No more pencils, no more books, no more teacher's dirty looks... yes, school's out for the summer. That means less jerks out on the streets, in the bars, in line in front of us and in general in the way all the time. Its time to swim and go to the farmer's market and relax. Find it in your heart to make our humble Landlocked abode part of your lazy, hazy, summertime routine. We have special plans for the summer (like our big $1 LP sale on 5/20) and the hot new releases just keep rolling, too.... Select New Arrivals for the Week of 05/08/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Bjork - Volta CD (Atlantic) ................................................................... Bjork returns to her iconic, innovative and rhythmic roots with Volta. Featuring her own infamous beats and collaborations with Timbaland, Antony, Brian Chippendale (Lightning Bolt), Konono No1, Chris Corsano and an all-female Icelandic brass section, the end result is an explosion of beats and an amalgamtion of sound and visuals that give Volta a life of its own, like the world hasn't seen from Bjork in years. the Clientele - God Save the Clientele CD/LP (Merge) ................................................................... On their 3rd full-length, The Clientele are setting free their inner Monkees with a lovely blend of Big Star twisted powerpop, Byrdsian country achin', and flashes of The Beatles at their most joyful and upbeat. The ghosts, half-light, and uncertainties remain, but included in this music is a newfound optimism. With the addition of piano and violin, the band paints from a broader palette, adding splashes of pedal steel and slide guitar to their already lush songs. Their most accomplished and triumphant record. Recorded in Nashville with Mark Nevers (Lambchop, Bonnie Prince Billy, Calexico, Silver Jews). Electrelane - No Shouts, No Calls CD/LP (Too Pure) ................................................................... No Shouts No Calls is alive with Electrelane's signature impassioned organ melodies, primal drum beats, rhythmic bass and weaving guitar riffs, but there's an underlying softness present. Where the last album Axes offered edge and experimentation and The Power Out before it being Electrelane's first vocal offering, where lyrics wavered over cinematic soundscapes, No Shouts No Calls is a collection of eleven, strong, infectious and individual songs. Sage Francis - Human the Death Dance CD/LP (Epitaph) ................................................................... Darkness and light, anger and serenity, tragedy and comedy - these extremes are contained in Sage Francis, and they provide the foundation for Human the Death Dance. From the moment its curtains open to their drawing closed, Sage's 4th solo album evokes the arc of its maker's lifespan - literally spanning the decades from his first recordings as an 8 year-old rapper to the stark contemplation of his darkest days. Between those two poles, Sage proves he's not just a rapper, nor just a spoken-word artist - he's one of the best lyricist of his generation. Keren Ann - s/t CD (Blue Note) ................................................................... The 5th album from the Paris-and-NY-based chanteuse is mesmerizing and beautiful all the way through. From the deliberately breathless vocal delivery to her own smartly minimalist and subtly layered production work, Keren Ann might be the singer's finest work to date. It sounds modern and from the more rarefied aspects of pop's past at the same time. Keren Ann just may prove to be Blue Note's smartest signing since that Norah Jones person. Lavender Diamond - Imagine Our Love CD/LP (Matador) ................................................................... The debut album from Los Angeles-based Lavender Diamond is a tour-de-force of gorgeous melody and uplifting sentiment. Led by the shining, charismatic spirit Becky Stark, Lavender Diamond bring a punk-rooted DIY aesthetic to their enormously entertaining and heartfelt - and vaguely subversive - blend of 60s enthusiasm and 70s-style songwriting. Imagine Our Love pulls together elements of folk, pop, country, performance art, children's music, and protest anthems to make one of the most original musical statements you've heard in years. Maximo Park - Our Earthly Pleasures CD/LP (Warp) ................................................................... The 2nd album from Newcastle's Maximo Park confirms its creators to be one of the UK's more idiosyncratic indie outfits- the sort of bookish, educated rockers for whom intelligence means something more than reading a book while you're having your photo taken. Much here is concerned with collapsing relationships, although they take a more circuitous route than most though the familiar territory of a love song. Far from being introspective and self-absorbed, however, it is an energetic, vibrant affair, thanks in part to the work of producer Gil Norton, who thickens up the synth and hones the band dynamic to quiet/loud perfection. Mojo Magazine 163 June '07 - 100 Records That Changed The World ................................................................... The most influential singles and albums in history, selected, sorted and saluted by Mojo's favourite musicians. Read U2 on Patti Smith, Patti Smith on John Coltrane. Plus brand new interviews with Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Band, Brian Wilson, Jack White, Chuck D, John Lydon, Smokey Robinson and more. Plus a free CD- the tracks that rocked the world covered by the musicians whose lives were changed by them. Kraftwerk, Dylan, Radiohead, Beatles remade by Al Green, Big Star, Siouxsie and more. Also features on The Good, the Bad & the Queen, Johnny Marr and tons more. of Montreal - Icons, Abstract Thee CD-EP (Polyvinyl) ................................................................... Previously only available through Polyvinyl mail order and through the band on