More new releases than you can shake a stick at. A stick, we say! A very big stick. A stick so large that we were intimidated to even do staff picks this week, for fear of people's short attention spans these days. We expect you to not make it deep enough into the Beacon to read our delightful tales of releases lost to the depths of time. Or even this sentence? Alas. We know you are sad, but yet also rejoicing because of all these lovely new goodies for ye: NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 09/11/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Adrian Orange & Her Band - s/t CD/LP (K) ................................................................... Adrian Orange is the young folk musician from Portland who titled himself Thanksgiving. After touring the country in 2006 (and playing Landlocked) with a massive band in two vans (including children and horn players and official dancers) and inventing a new kind of music and living, the band re-materialized in Dub Narcotic Studio in February 2007 to record their debut for K. It's the perfect combination of beautiful accident and deliberate symphony. Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam (Domino) ................................................................... Early releases from AC pulled each other apart in a kaleidoscope of ideas. Sung Tongs leapt out of the speakers full of sophisticated, primitive campfire hollers and harmonies. Feels was more mysterious and celestial, a little more introverted. In terms of its scale and vision Strawberry Jam feels like space dust and radar falling on the desert and making it bloom. It is the sound of a band spinning wildly and intoxicated, at the cusp of their powers, as thick and rich and sweet and colourful as it sounds. LP version in a week or two. Besnard Lakes - Casino Nanaimo 12" (Jagjaguwar) ................................................................... In 2007, Besnard Lakes released an album that quickly made it onto numerous and budding best-of-the-year lists by a whole range of music-listening pedigree. They also played 2 knock-out shows here in B-ton, the first right here at Landlocked HQ! Now these inspired Montrealers continue what they've started, re-stoking the flames and releasing two additional tracks. Side A is "Casino Nanaimo", a place where repetitive sound and lights engulf addicted gamblers all vying for space on the eternal wheel of fortune. The B Side is the unedited 9-minute version of "Devastation" from the Dark Horse album. Black Lips - Good Bad Not Evil (Vice) ................................................................... This succinctly epitomizes all that's special about Atlanta's favorite flower punk sons: the uncontained energy, undeniable songcraft, and unrivaled showmanship are all on full display, as is a newfound sense of the world around them. Songs like "Katrina" and "Bad Kids" spare none of the Black Lips' trademark smirk and smear, but also demonstrate a purpose and perspective not always at the forefront of the band's music. "Good Bad Not Evil" traffics in the kind of ragged rock harmony and garage swagger missing for too long. C.O.C.O. - Play Drums + Bass CD/LP (K) ................................................................... Up from the swamps of the death disco comes a new offering from the minimalist soul group all the heads call C.O.C.O. Olivia and Chris have been tapping the primal groove for a while now using only the most basic of instrumentation, but this time our explorers have decided to travel to the outer limits of the beat. Their mission is simple: "Play Drums + Bass" and that credo was the inspiration for their 3rd record. The musical spectrum continues to expand into the nether regions of dub reggae all the way to the sunny side of surf rock. Dirty Projectors - Rise Above CD/LP (Dead Oceans) ................................................................... You saw them at the Buskirk-Chumley a couple weeks ago, now hear the album. Among modern music makers, David Longstreth is a maverick: a loner and a rebel. From beginning to end, his new offering, "Rise Above," is a reimagining of Black Flag's seminal 1981 record "Damaged." But it is not a covers record. He attempted to rewrite his favorite adolescent album word for word, from memory. A lofty concept, it resounds with a kind of elegant simplicity of interlocking guitar parts and 3-part quirky vocal harmonies. Figurines - When the Deer Wore Blue (Control Group) ................................................................... Denmark's Figurines have a strong affection for 60s sounds. But unlike many other Scandinavian bands who are influenced by pre-punk and/or garage bands like The Sonics, Seeds, or Who, the Figurines' love for the 60s lies in the melodies like those created by The Zombies, Love, and Beach Boys. This record oozes good vibrations built upon lush, intricate arrangements. Film School - Hideout CD/LP (Beggars