Hello and welcome to autumnal jacket weather. And also to an exciting new experimental Beacon format. Our new arrivals are now slightly genre-fied, to help you find what you seek as well as discover new treats for your ears. Tell us what you think but do realise that categorizing is tough, so please be gentle with your critique - we are very sensitive! Enjoy: NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 09/18/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) General / Rock / Indie / Pop / Psych / Etc ------------------------------------------------------------------ Akron/Family - Love is Simple (Young God) ................................................................... This record comes the closest to bridging the gap between the chaos, rock action, tribal bongo-banging and sentimental sing-alongs of their live shows and the necessarily more cerebral, or at least worked-over and layered process of recording in the studio. There are beautiful songs and harmonies on this album, and also wild and weird jams, all in the service of their chosen Deity, or Nothingness, or LOVE, or whatever it is they're on about. Black Francis - Bluefinger (Cooking Vinyl) ................................................................... The Pixies iconic lead singer Frank Black dons his decades-old moniker - Black Francis - and, imbued by the spirit of eccentric Dutch painter/musician Herman Brood, recorded a brand new set of 11 songs, collectively titled Bluefinger. Crescent - Little Waves (Fat Cat) ................................................................... First album in 3 years from this cult band that first emerged in the mid-90s, as part of the incredibly vibrant Bristol post-rock scene that included artists like Flying Saucer Attack, Movietone and Third Eye Foundation. Besides the more drone-focused aspects or shadowy minimalism of those groups, Crescent have traditionally embraced brawling full-bodied rock tinged with murky, lo-fi production, for a more visceral experience. Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene) - Spirit If (Arts & Crafts) ................................................................... Spirit If is the first in a series of Broken Social Scene Presents albums. This effort from Kevin Drew unfolds like an emotional comic book. Drew's songwriting addresses all his favourite topics: f*cking, fighting, fearing and hope. Both Drew and Brendan Canning, the co-founders of Broken Social Scene, decided to approach making records as solo projects. In the process, the social scene community participated, playing key supporting roles, returning to the creative process that was the initial spark for BSS and giving birth to this new series. Fog - Ditherer CD/LP (Lex) ................................................................... From their beginnings in vocal electronica Fog have mutated into one of the most innovative of the new wave of American alternative rock bands. The trio of Andrew Broder, Mark Erickson & Tim Glenn have spent the last two years touring as a rock combo, opening for Deerhoof, Notwist and Low and took time out to record the songs for 'Ditherer' with Low's engineer Tom Herbers. 'Ditherer' is 11 songs of hard edged leftfield rock and roll featuring collaborations with Alan and Mimi from Low, Mount Eerie, Andrew Bird and Why? His Name is Alive - Xmmer (Reincarnate) ................................................................... HNIA is well known for their ethereal, late night moods and on here the band picks straight up where last year's excellent Detrola left off and fires up an army of homemade electronics and freaked out songs that are equal parts organic and mysterious. David Bowie put Detrola in his top 10 for 2006 and said it has "an early 70s vibe plus it comes on like Karen Carpenter." Strikingly diverse in sound, texture and genre, these songs concisely reprise the entire range of sonic quality and stylistic jumps found within their diverse catalog. Les Savy Fav - Let's Stay Friends (French Kiss) ................................................................... Let's Stay Friends is a record about Les Savy Fav's unwillingness to give up. It's a resolution to defy the forces which wear away at our innocence and enthusiasm. As musicians, the record declares their ultimate goals of being together, writing, and performing on their own terms, loosed from the thicket of the professional independent music business which has grown up all around them. The band's approach to music in relation to changes it has witnessed in the music scene extends into a sophisticated metaphor all people can relate to about how we marry the consistent with the inconsistent. Thurston Moore - Trees Outside the Academy (Ecstatic Peace) ................................................................... Thurston's first solo outing since 1995's Psychic Hearts. Unlike Psychic Hearts' skeletal trio rock, this new jammer has a far fuller bouquet of sonic depth and proves this Sonic dude to have a very real songwriting life outside of the legendary Sonic Youth. Thurston recorded primarily on acoustic guitar and bass, laying down the core of the tunes with drummer compatriot Steve Shelly and violinist Samara Lubelski, a noted player from MV/EE and The Golden Road, Hall of Fame and other awesome gatherings as well as solo artiste. Add in a guitar solo from J Mascis and vocals from Christina Carter and enjoy. Rogue Wave - Asleep at Heaven's Gate CD/LP (Brushfire) ................................................................... Last