Ever since we announced it last week, questions have been pouring in... Yes, we are having a $1 LP sale this sunday! It will be mostly LPs that have never been on the sales floor previously. It will not be items marked down to sell from our stacks. The items are probably scratched, moldy, damaged or not very good - there is a reason they are a dollar, yknow! But that said, you should stop by and listen to DJ Dolla Bin and I bet that you will certainly find some things to pad out your collection. Try some new artists, find some great source material for art projects, stock up on guilty pleasures. Five hours only on Sunday, May 20th! No early birds! Now onto the new stuff... Select New Arrivals for the Week of 05/15/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Arcade FIre - Keep the Car Running / Broken Window 7" (Merge) ................................................................... Whoops we forgot to tell you we got a handful of these in last week! The featured single from Arcade Fire's recent masterpiece, Neon Bible is a hook laden affair with a driving Joy Division bass line and drum pattern held together by Win Butler's impassioned vocals. "Broken Window" is another Arcade Fire mini epic building on a minor key acoustic guitar strum and insistent violin. Essential for all fans. We also now have the Neon Bible 2LP in, on 180gram vinyl w/ 3 sides of music and an etched 4th side. Au Revoir Simone - The Bird of Music (Our Secret) ................................................................... Brooklyn's Au Revoir Simone are specialists in bringing out the heart from within the machine, conjuring a gorgeous, child-like effervescence via pieces of plastic, metal and wires. And while their music is created through the medium of electronics, their songs resonate with an organic warmth that defies their instruments of choice: 3 keyboards and a drum machine. Layers of synths anchored by palpitating drum machine blips and frosted by ethereal vocal melodies, The Bird Of Music displays that the subtle moments in human interaction are the very ones the band enjoys describing most. Balkan Beat Box - Nu Med CD (Jdub) ................................................................... Nu Med is a musical vision of what the Mediterranean would sound like if borders were removed, as BBB makes connections that politics often keep separate. Jewish, Gypsy, Arabic, and American are united by hip hop beats and dancehall toasts. BBB's musical hitchhiking continues as they mix things up with dub and electronics, juxtaposed with ancient Moroccan and Mediterranean melodies. The band's uncategorizable sound gives equal weight to soulful acoustic timbres and digital rhythms creating a uniquely organic sound with electronic elements. With their fusion of Middle Eastern melodies and Balkan brass-band stomp with hip-hop, reggae, and electro beats, this internationally acclaimed collective is out to prove that the entire world is their stage, and that we are all Gypsies. Betty Davis - s/t & They Say I'm Different [CD reissues] (Light in the Attic) ................................................................... Betty married Miles Davis in the late 60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, introducing the jazz great to Jimi Hendrix and inspiring classic work like "Bitches Brew." She herself had been strongly urged to record by Marc Bolan of T. Rex, and turned down both Eric Clapton and Motown to keep control over her own work and express it as nasty as she wanted to be. Rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweil to Ludacris have rhymed over her tracks. Her debut, originally released in 1973, was recorded with a who's who of San Francisco stars - from Sly & the Family Stone's rhythm section to backing vocals from Sylvester and the Pointer Sisters. These deluxe reissues features gorgeous packaging, a treasure trove of previously unreleased bonus tracks, rare photos and archival material, and extended notes. Dungen - Tio Bitar CD (Kemado) ................................................................... Gustav Ejstes, Dungen's founder and principal member, made Tio Bitar (10 Pieces) - a bracing display of psychedelic rock, presented with a bright, avid confidence - largely by himself, with the assistance of guitarist Reine Fiske. When vocals - as on past efforts, sung entirely in Swedish - or a flute appear, they're diverging out to a third melody, still safely within the frame, in tune with each part. Complex arrangements find the songs boiling over with dozens of ideas, stitched together with studio flash, yet played so soulfully that there's no evidence of the kind of smug, cynical hamminess that's been hurting rock music since the early 70s. Efterklang - Under Giant Trees (Leaf) ................................................................... Copenhagen's Efterklang make a welcome return with a magical re-introduction to their sound - the release of Under Giant Trees, a limited edition 5-track mini-album in deluxe packaging. The results are mesmerising - at once vibrant, otherworldly, poignant and panoramic. Extra vocals, brass and strings were added, with Edda and Hildur (from Icelandic quartet amiina). Fennesz / Sakamoto - Cendre CD (Touch) ................................................................... Sakamoto's piano, his style reminiscent of Debussy and Satie, perfectly complements Fennesz with his powerful blend of shimmering guitar and passionate electronics. Fennesz would send Sakamoto a guitar or electronic track and Sakamoto would compose his piano piece. This process was also reversed - Sakamoto initiating the track with a piano composition and Fennesz responding. Sakamoto and Fennesz blend the unstructured and imaginative qualities of improvisation with the satisfying sculpture of composition. Guided By Voices - Austin City Limits 2CD (New West) ................................................................... For nearly two decades, GBV was a touchstone of the indie rock movement in America. This concert, part of PBS's "Austin City Limits" series, was one of the band's last before their 2004 breakup. The show was filmed at the University of Texas at Austin and features an impressive 30-song set list. Tunes include "Demons Are Real," "Gold Star for Robot Boy," "Do the Earth," "Glad Girls," "Buzzards and Dreadfall Crows" and "Girls of Wild Strawberries." Lichens - Omns CD+DVD (Kranky) ................................................................... The second long player from Lichens, like his first, the largely improvised The Psychic Nature of Being, is an ascent to a higher plane. Rob Lowe's sound recordings are of a