tour, this record is finally available at retail. "Icons" is considered the companion piece to Of Montreal's latest, "Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?" These five songs were recorded during the "Hissing" sessions. OOIOO - Eye Remix CD-EP/12" (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... Hot on the heels of their latest record of hard-hitting polyrhythmic skree, OOIOO have unleashed fellow sonic cohort EYE from Boredoms to dismember and reassemble two of their songs. UMO and UMA get the remix treatment here, resulting in two long tracks that reinvent Yoshimi's jet-propelled psychedelic pep rallies as bass-driven dancefloor slammers. As Eye has shown us on recent Boredoms records, he has an uncanny knack for harnessing a groove and blowing it up to a previously unknown scale, and thats exactly what he does here. Page France - And the Family Telephone CD/LP (Suicide Squeeze) ................................................................... The band's fifth release in four years is the product of many hands, but the work of one heart. Principle songwriter Michael Nau's lyrics call to mind Dylan or Nilsson ghostwriting for Margo Guryan, all well-accompanied by a range of upbeat instrumentation. The Sea and Cake - Everybody CD/LP (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... Their first full-length in over four years continues to perfect their singular brand of dreamlike, hot-buttered pop music that sounds delicately handcrafted, yet effortless all the same. Sheets of glowing guitar tones skip along propulsive percussion underscored by gently funky, introspective bass lines, all adorned by breathlessly delivered lines of lyrical poetry. Elliott Smith - New Moon 2CD/2LP (Kill Rock Stars) ................................................................... When Elliott Smith died in 2003, he took with him one of the unique songwriting gifts of his generation: part folk grandeur, part punk fury, and virtually bottomless in 8 short years of solo recordings. This 2CD collection is mostly house-recorded demos plucked from the fertile 3 years that followed his '94 debut Roman Candle - and there's an eminent clarity to these songs that makes them sound like they were recorded yesterday. A lone acoustic guitar accompanying Smith's lamenting wail, his self-deprecating lyrics forever a contrast to the sheer beauty of the melodies. Tarwater - Spider Smile CD/LP (Morr) ................................................................... Tarwater is the project of German musicians Bernd Jestram and Ronald Lippok (of To Rococo Rot). The duo have always had a firm grounding in Berlin's electro and avant-garde scene, and although they are experimenting with poppier songs and structures, the avant-garde presence is still noticeable. Noticable is the band's inclusion of acoustic instruments this time around; mouth organ, violin, oboe and banjo are all evident and nestled amongst the more familiar glitchy electronic landscapes. Clipped glitchy drums are placed next to acoustic percussive sounds and analogue synthesizers next to acoustic bass. Mary Timony Band - The Shapes We Make CD (Kill Rock Stars) ................................................................... The latest stage in the evolution of one of the most important voices in underground music. Flowing from the mystic prog-laced veins that have informed her art for the past decade, this record builds upon the stark rebellious austerity of 2005's "Ex Hex" and imbues it with warmth and formidable urgency. Equal parts clairvoyance and virtuosity, Mary (formerly of Helium) and her musicians paint in broad strokes a vivid landscape of colorful musical shapes. Shannon Wright - Let in the Light CD (Quarterstick) ................................................................... Wright takes the clarity and artistic sensibility of Lou Reed, mixes them with the subdued simplicity of Erik Satie and the explosive abilities of Jimmy Page, and emerges as her own artist. On this, her first album in 3 years, Shannon finally lets herself go and allows the time and emotional space to create the record she really wanted to make. It's earnest and sympathetic, open and vulnerable, and her most revealing work yet. VA - Cult Cargo: Grand Bahama Goombay CD/LP (Numero Group) ................................................................... The second in their series of exploration of the Pan-American funk experience, Cult Cargo: Grand Bahama Goombay is a deep overview of Funky Nassau's redheaded sister city, Freeport, Grand Bahama Island. From 1969-1976 Frank Penn's GBI studio and label cranked out a dozen LPs and twice as many singles infected with the Miami sounds drifting in over the 100 mile strait. The catalog is a fruity blend of rake and scrape, bush, junkanoo, calypso, reggae, and of course, goombay, with a twist of American soul. One can only hope this is what awaits in the afterlife. MV & EE float in the sky as protectors. They seem to exist on a plane most people can only dream of. This is music with so many layers and sounds like something you'd hear as you ascended toward the afterlife in Hindu legends. Nothing else on earth sounds like their lunar ragas and fingerstyle noise/space. Mark plays the music of yore- finger-picked acoustic folk-blues a la John Fahey, Robbie Basho, or Leo Kottke. His impressive original songs and arrangements of classics draw him into the fold of moderns like Jack Rose, Ben Chasny, Sir Richard Bishop, Steffen Basho-Junghans, and Tetuzi Akiyama. Wrack is both a chamber ensemble with a highly unusual instrumentation and a book of compositions tailor-made for the musical personalities of its members. While the compositions' melodic and contrapuntal content is reminiscent of European classical modernism, the open structures, improvisational procedures and energetic performances are heavily indebted to the innovations of the African-American Creative Music tradition.
