Bloomington are you ready for Spring Break 2008!??! No students! Parking spots everywhere, immediate seating available, and it sure do smell better too, eh? Sure, they left B-twon with snow on the ground laughing all the way, but it can be our little secret that its actually nicer here without them, eh? Of course there is no parking in front of Landlocked, anyway, because of road work... but we are open! Stop in and let us pre-reminisce about warmer, calmer days ahead. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 3/11/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Adele - 19 (WEA) ................................................................... Citing her influences as diverse as Etta James, Jill Scott, Bjork, Dusty Springfield, Billy Bragg, Billie Holiday, Jeff Buckley, The Cure and Peggy Lee, Adele is a truly unique new artist. With her mix up of R&B and Soul served up with a healthy dash of feisty London attitude, she spins beautiful dark stories of loves won and lost and sometimes just daydreamed about. Del the Funky Homosapien - Eleventh Hour (Definitive Jux) ................................................................... The Eleventh Hour ends a long absence for Del the Funky Homosapien, one of the world's most uniquely brilliant rap artists. It is classic material, full of lyrical twists and turns, forthright yet deeply subtle and metaphorical in its exploration of life in the Bay Area. It is a triumphant return for one of the pioneers of underground hip-hop culture. Sharron Kraus - The Fox's Wedding (Durtro / Jnana) ................................................................... Sharron Kraus is a musician with a gift for beautiful and heartbreaking songs from a deep-seated storytelling mythology. Her music is rooted in the Folk traditions of England and Appalachia. Her songs are characterized by soil-rich vocals, haunting banjo, fine acoustic guitar, and visionary wordcraft. Kraus' songs are populated by a carnival array of fatally charismatic characters, telling tales of enslavement, perversion, incest, obsession, love and death whereas her live performances are stark, compelling, and delicate. She is like the roving storyteller, bringing tales of terror, sadness and joy to a stranger's hearth on a dark and stormy night. Silje Nes - Ames Room (Fat Cat) ................................................................... Debut album from Norwegian singer Silje Nes. Whilst creating a sound-world entirely her own, Ames Room shows a similar single-mindedness and adventurousness to peers such as Bjork as well as the homespun beauty of bands such as The Pastels. Broad ranging and full of character, the album moves from languid dream-pop to stomping, upbeat tracks, to more introspective or abstract numbers. With sparkling melodies at times exuding a music-box sweetness, spindly electronics weave around a vast array of instruments including cello, recorder, glockenspiel, xylophone, melodica, and trumpet, as well as percussion played on all manner of found objects. Mike Patton - A Perfect Place OST (Ipecac) ................................................................... Patton, the man of a thousand bands including former front man for Mr. Bungle and Faith No More, currently of Peeping Tom, Fantomas, Mondo Cane, Crudo and the list goes on penned this score, which is double in length as the film. The score marks a milestone for Patton who has been regaled in music circles for years but now delves into the world of film. Son Lux - At War with Walls and Mazes (Anticon) ................................................................... Son Lux marks yet another chapter in the Anticon label's evolution from its hip hop beginnings. His debut is a collection of electronically-aided pop music, showcasing the songs of ex-Bloomingtonian Ryan Lott. Why? - Alopecia (Anticon) ................................................................... Why? continues its calculated blitzkrieg on that self-made jangle-rap, indie pop n roll genre, but the stakes are raised. The boys returned to their Midwest roots for Alopecia, hunkering down a Minneapolis's studio and inducting a pair of venerable big guns into the band: Fog mastermind Andrew Broder and bassist Mark "Bear" Erickson. Throwing their samplers to the wind (mostly), they recorded live as a five-piece. By the time the core trio returned to Oakland, they'd amassed their most immediate and cohesive batch of songs to date. See em live at Bear's Place on April 2nd. VA - Body Language Vol. 6 - Mixed by Junior Boys (Get Physical) ................................................................... The Body Language series is a connoisseur's mix series, an opportunity for artists to deliver an expressive, personal mix, a journey through their record collections which presents the old alongside the new, unearths the obscure and overlooked, re-contextualizes the familiar. Matt and Jeremy selected and mixed the tracks for Volume Six in between recording sessions for their forthcoming third LP, and it succeeds both as a mapping of the band's interests and influences and as tremendously satisfying and versatile listening experience. VA - An England Story: The Culture of the MC in the UK 1984-2008 (Soul Jazz) ................................................................... An England Story shows the links and musical path from the arrival of UK Dancehall and Soundsystems in the early 1980s, through successive musical movements such as Jungle, UK Hip-Hop, up to today’s Garage, Grime and Dubstep. Hurry! ------------------------------------------------------------------ Metallic Falcons - Desert Doughnuts (Voodoo Eros, 2006) ................................................................... Imagine: two girls, best friends. As children they explore the woods, creeks. They have fantastical adventures with make-believe animals, dress up in floral frocks, masks and feathers in their hair. Songs are made up and repeated often. Over time paths diverge and they lose touch but never forget. Years pass - the girls reconnect and plan a weekend together to catch up. Faded photos, notebook drawings, cassette recordings and strange totems mix with memories, blood red wine, incense and opiates. The instruments play themselves and the childhood songs take on a new life with new experiences. The dreams of childhood remain but a darkness of lost innocence looms. This is not true but the sounds make it seem as though. RIYL His Name Is Alive, Cocorosie, Valet. - Heath Tall Dwarfs - Weeville (Homestead, 1992; Cloud, 2005) ................................................................... Another New Zealand treasure, the Tall Dwarfs formed in 1979 and quickly established themselves as one of the earliest pioneers of the DIY/lo-fi movement. Chris Knox and Alec Bathgate released a series of home recorded EPs throughout the 80s before finally biting the bullet and releasing this, their first full-length album in 1992. Major pillars of the New Zealand scene, this album clearly shows why they are held in such high regard. These guys are great songwriters. This predates the U.S. lo-fi psych-pop movement and you can see what a big inluence it had. The fact that it was reissued on Olivia Tremor Control's Cloud label should be a good clue as to its high regard among the lo-fi crowd. Very creative melodies and lyrics are enveloped by a great 4/8-track sound full of tape loops and fuzz.
