Sorry to upset y'all, but we ditched the genre-fying from our previous issue, we hate applying labels to music (even though we do it in our store) and realise that you don't just listen to one type of music, so we hope you continue to like our old formatless format. But we do have a gift - if you pre-order the new Jens Lekman CD or LP from us between now and October 5th, you will be given a free bonus EP. Email or stop on by and let us know. And further apologies, I never said I was a weatherman - never trust my forecast... Autumn, where are you? NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 09/25/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Devendra Banhart - Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon (XL) ................................................................... If you think you know Devendra, think again - here he has expanded his sound remarkably and created his finest album in years. Recorded in Topanga Canyon in the Santa Monica mountains. Neil Young lived there while recording "After The Gold Rush" and the area has also been home to Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Joni Mitchell, Mick Fleetwood, and members of The Doors. Those ghosts inhabit the sound and vibe of these recording sessions. Banhart's whole "freak folk" tag is gone, replaced with this classic, gorgeous rock album. Some songs are fragile and solipsistic, others have a pronounced tropicalia influence, and still others are wildly electric and epic. Sir Richard Bishop - Polytheistic Fragments (Drag City) ................................................................... As a founding member of ethno-improv pioneers Sun City Girls, Bishop has spent the last 25+ years perplexing, amazing, and alienating audiences. In 2005, he began extensive touring as a solo artist armed with only an acoustic guitar. One can perhaps recognize the influences of Django Reinhardt, Jimmy Page, and Ravi Shankar in his playing, though he has fused these and other influential elements into his own unique style. Brasilintime - Batucada Con Discos DVD (Mochilla) ................................................................... The journey of Brasilian music to the US had begun with the success of Carmen Miranda and her band leader Dorival Caymi in the late 40s. This exchange reached a peak with the travel of Stan Getz and Cannonball Adderley to Brasil and the arrival of the early stars of Bossa Nova (Joao Gilberto, Sergio Mendes, Joao Donato) here. Bossa Nova was simultaneously an attempt to internationalize samba in a new way and respond to the cool jazz of Chet Baker and Stan Getz. When Jay Dee (Dilla) sampled Stan Getz and Gilberto in the early 90s for The Pharcyde, he was participating in a conversation that went back to Carmen Miranda and beyond. So, J Rocc, Cut Chemist, Babu & Madlib go to Brasil. Cave Singers - Invitation Songs (Matador) ................................................................... Seattle's Cave Singers debut with a rural blend of homespun mystery and folk music approached by way of punk rock, or an updated version of the 'Anthology Of American Folk Music' You might hear bits of Calexico, Iron & Wine, Devendra, or Lindsey Buckingham in their dense and eerie sound. Singer Pete Quirk's appealingly nasal voice simultaneously echoes Arlo Guthrie and a mosquito's buzz. Catch them opening for Black Mountain at the Bluebird on October 14th. The Decemberists - Perfect Crime #2 [remixes] 12" ................................................................... Exclusive single from The Decemberists with remixes by A Touch of Class, Diplo and Junior Boys - Nice! Taking one of the most upbeat and danceable tracks from their recent blockbuster release, Crane Wife, and turning it up about 10 notches. You won't find this anywhere else in town, guaranteed. Dethklok - Dethalbum (Williams St) ................................................................... The full length record Metalocalypse fans have been begging for. Premiering last year on Adult Swim, Metalocalypse centers around the exploits of the biggest, most metalest band in the world, Dethklok. As the band goes about their daily affairs, the evil Tribunal tries in vain to stop Dethklok from expanding their empire. Each episode features a new song from the band and now the best of those tracks have been expanded, re-recorded and put together with all new songs to make the Dethklok album fans have been clamoring for. Prepare for an onslaught of bone-crunching Nordic riffs that will force you to your knees. Dragons - BFI (Ninja Tune) ................................................................... Previously unissued album