Welcome... this is an odd week for new releases as it seems nearly everything got bumped back a week to make next week super thick with new music. No matter, we always believed that releasing your music on the off week gets you more attention with less competition. Ain't the industry fascinating? No? Oh alright just read then, geez: NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 10/16/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) The Blakes - s/t (Light in the Attic) ................................................................... The early influences of Garnet (guitar, vocals) and Snow Keim (bass, vocals) were Hank Williams and Brian Wilson. The brothers busked all around the US, writing songs in hostels and motel bathrooms, finally ending up in Seattle. There they met animalistic, mesmerizing drummer Bob Husak and asked him to join the band. The trio hit the road and has been touring ever since. The Blakes have released an album full of chaotic and sensuous rock and roll recalling the stinging catchiness of early Who, Kinks, and other 60s spitfire rock bands. Byla / Jarboe - Viscera (Red) ................................................................... A truly mind-blowing, experimental collaboration between the legendary Jarboe (Swans) and Byla, Viscera explores the deepest areas of the psyche and the aural experience as a whole. The gravity and grasp of sound that Viscera effortlessly wields will make this an instant classic in the world of avant-garde noise that will be talked about for years to come. Byla is Kevin Hufnagel, of Relapse recording instrumentalists Dysrhythmia, and Colin Marston, of Troubleman recording artists Behold. Guitarist Mick Barr of Orthrelm makes a guest appearance on one of the songs as well. Karen Dalton - Cotton Eyed Joe 2CD+DVD (Delmore) ................................................................... Deluxe 2CD+DVD featuring previously unreleased 1962 live reel-to-reel recordings, remastered at the Abbey Road studios. Karen Dalton was one of the most fascinating singers of the 60's NY folk scene, a genuine cult figure and an influence on such famous friends such as Bob Dylan, Fred Neil, Tim Buckley or Tim Hardin. "Sounds less like a folk record and more like a warp in the space-time continuum, a portal that links prehistoric blues with the freakiest acoustic music being made today. it's also the most beautiful and harrowing album you'll hear this year." - Uncut. Nancy Elizabeth - Battle and Victory (Leaf) ................................................................... The Lancashire-born singer's down-to-earth songs are brought to life by her warm and unaffected voice. Unpretentious but effortlessly ambitious, Nancy turns the retro, less-is-more aesthetic of the current acoustic revival on its head. Not content with writing and singing all the songs herself, the 23-year-old also plays most of the instruments, including guitar, celtic harp, khim, Indian harmonium, Appalachian dulcimer and bouzouki, amongst many others. While her work is never in thrall to any particular artist or genre, Nancy's music calls to mind aspects of artists as diverse as Nina Nastasia, Incredible String Band, Radiohead, Jackie McShee, Mogwai, Talk Talk and Led Zeppelin. Murcof - Cosmos (Leaf) ................................................................... Murcof's past approach involved mixing disembodied orchestral passages amidst microbeats, letting a song shift and mutate in a minimal environment. With Cosmos, he has progressed towards a more sophisticated compositional mode. The immensity of tracks draw to mind the work of the German electronic pioneers of the 70s or the Hungarian composer Gyorgy Ligeti as much as the visceral, low-end rumblings of SunnO))) or Coil. Murcof's compositions have always been as much about the absence of sound as what you actually hear, and these techniques are further refined here. Pylon - Gyrate [reissue] (DFA) ................................................................... Originally unleashed in 1980 and appearing here for the first ever time on CD, beautifully remastered from the original reels. This also includes the addition of their debut single and EP, as well as one track from 1979, never before released, entitled "Functionality". With liner notes from Fred Schneider (B-52's), Hugo Burnham (Gang of Four) and Michael Stipe (R.E.M.), it is amazing something so praised in its day and still quite modern-sounding had yet to make its way onto CD. The band's jagged rhythms, scratchy guitar and insistent bass lines were the perfect foil for Vanessa's whisper-to-a-shriek vocals and the band's live shows were sweaty dance parties. R.E.M. - Live 2CD (WB) ................................................................... Recorded