distinctly personal nature, works turned inward as much as they are projected outward. Lichens launches skyward eerie, hymnal moans; atomized guitar chords; and meditative Fahey-esque fingerpicking... and the special knowledge to which only the most spiritual cats are privy. Mont De Sundua - s/t CD ................................................................... What a juicy find - Mont De Sundua features Jim James of My Morning Jacket with Ben Blandford and Dave Givan of Insects. This Louisville, KY band, formerly known as "Month of Sundays," was founded in 1992. This album was recorded above the Cadillac Studio- Shelbyville, KY in 1998, mixed at the Funeral Home by Kevin Ratterman and Mont de Sundua in 2006. Why did it take almost 10 years to release these songs after they were recorded? We don't know, but we're damn glad they got around to releasing it! http://www.myspace.com/montdesundua to preview. Pink Martini - Hey Eugene! CD (Heinz) ................................................................... This dazzling 12-piece ensemble are led by pianist Thomas Lauderdale and fronted by vocalist China Forbes. Their rich musical journeys carry listeners everywhere from a ballroom in Havana to a cabaret in Paris. This set even includes a number in Japanese and another in Arabic. With their strings, horns, and sultry rhythms, Pink Martini find the common denominators in these musics from around the globe. And while Lauderdale and his cohorts draw from past times and styles, they never come off as museum curators; rather, they celebrate the vibrancy that makes music timeless. TV on the Radio - Live at Amoeba Music CDEP (Interscope) ................................................................... Limited edition 4-track EP from TV on the Radio. The disc was recorded live during the in-store performance at Amoeba Hollywood last September and is strictly limited in its availability, which was previously only digital. Rufus Wainwright - Release the Stars (Geffen) ................................................................... Recorded in Berlin and executive produced by the Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant, Rufus Wainwright's 5th album offers an ounce of restraint from the man that dressed up as Sir Lancelot's crossed girlfriend Lady Shallott on the cover of his last. Having fallen in love and curbed his self-destructive streak, the NY born singer-songwriter has certainly sharpened his wit but the songs remain as ornate and over-the-top as ever, drawing as much inspiration from opera and the musical theater as the desire to purge personal demons. So while Wainwright spends considerable time here pondering the state of the world and his own battles with drug and sexual addiction, every note is punctuated by a choir, orchestral swell, or big burst of brass. Wilco - Sky Blue North CD/LP/CD+DVD (Nonesuch) ................................................................... After their wild experimental streak of the past decade, Wilco's 6th studio album might feel like a bit of a comedown. Sky Blue Sky is mellow and moody, opening with a pleasant jangle and Jeff Tweedy singing a simple song: "Maybe the sun will shine today, the clouds will blow away." Mostly written in the studio by the full band, it's certainly the group's most cohesive album in ages, presenting a dense song cycle padded with intricate guitar work, brushed rhythms, and 70s soft-rock accents. YACHT - I Believe in You. Your Magic Is Real CD (Marriage) ................................................................... Jona Bechtolt is a Young American Challenging High Technology, known as much for his effeminate, wildly sexual "dancing" as for creating damaging beats and weird visuals. Hot on the heels of the release of The Blow's Paper Television, which Bechtolt co-wrote and played all of the instruments on, I Believe In You. Your Magic Is Real is the next step for YACHT. Frog Eyes descend from Canada to bring us a heaping helping of experimental, indie-psych rock. Apart they account for almost as many musical exports as Broken Social Scene with members doing double duty in Swan  Lake, Sunset Rubdown, and Wolf Parade. Together they unite like Voltron to blow minds. It's been awhile since The Impossible Shapes took to a Bloomington stage but emails and weeks of pleading have called them back. More lo-fi, psychedelic-pop than you can handle, if you haven't seen the Shapes play yet then you really have been wasting your time in Bloomington. Yeasayer are from a future where there is a Middle Eastern city built with glass towers - where everyone is wearing turquoise robes, living in glass castles and jamming on Peter Gabriel records. Debut release imminent on Monitor Records. Wednesday June 6th @ 10pm @ BEAR'S PLACE - $5 - 21+ ------------------------------------------------------------------ MV+EE (Ecstatic Peace) - http://www.ecstaticpeace.com/artist.php?id=8 MARK GALUP (Bloomingtopia) VJOB (parts unknown) From the deep wilds of New England, specifically lower Vermont and western Massachusetts, the godfathers of the "new weird america" bring waves of sound to wash over your eardrums, drenched in reverb and covered in grit and dirt. One can only hope this is what awaits in the afterlife. MV & EE float in the sky as protectors. They seem to exist on a plane most people can only dream of. This is music with so many layers and sounds like something you'd hear as you ascended toward the afterlife in Hindu legends. Nothing else on earth sounds like their lunar ragas and fingerstyle noise/space. Mark plays the music of yore- finger-picked acoustic folk-blues a la John Fahey, Robbie Basho, or Leo Kottke. His impressive original songs and arrangements of classics draw him into the fold of moderns like Jack Rose, Ben Chasny, Sir Richard Bishop, Steffen Basho-Junghans, and Tetuzi Akiyama. VJOB (Violence Jack-Off Boutique) is the answer to the question "does colonoscopy belong in music?" Leah Y. shoots classically-trained suicide-bomber ping-pong balls from her guitar's sound-hole while the Mann sets new standards for bovine spongiform encephalopathy. Wrack is both a chamber ensemble with a highly unusual instrumentation and a book of compositions tailor-made for the musical personalities of its members. While the compositions' melodic and contrapuntal content is reminiscent of European classical modernism, the open structures, improvisational procedures and energetic performances are heavily indebted to the innovations of the African-American Creative Music tradition. In other words, equal parts free-jazz, gypsy/klezmer, Raymond Scott cartoon music, modern composition and ambient texture.