from the late 60s by The Dragons featuring Darryl, Dennis and Doug Dragon and friends. These jazzy slices of psych-pop caught the ears of Ninja Tune nearly 40 years after they were recorded. Imagine Brian Wilson during his 'sandbox' days jamming with a few members of Steely Dan. Darryl went on to play with the Beach Boys and become The Captain, alongside Tenille. RIYL Stereolab, United States of America, Free Design, etc. Steve Earle - Washington Square Serenade (New West) ................................................................... The title and opening songs here are as much a celebration of NYC as his breakthrough Guitar Town was an evocation of his previous home in Nashville. His wife, Allison Moorer, harmonizes beautifully with her husband. The result is a new chapter in Earle's career, an album unlike any he's previously recorded, produced by John King of the Dust Brothers (Beck, Beastie Boys). Jose Gonzalez - In Our Nature (Mute) ................................................................... Though Gonzalez spent a great deal of time writing these new songs - playing them over and over into a voice recorder until he was confident in their arrangements - the actual recording of the album happened very quickly, taking less than two weeks in the studio to record ten songs. While it is sonically similar to Veneer, In Our Nature shows Gonzalez' growth as a songwriter. Displaying a heightened emphasis on melody and strong, focused lyrics - the album is a dark combination of softness and anger that is at once mesmerizing, intimate and hauntingly epic. Coming to the Buskirk this winter! Heliocentrics - Out There (Stones Throw) ................................................................... In an alternative galaxy, where the orbits of Hip-Hop, Funk, Jazz, Psychedelic, Electronic, Avante-Garde and Ethnic music all revolve around "The One" - that's where you might find The Heliocentrics. A listen to a song or two reveals no small influence from the funk universe of James Brown. But there's also the disorienting asymmetry of Sun Ra's music. The cinematic scope of Ennio Morricone. The sublime fusion of David Axelrod. But the Heliocentrics' music isn't retro. It's brand new and it's timeless. They have well-placed fans in the likes of Madlib (featured on various Yesterdays New Quintet releases) and DJ Shadow (the band backed him on tour), who will tell you that this band is it. Iron and Wine - The Shepherd's Dog (Sub Pop) ................................................................... Iron And Wine's most ambitious and accomplished recording to date, and also the most satisfying. This whole album breathes with an extended line-up of instruments and styles. Its seductive rhythms percolate and undulate. Shepherd's Dog is informed by a sensuality that brings a dreamscape to life. Southern gothic literature to sound. Free bonus CD w/ purchase! Bettye LaVette - The Scene of the Crime (Anti) ................................................................... Her last release brought well-deserved recognition to this R&B maverick who's been recording since the early 60s. To make music this raw and direct, Bettye enlisted "dirty south" rockers The Drive By Truckers as her backup band for her almost autobiographical new album. With swampy guitars, slippery Wurlitzer piano, and a driving backline, this record conjures up the spirit of great loose 70s bands like the Faces while offering Bettye an urgent, vital setting for her razor-sharp vocals. Recorded in Muscle Shoals, AL. Magik Markers - BOSS (Ecstatic Peace) ................................................................... Recorded in the cavernous dark with producer Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth) working the boards like a diviner, BOSS documents the Markers with a previously unheard fidelity and orchestration. Guitarist Elisa Ambrogio's notes form question and hatchet marks with equal measure. With a mix of blues simplicity, an almost Sonny Sharrock wailing and a janky Americana punk reminiscent of Pat Place and Roky Erickson, she avoids preciousness like a rash. Drummer Peter Nolan plays like Rashid Ali squeezed into the Teutonic leather pants of Faust, hell hounds at his heels but he just can't be bothered. Mountain Home - s/t (Language of Stone) ................................................................... Mountain Home project a earthen visage, hazy and poetic, defiant in their stance. Press releases rep Mountain Home as a 1+1 songwriting team, but on record they stretch to a sextet including J. Emery Blatchley (vocals, guitar, harmonium), Kristin Sherer (dulcimer, etc), Ilya Monosov (banjo, guitar, hurdy gurdy), Margaret Wienk of Fern Knight, Espers' main man Greg Weeks, and the ever lovely vocals of Marissa Nadler. Mum - Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy (Fat Cat) ................................................................... Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy is a colourful, twitching, playful work of art, full of life-affirming energy. Exuding an otherworldly, almost magical aura, Mum make sonically warm, richly melodic experimental music married effortlessly to a pop sensibility. The band uses an array of instruments (guitars, bass, drums, synths, laptops, cello, accordion, mutated brass, and mouth trumpet, to name a few) alongside crisply-programmed electronic washes, beats and bleeps, blurring the distinction between live band and electronic programming. Red Krayola w/ Art & Language - Sighs Trapped By Liars (Drag City) ................................................................... The faint-hearted might want to swallow something calming, because 30 years has mellowed the various parties not at all. Those expecting a further trip into the radical leftist pamphleteering of the former works will have to listen closely; these are new songs for new days. Perspectives are taken from quotes, exhibits and jokes of history and translated into material that addresses the state of the art. Lyrical contributions were put to music and played by Mayo Thompson, accompanied by Tom Watson, John McEntire, Noel Kupersmith and Jim O'Rourke. Stars - In Our Bedroom After the War (Arts & Crafts) ................................................................... Stars fourth studio album is their most confident and compelling work to date, an album that showcases the 7 years of experience they share as a band. It was recorded at the Warehouse Studios in Vancouver, BC and mixed by Joe Chiccarelli (White Stripes, The Shins, Morrissey). For a limited time, In Our Bedroom After The War will include a bonus DVD featuring a 55-minute documentary of Stars' live performances and interviews while touring Set Yourself on Fire. Supermayer - Save the World (Kompakt) ................................................................... Supermayer is Michael Mayer & Superpitcher. The union of Kompakt's most-loved DJs have produced a labor of love and creative leap for both that will keep listeners grinning ear-to-ear from beginning to end. The album places our two superheroes along the edges of the world of techno-bliss with a trumpet, saxophone, acoustic guitar, melodica, flute, a vast array of percussive instruments used to defeat those electronic purists who would not dance. There are enough pounding dance beats, stratospheric synth washes and electrified robot voices in their arsenal to slay even the most stubborn of rhythm-haters. Tunng - Good Arrows (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... The third album from this pastoral pop band is a totally immersive record, enveloping the listener in Tunng's wyrd world. Taking influences from Icelandic prog rock, choral music, and film soundtracks, Good Arrows marks a significant development for Tunng - they've expanded beyond the awkwardly applied folktronica label to become a full-fledged (if experimentally skewed) pop band. Two Gallants - s/t (Saddle Creek) ................................................................... Childhood friends since age 5, Adam Stephens and Tyson Vogel have sustained longevity that few people, let alone band members, can claim. Merging intelligent lyrics that often integrate historical references and human experiences beyond their own familiarity, they captivate listeners with their unique breed of folk, punk, and blues. Adam's raw melodies and razor sharp vocals deliver haunting, dirgy poetics amidst Tyson's synergistic drumming style and striking harmonies, further defining Two Gallants' sound. Working for a Nuclear Free City - Businessmen & Ghosts (Deaf, Dumb & Blind) ................................................................... Unafraid to wear their influences on their sleeves, you're confronted by the familiar Manchester swagger, a thumping homage to The Stone Roses. As the album progresses you identify the impact of other great 90s indie acts: Spiritualized, My Bloody Valentine. By no means derivative though, WFANFC are smart enough to update the classic sounds they reference. Other songs hint at the band's sophisticated electronically-enhanced production skills, an element of their sound that informs the kind of complex, textured shoegaze contemplation you'd find in the work of artists like Ulrich Schnauss. Recommended! Steven Wright - I Still Have A Pony (Comedy