Remember those good ole days when the Landlocked Beacon wasn't 3000+ words long and you could actually read the whole thing? Glory days are here again. Or maybe we should make this intro really long to make up for our lack of countless new releases... but its not our fault, we swear! Enjoy the briefness: NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 11/13/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Boscoe - s/t [reissue] (Asterisk) ................................................................... Chicago's South Side was the absolute epicenter of African-American creativity in the early 70s. In any other city, at any other time, they might've been a monstrously important band, but Boscoe was lost in the flurry of acts exploding musical genres to form "Great Black Music." While the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sun Ra's Arkestra and Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble led the charge away from mainstream culture, past the borders and boundaries of commercial music, Boscoe's lone album was denied inclusion into the canon of Great Black Music only by its obscurity. An outsider even in an outsider subculture. Vashti Bunyan - Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind 2CD (Dichristina) ................................................................... This complete collection of Bunyan's 25 existing early recordings is a young London girl's series of beautiful love songs that resonate profoundly via an almost brutal efficiency and honesty. The melodies seem timelessly sweet and addictive, the vision at once delicate but somehow tough as granite. The first disc gathers together the early singles and a set of demos recorded between 1965 and 1967; the 2nd comprises the entire, unaltered contents of a long-forgotten tape discovered at the last minute before mastering, containing a set of raw, pure, intimate recordings. Burial - Untrue (Hyperdub) ................................................................... *Come-and-git-it!* Sophomore release from the UK's mysterious and much-acclaimed Burial. Untrue is a record of weird Soul music, which lovingly processes spectral female voices into vaporized R&B and smudged two-step garage. Vocal lines are blurred, smeared, pitched up pitched down and pitch bent until their content is cast adrift from their original context and they whisper their saccharin sweet nothings into the void. Eskiboy - Best of Tunnel Vision 2CD (Eskibeat) ................................................................... Eskiboy aka Wiley is one of the original founders of what is now known as "grime" music. Originating in the massive Pay As U Go Cartel, Wiley went on to start up his own crew with the Roll Deep entourage. His debut album Treddin On Thin Ice, brought his unique "Eski beat" sound to the world and has cemented him as one of the most innovative producers ever in UK electronic music. The Best of Tunnel Vision is compiled by the grime scene's number one DJ, Logan Sama and encapsulates all the best from the stream of updates from Eski's Tunnel Vision series of mixtape CD styles - made swiftly and fired out beneath the radar. Robyn Hitchcock - I Wanna Go Backwards [5CD/8LP box set] (Yep Roc) ................................................................... Robyn Hitchcock has finally begun the daunting task of compiling his groundbreaking post-Soft Boys solo catalog. The first volume contains 3 CDs (Black Snake Diamond Role, I Often Dream of Trains, Eye) as well as an additional two CDs of bonus tracks which includes 20 unreleased songs. Individual CD versions as well as 8LP version also available. Mojo Magazine - Led Zeppelin Cover ................................................................... Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones draw back the veil on the past, the future and, of course, the small matter of their first gig in almost 2 decades. And The Song Remains the Same on DVD. Plus Beatles' Help DVD, Roy Harper, Elvis Costello, Pretty Things, Radiohead and more from this wonderful UK mag. Os Mutantes - Live At The Barbican 2CD (Luaka Bop) ................................................................... Back in the 60s, Os Mutantes were 3 teenagers from Brasil who tried to invent their own homegrown answer to the songs of the Beatles, became the house band for the Tropicalia movement, working alongside Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, and went on to develop a cult following that ranged from Kurt Cobain to David Byrne. The band broke up in the mid-70s, but reunited last year for the Barbican's Tropicalia festival, sounding in miraculously fine form as they revived their best-known songs, with Zelia Duncan taking the place of Rita Lee. Pantaleimon - Mercy Oceans (Durtro) ................................................................... Pantaleimon (pronounced 'Pan-ta-lay-mon') is the adopted moniker of vocalist and composer Andria Degens. Sometimes collaborating with friends, though often alone, she creates beautifully haunting and meditative music. Mercy Oceans is her long-anticipated 2nd full-length and features Baby Dee, Isobel Campbell, Keith Wood (Hush Arbors), and John Contreras. An album of exceptional beauty, depth and stunningly captivating. The CD comes packaged in a beautiful digipak with a full-color booklet containing lyrics, along with artwork by Beth Carter and photography by Cam Archer. Wire - Read & Burn 03 EP (Pink Flag) ................................................................... Read & Burn 03 is the first Wire release featuring entirely new material since 2003's Send. This 26-minute mini-album signals the stage-by-stage re-activation of the legendary and influential band as a recording and live entity. Wire continues to evolve and offers here the fresh fruits of its latest development. It should be noted that tracks from Read & Burn 03 will not be included on the next album to follow in the later half of 2008. Forever remembered as the band that made "Come on Eileen." And in America their name has become a byword for one hit wonders. But the massive worldwide success of that song unfortunately continues to overshadow their brilliant debut, which did contain a few hits of its own, including "Gino", which was a British #1. They emerged from the UK Northern Soul club scene, combining elements of American R&B with the upbeat tone of British ska, the attitude of punk, the swagger of pub rock, and a vocal style that approached the emerging new romo movement, but without the synthetic texture of, say, Japan. The songs are mostly portraits of working class British life; singer Kevin Rowland spits out lyrics like cold porridge before wooing you with a sweet, swaying falsetto. The band split apart before the folkier follow-up, Too-Rye-Ay, making this somewhat of a stand-alone piece. Overlooked and derided in the US, it's time Soul Rebels got its due as a classic, timeless pop album. - Jason The Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight (Ryko, 1980; Matador, 2001) ................................................................... The Soft Boys never really fit in to the UK "punk" rock scene which dominated late 70s underground music. Taking their influences more from the psychedelia of Beefheart, Syd Barrett and the Byrds than the garage and early rock n roll that influenced the punks, they were just too weird and a little too "soft" to be accepted by the leather-clad masses. Underwater Moonlight was, like their other releases, not successful, but has now been accepted as a highly influential masterpiece. Frontman Robyn Hitchcock's always amazing songs provide the perfect foundation for Kimberlew Rew's beatlesque guitar leads and the band's stellar harmonies to work their magic. Full of bizarre, surrealistic imagery, blistering guitar-work and strange psychedelic left-turns, nothing else in the late 70s sounded anything like this, nor does anything now. The reissue adds bonus cuts from the album sessions, as well as rehearsal tapes which showcase just how ahead of their time this band really was. - Cyrus South - s/t (Jagjaguwar, 1998) ................................................................... South were a band lost in time, short-lived and unknown. They chose a path not often tread in indie-music in the 90s, and could have possibly found a home on a label such as Thrill Jockey if the band had chose to have more of a groove. Instead, they are a melange of late era Talk Talk atmosphere, Sea & Cake politeness, Reich-ian looping and Labradford haze. Based out of Richmond, VA, they had a restrained elegance that was equal parts chamber music, "post-rock", and "slow/sad-core". Touches of piano, hammered dulcimer, and vibes are mixed in with crystalline production. Cinematic and academic, music for widescreen home movies and sunlit porch reading. This approach has since followed in Patrick Phelan's solo work over three delightful albums for Jagjaguwar. - Heath ...................................................................
