Hard to believe the end of the year is here... This marks the 92nd edition of our weekly update! Whoa. We often find ourselves being curmudgeons about new music, but lo and behold - it took quite a bit of work to slim down the huge list of great music released this year to a top ten. Check out the results below the new releases... HOLIDAY HOURS ------------------------------------------------------------------ Landlocked Music will be open daily up to and including Christmas Eve for your last minute gift buying needs. We will be closed 12/25 - 12/27 for some rest and relaxation. We will also be closed new year's day. Stop in and say hello during your time off work! NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 12/18/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Rivers Cuomo (Weezer) - Alone: The Home Recordings (Geffen) ................................................................... Some of Rivers' favorite home demos from '92 to '07 featuring a lot of never heard before songs, a few covers, a few songs from his unfinished rock musical "Songs From The Black Hole" and the original demo for "Buddy Holly". Jonny Greenwood - There Will Be Blood OST (Nonesuch) ................................................................... Guitarist Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead has composed a hauntingly dramatic instrumental score for director PT Anderson's ambitious new film, There Will Be Blood (an adaptation of the Upton Sinclair novel Oil!). The soundtrack will appeal to serious movie-music fans, who will appreciate this rare find: an intelligent, beautiful and deeply cinematic orchestrated score performed by the BBC Orchestra and London Sinfonietta that can hold its own next to the classic work of such composers such as Herrman, Bernstein and Morricone. Mojo Mag - January 08 - Amy Winehouse Cover ................................................................... Best of 2007 Issue - All the records, reissues, tracks and DVDs that rocked their world. Including: MOJO's coveted Album Of The Year award. Plus: interviews with The Arcade Fire, Alex Turner, Dion, Damon Albarn, Johnny Marr, Little Steven, Paul Weller, PJ Harvey, LCD Soundsystem, Robert Wyatt, David Crosby, Rufus Wainwright and Elvis Costello. Plus a free 15 track CD of vintage soul, blues and R&B from the Stax catalog. Bonny Billy & Dawn McCarthy - Wai Notes (Sea Note) ................................................................... Will Oldham is a busy guy all of a sudden. Right on the heels of releasing the Bonnie Prince Billy covers EP Ask Forgiveness (and contributing to some stunning duets on the new Scout Niblett album), he has revisited last year's The Letting Go with Wai Notes. The 10-song set is a collection of demos for The Letting Go from Oldham and Faun Fables' Dawn McCarthy, who sang on the album. Limited to an edition of 10,000 copies worldwide. VA - Great Debaters OST (Atlantic) ................................................................... This is the soundtrack to the upcoming film directed by Denzel Washington about the African-American college debate team who won the national championships in 1935, starring Denzel and Forest Whitaker. The soundtrack to the film contains remakes of traditional blues and gospel songs from the 20s and 30s by artists including Sharon Jones, Alvin Youngblood Hart, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops. VA - Sweeney Todd OST (Nonesuch) ................................................................... Stephen Sondheim's Grand-Guignol blend of opera and musical theater is a perfect match for director Tim Burton's gothic sensibility. The result of their encounter is a superb screen musical that, despite early fears from the show's fans, preserves most of the score and, perhaps even more importantly, its spirit. And yes, Johnny Depp can sing. Also Released This Week (but not necc in stock, ask us!) ------------------------------------------------------------------ Mary J. Blige - Growing Pains (Geffen) Chingy - Hate It or Love It (Disturbing tha Peace) Lupe Fiasco - The Cool (Atlantic) KISS - Kissology Vol 3 DVD (VH1) Tool - Vicarious DVD (Jive) ------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------ LANDLOCKED MUSIC'S END OF THE YEAR LISTS! ------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------ Best of 2007 - Jason's Picks ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Pop Levi - Return of the Black Magick Party (Counter) Hyper-active bumblegum glam with soul. It's the only record I've gone back to consistently all year. 2. King Khan - ... & BBQ / What Is?! (In the Red/Hazelwood) I'm counting these 2 as one release. The 1st is doo wop inspired garage rock, the 2nd is with a full band, horn section, etc. Good time rock n roll music. 3. Pissed Jeans - Hope for Men (Sub Pop) Scuzz-rock from Allentown, PA. Like the Electric Eels after learning a few chords. 4. Black Lips - Good Bad Not Evil (Vice) Finally emerging from under their influences (i.e. Sonics, Memphis rock, Black Flag...) They'll be considered legendary one day. 5. Blitzen Trapper - Wild Mountain Nation (Lidkercow) Sooner or later, a band highly influenced by Pavement was bound to do something interesting. 6. Deerhunter - Cryptograms & Flourescent Grey (Kranky) Delay-bathed and atmospheric. Psychedelic rock that doesn't sound a bit retro. 7. Wooden Shjips - s/t (Holy Mountain) Spacemen 3 meets the Stooges. So simple, but so good. 8. Lavender Diamond - Imagine Our Love (Matador) Crystalline-voiced elf singing about life and love. Kinda annoying at first, but really grows on you. 9. Ignatz - II (Kraak) Best guitar tone of the year, blurred through a veil of gauze. 10. Ted Leo - Living with the Living (Touch & Go) Like a great lost pub rock record. Somehow I've never really paid attention to this guy, a serious reevaluation is in order. Honorable Mentions --------------------- Besnard Lakes, ...Are the Dark Horse (Jagjaguwar); A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Scribble Mural Comic Journal CD (Notenuf); Angels of Light, We are Him (Young God); LCD Soundsystem, Sound of Silver (Capitol/DFA); Budos Band, II (Daptone); Sharon Jones, 100 Days 100 Nights (Daptone); After Dark compilation (Italians Do it Better); Light Shall Prevail, Defeat The Reign Of The Horned One Through The Light Of Christ (E.E.E Recordings); Sadies, New Seasons (Yep Rock); Magik Markers, Boss (Ecstatic Peace); No Age, Weirdo Rippers (Fat Cat); Liars, s/t (Mute); A Place to Bury Strangers, s/t (Killer Pimp); Burial, Untrue (Hyperdub); Terminals, Last Days of the Sun (Last Visible Dog); Celebration, Modern Tribe (4AD); Dead C, Future Artists (Ba Da Bing) Best Comebacks of 2007 (Jason) ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. And certainly never thought it would be this good. 3. Levon Helm - Dirt Farmer (Vanguard) Dude had throat cancer. That alone is worth inclusion. 4. Robert Plant / Alison Krauss - Raising Sand (Rounder) Sounded like a really bad idea on paper. I was wrong. 5. Beastie Boys - The Mix-up (Capitol) They smartly ditch the vocals to make a record of fodder for future crate diggers. Their best in years. 6. John Fogerty - Revival (Fantasy) Keep on chooglin' indeed. 7. Marmoset - Florist Fired (Secretly Canadian) Their preious album is one of the best pop albums ever to come out of Indiana. They've been silent too long. Good to hear anything from them. 8. Porter Wagoner - Wagonmaster (Anti) Sounds like he was at death's door, turns out he was. Funny. 9. Charlie Louvin - s/t (Tompkins Square) Octogenarian farmer/country music legend puts down the plow for one more. 10. Nick Lowe - At My Age (Yep Rock) Admittedly, some real dad rock here. But the guy still writes great lyrics. Best Reissues of 2007 (Jason) ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Pylon - Gyrate + (DFA) Dance punk don't come from New York. 2. Bobb Trimble - Iron Curtain Innocence/Harvest of Dreams (Secretly Canadian) There's no way I can explain these records in one sentence... 