We will have DJs and snacks. Woo, snacks! While waiting for us to reopen, read all about us as Light In The Attic Records' Store of the Week: http://www.lightintheattic.net/news/?p=295#more-295 NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 11/20/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Bonnie Prince Billy - Ask Forgiveness EP/12" (Drag City) ................................................................... An EP of covers with Meg Baird and Greg Weeks (Espers). It's all played with extreme beauty and ol' Bonny sings the songs like he wrote 'em — when what he's really done is loved 'em. And having loved, he's now got to turn them loose again... Features tunes of Bjork, Danzig, Frank Sinatra, Merle Haggard, Will Oldham, Phil Ochs, R Kelly and Mickey Newbury. Boris w/ Merzbow - Rock Dream 2CD (Southern Lord) ................................................................... The usually harsh, corrosive grate of Merzbow is not as apparent with Boris involved. Also the inspired charge of the Boris rock machine seems to reach new heights with Merzbows' intuitive textures added. Boris passionately play their songs as they appear on the albums, but with Merzbow sharing the stage the result transcends the usual conventions of "rock-song" structure. Elaborate and beautifully packaged in a sturdy mini-gatefold die-cut jacket with printed innersleeves, designed by Stephen O'Malley. British Sea Power - Krankenhaus? EP (Rough Trade) ................................................................... This barn burner of an EP features two songs from the upcoming album and a smattering of other tracks recorded during the same sessions. Exclusive to the physical release of Krankenhaus? are two enhanced videos - a beautifully shot live performance and a self-produced video. Cloudland Canyon / Lichens - Exterminating Angel (Holy Mountain) ................................................................... This collaboration between the mellow, Memphis-meets-Germany duo of Kip Ulhorn and Simon Wojan (Cloudland Canyon) and Chicago's rock n roll concierge and knower-of-mystics Robert Lowe (Lichens) was born on a trip to the West Coast of the a few years ago. The single 30-minute track uses voice, guitar, samplers, and ARP synthesizer. You've heard of the unmade science fiction epic whose would-be director proposed using different big-name progressive bands to perform a soundtrack for specific planets used in the script; here then are the sounds accompanying a spacecraft that's a combination Death Star and Taco Bell from the 70s filled with cement Mayan temples and pyramids populated by large, snappily dressed reptilian beings. Electric Wizard - Witchcult Today (Candlelight) ................................................................... As the world plunges into chaos, in this: the final days of the wretched human race, there is only one antidote to the misery... The Electric Wizard. Born in Dorset, England in 1993, in a quiet country town, Electric Wizard were initially the product of frustration, unemployment and excessive drug abuse. Here, they remain in top form and groovy as always. Witchcult Today has cleaner production overall but it still sounds stoned out and doesn't lose a step of the awesome heaviness they are known for. Gorillaz - D-Sides (Virgin) ................................................................... This is their second b-sides, remixes and rarities compilation following 2002's G-Sides. Disc one of features thirteen unreleased and reworked tracks. Disc two features nine remixes by DFA, Jamie T, Stanton Warriors, Hot Chip, Junior Sanchez and Soulwax among others. LoVid - i DVD (CollectivEye) ................................................................... LoVid is an interdisciplinary artist duo composed of Tali Hinkis and Kyle Lapidus. i was recorded during a residency at The Experimental Television Center in Owego NY in 2003. LoVid recorded 3 hours of live video using equipment of their own along with the center's unique audio and video synthesizers and processors. 13 dynamic tracks were extracted to make this DVD. The videos are synesthetic compositions in which image and sound are created as one entity, where image is audible and sound is visible. http://www.lovid.org/ Major Stars - Mirror/Messenger (Drag City) ................................................................... Wayne Rogers and Kate Village have been playing 6-string storms out of their guitars since the late 80s with such legends as Crystalized Movements and Magic Hour. The past 10 years have been spent cranking out the rock in Major Stars, which has expanded to a triple-guitar lineup, fronted by the power-wailings of Sandra Barrett, who aids the band in their newfound roadhouse aspirations. An incredible avalanche of rock and all in an old-school economical album length. James Murphy and Pat Mahoney (LCD Soundsystem) - Fabriclive.36 (Fabric) ................................................................... James Murphy and Pat Mahoney delve into their NY roots for a hot sweaty blend of seminal disco, deep rare grooves and edgy tech-infused funk from influential artists such as Donald Byrd & 125th St, Chic, Lenny Williams, Junior Byron and Love of Life Orchestra. A delightful nod to their future, past and present (including their own "Hippe Priest Bumout"), this mix is unashamed hand-clapping fun, full of upfront rhythms, obscure treats and heart warming guilty pleasures. Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero Remixed (Interscope) ................................................................... Spun off from Year Zero, the #2-charting album issued in the spring, Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D features a stunning diversity of remixers, from Joy Division and New Order's Stephen Morris to classical crossover pioneer Kronos Quartet and hip-hop poet Saul Williams; from avant-garde leader Bill Laswell, electronica's Olof Dreijer from The Knife, Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino and post-punk revivalists The Faint to an unknown fan who submitted a remix via the Internet. Push-Pull - 3 (Joyful Noise) ................................................................... In a universe of infinite bounds, a band of Mikes (Bridavsky, Hoggatt, Notaro) have the sheer talent and purpose of finding the non-existent edge. This local 3 piece stick out like a sore thumb in a world of binary song structures and stale uninspired musical vision. Immediate sounds and complete obliviousness to hipster rock simultaneously offend, seduce, repel, and violate the music snobs of our time. Imagine Cream's pop structures arranged for the Mahavishnu Orchestra, probing areas untouched by The Wipers, King Crimson, Big Star, or Shellac. "3" is Push-Pull's most recent effort and their 1st official release with Indys' Joyful Noise Recordings. This 6+ song EP presents Push-Pull in their elemental form: drums, cymbals, guitar, bass, and voices. It's honest, it's loud, it's quick and it's to the point. Six Organs of Admittance - Shelter from the Ash (Drag City) ................................................................... From its seemingly straighforward presentation to the tight song constructions all the way through to the soaring spiritual burst you get once having made it through the maze, Shelter From the Ash is a rewarding listen. Magik Markers' Elisa Ambrogio brings her powerful presence into the mix — on guitar, on vocal and on pure presence, adding a significant other-ness to the already wild in the country axis that Chasny has swung from since day one. Recommended! The Valerie Project - s/t (Drag City) ................................................................... An epic work of love and cinematic visions, The Valerie Project is a double-album length virtual soundtrack, at once paying tribute to as well as provisionally reconstituting Lubos Fizer's soundtrack to the 1970 film Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. A who's-who of Philadelphia acid-folk heads led by the inestimable Greg Weeks (Espers) wend their way through the darks and lights of Valerie's surreal journey, rarely coming up for air. The mood is almost Byzantine, but definitely old-world of some kind, the air loaded with incense and other organic delights. VA - SloMo DVD (SloMo) ................................................................... SLOMO VIDEO is 100 one minute slow motion videos by 85 filmmakers and video artists from around the world. The video festival swerves into cinemas around the world, transubstantiates time into taffy, and turns the usual expectations of a video show on its side and inside out. This unique compilation of cinematic slowness pulls the audience through a molasses-tinged warp of catastrophic visual and audio beauty! Hurry! ------------------------------------------------------------------ Bee Gees - Horizontal (1968, Atco; 2006, Rhino) ...................................................................  Saying that you like the Bee Gees is usually met with at least laughter, if not a series of scathing remarks that make you question your own love for the brothers Gibb. Don't let the naysayers bring you down, though. The Bee Gees WERE awesome, at least in the 60s. From 1967-69, they created 3 amazing pop-psych albums that rivalled the best work of the Hollies, Left Banke and the Zombies. 68's Horizontal, their 2nd LP, is a total masterwork of UK baroque-psych. Every track is a Gibb-penned nugget drenched in melancholia, clever lyrics, awesome vocals and gorgeous psychedelia. Weeping mellotrons and cascading strings battle it out with pulsating volume-pedal guitars and hard rocking drums. The reissues include stereo and mono mixes of the album, as well as a bonus disc containing singles and amazing unreleased material. Essential! - Cyrus Drakkar Sauna - Jabraham Lincoln (2006, Marriage) ................................................................... If you haven't seen the Sauna play here in Bloomington in the past few years, you must be living under some kind of really heavy rock. They seem to pass through every few months and blow the roof off of each and every venue they visit. Which is saying quite a bit, because they are only two simple men from Lawrence, KS with acoustic instrumentation. Chord organ, mandolin, one-man-band percussion, guitar and the sweetest vocal harmonies. Like the Stanley Brothers covering the Everly Brothers at an acid revival. Does that equal the Holy Modal Rounders? Kind of. They are indeed modern day troubadours, laying to the land, weaving tales of the absurd and the benign. They might single-handedly bring their warm old-timey sound into the cold hearts of hipsterdom and make everyone dance and sing Hallelujah! - Heath John Jacob Niles - An Evening With... (Tradition, 1958; Empire 2006) ................................................................... John Jacob Niles is, next to Alan Lomax, maybe the most important collector of traditional American Music. He dealt mostly with the music of his native Kentucky and Appalachias. He was transcribing songs from oral sources as early as the 1st decade of the 20th century, barely in his teens! He also composed many songs that have steeped into the vernacular, including "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair" and "Go Away From My Window." Classically trained, he sang in an eerie operatic falsetto (think Tiny Tim meets Devendra), often accompanying himself on a gigantic handcrafted dulcimer. I suppose it sounded quite mannered and too idiosyncratic for the populist "authenticity" seekers of the 60s folk revival and afterward, despite big name admirers like Burl Ives and Bob Dylan. It was only after a brief, arresting appearance in Scorsese's Dylan documentary, No Direction Home, that any of his music appeared on CD. This collection from 1958 is as good a place to start as any. - Jason ...................................................................