during a two-night gig in Dublin in 2005, this split 2xCD set is heavy on new tracks, rehabbing songs from the albums Around the Sun and Reveal while occasionally digging deeper into the legendary group's rich catalog. DJ Spooky - Creation Rebel (Trojan) ................................................................... The follow up to 2006's highly acclaimed Trojan remix project, Creation Rebel is a mash-up of various sounds and styles from the rich and deep Trojan Records archives. On this collection, DJ Spooky links current music production with older techniques pioneered by Trojan catalog artists such as King Tubby and U-Roy. By exploring the art of remixing, sampling, turntablism - all of the elements that can be traced back to dub - Spooky has created a mini history of electronic music. Everybody says techno started in Detroit, and hip-hop came out of NY. This shows that maybe Jamaica got their first. Thrice - The Alchemy Index, Vols. 1-2 (Vagrant) ................................................................... For some bands, making the same album over and over again just doesn't fulfill the members' desires. Having changed styles from record to record throughout their career, Thrice's latest album is by far the most unique, creative music the band has made to date. The album features two EPs, the Fire disc and the Water disc. Each disc showcases a different side of the band's styles, Fire leans heavier and shows comparisons to the band's old sound. The Water disc features lush soundscapes and quiet rock. To Kill a Petty Bourgeoisie - The Patron (Kranky) ................................................................... TKAPB consists of Jehna Wilhelm, guitar and vocals, and Mark McGee, electronics and sound manipulation. The Patron is their debut full length. The songs center around an underlying love story between two merging corporations that manage to capture the raw sentiment of isolation, profound discovery, and morbid betrayal. Patron is about the corruption of an idea that is at first welcomed and later destroyed. They've produced a near perfect storm of structure and chaos, melody and noise, the precise and the random, fused into their own unified musical theory of everything that at times soothes can simultaneously grab your throat. Toxic Avenger - Superheroes 12" (Iheartcomix) ................................................................... While France continues to expand as the dominating powerhouse for electro-dance music, the Toxic Avenger is quickly rising as the premiere Frenchman taking the dancefloor to a new level. Born Simon DeLacroix, the Toxic Avenger is notorious for his infectiously catchy, self-produced dance-a-thon tunes. If you caught him at Daft Crunk last friday you know you need this for your dance party. Umphrey's McGee - Live at the Murat (SCI) ................................................................... A two night stand in a sonically appealing room became a vision that Umphrey's sought out for early 2007 with this interest in mind: recording and releasing a live show that encompassed improvisation, lots of rocking and some inspiration from the excited fans who cheered them on over those two nights. They chose the Egyptian Room at the Murat Center in Indianapolis for Easter weekend of 2007 and lo and behold, the nights became two to remember. Underworld - Oblivion with Bells (ATO) ................................................................... After a five-year hiatus, Underworld return with an album that draws from across their past. With a mix of aggression and sunshine, they calculate syncopated, ricocheted beats against cleanly delineated textures and circumscribed melodies that have the cool of the 80s New Romantic movement from which they originally sprang as Freur. Kraftwerk is in the DNA of their sound, but they've moved well past that, incorporating elements of hip-hop and industrial music into the mix. Like some of Eno's work, Karl Hyde's frequently treated, monotone talk-singing vocals could have been time-shifted from a beat-poetry reading of the early 60s. LANDLOCKED READING ROOM ------------------------------------------------------------------ 33 1/3 Book Series (Continuum) ................................................................... This is a series of books written about important and/or seminal music albums. We have a ton of these fascinating books back in, many for the first time. Steely Dan, Minutemen, Captain Beefheart, Byrds, Stevie Wonder, Guns n Roses, Joni Mitchell, GbV, Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, the Who, Nirvana, Bob Dylan, Beastie Boys, Sly and the Family Stone, David Bowie, MC5... the list goes on and on and on. Bejeezus Zine #9 - Autumn 2007 ................................................................... Bejeezus is a magazine made from love out of Louisville, Kentucky. A hundred pages of art, music, food, travel, film, books, and more. A limited number of copies come with a free CD. Tasty. Mojo Magazine #168 - November 2007 (Blondie Cover) ................................................................... 