Hello to all the new faces of Bloomington, we hope you enjoy our town as much as we do. Our little oasis of the midwest is quite remarkable, so please don't take it for granted. Now that you've bought your books, dontcha think you need some music, too? Take some time away from your digital lifestyle and embrace your own physical nature, build a library of music and feel your happiness expand. Select New Arrivals for the Week of 08/28/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass CD/LP (Definitive Jux) ................................................................... None Shall Pass documents not only a vast amount of personal change that Aesop experienced over the past 2 years, but also deftly depicts scenes and stories relative to all ages of life. The majority of production duties have been handled by Aesop's longtime partner Blockhead, while label mates El-P and Rob Sonic each make offerings. Aesop proves once again why he is at the top of the verbose underground hip hop heap. Angels of Light - We Are Him (Young God) ................................................................... Angels of Light is the main vehicle for Michael Gira's music since he disbanded Swans in 1997. Gira is also known lately as the label master and in-house producer for Young God Records, responsible for the likes of Devendra Banhart, Akron/Family, and Lisa Germano, among many others, further widening the scope and influence of his 25 years of music-making. We Are Him, Angels' 5th album, is a potent new chapter in a fiercely individual and remarkable musical journey. Contributing musicians include Akron/Family and much, much more. Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals - Lifeline (Virgin) ................................................................... At the end of a 9 month European tour, Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals landed in a Paris recording studio and completed their new album, Lifeline, in just 7 days. The result: a soulful masterpiece with beautifully direct lyrics, undeniable grooves and an effortless energy that recalls the best works of Otis Redding, Bill Withers and Beggars Banquet-era Rolling Stones. Howling Hex - XI (Drag City) ................................................................... Writing songs on the road and playing them night after night led the Hex to this moment. A piece of every city can be heard on XI. Think of The Minutemen playing Blue Oyster Cult's Godzilla backwards (and underwater) to the post apocalyptic denizens of Hendrix's 1983 - but think fast because another song is coming and there's a riot going on. Guitar leads conversing with fat bass leads in front and behind you as saxophones wail before stripped down drums, the frenetic beating of the conga and other percussive instruments. Liars - Liars (Mute) ................................................................... The 4th album by Liars finds them back on the map after 2 albums that saw the band journey deep into the experimental wilderness. With lyrics about witches and twilit percussion experiments, these 11 tracks of spooked, discord-heavy rock, clanking grooves and skronky garage crunch suggest this band still have little to no interest in pandering to the mainstream. On the rockiest track they marshall white-hot guitar riffs and caterwauling vocals in a way that recalls The Rapture's pre-disco days; another track could almost be a lost track from Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy sessions, with 60s psychedelia tearing along in a dust cloud of feedback. Lyle Lovett - Its Not Big Its Large (Lost Highway) ................................................................... On his 13th album, the 4-time Grammy winner addresses the basics with his 36 piece band: love, life, death, and the fluidity of time itself. In many different songs the past intrudes on the present and the narrator finds strength to deal with the travails of today by putting them into historical perspective. This may sound heavy, but it's Lovett's gift to make the deep thoughts slide down like honey. His tone is not one of resignation, but more one of hope through acceptance. Madlib - Beat Konducta Vol 3-4: In India (Stones Throw) ................................................................... Madlib is recognized as one of the most creative and diverse producers in today's hip hop and indie music scene. His own work, under a variety of names and collaborations, ranges from hip hop to funk, electronic jazz and broken beat. He has been tapped for production work by hip hop luminaries Ghostface Killah and Talib Kweli in recent months. Much like little brother Oh No's Oxperiment, this brings a platter full thick chutney beats and breaks. New Buffalo - Somewhere, Anywhere (Arts & Crafts) ................................................................... Sally Seltmann is a soft-spoken songstress from Melbourne Australia. Her last album was named one of the Top 50 Albums of 2004 by Rolling Stone. She also penned the song "1234," the debut single on Feist's new album, The Reminder. The songs were written on a Thurmer piano that's been in the