NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 11/06/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Battles - Tonto EP (CD+DVD) (Warp) ................................................................... The Tonto release includes remixes from Kompakt heroes 'The Field', Four Tet, a reworking of Leyendecker from DJ EMZ and Dr Dre mentored MC Joell Oritz, plus 2 awesome live versions. Whats more, both packages includes a dvd with the videos for Tonto and Atlas plus a making of Tonto documentary too. Vinyl version soon. Bright Eyes - Motion Sickness (Live) (Team Love) ................................................................... Documenting the I'm Wide Awake It's Morning tours from the first half of 2005, Motion Sickness is a compilation of live tracks, including a Feist cover and an Elliot Smith song. It comes with a 24 page booklet featuring an extensive tour diary written by Jason Boesel (Bright Eyes live band/Rilo Kiley). Burial - Untrue (Hyperdub) ................................................................... *This will not arrive until the end of the week* Sophomore release from the UK's mysterious and much-acclaimed Burial. Untrue is a record of weird Soul music, which lovingly processes spectral female voices into vaporized R&B and smudged two-step garage. Vocal lines are blurred, smeared, pitched up pitched down and pitch bent until their content is cast adrift from their original context and they whisper their saccharin sweet nothings into the void. Citay - Little Kingdom (Dead Oceans) ................................................................... Citay is an otherworldly place, full of psychedelic swirl, soaring harmonies and grandiose jams. Like their debut, the 70s rock sensibility is intact; Thin Lizzy, acoustic Led Zeppelin, Big Star and the Byrds all remain touchstones. Lush and beautiful; a grand, epic work that harkens back to day when studio excess was encouraged and a premium was placed on composition. Loren Connors - As Roses Bow: Collected Airs 1992-2002 (Family Vineyard) ................................................................... As Roses Bow is an assembly of Loren's most melodically rich and stunning miniature compositions. These pieces are Connors' complete airs culled from 10 albums (8 that are out of print) and 2 singles, plus 4 unreleased airs. Nearly the entire critically heralded Airs (Road Cone 1999) is re-mastered and included as well. An American original in much the same sense as John Fahey or Jandek, in that he's chosen a classically American form, in this case the blues, and in true pioneer spirit taken it off somewhere else, crossed it with other forms and shaped it into a uniquely individual vision of the modern American myth. Einsturzende Neubauten - Alles Wieder Offen (Potomak) ................................................................... Working outside normal record business market mechanisms, Neubauten recorded this CD over some 200 days in their own studio funded by their world-wide network of subscribing Supporters. As such, it's free to explore the more difficult and subtle side of the band's music. There are moments on Alles where tension escalates into something approaching chaos, and other moments where the rhythms are mechanical, but most of the album sounds like sophisticated modern composition meets downtrodden pop song as if leader and head writer Blixa Bargeld was working on a Threepenny Opera for the 21st century. Grizzly Bear - Friend EP (Warp) ................................................................... So much more than just a collection of tracks from the cutting room floor, Friend serves as a scrapbook of the band's journey over the past year. Friends they've made on the road (CSS, Band of Horses and Atlas Sound) cover their favorite Grizzly Bear tunes, and the band finally commit to tape many of the live favorites that have awed audiences around the world + alternate versions. Jay Z - American Gangster (Roc-a-Fella) ................................................................... Separate from the soundtrack, this collection of all-new Jay-Z material is a interpretation of snapshots from the motion picture American Gangster. Drawing upon past experiences and speaking to the harsh reality of the drug trade still taking place in our nation's cities. LCD Soundsystem - 45:33 (DFA) ................................................................... Originally recorded by James Murphy as a continuous album-length disco symphony for Nike's Original Run series. It is the result of Murphy's desire to create a piece of music outside the typical commercial constraints. A refreshing audio creation, complete and fulfilling, moving through a dynamic range of tempos and rhythms, all the while maintaining the essence of an LCD Soundsystem recording. Available for the first time on CD and 2LP. The CD also includes 3 bonus tracks. Operation Ivy - Energy [deluxe reissue] (Epitaph) ................................................................... Formed in 1987, Op Ivy are a legendary 4-piece fronted by future Rancid cohorts Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman. Released in January of 89; the band broke up after the release party and it went on to go gold. Now considered a classic, and regularly namechecked in lists of the all-time great punk albums, it is one of the few records that sells as much year in year out as it did in its original release, as new generations of fans discover this influential album. CD version contains the original release along with 2 early EPs, all remastered, while the LP will duplicate the original release.  