30 years ago today, the world donned skinny ties, cranked up the nervy anxiety and - bingo! - punk begat new wave. Including: Blondie's great pop moment, the disastrous second Stiff tour and the wonder of XTC. Plus an interview w/ Liam Gallagher, Anton Corbijn on his Joy Division biopic Control, Suicide, Jools Holland, tons of reviews and the usual flood of great things from Mojo. Wax Poetics #25 - Oct/Nov 2007 ................................................................... Twenty-five issues strong, Wax Poetics delivers its first photo issue featuring original pieces on New Orleans and Brazilian musicians, a Miles Davis feature on his funky fusion days, and photo-essays by David Corio, Janette Beckman, Jamel Shabazz, Joe Conzo, and Charlie Ahearn. Wax Poetics Anthology, Vol. 1 ................................................................... In just 5 years, Wax Poetics has become the premier magazine for avid record collectors and general music connoisseurs alike by illuminating the golden era of music while recontextualizing today's music world. In response to the high demand for the publication's elusive back issues, this anthology serves as the answer to every collector's dream. WP compiled their favorite articles from Issues 1-5 and are giving them new life via this full-color, hardbound edition. Also features new illustrations, photographs, and an appendix of discographies. These are all available at Landlocked right now! Hurry! ------------------------------------------------------------------ Ed Askew - Little Eyes (Unreleased, 1970; De Stijl, 2007) ................................................................... I first head of this guy via an interview in the latest Galactic Zoo Dossier (also available at Landlocked!). Intrigued, I picked up his only 'official' album, 1968's awe-inspiring 'Ask the Unicorn' on ESP-Disk. Equally great, 1970's 'Little Eyes' was recorded as the follow-up, but sadly ESP ran out of money and it was never released. Luckily for us, De Stijl dug up an acetate (no master tapes to be found), remastered it, added some radio sessions and have made it available to the world. Consisting of simply Ed's vocals and his tiple (10-stringed latin instrument, similar to a ukulele), the listener is forced to focus on the songs themselves, which are amazing. Ed's lyrics are intensely personal and beautiful, sung with a unique phrasing and voice that you won't hear elsewhere. This album has a vibe similar to Dino Valenti's solo album, Michael Yonkers' 'Grimwood' and Pearls Before Swine's best work, but I have never heard anything that sounds quite like it. - Cyrus Dr. Feelgood - Sneakin' Suspicion (Columbia/UA, 1977) ................................................................... One of the Big 3 pub rock bands to my mind (along with Brinsley Schwarz and Ducks Deluxe), Dr. Feelgood championed a back-to-basics approach that, in hindsight, set the scene for British punk. This is the Feelgood's 3rd studio LP and the last to feature guitarist Wilko Johnson. Every punk/post-punk/new-waver with a short haircut, tight pants, and a skinny tie owes a debt to his style, and every choppy-scratchy guitar riff owes a debt to his playing- it's hard to imagine Gang of Four's Andy Gill or the Fall's Craig Scanlon weren't big fans. But don't expect anything overtly "punk" about Dr. Feelgood, they had no such pretensions; they were just a straight-forward genre-less rock n' roll band who liked to play 6 nights a week, work a few R&B covers into their set, and go on stage without make-up. Valet - Blood is Clean (Kranky, 2006) ................................................................... Portland's Honey Owens is no newcomer to the scene, as she has played in Jackie-O Motherfucker, Nudge and others for years now. Her Kranky debut as Valet is haunting and inviting. While you can sense the danger and mystery from the beginning, one cannot help but enter to see and hear more. Highly processed guitars lead into the darkness as a torch to shamanic rituals and cave paintings. The title track throbs along to one of the most sizzled-out bluesy jamz of the year. The journey continues through experiments in sound and hushed vocals while retaining an imaginary narrative. RIYL Charalambides, Lynchian background sound, Metallic Falcons, or chakra explorations. ...................................................................
