Get em before they're gone forever! As well as these great new titles: Select New Arrivals for the Week of 07/24/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Trey Anastasio - The Horseshoe Curve (Red Ink) ................................................................... Phish bandleader and guitarist Trey Anastasio's new instrumental album showcases his Afro-Cuban-influenced improvisations, replete with five-part horn arrangements, tight breaks, multiple percussionists, and of course, Trey's soulful, nimble guitar work. A journey, an inventive exploration of the big band funk that he has been steeped in for the larger part of the decade. Bishop Allen - The Broken String CD/LP (Dead Oceans) ................................................................... In 2006, the band self-released an EP every month of the year. Fifty-eight songs later, Bishop Allen's pop smarts sound timeless, escaping the indie-pop idiom and revealing a language informed by The Kinks, Dylan, and The Zombies. On this, their sophomore album, the band made a quantum leap. Of its twelve songs, ten are reworked tracks from the EPs and two are previously unreleased. These are not just re-recordings. The songs' arrangements have grown, the production is lush, the lyrics are front and center, and the band's evolution has reached a new level. The Broken String is poised to be the pop soundtrack of the summer. Catch them August 10th @ Rhino's w/ Page France. Dalek - Deadverse Massive Vol.1 : Rarities 1999-2006 (Hydrahead) ................................................................... This is hip hop by way of David Lynch, Wolf Eyes and Throbbing Gristle, and that's exactly what the world needs right now. Although their sound could easily be compared to Company Flow or Cannibal Ox in parts, they are just a little too 'weird' for Def Jux, and their inclusion into the Ipecac roster seems entirely valid. This particular hodgepodge of unreleased material, rarities and remixes comes to us from the metal-centric Hydrahead and the crossover makes perfect sense. The music here retains an attention to dynamic, to noise, to aggressive catharsis - and this is where Dalek have the power to dive deep into your soul and not let go. David Garland - Noise In You (Family Vineyard) ................................................................... Garland is a multi-instrumentalist currently exploring the sumptuous jangle of a 12-string guitar; he sings with a voice that's deep, honest, and intimate. Noise In You is unclassifiable: pop music that's both experimental and accessible, and is rich with intricate layered harmonies and startling colors and textures. It features the beautiful, sometimes mystical voices of a younger generation of musicians - Sufjan Stevens, Mira Romantschuk (of Mi & L'au), Diane Cluck, Viking Moses, and David Deporis - together with guitars, flute, piano, clarinet, sarod, oboe, and more. Noise In You unfolds into a wondrous, subtly interconnected song cycle that sweeps you up in its imaginativeness, drama, and sensual pleasure. Marmoset - Florist Fired CD/LP (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... Indiana faves Marmoset are back! Merging the Swell Maps-inspired tumultuous clamor of their debut, their addictive 2-minute anthems, and epic joyful dirges, "Florist Fired" has it all. Although principle songwriter Jorma Whittaker possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of Beatles-esque melodies and is likely to cite Lennon and friends as his musical influences, Florist leaves listeners with the unmistakable feeling that the band owes much more to a Keith Richards-led Stones swagger - without the budget or access to premium pharmaceuticals. MF Doom - Mmm Food [CD+DVD reissue] (Rhymesayers) ................................................................... In 1998, Zev Love X of the seminal rap group KMD re-emerged as a masked super villain known as MF Doom, released "Operation: Doomsday", created multiple aliases, then worked on collaborative side projects with Madlib and Dangerdoom with Danger Mouse. This long awaited follow-up to "Operation: Doomsday" was originally released in late 2004 and has since been out of print. The special dual package includes an hour long DVD of live performances and behind the scenes footage from the Mmm Food Tour. Sebadoh - The Freed Man [reissue] (Domino) ................................................................... One of the first and most crucial releases in the burgeoning lo-fi movement, which would peak in media attention in the mid-90s with the success of Beck, Guided By Voices, and Pavement. The 70-odd minutes of wayward brilliance collected here offer the listener a rare and recommended opportunity to transport themselves to the weed-hazed bedroom where these scraps, songs, and pranks were recorded, to imbibe deeply of the haywire creativity that went on in these sessions. This deluxe edition re-issue has been re-mastered and includes a whopping 52 tracks on a single disc, including many that haven't seen the light of day until now. Liner notes by Lou Barlow and Eric Gafney. Tegan and Sara - The Con (Sire) ................................................................... Written while the twin sisters were apart, resting after touring the highly acclaimed 2004 album So Jealous. The record sounds a little more mature than the duo's past works, which makes complete sense, as the duo is maturing. But it also sounds a little more melancholy than past efforts, which could be a result of the sisters being apart from each other while writing. Or a result of the state of the world. Or their dog died. Who knows? Produced by Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla, guest players include Jason McGerr from DCFC on drums, and Matt Sharp from The Rentals/Weezer and Hunter Burgan from AFI on bass. UNKLE - War Stories (Surrender All) ................................................................... UNKLE is back with a third album, War Stories, which finds James Lavelle teaming up with Richard File for a second time. War Stories' guest vocalists include Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Ian Astbury (The Cult), 3D (Massive Attack), The Duke Spirit, Autolux and Gavin Clark (Clay Hill). James makes his vocal debut on War Stories, singing on Hold My Hand as well as dueting with Richard on Morning Rage. The packaging features paintings specially commissioned by Massive Attack's 3D. John Vanderslice - Emerald City (Barsuk) ................................................................... Vanderslice recorded this album in the midst of anguishing legal limbo after a visa application for his French girlfriend was rejected by US immigration. The album takes its title from a reference to the "Green Zone" in Iraq, but its themes are broad. John is starting to look like one of the most consistently engaging singer and songwriter on indie rockdom's current landscape. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Is Is EP (Interscope) ................................................................... New EP from the New York Post-Post-Punk trio featuring five new studio tracks. This EP was recorded in one whirlwind day in New York and features songs written on the road while they toured Fever To Tell. Three of these blistering tracks previously appeared on their live DVD, but this is the first time any of them have been recorded in a studio. Five tracks: 'Rockers To Swallow', 'Down Boy', 'Kiss Kiss', 'Isis' and '10x10'. He belongs to a line of innovators that includes Richard Pryor, Lenny Bruce and Andy Kaufman. A one of a kind performer that will leave you either scratching your head or bursting at the seams in laughter. Faced with an entire generation of young people being raised on nothing but over-produced radio rock and emasculated thrift-store hipster whining, Tremendous Fucking lives to grab an audience by the throat, smash their emo glasses, and go home with their girlfriends. Their sound - the Jesus Lizard molesting the Pixies while McLusky takes pictures - and explosive stage presence leave a trail of damaged eardrums, broken psyches & rocked asses in their wake.