Gram Parsons w/ The Flying Burrito Bros - Live At The Avalon (Amoeba) ................................................................... Part irony-fuelled hillbilly anthems, part inventive country and soul covers built upon their achingly beautiful 2-part harmonies, the Burritos package was all underscored by "Sneaky" Pete's radical pedal-steel. The 2 sets by the Burritos original lineup that makeup Live At The Avalon were recorded soon after the completion of debut album The Gilded Palace Of Sin, by the Bear, the Dead's official tape archivist, at San Francisco's Avalon Ballroom. The recording favours Parsons' captivating quaver, as well as Hillman's harmonies and Kleinow's country skronk, on an audacious set-list that strays far from the Gilded Palace material, offering covers from Hank Williams, George Jones, the Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, Delaney & Bonnie and others - with a total of 10 songs never formally recorded by Parsons in any of his incarnations. Pedro - You, Me & Everyone (Mush) ................................................................... While comparisons to artists like Four Tet and Minotaur Shock have been natural on his past releases, Pedro approaches this latest set of compositions in a way that continues to establish his unique take on folk and jazz based electronica. Free-jazz horn blasts ring out with new vigor, drums hit a bit harder, and Pedro continues to forge new elements into his song craft, even raising the ghosts of Liquid Liquid and A Certain Ratio on a track or two. Pine Hill Haints - Ghost Dance (K) ................................................................... Growing up in the lower Appalachians, The Haints learned its sound from old men and women playing on porches and in living rooms, under ancient oak trees and paper mill forests. The 19 tracks on this album are a massive flow of music. Some songs were written on the day of the recording, and others 400 years ago. Sigur Ros - Hvarf/Heim 2CD (XL) ................................................................... The Hvarf/Heim release is comprised of 2 EPs. The title of the first, Hvarf, translates appropriately as "disappeared" as its 5 tracks are new studio recordings of lost songs from various points in Sigur Ros' history. An alternative translation of Hvarf is "Haven" which ties into the title of the second disc of this release, Heim, or "Home". A seperate release for the DVD editions is on 11/20. Bobb Trimble - Iron Curtain Innocence / Harvest of Dreams (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... Yet another in the neverending stock of reissued psych-folk musicians from yesteryear. But whereas most of the jewels being unearthed are from the actual psychedelic era, Bobb made his recordings in the late 70s/early 80s near Worcester, MA. Trimble echoes the ghosts of Bolan, Buckley, Rapp, Spence, and Wyatt. But instead of xeroxing the blueprint like many of today's bearded dudes, Bobb makes it his own. Freely incorporating a pastiche of phasing guitars, answering machine noise, spliced up tapes, and an heaping helping of god knows what. (False endings, candid studio out-take intakes, backwards loops). A staggering work of genius from a long-lost musician. Recommended. White Williams - Smoke (Tigerbeat6) ................................................................... Recorded in various sublets over 2 years in Cleveland, Cincinnati, NY, and San Francisco, using a laptop, analog synths and a mutable selection of studio equipment, Williams' 1st album is unapologetic pop that flirts with the vacuous nostalgia of the American dream; engaging ambiguous and schizophrenic instruments with impressionistic lyrics, driven by a casually heterosexual backbeat. The soundtrack to our dreams of a lustful and indifferent prom night that lasts forever. VA - Ten Tons Heavy 2CD (Planet Mu) ................................................................... Planet Mu's celebration of dubstep. With Boxcutter, Milanese, and Vex'd all pushing the sound to an extreme new level and the more straight up work of Pinch, Distance and MRK1 ensuring the original bassweight is still intact, Mike Paradinas takes the sound of now into the future. CD1 is a collection of the finest, deepest tunes released on Mu over the last 4 years (including a Milanese exclusive), and CD2 is a special bonus mix by Kiss FM's DJ Hatcha, containing massive new tunes from Planet-Mu's freshest artists in the scene. Hurry! ------------------------------------------------------------------ Kevin Ayers - Joy of a Toy (Harvest, 1969; Water, 2006) ................................................................... Kevin Ayers was a founding member of British prog-psychers the Soft Machine, playing bass and acting as principal songwriter from their early demos through their debut. Too laid back to handle their intense touring schedule, Ayers decided to venture out into his own little world. This, his 1969 solo debut easily stands among the best pop-psych albums of the late 60s and is, in my own little world, an absolute masterpiece. Musically, it is a flawless collection of unique pop songs, peppered with unexpected twists and turns, unforgettably lovely melodies and the stellar musicianship of Ayers, aided by his former bandmates. Lyrically it's almost like a series of nursery rhymes, chock full of clever wordplay and deadpan observations delivered in Ayers' soothing baritone. Combine these aspects with note-perfect production and engineering courtesy of Abbey Road and you have a perfect album on your hands. - Cyrus McDonald & Giles - s/t (Cotillion Records, 1971) ................................................................... Ever wonder what happened to Ian McDonald after leaving King Crimson but before forming arena rock monsters Foreigner? Well, before he figured out that weird art rock was not going to buy him that fleet of Bentleys, he gave it one more try with fellow KC alum, Michael Giles. This, the duo's lone, self-titled album was sketched out while on the lengthy tour to promote the first KC album, and it bears many of the hallmarks of that band's early work, especially the unmissable, stutter-step drumming of Giles. In contrast to early KC, however, the mood is kept pretty light and breezy; akin to some Traffic (who's leader, Steve Winwood, appears on one track) or even Donovan. The album was a flop of course, and it's been resigned to "King Crimson-side project" status ever since. But even non-completists will appreciate the album's jazzy, light prog noodling and winsome, very British charms. - Jason Tall Firs - s/t (Ecstatic Peace, 2006) ................................................................... Sick and tired of non-songs from bearded weirdos? This might just be your winter prescription for a cure. These boys aren't from some California canyon nor will they try to convince you of such. No noize, quirk, yelping, strange time signatures, or any of that stuff. Just simple three to four minute mostly acoustic based slow-burning tunes akin to Sonic Youth on Codeine (the band -and- the drug). Which makes sense when you realise that Sonic Youth's engineer and touring soundman Aaron Mullan is one of the Firs. Lazy dual male vocals, one gravelly and the other slightly deadpan - similar to Mascis vs Thurston. They follow along to finger-picked guitar passages with simple accompaniment - organ washes, brushed drums, etc. At 38 minutes of warmth you can easily find yourself visiting their woods time and again, and you should. - Heath ...................................................................
