Come find your treasure, we know its here waiting for you. And if its not, maybe it is one of these hot new releases, or maybe its one of the hot new staff picks, reviewed further down this update, soak it all in and pay us a visit while parking is still a pleasure... Select New Arrivals for the Week of 08/14/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Art in Manila - Set the Woods on Fire (Saddle Creek) ................................................................... After Azure Ray disbanded, member Orenda Fink put her energies into a solo record in 2005, called "Invisible Ones". Upon touring in support of that album with various revolving band members, she chose the cream of the crop and formed a new group called Art Belle, then changed it to Art In Manila (a nod to radio host Art Bell's exodus to the Phillipines). On this release, the band flirts playfully with genre wanderlust without ever abandoning cohesion. Moody slow-burners follow four-to-the-floor rockers that butt up against serene ballads. A powerful debut. Bang Lime - Best Friends In Love (Last Gang) ................................................................... With Metric on hiatus and singer Emily Haines pursuing solo work, bassist Josh Winstead and drummer Joules Scott-Key of the Toronto indie dance-rock act became restless enough to start their own project. Coming up with a name derived from the duo's noisy jam sessions, Bang Lime represents a sound decidedly heavier than Metric and features Winstead taking on vocal and guitar duties. Flight of the Conchords - The Distant Future EP (Sub Pop) ................................................................... Sub Pop's debut release from New Zealand's 4th most popular folk-comedy duo and current HBO phenoms. The Distant Future EP includes Business Time, If You're Into It, and Not Crying, as well as live versions of The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room and Robots. Plus, there's live banter! Junior Senior - Hey Hey My My Yo Yo (Rykodisc) ................................................................... Dance floor lovers rejoice! The dynamic Danish duo return in feel-good form, mashing-up their Mamas & the Papas-meets-Sugarhill Gang sound with the manic, party energy that they're known for. The sweet sounding 60s pop, 70s funk and 80s hip-hop inspired album features notable guest artists including Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson of the B-52s, Le Tigre, 60s Motown girl group the Velvelettes plus the legendary Spooner Oldham. Mendoza Line - 30 Year Low (Glurp) ................................................................... Love songs come and go, but a good breakup song will jam its fist into your chest and squeeze the life right outta you. 30 Year Low marks the end of band mates Tim and Shannon's marriage and artistic collaboration. What we're left with is 8 new songs so gut-wrenchingly personal you can't help but be swept up in the bitter heartsickness. A crowded, brutal, witty, authentic, vigorous mess of history and hurt feelings, a vivid and contradictory document of life at the edge of 30, and the death of love for two beaten-down and tangled-up souls. Mylla - Vanya (Subliminal Sounds) ................................................................... Mylla's debut came into fruition at the legendary illicit speakeasy BZ in a Stockholm cellar. This album was recorded in a limestone cottage on a secluded island far out in the Baltic Sea, known by sailors for centuries as the "White Hawaii." The music is steeped in the Swedish 70s prog tradition, and the creation of this album was as much a dance-party as a recording session. Think summertime warmth, beer jams, sweaty dancefloors. Nina Nastasia & Jim White - You Follow Me (Fat Cat) ................................................................... Following last year's critically acclaimed 'On Leaving' album, Nina Nastasia makes a rapid return with a stunning collaborative album with Jim White, the peerless drummer of beloved Australian instrumental trio, Dirty Three. Stripped back yet further for Nina to just a two-piece (drums, guitar, vocal), this is a fantastically focused record - a taut, raw document of two incredible musicians in deep dialogue, exploring the boundaries of songform to find a rare and striking complement. Oh No - Dr. No's Oxperiment (Stones Throw) ................................................................... Oh No concocts 30 brand new beats, continuing Stones Throw's acclaimed series of instrumental hip-hop albums (following J Dilla's Donuts and Madlib's Beat Konducta). For this latest Oxperiment, Oxnard, CA-based Dr. No researches raw and rare psych from Turkey, Lebanon, Greece and Italy to formulate his antidote to wack samples and played-out loops. Spektrum - Enter the Spektrum CD/LP (Playhouse) ................................................................... As a band Spektrum are hard hitting tight 21st century funk with punk attitudes, think Kelis, Missy Elliot or Grace Jones collaborating with ESG, A Certain Ratio or 23 Skidoo. Lola