year was a rollercoaster ride for the Wave: drummer Pat Spurgeon had a kidney transplant (thanks for your donations at Landlocked!), keyboardist Gram LeBron lost his father, singer Zach Rogue had a daughter and the band recruited a new bass player (welcome back to Bloomington, Evan!) But instead of falling apart, they converted all their heartbreak, love, hurt, pain, elation and insight into an affecting and beguiling record. You heard some of these songs at Landlocked last year when they played to a packed house, now check out the recorded versions. Songs of the Green Pheasant - Gyllyng Street (Fat Cat) ................................................................... Marking a departure from the beautiful 4-track folk-haze of the debut album, Gyllyng sees the artist take a big step forwards whilst retaining the isolated individuality that marks them out as a truly unique voice in the contemporary out-folk milieu. Retaining something of the cloudy, dreamlike and intimate cocooning space of its predecessor, it also moves further away from folk song-form towards a richly atmospheric and ambitious modus, heavily tinged with the influence of early 90s indie. A deep, meditation on space and place, it is beautifully conceived as an organic whole rather than a collection of parts. Wooden Shjips - s/t (Holy Mountain) ................................................................... Wooden Shjips, a quartet from San Francisco heavily influenced by the experimentalism of psychedelia, classical minimalism, and garage rock excess, started as an experiment in rhythmic primitivism and group improvisation. The current roster brings a more structured rock approach to its performances, utilizing a traditional lineup of drums, bass, organ, guitar and vocals. They arrive via the 70s Germanic-guitar lunacy of Guru Guru and the confrontational repetition of Velvet Underground. Spacemen 3 channeling Doors playing Stooges. Bonus CD comes w/ early recordings and vinyl tracks you might have missed. Also This Week: ........................................ Donnas - Bitchin' (Purple Feather) Health - s/t (Lovepump United) Joy Division - LP Reissues (Rhino) Eddie Vedder - Into the Wild OST (J) WZT Hearts - Threads Rope Spell Making Your Bones (Carpark) Electronic / Hip-Hop / Soul / Funk / Jazz / Etc ------------------------------------------------------------------ Jamie Cullum - In the Mind of (District 6) ................................................................... Born and raised in the UK, Jamie Cullum was obsessed with all types of music from an early age - rock, hip-hop, folk, dance, acid jazz, blues. He discovered straight ahead jazz as a teenager, through artists like Herbie Hancock, Mingus and Miles, but also showed an interest in the groundbreaking Steely Dan LPs purchased by his brother Ben, who now co-writes much of Jamie's material. This is an exciting glimpse into the diverse musical mind of a modern day jazz genius, and includes 2 new tracks. A wild mix of songs! Mu-Ziq - Duntisbourne Abbots Soulmate Devastation Technique (Planet Mu) ................................................................... Under the Mu-Ziq moniker, Mike Paradinas, the Planet Mu founder is a key innovator who brought electronic music to a wider audience in the 90s, pushing boundaries and rattling heads with a consistent stream of releases, each exploring new realms of consciousness. It's been 4 years since the whirlwind of chaos his last album brought, and his new one is a more reflective body of work. Introspective and melancholic, he revisits his roots in the early 90s ambient techno scene pioneered by The Black Dog, Aphex Twin, and himself. Percee P - Perseverance (Stones Throw) ................................................................... NYC underground emcee Percee P was in the game for three decades before dropping this, his solo debut. His tightly woven rhymes expand and collapse on one another in a game of linguistic twister. Madlib's production work is equally mercurial, interweaving strands of noisy world music into lo-fi beat pastiche. No other MC has waited as long to record a debut, but what Percee's done in the meantime has made him a legend. Wiley - Playtime is Over (Ninja Tune) ................................................................... A blazing return to the experimental crucible of the East London music known as grime, offering everything that is most brutal, cutting edge, funny, clever, terrifying and moving about the sound and the world which created it. Over the course of 15 tracks, Wiley boasts of his pre-eminence, tells stories of his life and background, reveals a sensitive side and splatters his life and thoughts and feelings over beats in a way which hasn't been bettered in the short but incident-packed history of a scene whose acceptance is barely 5 years old. Also This Week: ........................................ Baron Zen - At the Mall: Remixes 2CD (Stones Throw) The Bug Ft Killa P & Flow Dan - Skeng + Kode9 mix 12" (Hyperdub) John Coltrane - Interplay 5CD (Prestige) Sixtoo - Jackals and Vipers in Envy of Man (Ninja Tune) Heavy / Punk / Metal / Doom / Etc ------------------------------------------------------------------ Dropkick Murphys - The Meanest of Times (Born & Bred) ................................................................... DKM come out swinging with their 6th studio album; a collection of tales about family, loyalty, and remembering where you came from. It contains all the best elements of the band's sound: a complex distillation of classic punk rock, Celtic folk, and American rock'n'roll. It puts the band's diversity, intensity, and sincerity on full display. For fans of The Pogues, The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, AC/DC, Bruce Springsteen. High on Fire - Death Is This Communion (Relapse) ................................................................... The almighty High on Fire reemerge from the shadows to conquer the masses with their signature brand of brazen metal. Matt Pike's unmistakable guitar playing and throaty war cry lead the charge, while Des Kensel's massive drumming takes on a new life and pushes the beast onward more urgently than ever. From the rampaging Rumors of War and Fury Whip, through the hypnotic riffs of Ethereal and the album's title track, Death Is This Communion might be High on Fire's masterwork. Produced and recorded by Jack Endino. Also This Week: ........................................ Between the Buried and Me - Colors (Victory) Ministry - The Last Sucker (13th Planet) Motion City Soundtrack - Even If It Kills Me (Epitaph) Country / Americana / Folk / Blues / Songwriter / Etc ------------------------------------------------------------------ Michael Hurley - The Ancestral Swamp (Gnomonsong) ................................................................... The 20th full-length album by legendary rambler, cartoonist, outsider folk singer, and guitarist Michael Hurley. A batch of new vittles and encores of some of his classic tunes, Ancestral Swamp bubbles with laid-back ease and tremolodic goodness. Most songs have the simplest of arrangements: Hurley singing solo, accompanied by his guitar, Wurlizter, or fiddle. As with all his albums, once one sets the needle down, one is put in a certain peace and place. His voice and songs are unique, shuffling with characters and visions clear and wild. VA - Best of the Johnny Cash Show CD/2xDVD (Sony) ................................................................... Holy toledo! Double DVD collecting highlights from 1969-1971 from Cash's variety show. Includes live performances from Cash, Bob Dylan, Louis Armstrong, Stevie Wonder, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Linda Ronstadt, Kris Kristofferson, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Tammy Wynette, Marty Robbins, Pete Seeger, Carter Family, Bill Monroe, Derek & the Dominos, Roy Orbison, Hank Jr, Merle Haggard, Chet Atkins, Carl Perkins, Glen Campbell, Ray Charles, Everly Bros and MORE! Also This Week: ........................................ Doyle Bramhall - Is It News (Yep Roc) Jana Hunter - Carrion EP (Gnomonsong) STAFF PICKS! These are all available at Landlocked right now! Hurry! ------------------------------------------------------------------ Dancing Cigarettes - The School Of Secret Music 1980-83 (Turnstile) ................................................................... One of the best bands to ever call Bloomington home, the Dancing Cigarettes had a brief but creative career. The best part of their dancable, new-wave sound is collected here, with the notable exception of their Gulcher single. They were sort of the Talking Heads of their scene, or the Devo. But they had their own thing happening too. Arty for sure, and definitely sounding "of their time", but timeless pop all the same. "Pop Doormat" alone should secure their place in Indiana Music History. I'm told by Cigs drummer John Terrill that these are the last remaining copies, so act fast! - Jason Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom - Days of Mars (DFA) ................................................................... Delia and Gavin are artists, but don't let that scare you. They embrace all mediums, from sculpture, music and fashion to dance, film, and magick. Their work is not a collision of egos, but rather the reflection of the core of the two together. Musically, the sound here can be lumped in with the works of early electronic artists such as Tangerine Dream, Popol Vuh, Goblin, Kraftwerk or Terry Riley. Pulsing analog momentum, a delicious potion, delivering 4 distinct levitations to the 7 chakra. Layer upon layer of simple keyboard patterns draws you into their innerverse instead of sending you out to orbit. Far beyond instrumental new-age cheeze, this is the real deal, the music you expect to hear as you spy the mothership's green glow over a Peruvian village. - Heath Michael Yonkers Band - Microminature Love (Sub Pop) ................................................................... I knew I would like this the first time I saw the cover; nerdy looking dude in basement cradling homemade double-necked guitar whilst surrounded by tape machines, amps and a jungle of interconnecting wires. However, I wasn't entirely prepared for just how ridiculously great it actually is. The 1968 album was recorded live in one session at a local studio in his hometown of Minneapolis, but wasn't released at the time. Sounding something like an angrier version of the Red Krayola circa 1967 with Syd Barrett on lead guitar, this album left me speechless. Incredibly modern and fresh sounding for a 40-yr-old record, jam-packed with great songs, terrifyingly effective production/arrangement (all done live!) and some of the coolest, guitar riffs/effects I've ever heard. In addition to this stone-cold classic, we at Landlocked were recently blessed with 3 NEW Yonkers releases, including the DeStijl reissue of his amazing psych-folky 2nd album, "Grimwood." - Cyrus ...................................................................
