Stop the presses! Hide the women and children! Landlocked is pleased as punch to present unto thee, this Friday, August 3rd, at Bears Place (1316 E 3rd), America's Funnyman, Neil Hamburger (w/ Busman's Holiday & Tremendous F*cking). Neil has been riding the thin line between pizza parlors and Madison Square Garden for years now with his unique brand of humor. Seriously, do yourself a favor and check this performance out, regardless of whether or not you know who he is, as it is sure to be as controversial as it is legendary. More details and previews down lower and on our website - you know the drill. Select New Arrivals for the Week of 07/31/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Ace of Clubs - Benefist (First Cask) ................................................................... A new Luke Vibert (Kerrier District, Plug, Wagon Christ) project that brings a crate of sick, acid-drenched mayhem to burn up the dancefloor. You might decide it's the sequel to the Warp album, Yoseph, or that it's probably the most party-action aimed set from Luke to date. Acid dancefloor monsters shag the brains out of freestyle, disco and house, though by the end this will all mean nothing: it's simply another explosion of Vibert hits. Experience once again the magic and accident of classic acid, Luke Vibert-style. Bat For Lashes - Fur & Gold CD/LP (Caroline) ................................................................... Look at Natasha Khan, with her Cleopatra shawl and elfish hair and you'll surely have this songstress pegged as the first UK riposte to figures like Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, and Cocorosie. Dig a little deeper and the music has a more complex provenance. A harpsichord led track embellished with theremin and a militaristic drum motif is the sort of vintage-modern soundscape reminiscent of Bjork at her most restrained, while elsewhere her dramatic tale-telling suggests she might yet develop into a songwriter of the poetic calibre of Kate Bush. A haunting and richly orchestrated debut album. Preview it in our listening station and decide for yourself. Common - Finding Forever (Universal) ................................................................... This album is the follow up to the 4 time Grammy nominated, critically heralded and Kanye West produced Be. Finding Forever, finds Kanye again taking the bulk of production work with help from the late great J Dilla. The street single The Game produced by Kanye with scratches by the legendary DJ Premier is a horn drenched, vintage NY rap boom-bap banger from the Chi-town emcee. The resounding lead single The People finds Common lyrically asserting why and who he creates his music for over regal strings, delectable keys and vocals by Gil Scott Heron. C Rayz Walz & Sharkey - Monster Maker (Babygrande) ................................................................... From the get-go this collaboration between Washington DC based beat manipulator Sharkey and NYC microphone maniac C-Rayz Walz is nothing short of incendiary. Bursting with over-the-top electro-shock sonic therapy the album kicks down the doors on anybody's misconceptions that modern day rap revolves solely around mainstream pop sell-out theatrics. Delivering a well balanced blend of soulful rumination and old New School-styled hardcore bombast, Sharkey and C-Rayz show and prove immaculately. Freeze Etch - Pejorative CD (self) ................................................................... *Local Talent* Freeze Etch is Bloomington's own Adam Duckworth. This is his first official release in 4 years and is limited to 100 copies in vintage CD-ROM caddies. You might know Adam from his DJing at Axis of Evil. This release contains 6 previously unreleased tracks - including a spoken-word collaboration with notorious cyberpunk author Kenji Siratori, and 2 tracks from his forthcoming full length, Vessels. RIYL the dark side of the dance floor. Spencer Moore - s/t (Tompkins Square) ................................................................... He played a tent show with the Carter Family in the 30s, and was recorded by Alan Lomax in 1959, who called him "as genuine as a rail fence." In our headlong rush into the age of iPods and laptops, it is reassuring to know that there are still people around like Spencer Moore. In a rustic mountain home perched on a green hillside of the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia, Spencer Moore remains almost untouched by modernity. He provides his own entertainment on an acoustic guitar now a half century old. Knowing between 500-600 songs by heart, this 88 year old country singer can sing you most any old-time song known in this part of the Blue Ridge. Spencer Moore is a living link to our musical past and this is his debut album. 1990s - Cookies (Rough Trade) ................................................................... 1990s could be the toughest, meanest, most insane band in the UK. The indie trio hail from Glasgow, which does, after all, have a reputation for being a city of hard men. Former Suede man and occasional Libertines producer Bernard Butler is behind the desk and there's a pleasing tautness to the album's sound, even if it is derivative of David Bowie, Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop and Jonathan Richman. Josh Rouse - Country Mouse City House CD/LP (Nettwerk) ................................................................... Since his debut showcased a youthful Nebraskan with an open road of promise, on through the 5 albums that followed, Rouse has followed that road in dawdling, nomadic spurts across America and the Atlantic. There are few bombshells on his 7th release, one flowing with lustrous arrangements and Rouse's pacifying voice. Though his guitar serves as the conduit, the music is fused with modest horns and gentle organ fills. No longer the naive Midwesterner from a decade ago, this is the globetrotting Rouse who has found a home in Spain. Sigur Ros - In a Frozen Sea: A Year With Sigur Ros (7 LPs + book) ................................................................... Super-deluxe hard cover album containing re-pressings of 3 classic Sigur Ros LPs: Agaetis Byrjun, ( ), and Takk, as well as Smaskifa, which has never before been released on vinyl. The LPs slip into 7 individually customized vinyl sleeves which are designed with original photography from the 2006 tour. The enclosed book is a 32 page publication of never before seen photographs, observations and quotes that captures the band in their words, in their world. Expensive but well worth the cost for this collector's item! Limited to 5000 copies worldwide, we have 1. Studio - West Coast (Information) ................................................................... This is the first album by Studio, finally given a full-fledged release after a limited release disappeared from the racks last year. This is a schizophrenic musical project by Dan Lissvik and Rasmus Hagg, based in Gothenburg, Sweden. West Coast will appeal to fans of the new slo-mo Italo disco and is the missing link between The Cure and Lindstrom touching on Can, Neu, Happy Mondays and The Smiths in their creation of an Afrobeat dub disco indie pop adventure. With nods to Balearic and Madchester, this collection of strung-out, dreamy electronic pop music already sounds like a modern-day classic. The Wire - #282 Ricardo Villalobos (August 2007) ................................................................... Ricardo Villalobos (This Chilean DJ and techno producer has become the toast of Berlin's minimal scene, with 4-hour sets and disorientating beatdowns); Axolotl (Nick Cain books a seat in the memory theatre for Karl Bauer's delirious electric violin drones); Matthew Dear (As False, Jabberjaw and Audion, the US electronica producer toggles between pop and rougher textures); Cross Platform: Laurie Anderson (The multimedia maven rails against American foreign policy in her new Homeland performance); Invisible Jukebox: Jonathan Harvey; Whitehouse; The Primer: British Psychedelic Folk (User's map of the misty lanes of Albion's folk rock, including Sandy Denny, Steeleye Span, Pentangle, John Martyn, Mellow Candle, Comus, & Wicker Man). He belongs to a line of innovators that includes Richard Pryor, Lenny Bruce and Andy Kaufman. A one of a kind performer that will leave you either scratching your head or bursting at the seams in laughter. Faced with an entire generation of young people being raised on nothing but over-produced radio rock and emasculated thrift-store hipster whining, Tremendous Fucking lives to grab an audience by the throat, smash their emo glasses, and go home with their girlfriends. Their sound - the Jesus Lizard molesting the Pixies while McLusky takes pictures - and explosive stage presence leave a trail of damaged eardrums, broken psyches & rocked asses in their wake.