Central) ................................................................... After almost 25 years in the making, the most rumored comedy album is finally hitting the streets. As the elder statesman of bizarre one liners, Wright has had a decades long career creating the smartest, surrealist, oddball comedy out there, delivered in his characteristic deadpan. His first album, "I Have A Pony", was Grammy nominated when it was released in 1985 and has sold nearly a million copies. "I Still Have A Pony" contains the best of 20+ years of new material and has already been critically acclaimed. VA - People Take Warning: Murder Ballads & Disaster Songs 3CD (Tompkins Square) ................................................................... "In the late 20s and early 30s, the Depression gripped the Nation. It was a time when songs were tools for living. A whole community would turn out to mourn the loss of a member and to sow their songs like seeds. This collection is a wild garden grown from those seeds." - Tom Waits. Produced and annotated by the Grammy winning team of Chris King and Hank Sapoznik with an introduction by Waits, the accompanying 48-page 3CD anthology designed by Grammy winning Susan Archie brims with many eye-popping historic images never before reproduced. Hurry! ------------------------------------------------------------------ Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway (Jet Set 2003, Caldo Verde 2007) ................................................................... Mark Kozelek was known throughout the 90s for his output as Red House Painters. Over the course of 4+ albums on 4AD, he and his band of unmerry men laid down a somber bed of rich, mostly acoustic tunes. Known for slow, haunting melodies and heartbreaking lyrics (akin to Nick Drake), Kozelek parted ways with 4AD when he evolved into something a bit more rock'n'roll - extended Crazy Horse electric guitar solos filled completely reworked versions of songs by Yes, The Cars and Wings. Then came the acoustic AC/DC cover album. And covers of KISS, John Denver, Christmas classics and Modest Mouse. Somewhere amongst this, he released an amazing album under this new name - a revisit to his past sound but updated with a new confidence and a slightly expanded sound. Warm nostalgia abounds throughout and creates an atmosphere might just change your day in the same way that a scene from a film resonates for days, weeks. 2-CD reissue features six additional tracks. - Heath The Tree Community - The Christ Tree (Pomegranate 1975, Hand-Eye 2006) ................................................................... No matter one's religious persuasion, we all like let our freak flag fly once in a while. And this traveling born-again Christian community certainly let it unfurl all the way. Founded in a NYC loft in the early 70s, these spirit-filled post-hippies soon took their show on the road, bringing their theatrical, pan-ethnic (dare I say psychedelic?) choral folk music to all who would hear for a good part of the decade. Sitars, flutes, guitars, harps, bells, hand drums, and all kinds of other things bowed and plucked blend to become the missing link between the Incredible String Band and the modern day beard-core of Devendra et al, as well as the long-form psych jams of bands like Sunburned and JOMF. This 4-CD collection includes the group's two LPs as well as two live performances recored at the Abbey of Gethsemani (Thomas Merton's abbey) in Kentucky. Also available as a single disc, condensed version. - Jason Wooden Shjips - S/T (Holy Mountain, 2007) ................................................................... My fave new band of the moment, Wooden Shjips are emerging as the rightful heirs to the San Francisco psychedelic throne. Their limited vinyl-only EPs and singles got them some truly glowing press attention from, among others, Byron Coley (Wire) and David Fricke (Rolling Stone), raising the bar fairly high for this, their debut full-length. This album marries killer Krautrock-inspired grooves with righteously fuzzed-out organ and guitar lines, all intertwining with and blurred by the most tape-echo drenched vocals this side of Comets on Fire. It's not all just fuzzy, over-the-top psychedelic mayhem, though. The emphasis here is more on the interplay of the rhythm section and the over-all sound picture than it is on singling out one player. First run of the CD comes with a bonus disc containing all of their critically-acclaimed pre-album vinyl output, all of which is just as good as (if not ocassionally better than) the album material. - Cyrus ...................................................................
