I'd like to thank the academy for this great honor... and we promise to no longer call our recruits 500+ times via our assistant - but that said we might be willing to take that $750k severance package! wink wink nudge nudge yea yea. An-ee-wayz... this little week affords you the luxury of one extra golden day of February Leap Year shopping, lucky you. For the love of grandma, don't throw it away! You only get it once every four years, so throw it in our direction... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 2/26/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Beach House - Devotion (Carpark) ................................................................... The Baltimore duo Beach House have returned with a surefire antidote to the winter blues. The organs, slide guitars and reverb are still there, but Beach House lay out some new sounds for their newest offering. While on their debut critics made comparisons to early 90s dream popsters like Mazzy Star, Galaxie 500 and Slowdive, on Devotion listeners will also hear the band's longtime admiration for 60s Motown and country folk. Sir Richard Bishop - God Damn Religion DVD (Locust) ................................................................... This film is a diabolical experiment in hypnotic mind control--a phantasmagoric presentation of demonic and divine imagery, meticulously assembled and designed to put the viewer into an altered state of darkened awareness. Includes original music from Elektronika Demonika, as well as unreleased material. If you ever wanted to go to hell and back, this film will get you halfway there. Some viewers may find the imagery used in this film to be disturbing, but that's the idea. Contains some strong sexual content (as all true religion should). Not for the weak-minded, faint of heart, or those suffering from occasional seizures. The Dirtbombs - We Have You Surrounded (In the Red) ................................................................... The Dirtbombs 4th LP is jam-packed with more of their soulful, Detroit-style, fuzztone-fueled garage-punk rock n roll that has made them a popular favorite with club-goers around the globe. Mick Collins and his band of miscreants take 12 slices of sonic thud and kick the party into high gear to show off a vast array of unexpected influences. Known for their tasteful selection of covers as much their stunning originals, this LP has fantastic takes on songs by comic artist Alan Moore, Portland stalwarts Dead Moon, and labelmates Sparks. Coming to Bloomington on March 21st - get your tickets! Earth - The Bee Made Honey in the Lion's Skull (Southern Lord) ................................................................... Earth's latest incarnation has arrived. Where "Hex" reveled in dark satanic twang and austere american beauty, The Bees Made Honey finds Dylan Carlson and the band growing into a harder, more rock, american Gospel and impovisitory direction framed by truly psychedelic production and blazing guitar sounds. Earth is also very honored to be joined for three songs by legendary and virtuoso guitarist Bill Frisell. Mr. Frisell adds a brilliant texture and counterpoint to the scintillating and inspired riffs of the band. Ghostland Observatory - Robotique Majestique (Trashy Moped) ................................................................... Only Texas could claim something as improbable as this: sweaty, raw-boned, and direct from the future; committed to electronics, stuck on big beats, yet unmistakably powered by rock 'n' roll. These guys share a love for Vince Young and Daft punk, Los Tigres del Norte, and The Animals. They mostly prefer to let their music speak for itself. It's not subtle. Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree (Mute) ................................................................... If Supernature was airbrushed in bold strokes of glitterball glamour, Seventh Tree is its sensual counterpoint. Where its predecessor came cocooned in style and sex, Tree emerges gilded in the butterfly colours of an English surrealism shared from Lear to Lennon. It shimmers and shines with the warmth of a hazy summer, an electric whirlpool of sound over which Alison's voice soars. Old Crow Medicine Show - Eutaw (OCMS) ................................................................... Old Crow Medicine Show travel the country in the tradition of 19th century medicine shows, playing what some describe as "Old Timey" music, traditional folk and jug band tunes. This record, originally released in 2001, has been out of print for over 2 years and includes such favorites as Raise A Ruckus, Cocaine Habit and Shack #9.