Olafisoye's vocals send the shivers down your spine and slap you in your face at the same time. The whole sound is brought together by the classically trained multi instrumentalist Gabriel Olegavich who seems to orchestrate the band in a similar fashion to Matthew Herbert. Sick, sexy, funked to the max and downright dirty. Sunn 0))) - Oracle LP (Southern Lord) ................................................................... Vinyl only limited release from everyone's favorite doom band. Originally composed for a live performance collaboration with the New York sculptor Banks Violette at the Maureen Paley Gallery in London. The flip features the use of the tone generating Buddha Boxes, run through the sunn backline and recorded at maximum volume which of course yielded maximum results! Also features Atsuo Mizuno (Boris) on drums and Joe Preston (Earth, Melvins, Thrones) on jackhammer! Linda Thompson - Versatile Heart (Rounder) ................................................................... Steely yet vulnerable, comforting yet haunting, her singing is never less than riveting. On Versatile Heart, only her 3rd solo album, Linda demonstrates that, in addition to being an incomparable interpreter, she is an equally astonishing songwriter - stitching traditional British Isles music and more contemporary influences into a sound that is expressive and direct, yet timeless. Other writers represented include her son Teddy, daughter Kamila, Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, and Rufus Wainwright, performed as a duet with Antony. VA - Kompakt Total 8 CD/LP (Kompakt) ................................................................... This is the annual Total showcase featuring Kompakt's shining moments of the past year, plus a peek into what to expect from the label in the future. As many fans know, Kompakt remains faithful to the 12" single, and the Total series serves as a hook-up to many of these vinyl releases for those who haven't had the chance to keep up with the pace of Kompakt's steady stream of music. Includes Schaeben & Voss, Justus Kohncke, Reinhard Voigt, Thomas/Mayer, Burger/Voigt, Jurgen Paape + Boy Schaufler, Superpitcher, Mikkel Metal, DJ Koze, Kaito. Two tracks are entirely exclusive to the LP. Blossom Toes - If Only for a Moment (Marmalade, 1969) ...................................................................  Though an entirely different beast than their highly-regarded 1967 psych-pop classic "We are Ever so Clean," Blossom Toes' 1969 follow-up album "If Only for a Moment" is just as compelling.  Shedding the highly-produced and ornately quirky elements of their previous work, you can hear the Toes rediscovering the joys of being in a real rock band. Filled with their pioneering harmonized guitars, amazing drums, great songwriting and killer psychedelic production touches, this is a serious departure from "We are Ever so Clean," but just as much of a classic.  The super-heavy and undeniably classic epic "Peace Loving Man" alone is worth the price of admission. 2007 reissue CD/LP on Sunbeam contains 7 bonus tracks. - Cyrus Kevin Coyne - Matching Head and Feet (Virgin, 1975) ...................................................................  The music of Kevin Coyne has consumed much of my free time lately. His discography is dauntingly large and usually challenging in one way or another, but I've yet to come across what I'd call a bad album. This one stands out as one of the best I've heard so far. His lead guitarist here is a post-Tomorrow / pre-Police Andy Summers, but it's Coyne's voice and the songs themselves that blow me away. Coyne sings like a deranged Roger Daltry or a creepier Joe Cocker, and his story-songs are often both humorous and heartbreaking. Many of them are based upon people he met as a social worker for the mentally handicapped. But much like Randy Newman at his best, he really sells it, never sounding overly affected. There's also a real affinity with the cracked, loony Brit tradition of Syd Barrett, Kevin Ayers, Big Boy Pete, Julian Cope, Robyn Hitchcock, TV Personalities etc. - Jason The Swirlies - Blonder Tongue Audio Baton (Taang!, 1993) ...................................................................  As the resident shoegaze expert, it is part of my duty to educate the masses that dreampop did not just come from the shores of Britain. While their UK predecessors were perhaps louder and shaggier, the US had its own thing. Boston's Swirlies combined their own city's indie pop, a la the Pixies, with a love for the guitar heroics of Sonic Youth and the thick wash of My Bloody Valentine. The end result is a gorgeous document of lo-fi psychedelia with boy/girl vocals, noise interludes, strange samples and overdriven guitars that make for some of the finest early 90s American noisepop alongside Lilys, Medicine, Mercury Rev and Drop Nineteens. - Heath More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://myspace.com/landlockedbton and http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------ We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
