Here in Bloomington its absolutely gorgeous at the time of writing this. Squirrels are frolicking, birds are building nests, lawns are needing to be mowed, and porch culture is in full effect. Students are taking their exams and needing just reward for finishing the semester- like maybe a hot new music release from Landlocked, hmmmm? We don't have any performances planned in our space for a good while, but check below where we highlight a couple of great shows we helped orchestrate at other locations... Select New Arrivals for the Week of 05/01/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Tori Amos - American Doll Posse (Sony) ................................................................... Tori Amos, whose career was propelled by the release of her 1992 multi-platinum breakthrough Little Earthquakes, has led the charge in rejuvenating the era of the female singer songwriter. American Doll Posse features Tori as 5 distinct characters who combine to make a complete woman. After centuries of being dismembered, literally and figuratively, by the ruling patriarchy the feminine essence has reassembled to take back the power. In addition to Amos, the quartet creates a compelling portrait of the role of women today expressed through one of Amos's most wide ranging albums, both thematically and musically. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Baby 81 (Red Ink) ................................................................... BRMC's 4th album is a tasty soundtrack to the Hells Angels bon fire stomp that found Hunter S. Thompson hiding in the trunk of his car wigged out on mescaline and praying for daylight. Chugging basslines and riffing guitars wind around through the darkened corners occasionally aglow with the jumping flames only to show bikers and mamas fucking in the bushes. Black leather, crazy hair, a deep affection for the Jesus & Mary Chain and the various bands in their wake. Dinosaur Jr - Beyond (Fat Possum) ................................................................... The original trio has reunited for the first time since Barlow's split, and the 11-song outcome makes one ask: Why did they wait so long? Mascis's combustible guitar and weary vocals are the perfect blast-off, allowing Murphy's backbeat to set a turbulent pace early, and while songs like "Been There All the Time" and the Neil Young accolade "This Is All I Came to Do" have Mascis as primed as ever, Barlow (whose '90s-era Sebadoh set the bar for lo-fi bands) reappears with two of the record's strongest tracks: the poppy "Lightning Bulb" and "Back to Your Heart," which recalls late-in-the-game Husker Du. The Fall of Troy - Manipulator (Equal Vision) ................................................................... Now with all three members at the tender age of 21, The Fall of Troy's new album, Manipulator, is their future. Having built upon the band's reputation for lightning fast guitar riffs, raw screams, catchy choruses, and a volatile rhythm section, Manipulator finds The Fall of Troy combining metal with progressive, rock with blues, and past with present to once again push themselves beyond. The heavy parts are heavier, the poppy parts are poppier, and the overall dynamics make the album impossible to classify. Feist - The Reminder (Interscope) ................................................................... Feist is the solo project of Leslie Feist, who has also played with Broken Social Scene, Kings of Convenience and half a dozen other bands. The Reminder, her 3rd release, comes from the same well of quiet, appealing songwriting, and delicate vocalizations that made 2004's Let It Die such a sweet treat. This one is a bit more hushed and ballad heavy, closer to Cat Power than Peaches. The record profits from a simple, unfussy aesthetic that keeps the production minimal and the emphasis squarely on Feist's cracking, wistful vibrato. A one-in-a-million voice that evokes both Astrud Gilberto's sexy cool and Billie Holiday's languorous quaver. Frog Eyes - Tears of the Valedictorian (Absolutely Kosher) ................................................................... On their 4th release Frog Eyes stretch their trademark sound further around the evolving, inspired compositions of singer Carey Mercer. With Tears of the Valedictorian, the Vancouver quartet has crafted a dense work that breathes and seethes with an energy all its own. There is space on this record, real dynamic development, especially heard on the two tracks that make up its centerpiece: the twin epics "Caravan Breakers" and "Bushels". Though on the surface Mercer's lyrics hold an extremely bleak world view, at its core this is vital, hopeful music by a group of musicians seemingly playing with a single mind. Robbie Fulks - Revenge! 2CD (Yep Roc) ................................................................... Revenge is the new release from Robbie Fulks, a 23-track "live record". Disc 1 stars the songwriter's ferociously rocking 4-man road band. The other has Robbie in an acoustic cabaret setting, and highlights his Carolina-bred flat picking and communicative dynamism. Together they form a singular document of the country contrarian's musical range - rock, bluegrass, honky-tonk, jazz - and spontaneity. Half the tracks are new and all are newly fired, with an ideal blend of audiophile clarity and on-the-spot joy. More than sweet, its a mid-career summation and vital addition from an artist who still looks curiously forward, and works best without a script. Rush - Snakes & Arrows (Atlantic) ................................................................... Rush is as dangerous, anxious, and prophetic as anything that Arcade Fire or Mars Volta is doing currently. Snakes and Arrows shows this seminal prog rock band reclaiming some of the sonic territory that they'd lost over the past few years. They've crafted a historical and emotional odyssey that shows where they've been and where they're going- from baroque soundscapes reminiscent of their early work to seductive almost folkloric urgency. While never didactic or ponderous, its really an instruction manual for how one conducts themselves with grace and hope through unendurable pain and the vagaries of life. Patrick Wolf - The Magic Position (Fontana) ................................................................... Third album, and major label debut, from cult London electro-folk-art-rocker who has been hailed as the new David Bowie. Like the glam icon, his outrageous sense of style, otherworldly lyricism and fusion of genres has seen accolades piled at his feet, and he looks set to reap the benefits with this set of epic genre-bending pop. ................................................................... Locally, imagine Turn Pale as fronted by Daun Doorkey with an additional spooky organ and you're almost there. Like Siouxsie Sioux? Be here now. Katrina's voice is on the line between Shirley Bassey and Diamanda Galas. (ex-Jaks, Birdland & Jagjaguwar's Love Life) Culture Shock darlings, Maps and Atlases compose complex and intricately beautiful math rock. Think Rapider while studying calculus. Anni Rossi plays experimental, quirky folk-pop. Like Joanna Newson but armed with a viola and fewer elf-like features. Ora Cogan's voice possesses that haunting, soulful quality that seems like its source is coming from deep deep within or beyond. Like a mysterious transplant from decades past, it's as though she opens her mouth and a lilting voice from the '20s comes drifting out. Wednesday June 6th @ 10pm @ BEAR'S PLACE - $5 ------------------------------------------------------------------ MVEE (Ecstatic Peace) - http://www.ecstaticpeace.com/artist.php?id=8 MARK GALUP (Bloomingtopia) +TBA From the deep wilds of New England, specifically lower Vermont and western Massachusetts, the godfathers of the "new weird america" bring waves of sound to wash over your eardrums, drenched in reverb and covered in grit and dirt. One can only hope this is what awaits in the afterlife. MV & EE float in the sky as protectors. They seem to exist on a plane most people can only dream of. This is music with so many layers and sounds like something you'd hear as you ascended toward the afterlife in Hindu legends. Nothing else on earth sounds like their lunar ragas and fingerstyle noise/space. Mark plays the music of yore- finger-picked acoustic folk-blues a la John Fahey, Robbie Basho, or Leo Kottke. His impressive original songs and arrangements of classics draw him into the fold of moderns like Jack Rose, Ben Chasny, Sir Richard Bishop, Steffen Basho-Junghans, and Tetuzi Akiyama.