3. Moby Grape - catalog reissues (Sundazed) Three out of five titles were deleted due to legal problems soon after their release. Forty years later, the band is still cursed. 4. Peter Lewis - The Lost Album (Hacktone) Brit soul-weirdo discovers his inner Todd Rundgren. 5. Prefab Sprout - Steve McQueen (Epic) Classic pop album from the 80's. Contains bonus disc with acoustic demos. If you like Talk Talk, Thomas Dolby, etc. 6. Badfinger - Wish You Were Here (Colletcors Choice) One of their best, and the last LP with Pete Ham. Only intermittently available until now. 7. Soul Merchants - s/t (Smooch) "The Sisters of Mercy of Denver": way better than that sounds. 8. George Brigman - Blowin' Smoke 7" (Solid) Baltimore loner-stoner, his single from '77. Like a one-man Stooges. Killer guitar tone. 9. Buckaroos - Best of... (Sundazed) As in, Buck Owens and the...One of the best bands ever. They owned a lot of embroidered Nudie suits. Great career-spanning comp. 10. Shearwater - Palo Santo (Matador) Partially re-recorded for the reish, plus a bonus disc. At last they don't sound like an Okkervil side project. Best of 2007 - Heath's Picks ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Deerhunter - Cryptograms & Flourescent Grey EP (Kranky) Stunning psychedelic wastoid rock. Atlas Sound is great too. 2. The National - Boxer (Beggars Banquet) Somber and amazing straight forward intelligent and mature rock. 3. Cinematic Orchestra - Ma Fleur (Domino) Their name says it all- rich and soulful including vocals from Polaris Prize winner Patrick Watson and Fontella Bass. 4. Stars of the Lid - And Their Refinement of the Decline (Kranky) Another jewel in the crown of these gentlemen. Soundtracks for dreaming and isolation chambers. 5. Richard Swift - Dressed Up For The Letdown (Secretly Canadian) A classic infectious pop album for fans of Nilsson, Newman, McCartney, etc. 6. Six Organs of Admittance - Shelter from the Ash (Drag City) His most heartfelt and song-based release to date. 7. Vic Chesnutt - North Star Deserter (Constellation) A fantastic return! Vic has one of the best deliveries and poetic hearts out there. Backed by A Silver Mt Zion. 8. A Sunny Day in Glasgow - Scribble Mural Comic Journal (Notenuf) My inner shoegazer is happy. Reminds me of early 90s 4AD and of course My Bloody Valentine. 9. Iron and Wine - The Shepherd's Dog (Sub Pop) Sam Beam might be the modern Faulkner of the indie-music world. Now with a full band line-up. 10. Arbouretum - Rites of Uncovering (Thrill Jockey) This slow burner kept creeping back into my playlist... like a heavy version of Oldham's Palace. Funk / Soul / R&B in 2007 from Heath ------------------------------------------------------------------ Who'd have thunk that 2007 could be a hot year for new music of this genre? 1. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings - 100 Days 100 Nights (Daptone) Seeing her live in Indianapolis proves Daptone is in the lead right now. Classic sound, amazing performers, tight arrangements. 2. Heliocentrics - Out There (Stones Throw) Uncategorizable. Funk + Hip Hop + Jazz + Fusion + Psych + Electronic + Avant + Ethnic = Awesome. 3. Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators - Keep Reachin Up (Light in the Attic) Whereas Sharon is the hard funk feel, Nicole is the softer more Motown sound of the spectrum. 4. The Budos Band - II (Daptone) Daptone does it again, amazing instrumentals that touch on Latino, Afrobeat and heavy funk. 5. Bettye LaVette - The Scene of the Crime (Anti) The woman still has something to say.... now backed by Drive By Truckers and recorded in legendary Muscle Shoals, Alabama. 6. Nu-soul done right. 8. Mavis Staples - We'll Never Turn Back (Anti) Another visit from the past... Mavis brings the gospel to the modern age. 9. Orgone - The Killion Floor (Ubiquity) LA's Orgone mixes a lot more disco into their funk but still comes up with great results. 10.
