Ahhhh holidaze... we hope you had a good one. Maybe some grillin', some yard work, Indianapolis 500 watchin', or just maxin' and relaxin'. With the inevitable shipping delays of the holiday, the industry opted for a smaller release schedule before the flood of June goodness. Regardless, there is still some quality titles to enjoy, so please do so. Select New Arrivals for the Week of 05/29/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Acid Mothers Temple - Crystal Rainbow Pyramid Under the Stars (Important) ................................................................... Brand new album from Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO features the recent addition of female vocalist Kitagawa Hao. Recorded over a period of four months, this is a very clean-sounding and polished AMT. Frontman Kawabata Makoto admitted, only half joking, that this has the "cleanest sound in AMT history!" More controlled than many of their speaker-destroying, fuzz-blasted speed-guru jams, Crystal Rainbow Pyramid is focused on mystic ambient passages leading into Makoto's head-heavy echo-riffs. Artwork by Seldon Hunt. Belle & Sebastian LP reissues (Matador) ................................................................... We're pleased as punch to announce Matador has further extended their new vinyl reissue series. Making a win/win situation an even bigger winner, these reissues, like all recent Matador vinyl, will include a free download of the album in mp3 format. Each release is on 180 gram vinyl and exquisitely remastered for vinyl by RTI. Belle and Sebastian's first four records are now included in the reissue campaign, which also includes Interpol, Cat Power, Pavement and future releases from GBV and more! Boris w/ Michio Kurihara - Rainbow (Drag City) ................................................................... This one dropped last week but we forgot to tell you... Japanese metalmongers Boris are continuing their collaborative tradition- most recently realized on the Sunn 0))) assisted Altar- with the US release of Rainbow, a full-length collaboration with guitarist Michio Kurihara (Ghost, Damon & Naomi, Stars). The Dead C - Future Artists (Ba Da Bing) ................................................................... In their first new album since 2003 and last year's 2CD greatest hits behemoth, New Zealand's The Dead C return with another uncompromising realisation of the finest rock improvisation you'll ever hear. Future Artists contains 5 tracks of genius drone and barbarous clashing sounds. From the first track, "The AMM of Punk Rock" through to the last, "Garage", their intensity is unyielding, their inventiveness jaw-dropping. It's been 20 years, and they show no sign of losing their ability to express the surreal and undefined. Je Suis France - Afrikan Majik (Antenna Farm) ................................................................... Athens, GA's Je Suis France perfectly embodies the town's reputation for whimsical yet adventurous indie rock experimentation. The group's only agenda is to bring the jamz in as many ways possible, and to that end it plays a constantly evolving stream of psychedelic rock, drawing on influences like Gong, Superchunk, Outkast, and Spacemen 3. Mansbestfriend (Sole) - Poly.Sci.187 (Anticon) ................................................................... Flitting from electro to hip-hop to mutated soundscapes, Sole doesn't seem tied to a genre or a scene - there's no pandering to the backpack brigade here, rather Sole uses his production and his diversity to tell a story and the result is closer to experimental jazz than to hip-hop proper. From the tiniest drum beat to the loudest rap everything is drowned in thick white noise, saturated like an ancient cassette tape and covered in the kind of vinyl crackle that would make Philip Jeck blush. As you can imagine the resulting audio assault is closer to a noise album than a straight up hip-hop record. Don't give up on underground hip-hop just yet - Sole gives us hope. Piano Magic - Part Monster (Important) ................................................................... In its 10th year of existence, Piano Magic can look back on a varied and accomplished discography most bands wouldn't manage in a lifetime of trying. Records for 4AD, Darla, Morr Music, Important, and many more mark the band's way. And though they're generally tarred with the brushes of ambient, coldwave, or even ghost rock, Part-Monster, their 7th album, has its fill of all-out, near-brutal dynamic intensity. Part-Monster gracefully balances cathartic noise with romantic paeans to the band's favorite subject- the cruel, tragic side of London and the city's most graceful outcast, Joseph Carey Merrick. Omar Rodriguez-Lopez - Se Dice Bisonte No Buffalo (GSL) ................................................................... One of 4 albums written and recorded by Omar whilst living in Amsterdam in 2005. Consisting of 3 vocal tracks and 7 instrumentals, the album includes the original studio version of the song Please Heat This Eventually (without the vocals of Damo Suzuki). Another song, Rapid Fire Tollbooth, has been a feature of Mars Volta's live set for the past few months. Album art is provided by longtime collaborator Damon Locks of The Eternals. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - In Glorious Times (The End) ................................................................... Rock-against-Rock pioneers Sleepytime Gorilla Museum celebrate the extremes of sonic debilitation, with this muffled cry into the dark night of the soul. Triumphantly smothered within the intricate stylings of musical evolution, the expansive world of literature and the pain and passion of one's emotions, the Oakland based band have once again imbedded themselves deep in the creative process, allowing themselves to reach new plateaus. For Fans of Swans, Ligeti, Joyce, Zappa and Art Bears. Richard Thompson - Sweet Warrior (Shout Factory) ................................................................... On Sweet Warrior, Thompson roars back with his first electric set of originals since 2003. Supported by longtime backing cohorts, the guitarist adds to his six-string talents with occasional mandolin, autoharp, accordion, and even organ, all used as icing on a cake of tunes that further refine his established style. Perhaps the most startling song is the viciously anti-war "Dad's Going to Kill Me," about a soldier stationed in Baghdad, wondering if he will survive another day. Thompson's dramatic guitar solos are kept on low boil, occasionally bubbling up but never hogging the spotlight. They are, along with his distinctive vocals, actors in a play of characteristically classy tunes that will thrill Thompson's fans, who have been waiting for just such a set of literate and challenging music from a musician who never delivers less. One can only hope this is what awaits in the afterlife. MV & EE float in the sky as protectors. They seem to exist on a plane most people can only dream of. This is music with so many layers and sounds like something you'd hear as you ascended toward the afterlife in Hindu legends. Nothing else on earth sounds like their lunar ragas and fingerstyle noise/space. Mark plays the music of yore- finger-picked acoustic folk-blues a la John Fahey, Robbie Basho, or Leo Kottke. His impressive original songs and arrangements of classics draw him into the fold of moderns like Jack Rose, Ben Chasny, Sir Richard Bishop, Steffen Basho-Junghans, and Tetuzi Akiyama. VJOB---> Ms. Yeppi can't stop screaming, "Show me your tits!" while Mr. Mann keeps thumping on something. When asked what we sound like, all we can say is, "We're like holy water, only thicker." Wrack is both a chamber ensemble with a highly unusual instrumentation and a book of compositions tailor-made for the musical personalities of its members. While the compositions' melodic and contrapuntal content is reminiscent of European classical modernism, the open structures, improvisational procedures and energetic performances are heavily indebted to the innovations of the African-American Creative Music tradition. In other words, equal parts free-jazz, gypsy/klezmer, Raymond Scott cartoon music, modern composition and ambient texture.
