The debut artist album release, produced by two of the hottest leftfield dance artists around. They join forces in mutual admiration and inspiration of each other's productions: Lindstrom as muso-wizard and Prins Thomas as the nu-skool remix-champ. Featuring Italo, funk and disco-influenced productions alongside sounds of the post disco/punk era circa, providing us with lush basslines, sublime melodies and rolling rhythms that cascade like snowflakes being hit by harsh early-morning sunlight - icy, but with a heart bursting with pure emotion. Metheny Mehldau Quartet - Quartet CD (Nonesuch) ................................................................... Nonesuch releases the second collaboration between guitarist Pat Metheny and pianist Brad Mehldau. The record features seven tracks written by Metheny, three by Mehldau, and one jointly written tune. Mehldau's bandmates, drummer Jeff Ballard and bassist Larry Grenadier, play on seven of the songs, while the remaining three are duets. James Morrison - Undiscovered CD (Interscope) ................................................................... Drawing influence from soul greats like Cat Stevens, Otis Redding, and Van Morrison, Undiscovered reveals this Rugby-born vocalist has the sort of world-weary voice and songwriting chops to take the mainstream success that's formerly made stars of Damien Rice, James Blunt, and former tour-mate Corinne Bailey Rae. Purists may still baulk at the prospect of a white lad from the North of England singing soul, but the sure success of Undiscovered ought to prove that a strong voice will always be the bottom line. Resting Rooster - Songs From a Window CD (Underwater Tea Party) ................................................................... Resting Rooster is a sneaky, clever, kaleideoscope, adapting itself to an incredible variety of contexts. The music itself feels like its about to break apart at the seams, bursting with odd contradictions. The lyrics are non-sensical yet intellectual. The emotions are playful yet also seem to have a fragile sadness. Everything seems to be directed towards disorientation. The beautiful repetition is hallucinatory. The odd effect drenched plucks and frenzied sonic changes leave you with a feeling of vertigo. Total Life - S/T LP (Animal Disguise) ................................................................... The solo project of Kevin Doria, of the atmospheric/noise/drone group, Growing. This album displays an obsessive sense of composition and an absolute mastery of harnessing chaos to create a solid masterpiece. Heavy electronic washes, multiple layers of feedback and shifting harmonics create a powerful wall of sound that at first seems overtly harsh, but repeated listenings reveal a hidden beauty and natural soothing effect. Fans of Growing won't be disappointed, but to make the comparisons to them would be much too easy. Type O Negative - Dead Again CD (Steamhammer) ................................................................... Dead Again is Type O Negative's seventh studio album, and after a four year lapse between releases, a much-anticipated return to the sonic bombast that the Brooklyn-based band is famous for. Clocking in at over 77 minutes, Dead Again is a 10-song musical journey through the darkest depths of the human condition. Love, loss, insanity, morality, mayhem, your secret dreams and worst nightmares are all included in the Type O Negative formula created by the self-taught professor of emotional chemistry, Peter Steele. Unsane - Visqueen CD (Ipecac) ................................................................... Coming from the same pre-Quiznos East Village music scene which spawned many acts pigeonholed into what was called noise rock, Unsane always separated itself by performing and producing sounds with an urgency and sincerity without peer even among strong contemporaries such as early Helmet, Cop Shoot Cop and Pussy Galore. Bombarding the listener with punishing, abrasive music delivered with the subtlety of a head-on car crash. Visqueen administers immeasurable amounts of the band's unequalled combination of blood, guts and violence as vocalist/guitarist Chris Spencer's scraping guitar work and vocal angst is cemented by a pounding rhythm section and domineering air of volatile aggressiveness. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black CD (Republic) ................................................................... One of the finest soul albums to come out in years. Frank, her first album, was a sparse and stripped-down affair; Back to Black, meanwhile, takes inspiration from some of the classic 60s girl groups like the Supremes and the Shangri-Las, a sound particularly suited to her textured vocal delivery, while adding a contemporary songwriting sensibility. Best of all, though, is the fact that Back to Black bucks the current trend in R&B by being unabashedly grown-up in both style and content. Winehouse's lyrics deal with relationships from a grown-up perspective, and are honest, direct and, often, complicated. The Wire - Grinderman cover ................................................................... The Wire is an independent, monthly music magazine from the UK dedicated to informed, intelligent coverage of a wide range of progressive, adventurous and non-mainstream musics. Includes a cover story on Nick Cave's new band with Warren Ellis, Grinderman, as well as pieces on Van Der Graaf Generator's Peter Hammill, writing on the first piece of electronic music ever performed (in Egypt!), Invisible Jukebox w/ Algerian singer Rachid Taha, Bow Gamelan's founder Paul Burwell, SF underground veteran Robert Horton, female noise unit Polly Shang Kuan Band, sound artist Ray Lee and much more. Neil Young - Live at Massey Hall CD/CD+DVD (Reprise) ................................................................... Solo. Acoustic. 1971. The legendary concert from Neil Young, is finally officially released, and in high resolution stereo. The acclaimed Toronto performance features classics "Old Man" and, in a suite, "A Man Needs A Maid" and "Heart Of Gold" (before Harvest) along with some of his most popular songs ("Cowgirl In The Sand," "Ohio") as well as the most obscure ("Bad Fog Of Loneliness"). The sound is impeccable, and the closeness to Young in this spare setting exhilarates- especially his vocal quavering in the high registers, his intricate guitar work, and an overall vibe that exceeds description. On the DVD you catch Young in tightly framed, starkly-lit shots, flourishing in the early years of an unparalleled rock career. Not only that, you get commentary from 1997, a rare window on how Young thinks, how he speaks, his humor. VA - DIY : The Rise of the Music Industry After Punk CD/2LP (Soul Jazz) ................................................................... Do It Yourself charts the rise of the independent music industry after punk - from the hundreds of bands and tiny labels that sprung up with like-minded ideals, to the network of shops, manufacturers, studios, printers etc, all connected via a loose network of record distributors that would help define independent music over the following 30 years. Beginning with The Buzzcocks EP in 1977, it soon seemed that every town in Britain had its own music scene complete with bands, small labels, record shops and studios. VA - Eccentric Soul: Twinight's Lunar Rotation 2CD (Numero Group) ................................................................... This is the Big Dig, the Tutankhamen of R&B: Twinight. After two years of interviews, cold calls, storage spaces, half truths, unknowns, and dead ends, we've finally completed a large piece of Chicago's secret soul history. Eccentric Soul: Twinight's Lunar Rotation takes a look beyond their hit maker Syl Johnson, and instead focuses on the records that never had a shot at the charts. It's the story of struggling disc jockeys moonlighting as producers, high school talent show winners, major label cast offs, minor label upgrades, girlfriends with decent voices, and master purchases traded for chart position. This comprehensive two CD set includes a complete label history, a bakers dozen of unpublished photos and three unreleased tracks, including two that were only rumored to exist. VA - Labrador 100: A Complete History of Popular Music 4CD (Labrador) ................................................................... Sweden's most influential indie label. 100 songs + a 40 page booklet with Labrador history, interviews and comments on each track. Labrador is entirely based on the love of pop music and the choice of artists only reflects the excqusite musical taste of the people behind the label. A fact that means once you've discovered, and enjoyed, a band on the label, you can buy anything on the label and rest assure you'll love it. Over the years Sweden's finest purveyor of pop music has brought you favourite bands like Club 8, The Radio Dept, Acid House Kings, Sambassadeur, The Legends, Loveninjas, Edson, Irene, The Mary Onettes, Suburban Kids with Biblical Names and lots more. A milestone in pop, a piece of important musical history and 5 hours of intense pleasure. VA - Remember the Alamode CD (Su!ily) ................................................................... As a testament to an extreme case of musical ADD, Remember The Alamode is the volatile mashup of the noteworthy tastes of SU!iLY's two dudes, Josh and Jesse. Jumping continents and genres, like a skipping record, this 21 track disc is a crash course in mismatched scenes- ranging from hiphop to grindcore noise, singer/songwriter to gameboy dance freakouts and just about everything