Seltmann family for over 100 years. The album embraces the concept of opposite experiences and contrasting moods: the innocent, naive and colourful, versus the dark, intimate and secret-like, the highs & lows, ego & shadow, masculine & feminine. No Age - Weirdo Rippers (Fat Cat) ................................................................... Formed from the ashes of the fondly-remembered Wives, LA's No Age purvey a stripped, essential, life-affirming, skewed take on pop delivered via a clearly-defined punk-rock aesthetic, taking in noise, energy, and melody in equal measure. Variously reminiscent of Black Dice, The Ramones, and My Bloody Valentine, Weirdo Rippers documents a fast-developing band hitting their stride. Deerhunter approved, check it out in our listening station! Odd Nosdam - Level Live Wires (Anticon) ................................................................... Odd Nosdam is to experimental hip-hop what Herbert is to disco. Although samples abound, it’s the field recordings (exploding SUVs, gang shootings) in his latest LP that make it a truly intriguing (and often moving) collection of cinematic, fuzzy bricolage. After one listen to ON's Level Live Wires, a single question remains: has gangster shoegaze actually been composed? - XLR8R Prinzhorn Dance School - s/t (DFA) ................................................................... Swiping their name from Dr Hans Prinzhorn, an early 20th century psychiatrist who assembled the largest collection of art by psychotic patients in Europe, PDS specialise in the kind of boy-girl harmonies and stripped back instrumentation that one expects after dropping their kids off at the military academy for a few years. Sharp as a whip and whole new levels of sparsedom. VA - Home Schooled CD/LP (Numero Group) ................................................................... You know Michael, Jermaine, Tito, Marlon and Jackie, but what about Altyrone Deno Brown, Michael Washington, or Little Murray & the Mantics? Home Schooled, the 16th record in Numero's library of the lost, looks at the unknown side of the early 70s kid soul revolution. Beyond the Osmonds, the Five Stairsteps, and the Brighter Side of Darkness lay hundreds of aspiring children (and parents) bent on becoming the next Michael. A detailed and photo stuffed booklet breaks down the history of the phenomena, while the disc straddles the line between historical artifact and wild mix tape. One of the most unique and mysterious guitarists to record for John Fahey's Takoma label, Robbie Basho ("real" name Daniel L. Robinson Jr.) was one of the first instrumenatlists to effectively combine traditional western folk music/fingerpicking with eastern mysticism and Indian raga. Originally an orphan, Robbie didn't realize his true identity until the morning after a night spent taking peyote on a mountaintop, when it was revealed to him that he was and had always been the 17th century Japanese poet, Basho. A great overview of Basho's Takoma recordings from 1967-68, Bashovia is a beautiful collection full of mind-boggling 12-string guitar playing, otherworldly east-meets-west raga and, ocassionally, Basho's unique and operatic voice. Solo guitar music that will truly take you somewhere else. Featuring liner notes written by Fahey soon before his death. - Cyrus Mark Hollis - s/t (Polydor, 1998) ................................................................... Hollis was the singer for 80s new-romantics Talk Talk, who are most recently famous for penning "It's My Life", which No Doubt covered a few years back. Talk Talk took a turn away from new-wave towards the end of the 80s to a more experimental chamber jazz, which also led them away from the chart success of their 80s period. The last two Talk Talk albums, Spirit of Eden (1988) and Laughing Stock (1991), are hugely influencial to quiet bands, "post-rock", and much more. Fast forward 7 years and Mark's final recording (he officially retired) is an even more sparse continuation. Achingly gorgeous, hauntingly stark, and beautifully recorded with only acoustic instrumentation (including horns, woodwinds, piano, etc), its sound somehow exists surrounding you, in the room with you. You can hear lips form the words, chairs creaking, fingers slide along their instrument. Essential for fans of late-era Talk Talk, David Sylvian, Red House Painters or Tindersticks. - Heath Robe. / Warmth split 7" (Black Horizons, 2007) ................................................................... This newly released split 7" features my favorite new group from Columbus (Indiana!), Rope. This guitar-bass-trombone (!) trio deal in lurching, near-ambient doom that goes nowhere fast, just leaving you with a vague creepy sonic residue in your brain. A seven inch record is perhaps not the best format to experience their extended dronescapes, but it's nice to have something on vinyl from these guys (they do have a number of CD-Rs available from us). Fans of Boris, SunnO))), or even a band like Main will dig this, plus it will harmonize well with your fridge. - Jason ...................................................................
