Steamy. Its downright oppressive hot out there. Time to hit the ole swimmin' hole and try to avoid the "air you wear." Luckily, Landlocked is air-conditioned and you better believe it feels great, and even better when you purchase some of the great new titles available to you... Select New Arrivals for the Week of 08/07/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) The Brunettes - Structure and Cosmetics (Sub Pop) ................................................................... The Sub Pop debut by these New Zealand natives features breezy, effervescent, Shangri-Las-reminiscent pop. The backing band ranges from five to ten strong and incorporates the marimba, trumpet, alto and tenor sax, and more. It retains the sweetly charming, sunbeam-drenched sound The Brunettes are known for, but adds a hint of darkness and drama in other tracks. They've played with the likes of The Shins, Rilo Kiley, Postal Service, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. The Budos Band - II CD/LP (Daptone) ................................................................... Like the deadly scorpion of the album's cover, Budos' 2nd release creeps stealthily over the hot desert sand. With its 22 legs, 3 horns, and hallucinogenic venom, Budos (the unheralded emperors of Instrumental Staten Island Afro-Soul) continue to rule. Their debut was heralded as a groundbreaking exploration of funk, afro-beat and soul music. The new seeks to do the same through 10 exciting new instrumentals recorded live at Daptone's House of Soul. Loren Connors - The Hymn of the North Star LP (Family Vineyard) ................................................................... Since 1978, Loren Connors has been redefining American blues and folk guitar. He has recorded over 20+ solo and collaborative albums with Suzanne Langille, Jim O'Rourke, John Fahey, Alan Licht, Christina Carter, Jandek, Thurston Moore, Keiji Haino, Darin Gray, and others. Connors creates a tapestry of transparent and haunting melodies that transform the Delta blues into a ghost-like apparition that never settles as it pours from the soul. These 6 pieces show his contemporary elegiac style at its peak of romantic minimalism. Recorded in his apartment, Hymn is saturated with subtle details and the barely there tracks of guitar and bass floating in the background. Limited to 474 copies on 180g vinyl. Jesu / Eluvium split LP (Temporary Residence) ................................................................... Already fans of each other's music, these 2 sought to compliment each other and in the process stretched their individual sounds to their outermost limits. Jesu shoots for the moon with a trio of fuzzed-out tunes that owes more to first-wave British shoegaze than Broadrick's roots in Godflesh and Napalm Death. Eluvium aims for the heart of the sun with a magnum opus that transforms from a lonely rattle to a seismic, swirling storm of sound. Little Wings - Soft Pow'r (Rad) ................................................................... Little Wings is the musical arm of acclaimed visual artist Kyle Field, with a fluctuating lineup of other talented musicians. Little Wings' transient, hippie-ish lyrical tones smack of West Coast Buddhist-flavored beat poetry in the early spirit of Richard Brautigan, although not without imparting a rhymed pop sensibility unprecedented in the American underground. Field has professed to be simply a "writer" and it is this mantra that characterizes all of his work and pervades his clear, unfettered songs. Soft Pow'r, the latest in a distinguished and celebrated list of albums, is filled with songs that stick with the listener due to their freeness and honesty. Magnolia Electric Co. - Sojourner 4CD+DVD (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... This box includes 4 CDs, a DVD, a poster, postcards, and a medallion. The CDs are from 4 distinct recording sessions. Nashville Moon was recorded by Steve Albini, Sun Session was recorded at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis, the Black Ram session was recorded by David Lowery, and the Shohola session was recorded by Jason Molina alone, with a guitar and microphone. The DVD is a documentary film that follows the band as they tour the prairie provinces of Canada, and it shows the loneliness one can feel even when traveling in a pack. Together, these make for their most ambitious and robust release to date. Mirah And Spectratone International - Share This Place (K) ................................................................... Lori Goldston and Kyle Hanson of Black Cat Orchestra team up with K Records recording artist Mirah to deliver a sweeping song cycle inspired by the epic complexity and tragic and triumphant lives of insects, touching on themes of villainy, seduction, self-sacrifice, and love. Along with Goldston and Hanson's trademark cello and accordion, Spectratone's hybrid sound wanders easily through a range of influences, from early music to folk to psychedelia. Layered with their lush, meticulous tones are Mirah's ravishingly intimate vocals, recorded by Steve Fisk and Phil Elvrum (The Microphones). Marissa Nadler - Songs III: Bird on the Water (Kemado) ................................................................... Bird on the Water is dark and atmospheric, and Marissa Nadler's most personal to date. Thematically she relates to characters living on the fringes of society. Songs revolve around the demise of a love relationship as well as eulogies and dirges. For the uninitiated, Marissa grew up in a small town in Massachusetts, where perhaps the brutal winters bred into her a chilly disposition and an early propensity for the darker and more melancholy side of things. Okkervil River - The Stage Names CD/LP (Jagjaguwar) ................................................................... Riddled with characters real and fake, with the relics of high culture and the crumpled up trash of low culture, The Stage Names is a cinemascopic take on the meaning of entertainment in the modern world. Reverberant with echoes of Motown snap and girl group pop, redolent with ripe whiffs of dirty rock'n'roll, shining with the shimmy of Bo Diddley, with the shimmer of the Velvets, with the swagger of the Faces, and with a glittery sprinkling of cheap perfume to disguise the stink - a relentlessly paced and ruthlessly thrilling journey. Tarentel - Ghetto Beats on the Surface of the Sun 2CD (Temporary Residence) ................................................................... Originally released as a limited edition series of vinyl albums, "Ghetto Beats" is collected here on 2 CDs - a full 2 hours of music. A sun-baked cluster of ragged rhythms, splintered sound, and scorched shimmer. The production is a caustic mix of hi- and lo-fi, creating a strange sense of timelessness, like discovering a black & white photograph of the future. Available in a numbered, limited edition quadruple gatefold jacket. Like Tarentel covering This Heat, or a krautrock No Neck Blues Band, or maybe even Tussle via This Heat with a bit of 23 Skidoo thrown in for good measure. VA - Thai Pop Spectacular: 1960s-1980s (Sublime Frequencies) ................................................................... Surf guitars, funky organs, tight horn sections and amazing vocals are assembled here in this compilation of retro-pop grooves from Bangkok and beyond. Featuring the "Queen of Luk Thung", the "Shadow Music" style of Johnny Guitar, a few Thai trademark comedy songs, and much more. Romping Disco, seductive Thai soul, wah-wah pedals, and crazy arrangements help round out this astounding set. VA - Molam: Thai Country Groove From Isan Vol. 2 (Sublime Frequencies) ................................................................... The true, raw & electrified, hardcore roots Molam sound from Northeastern Thailand. As psychedelic as Country music could ever be, this is a collection of the most grooving, rocking and droning beats of the Isan countryside from the 1970s. Perhaps even better than Volume 1, this was the magic period of modern Molam when effected guitars & Phin, crazy organ sounds, and absolutely stunning vocal freestylers ruled the Northeast.