Banquet) ................................................................... Building on the band's pretty, shoegazer pop and richly textured space rock soundscapes by emphasizing powerful rhythms and beautiful melodies that take the songwriting to a new level. More like a sonic galaxy that engulfs you from all angles with layers of reverb, loops, and the interplay of male/female voices. Bonus 7" free with purchases while they last! The Go! Team - Proof of Youth CD/LP (Sub Pop) ................................................................... England's Go! Team play a fast and furious mix of 60s girl groups, 70s car chase TV themes, 80s lady MCs, and 90s guitar squalor. Their 2005 debut was critically lauded for its cheerleader anthems, syrupy string samples, and mad-as-a-hatter horn arrangements. This release bombs melodies into the stone age with its needle-in-the-red anti-production approach. It lurches from bubblegum pop to white noise in a heartbeat. Featuring Chuck D, Solex, and much more. The Good Life - Help Wanted Nights (Saddle Creek) ................................................................... The songs on the band's 4th album were initially meant as the soundtrack to a screenplay that Tim Kasher (Cursive) started writing in 2006. These songs seemed to describe moments of raw emotion more than chronicle a linear tale, so the group kept them as close to their original incarnations as possible, recording them true to form. The results are more stripped down and threadbare than previous Good Life creations. Group Inerane: Guitars From Agadez (Music of Niger) LP (Sublime Frequencies) ................................................................... Group Inerane is the now sound of the Tuareg Guitar Revolution sweeping across the Sahara Desert and inspired by the rebel musicians that started this music as a political weapon used to communicate from the Libyan Refugee camps in the 80s and 90s. 180 gram LP w/ gatefold jacket, limited pressing of 1000. Joe Henry - Civilians (Anti) ................................................................... Singer/songwriter Joe Henry has appeared mainly as a producer, working on career defining releases by Aimee Mann, Ani DiFranco, Elvis Costello, Solomon Burke, and most recently as producer and co-writer of "Strange Weirdos" (with Loudon Wainwright), the soundtrack to the film "Knocked Up". Songs of a new warmth and directness and a bold sense of melody that ride atop the cutting edge arrangements he's become known for. Features legendary songwriter Van Dyke Parks (Beach Boys' Smile) and guitar pioneer Bill Frisell. KTL - 2 LP (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... KTL is Stephen O'Malley (SUNNO))), Khanate) and Peter Rehberg (PITA) - a threatening collaboration taking in parallel worlds of extreme computer music and black metal. 2 is the devastatingly beautiful 4 part follow up to their acclaimed debut and was recorded in a former slaughterhouse, as well as a 16th century manor in the extreme west of France. Le Loup - Throne of the Third Heaven (Hardly Art) ................................................................... Inspired largely by Dante's "Inferno", the complex themes of this record are characterized by mounting tension and dramatic swells, coupled with an engaging emotional resonance that lifts just as much as it illuminates. A collection of rushing narratives that connect the individual struggle of each of us to the death of the universe in a manner that's both intimate and unshakably vital. Opening for Andrew Bird at the BCT on 9/19! Mono - Gone CD/3LP (Temporary Residence) ................................................................... Collecting all of Mono's rare and out-of-print non-album tracks, "Gone" perfectly displays their astounding growth, from the modest opening notes to the scorched finale. All tracks have been beautifully remastered from their original master tapes, with both formats boasting absurdly beautiful deluxe packaging. Nat Pwe: Folk & Pop Music of Myanmar Vol. 3 (Sublime Frequencies) ................................................................... Volume 3 documents the melodically ornamental and thundering sound of the Nat Pwe orchestra which is perhaps the last great internationally unknown musical juggernaut existing anywhere. Recorded live at various Nat Festivals throughout Myanmar and featuring some of Burma's most popular musicians, you'll witness impossible yet flawless execution of composition, wild free-form improvisation, ghost spirit possessed vocal divas, and the apex of high cultural art blending seamlessly with folkloric metaphysical ceremony. Oakley Hall - I'll Follow You CD/LP (Merge) ................................................................... Their 4th full-length and first for Merge is a crowning moment. The band has toured with M. Ward, Constantines, Calexico, Bright Eyes, and Gillian Welch. I'll Follow You fully captures the indelible sound that has inspired many to call Oakley Hall one of NY's best live bands. Americana they are not. The Hall is onto a whole new thing, and that thing is pure American rock music. Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn [2CD/3CD reissue] (Capitol) ................................................................... New reissue to mark the 40th anniversary of Pink Floyd's first album. The packaging resembles a cloth-covered book, and holds 3 CD discs, along with a 12-page reproduction Syd Barrett notebook. Discs 1 and 2 contain the full album, in both stereo and mono. Both newly remastered by James Guthrie. Disc 3 includes the singles Arnold Layne, See Emily Play, and Apples & Oranges, plus the B sides Candy And A Current Bun and Paintbox. Also, Interstellar Overdrive - Take 2 of the original sessions, and the 1967 stereo version of Apples And Oranges. Emma Pollock - Watch the Fireworks (4AD) ................................................................... Pollack is a former member of Glasgow legends The Delgados, and a founder of their pioneering Chemikal Underground record label. This debut combines lyrical twists and radiant melodies into a gorgeous and organic whole. The songs are fresh, modern, and personal, deftly constructed and littered with great hooks. Qui - Love's Miracle (Ipecac) ................................................................... Qui are an experimental LA band who mix just about every musical genre known to man. They are led by David Yow, the former frontman of infamous noisemakers The Jesus Lizard, who sounds like he gargles gravel in the morning. Sprawling, unpredictable, and about as forgiving as ebola. Shout Out Louds - Our Ill Wills CD/LP (Merge) ................................................................... Swedish band's sophomore effort is a collaborative effort between the group and producer Bjorn Yttling (of Peter, Bjorn and John). This band is all about the rush, emotion, and the infectious melodies that along with youth, good hair, and the endless pursuit of love, make up the foundation of all great pop music. Simian Mobile Disco - Attack Decay Sustain Release (Interscope) ................................................................... The electronic duo took to playing DJ sets after Simian gigs and thus the "mobile disco" took on a life. Coming into the spotlight with the ubiquitous remix of Justice vs Simian's "We Are Your Friends" SMD found themselves embraced by dance music fans who were looking for more. They purposefully choose to exclusively use analog equipment giving their arrangements a distinct, human quality. RIYL Justice, LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk, Hot Chip. Taken By Trees - Open Field (Rough Trade) ................................................................... The new project from Victoria Bergsman (vocalist for The Concretes). You may also recognize her from one of the most popular singles of last year - Peter, Bjorn and John's infectious "Young Folks". Her solo debut was aided by Bjorn on various instruments and string arrangements, and John on percussion, marimba, and vibraphone. A ravishing song cycle that speaks of love, loss, and trees. Kanye West - Graduation (Roc-A-Fella) ................................................................... Graduation is the 3rd LP in the Kanye West series of ground breaking albums. Though technically this earmarks a junior year, West's approach to crafting this album was very much senior. Kanye teams up with veterans Daft Punk and Edwin Birdsong on "Stronger"; as well as enlisting a little help from current chart topper T-Pain on "Good Life". Chris Martin of Coldplay appears, too. Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth [3CD reissue] (Domino) ................................................................... Young Marble Giants appeared on the British music scene in the early 80s, releasing one perfect album and a handful of tracks. This deluxe 3xCD package is the definitive collection contains every piece of music and includes liner notes from Simon Reynolds, an unreleased Peel Session, and a 32-page booklet of unpublished photos, old gig posters, and other publicity memorabilia. VA - Brazil 70 After Tropicalia: New Directions in Brazilian Music ................................................................... Brazil 70 follows Brazilian music in the aftermath of Tropicalia as the country's dictatorship entered its most oppressive phase. Musicians from the Tropicalia period of the late-60s such as Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, Rita Lee (Os Mutantes) and Gal Costa entered a new phase mixing rock, funk, samba and soul alongside a wealth of like-minded new artists. With the constant threat of imprisonment, artists nevertheless managed to produce radical music that, like Tropicalia before it, managed to deal with questions of identity, sexuality and society in a revolutionary manner.