in between, this release covers just a little bit of what SU!iLY is all about. On top of that, almost all of the tunes included here are specifically exclusive to this compilation, and cannot be found anywhere else. Featuring such locals as Rapscallionz, Vollmar, Justin Clifford Rhody, Basilica, Normanoak, Mike Dixon, and much much more. ................................................................... Neil Young's Tonight's The Night is the hailstorm on the hood of The Replacements Let It Be, while distorted guitars invoke the thread and swerve of Silkworm and Dinosaur Jr. Helped along the way by Amber Webber and Josh Wells of Black Mountain, it will be hard to find a more hauntingly beautiful set of rock music than this debut. It was recorded and mixed, with the help of Black Mountaineers Wells and Matthew Camirand, in the "Karachi Vice" clubhouse, in the back of a furniture factory, amongst chicken and fish processing plants. With some of the more "inexpensive" ladies of the night scattered about, it captures the bottlenecked frenzy of their much-loved live show. There, each night, these grown-up kids at heart fall over, get right back up, cry on shoulders and fold the day in halves, watching the sun come up over the dashboard. Over his first few albums Ashworth defined a hybrid strain of raw, emotional, and very homemade synth pop that was instantly recognizable as his own - claustrophobic 2-minute character studies shuddered with reverbed beats, blown-out chords, and simple but infectous melodies, all layered beneath Ashworth's sometimes funny but always heartbreaking lyrics. Now the sound of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone has grown to include pianos, organs, strings, flutes, drums, and pedal steel guitars in addition to Ashworth's signature electronics and drum machines. Nathan Amundson began Rivulets in 1999, when his debut was issued by Chair Kickers' Union, the Duluth label run by Low. Often driven only by voice or quiet guitar, Rivulets was frighteningly gentle, yet genuinely powerful. The brooding love songs of Mark Kozelek's Red House Painters were an apt comparison, as were the acute, windswept soundscapes of Iceland's Sigur Ros. Most often, the music suggested the isolation and odd beauty found at the center of an iced-over lake in the middle of winter. On You Are My Home, Amundson is joined by the none too shabby musical guests Codeine's Chris Brokaw, Jessica Bailiff, Christian Frederickson of Rachel's, Boxhead Ensemble's Fred Lonberg-Holm and Bob Weston of Shellac and Mission Of Burma. Their combined guitars, keyboards, strings and horns work together with Amundson's heartbroken voice magically to create a deep dark melancholia. BELTESHAZZAR-HIGGS (of Lungfish) w/ CHIARA GIOVANDO (Baltimore) Brightblack Morning Light is a color of the day when the truth of the universe is faded into a veil of blue sky. It's a time when spirits are allowed access. It's a humble time that affects all life. It's a time to recognize and accept change, without the limitations of your own surroundings. That time offers a free ritual that needs no shrine. These collections of songs were written by two homeless friends from Alabama while living in tents in rural Northern California. The majority of this recording was completed without a permanent shelter. Their mixed blood holds some American Indian somewhere, but they have no reservation to live. Yet they make a deliberate attempt to be indigenous to the Earth nearby, away from city babylons. Daniel Higgs is the singer for the band Lungfish and is an absolute modern day shaman. His presence in person and on stage is absolutely mesmerizing. In another time he would have ruled the world, or been burned at the stake, or had his own cult. In Lungfish, his stream of consciousness vocals, add a distinctly spiritual quality to Lungfish's droning repetitive caveman krautrock jams. His newest solo LP, Ancestral Songs (Holy Mountain), is comprised of apocalyptic tunes, a banjo raag, mellifluous birdsong, and the sci-fi-sounding duet of a searing Jew's harp and toy piano. "Are You of the Body?" brings out the electric tamboura tone and an accompanying acoustic guitar to melt the spine. A distorted motorik guitar riff propels Ancestral Songs to a close by focusing on the consistent tone and vibration that flows throughout the album. Chiara Giovando's musical psyche (voice, violin, electronics) is an amalgamation of intuition and critical thought. This can be a tumultuous union, at times leading to rash judgments, at other times to the detailed expressions of sensed truths. The Baltimore City Paper named her work the Best Performance Art of 2005, calling her "excruciatingly tense". Thurston Moore says, "Chiara astounds with a fine balance of slow, unfolding sound-dadaistix and palpable energy-microphone-allure."
